Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate the effects of organizational culture factors on the selection of software process development models and develops a conceptual model for selecting and adopting process development models with an organizational culture approach, using 12 criteria and their sub-criteria defined in Fey and Denison’s model (12 criteria).

Design/methodology/approach

The research hypotheses were investigated using statistical analysis, and then the criteria and sub-criteria were selected based on Fey and Denison’s model and the experts’ viewpoints. Afterward, the organizational culture of the selected company was measured using the data from 2016 and 2017, based on Fey and Denison’s questionnaire. Due to the correlation between the criteria, using the decision-making trial and evaluation technique, the correlation between sub-criteria were determined, and by analytical network process method and using Super-Decision software, the process development model was preferred to the 12 common models in information systems development.

Findings

Results indicated a significant and positive effect of organizational culture factors (except the core values factor) on the selection of development models. Also, by changing the value of organizational culture, the selected process development model changed either. Sensitivity analysis performed on the sub-criteria implied that by changing and improving some sub-criteria, the organization will be ready and willing to use the agile or risk-based models such as spiral and win-win models. Concerning units where the mentioned indicators were at moderate and low limits, models such as waterfall, V-shaped and incremental worked more appropriately.

Originality/value

While many studies were performed in comparing development models and investigating their strengths and weaknesses, and the impact of organizational culture on the success of information technology projects, literature indicated that the impact of organizational sub-culture prevailing in the selection of development process models has not been investigated. In this study, new factors and indicators were addressed affecting the selection of development models with a focus on organizational culture. Correlation among the factors and indicators was also investigated and, finally, a conceptual model was proposed for proper adoption of the models and methodologies of system development.

Abstract

Purpose

Software product management (SPM) unites disciplines related to product strategy, planning, development, and release. There are many organizational activities addressing technical, social, and market issues when releasing a software product. Owing to the high number of activities involved, SPM remains a complex discipline to adopt. The purpose of this paper is to understand what are the core and supporting SPM activities.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors adopted the research method of meta-ethnography to present a set of techniques for synthesizing individual qualitative studies to increase the degree of conceptualization. The results obtained from three empirical studies were synthesized using the meta-ethnography approach to enhance, rethink, and create a higher level abstraction of the findings.

Findings

The results show that the study has both theoretical and practical contribution. As the meta-ethnography synthesis has not been widely applied in software engineering, the authors illustrate how to use this research method in the practice of software engineering research. The practical contribution of the study is in the identification of five core and six supporting SPM activities.

Originality/value

The practical value of this paper is in the identification of core SPM activities that should be present in any company practicing SPM. The list of supporting SPM consists of activities that are not reported to product manager but affect the product success.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to develop an assembly modelling approach to be applied with a software package, to assist in the design and assembly of special purpose machines (SPMs).

Design/methodology/approach

A database of SPM elements was established, and an assembly relationships graph was created. Mating conditions were identified between the SPM elements, and their assembly constraints were extracted and implemented in SolidWorks application programming interface.

Findings

The implementation of this assembly modelling approach was validated by selecting SPM layouts as examples. A significant reduction in the assembly time was achieved compared to the traditional assembly procedure for the same examples.

Originality/value

This is a new application of assembly modelling that assists engineers and designers in the design and assembly processes of SPMs. This approach can also be applied to other machine tools with similar attributes.

Abstract

Purpose

Spare Parts Management (SPM) and Industry 4.0 has proven their importance. However, employment of Industry 4.0 solutions for SPM is at emerging stage. To address the issue, this article is aimed toward a systematic literature review on SPM in Industry 4.0 era and identification of research gaps in the field with prospects.

Design/methodology/approach

Research articles were reviewed and analyzed through a content-based analysis using four step process model. The proposed framework consists of five categories such as Inventory Management, Types of Spares, Circularity based on 6Rs, Performance Indicators and Strategic and Operational. Based on these categories, a total of 118 research articles published between 1998 and 2022 were reviewed.

Findings

The technological solutions of Industry 4.0 concepts have provided numerous opportunities for SPM. Industry 4.0 hi-tech solutions can enhance agility, operational efficiency, quality of product and service, customer satisfaction, sustainability and profitability.

Research limitations/implications

The review of articles provides an integrated framework which recognizes implementation issues and challenges in the field. The proposed framework will support academia and practitioners toward implementation of technological solutions of Industry 4.0 in SPM. Implementation of Industry 4.0 in SPM may help in improving the triple bottom line aspect of sustainability which can make significant contribution to academia, practitioners and society.

Originality/value

The examination uncovered a scarcity of research in the intersection of SPM and Industry 4.0 concepts, suggesting a significant opportunity for additional investigative efforts.

Purpose

This paper studies how accounting information is used by actors in an innovation process. It investigates how accounting information influences and is influenced by the different actors. The purpose of this paper is to develop a more thorough understanding of the role of accounting in making the choices that form temporary solutions.

Design/methodology/approach

An in-depth case study of the development of a standard software release within the telecom industry.

Findings

This study has shown that accounting was a key ingredient when temporary solutions were formed in the innovation processes. Actors used accounting to stabilize the content of the release in the formation of the gate documents and used accounting to destabilize the content between the temporary solutions. It is difficult to evaluate whether the use of accounting improved or harmed the innovation. Further, the study also revealed that the use of accounting influenced and was influenced by previous and prospective future deals. This put new challenges on the use of accounting because it involved negotiation processes that influenced the accounting figures.

Practical implications

The findings provide insights into the procedures for finding temporary solutions in the innovation process and the role of accounting in these procedures.

Originality/value

This paper contributes by providing a more thorough understanding of the role of accounting regarding the choices that comprise the temporary solutions within the innovation process. In addition, it shows how accounting has a critical role both for settling on and modifying temporary solutions. Hence, the research demonstrated how studies of the role of accounting in innovation processes can contribute to the industrial network approach by giving a more thorough understanding of network dynamics and the process of attaining stability and instability in business networks.

Abstract

Purpose

Business performance management describes the processes, methodologies, metrics and systems needed to measure and manage the performance of an enterprise. Traditional performance management systems were based on financial and productivity measures but the alternate measures proposed in last more 25 years have strategic focus and incorporate variety of performance measures such as efficiency, effectiveness, productivity, quality, customer satisfaction, innovation and employee satisfaction in addition to financial. Globalization and modernization have created a business environment uncertain with associated risks which has necessitated the incorporation of various types of flexibilities such as strategic, technical, operational, information system (IS), etc. Critical success factors and implementation issues also need to be incorporated to succeed. The purpose of this paper is to present the strategic performance management system (SPMS) designed, incorporating flexibility and implementation issues, and its effectiveness empirically validated from Indian oil industry.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on literature review and gaps identified, a proposed model of enterprise performance management system incorporating flexibility, critical success factors and implementation issues was developed. Macro- and micro-level factors impacting the effectiveness of the model were identified, and hypotheses were developed and tested empirically from the survey study of Indian oil industry.

Findings

The finding met, by and large, most of the research objectives. In total, 7 macro- and 11 micro-level factors came out from the study. The strategy planning, strategy implementation, strategic flexibility (SF), SPMS design, information system flexibility (IF) flexibility, implementation issues and critical success factors, and performance feedback and learning are the macro-level factors impacting the SPMS effectiveness in measuring and managing performance of an enterprise. The SPMS implementation issues have proved to be major driver of effectiveness.

Research limitations/implications

The research like many such researches had limited resources, data availability and bias of respondents. However, the model was statistically validated for its reliability and hypothesis testing. The research has added to literature on SPMS as integrated model incorporated SF, information flexibility and critical success factors. However, the effect of other types of flexibilities such as organizational, operational, HR, marketing, etc., and other stakeholders should also be studied in future research to broaden the findings.

Practical implications

The validated SPMS has practical implications for academics and researchers. Strategic and IF, and critical success factors have been incorporated in the integrated model to take care of business uncertainties so that it is strategically aligned and facilitate in effective SPMS use and implementation.

Social implications

Though it has no direct social implication but, if adopted for social projects and not-for-profit organizations, it will have social benefits of efficient and effectiveness delivery of social projects and initiatives.

Originality/value

This is an original work carried out by the authors. The validated model along with interpretation is presented.

Abstract

Purpose

The paper aims to study the implementation issues and managerial practices impacting the success of strategic performance management system in Indian industry. It has been empirically validated in Indian oil industry. As number of companies adopting SPM has not been able to reap benefit of SPM implementation, a study has been conducted to find reasons in Indian industry. The findings are discussed, and implications for researchers and practitioners are provided in this paper. Limitations and suggestions for further research are also given at the end of the paper.

Design/methodology/approach

From the literature review, research problem, critical implementation issues and dimensions of effectiveness of the SPM system have been identified. Accordingly research objectives and hypothesis have been designed and tested by conducting survey in Indian oil industry. The hypothesis that implementation issues are positively impacting the effectiveness parameters of SPM system has been empirically validated using univariate, correlation analysis and multi-variate analyses, t-test, F-test and regression analysis. The validated model has been presented.

Findings

A number of critical implementation issues are positively impacting different dimensions of the SPM system effectiveness. SPM managerial/implementation issues such as the use of SPM by top management, selection of right and adequate performance measures, SPM implementation by champions, the use of SPM as a strategic tool, quality and flow of data, incentive scheme aligned with SPM and good organisational acceptance of SPM are critical implementation issues of SPM which affect different dimensions, viz., strategic alignment, strategic monitoring, financial, customer, internal process and learning objectives of the enterprise.

Research limitations/implications

The objective was to study SPM implementation issues and its impact of SPM effectiveness. Indian oil industry being early adopters of the advance SPM methodology and tools, has been chosen for the study and empirical validation. The validated model provides a better insight on the linkages of SPM implementation factors with different dimensions of SPM to researchers and practitioners. The validated model can be help tool in SPM implementation, making SPM a success in driving performance improvements in the organisations. Though recommendations are general, a comparatively large sample size across different industries and sectors combining quantitative and qualitative study would further enhance the utility and reliability of the model.

Practical implications

The validated model provides guidelines to practicing managers on critical implementation and managerial issues to be taken care of in the SPM system implementation.

Originality/value

The research problem has been identified based on literature review. Research objectives and hypotheses have been framed and empirically validated. It provides insight of the effect of implementation issues on different dimensions of SPM effectiveness. The study has filled the research gap of such a study in Indian industries. The validated model provides guidelines to practitioners and researchers and contributes to the literature.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to assess how intergovernmental panel on climate change’s (IPCC’s) sixth assessment report of Working Group I (WGI), a Summary for Policymakers (SPM), has evaluated the current climate change situation. The author uses the qualitative content analysis (QCA) method (i.e. summative content analysis [SCA]) to identify critical points of the SPM.

Design/methodology/approach

To better understand the WGI report and its SPM, the author uses the thematic analysis, often called the QCA method. This study takes more steps and uses one of the main qualitative content analysis approaches (i.e. SCA). Therefore, QCA (SCA) can help the author count the occurrence of certain words using computer-assisted qualitative data analysis software that quantifies the words in the data. This process helps the author to understand codes and patterns (e.g. the concept in the results section).

Findings

Interestingly, the AR6 says more about adaptation for policy makers in sections C (Climate information for risk assessment) and D (Mitigation of future climate change) than in sections A and D. Finally, this study concludes that the IPCC WGI SPM has addressed evidence on global climate change policymaking for SPMa, SPMd (mitigation-based strategies and mitigation policy [MP]) and SPMb, SPMc (adaptation policy and adaptation-based strategy).

Research limitations/implications

First, this study refers only to the contribution of WGI, a SPM. The findings of this study do not necessarily provide a full understanding of what the AR6 WGI SPM says about climate change. It points out that the QDA Miner software and Voyant tool do not include all variables and examples where mitigation and adaptation-based strategies are discussed. The guidance for coding is based on the approved version of IPCC AR6 WGI SPM. The final limitation is that the relatedness of key words (e.g. confidence, high and warming) is sometimes ambiguous; even experts may disagree on how the words are linked to form a concept. Thus, this method works at the keyword level. A more intelligent method would use more meaningful information than keywords.

Originality/value

This study used qualitative data analysis (SCA) to explore what was said about climate change in four sections of the IPCC AR6 WGI SPM, which may influence current and future global climate change policymaking.

Abstract

Purpose

The dynamic capabilities view is invoked to hypothesize relationships among the service supply chain management (SSCM) process capabilities using the information technology management (ITM) process capability. This study argues that ITM will have an impact on the service performance management (SPM) process capability only when it works through mediators and demonstrates the impact by using the framework of SSCM process capabilities.

Design/methodology/approach

This study is based on a survey using quantitative data collection to empirically test the research framework. The proposed framework and hypotheses were tested using a mail-in survey of the service industry in Thailand. The statistical analysis of data acquired from the survey was performed using structural equation modeling.

Findings

The results support the existence of a mediating role for the ITM process affecting the SPM process. This study identifies the role of ITM and emphasizes the urgent need for firms to embed other mediating factors into their approaches to achieve SPM process goals in the service supply chain context.

Research limitations/implications

The study offers important implications to researchers as well as practitioners by highlighting the significance of mediating roles for ITM to achieve SPM process.

Originality/value

This research is among the initial attempts to argue the impact of ITM on SPM through mediators.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to explore the mediating role of strategy. First, we examine whether strategy mediates the relationship between competitive pressure and SPM. Second, we examine whether the strategy mediates the relationship between stakeholder pressure and SPM.

Design/methodology/approach

This study is designed as a quantitative study by utilizing partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) in order to test the hypotheses. A mediation model for the research framework was developed to investigate the mediating role of strategy.

Findings

Using a sample of 546 managers from higher education institutions (HEIs) in Indonesia, the results show that both competitive pressure and stakeholder pressure have a positive direct effect on SPM. Strategy fully mediates the relationship between competitive pressure and SPM and strategy also partially mediates the relationship between stakeholder pressure and SPM. The findings suggest that the management of the HEIs in Indonesia needs to accommodate the dynamic trends in the competitive environment and the stakeholder’s interests when they develop the strategy used. They need to build a reliable SPM to effectively execute the strategy.

Research limitations/implications

This study has the following limitations: (1) the use of PLS-SEM may raise the issue of causality; (2) this study focuses only on the antecedents of the SPM, and therefore future studies should investigate the consequences of the SPM on other variables; (3) this study is context-specific for Indonesia and caution should be used when generalizing it to other countries; (5) this study employs the primary data that may raise the issue of perception bias, and therefore future studies should try to develop proxies of variables using secondary data.

Practical implications

This research provides a comprehensive understanding of the management of HEIs who wants to enhance their SPM. This suggests that management needs to verify the role of strategy. In the era of global competition in higher education, management needs to start from the dynamics of competitive intensity and stakeholder interest. Competition and cooperation need to be considered in their strategies if they want to survive in the higher education industry. Finally, management must be aware that they are now assessed using quantitative indicators, standardized processes, and algorithms, and therefore they need to have a more reliable SPM.

Social implications

As the global competition increases in higher education, this research provides a model on how to improve the good university governance involving the strategy and the SPM. Higher education plays an extremely important role in society. This study provides a model that can be used by society to have better control of the HEIs by demanding improved good governance. This research provides empirical evidence of the importance of the strategy and the SPM. The society will get more benefits in terms of improved transparency, accountability, fairness, and responsibility of the HEIs.

Originality/value

This is the first study that explores the links between competitive pressure, stakeholder pressure, strategy and SPM in Indonesian HEIs. It provides empirical evidence in the HEIs research setting for the industry/organization (I/O) theory of competitive advantage which focuses on the external factors. It also supports the resource-based view (RBV) model of competitive advantage which focuses on internal factors.
