Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to explore empirically the adoption of social networking services in corporate communication within the context of China.

Design/methodology/approach

After reviewing the extant literature on technology adoption, the paper proposes a conceptual model for studying the adoption of social networking in corporate communication. Based on this model a quantitative survey is carried out within the Chinese context to examine the key factors influencing consumers’ adoption of social networking services to engage with organisations.

Findings

The conceptual model proposed in this study offers a comprehensive overview of the adoption of social networking services through identifying various factors associated with ease of use, perceived usefulness, trust and loyalty and advertisement. Through adopting an empirical research strategy focusing on China, which has a high level of technology adoption, this study contributes towards providing a good understanding of how new technology‐enabled social media platforms can offer a more dynamic engagement between consumers and organisations.

Research limitations/implications

This research only focuses on exploring empirically the adoption of social networking services in one country and does not investigate how such factors may impact consumers’ adoption and continuity to use in that country or in a wider context.

Practical implications

The conceptual model in this study offers organisations including multinational ones and researchers a comprehensive overview of the adoption of social networking services in corporate communication, particularly in an emerging economy. The key findings of this study show how the ease of use of these platforms and services can facilitate a better engagement and communication between consumers and corporate organisations. In addition, the study indicates embedding social networking services platforms and services within the advertisement strategy for the organisation can contribute towards its success in reaching to a broader consumer range.

Originality/value

The core contribution of this research adds to the growing body of knowledge concerning the adoption of social networking services in emerging economies. In particular, the conceptual model formulated through the synthesis of extant literature offers researchers and practitioners valuable insights on appreciating the key issues that require consideration when organisations utilise social networking services to engage with consumers.

Abstract

Purpose

The main aim of this work is to explore the mechanisms that promote the transmission and reception of online opinions (electronic word-of-mouth (eWOM) and referrals) by travel services buyers in the context of social networks services (SNS).

Design/methodology/approach

The research examines two areas of study: social identification theory and word-of-mouth communication in the virtual environment (eWOM). Based on these theories an explicative model has been proposed applying structural equation modeling (SEM) analysis to a sample of SNS users buying travel services. Partial least squares was chosen as a method to conduct an SEM analysis.

Findings

First, the results support the central role of social identification in SNS communication. Second, the results show that SNS users give greater importance to the transmission of communication than to its reception. This fact supports the idea that SNS is used more as a tool for highlighting and maintaining social status than as a channel for information.

Originality/value

The study highlights the role of social identification as the core element which drives SNS. It then analyses the development of eWOM communication in the new context provided by SNS. In addition eWOM communication is studied from two perspectives: from the standpoint of the communicator, but also the receiver. Finally, it seems appropriate to differentiate between virtual communities discussing tourism (e.g. www.TripAdvisor.com) and the SNS (e.g. www.facebook.com, www.twitter.com). While the former seems to be a growing source of information, the latter acts rather more in a social context.

Abstract

Purpose

Users' continuance intention is vital to the future of mobile social networking service (SNS) with rapid development and intensive competitions among its providers. The purpose of this research is to identify the factors affecting mobile SNS users' continuance intention.

Design/methodology/approach

Data from an online survey administered to 228 mobile SNS users are used to test the research model through the use of structural equation modelling.

Findings

The results show that flow, perceived usefulness and satisfaction determine continuance intention of mobile SNS. Moreover, the authors found that referent network size and perceived complementarity are the main factors affecting flow, whereas information quality is the main factor affecting perceived usefulness. Only system quality significantly affects satisfaction.

Practical implications

The results imply that mobile service providers need to take the functional characteristics of the mobile SNS (e.g. system quality and information quality), network externalities (referent network size and perceived complementarity) and flow experience into consideration when encouraging users' continuance intention towards mobile SNS.

Originality/value

Extant research has focused on initial adoption and usage of mobile SNS and has seldom considered post-adoption usage, which is critical to mobile service providers' success. This research tries to fill the gap by examining continuance intention to use mobile SNS. The theory embedded within the IS success model, network externalities and flow theory articulated that these three research domains can be integrated to better understand the factors that influence mobile SNS users' continuance intention.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to identify factors affecting the continued intention to use mobile social network services (m-SNS) among middle-aged and older adults in Korea, based on the focal characteristics of mobile services and SNS.

Design/methodology/approach

Data were collected through an online questionnaire to understand m-SNS usage from 358 people aged over 40 years in Korea.

Findings

Results show that middle-aged and older users of m-SNS are strongly motivated to seek information; they prefer to use m-SNS on a habitual basis because of the ubiquitous connectivity of mobile services. Furthermore, they perceive the usefulness of m-SNS in expanding their social networks. These results can be used to identify factors that affect continued use of m-SNS by the middle-aged and older generation in Korea.

Originality/value

This paper expands the literature on SNS acceptance among middle-aged and older adults, the population that, in future, is expected to constitute the majority of m-SNS users. This paper can also help understand factors that affect mature consumers’ continued use of m-SNS.

Abstract

Purpose

Social networking services (SNS) sites such as Facebook and Twitter have increasingly established themselves as a new paradigm of communication. Due to the rapid popularization of mobile devices, mobile SNS are creating a particularly significant change in the way in which information is distributed. The purpose of this paper is to propose a mobile SNS system tailored for archival information services (AIS) in South Korea.

Design/methodology/approach

In order to find an appropriate service structure for the proposed AIS system, the authors conduct a case study of the existing mobile SNS sites. In addition to this, the authors investigate how mobile SNS are currently used in libraries and archives. Based on the results, they propose a mobile SNS structure suitable for the AIS system, for which a user interface and database is designed and implemented.

Findings

The proposed system can leverage mobile SNS to expand the accessibility of AIS and encourage active participation and cooperation from users.

Originality/value

The proposed system can improve the security vulnerabilities inherent in Facebook and Twitter; further, it can induce active user participation through two-way communication channels with users and also produce high-quality information by providing a communication space between the archiving experts.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to develop a research model examining users' perceived value of a location-based social networking service (LB-SNS) through hedonic, utilitarian, and social values. This study investigates the impact for each type of perceived value on user satisfaction, behavioural intention to use, and word-of-mouth for LB-SNS.

Design/methodology/approach

Data were collected from 172 Korean smartphone users with experience using LB-SNS. This study employed PLS to test the proposed model and corresponding hypotheses.

Findings

A positive influence exists for each type of perceived value on satisfaction with hedonic value having the strongest relationship. Hedonic value is positively correlated with behavioural intention to use LB-SNS and positive word-of-mouth while social value affects positive word-of-mouth. Utilitarian value did not influence either behavioural intention to use LB-SNS or positive word-of-mouth. User satisfaction has a significant influence on both behavioural intention to use LB-SNS and positive word-of-mouth.

Research limitations/implications

This study is at the forefront of research focused on LB-SNS adoption, extending beyond the utilitarian-hedonic value dichotomy to include a social dimension. This study confirmed that perceived value is an antecedent of satisfaction, which leads to behavioural intentions.

Practical implications

The advantages and benefits of LB-SNS should be emphasised to increase users' perceived value. LB-SNS providers can improve user satisfaction by increasing the hedonic, utilitarian, and social value of their services. Organisations should seek out and explore the possibilities of marketing campaigns through LB-SNS.

Originality/value

This study is the first empirical study examining user acceptance of LB-SNS incorporating users' perceived value satisfaction and behavioural intentions

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to understand music sharing behaviour on social networking services (SNS). This study suggests and examines a research model which focuses on the influences of user motivations, such as self‐expression, ingratiation, altruism, and interactivity, on music sharing behaviour in SNS through social motivation factors.

Design/methodology/approach

Data were collected from 153 Korean SNS (i.e. Cyworld, Naver Blog, Daum Blog, and Tistory) users, who have experience in purchasing music and legally sharing it on SNS. The partial least squares method was used to analyse the measurement and structural models.

Findings

The study shows that interactivity, perceived ease of use, self‐expression, social presence, and social identity are significant positive predictors of music sharing intention on SNS.

Research limitations/implications

This research is significant in light of recent interest in user activities in SNS. Better understanding of the music sharing behaviour on SNS can be prompted by reflecting cultural differences in selecting the SNS for validation with a larger sample size.

Practical implications

The findings emphasise the importance of providing users with interactive, self‐expressive, and easily manageable services in order to increase their intention to share music through SNS. Service providers need to focus on improving the user experience of the systems.

Originality/value

SNS based online music services have been increasing and are a new business model of music content distribution. However no academic research has examined music related services on SNS. This study is the first empirical study analysing music sharing behaviour on SNS.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to explore how social network fatigue affects continuance intention of social networking services (SNSs) from a more comprehensive perspective.

Design/methodology/approach

A research model was proposed by integrating uses and gratification theory (UGT), social network fatigue and continuance intention. The relationships between the three dimensions of UGT and continuance intention were examined, as well as the direct and moderating effects of social network fatigue. To collect data, an online survey was adopted, and 227 valid responses were analyzed by structural equation modeling.

Findings

The empirical findings demonstrate that utilitarian gratification (information seeking), social gratification (social interaction) and hedonic gratification (perceived enjoyment) are positively associated with SNS users’ continuance intention. Meanwhile, social network fatigue can directly and negatively affect continuance intention. Furthermore, the relationships between the two dimensions of UGT (information seeking, perceived enjoyment) and continuance intention are also negatively moderated by social network fatigue.

Originality/value

This study contributes to the understanding about the relationship between continuance intention and social network fatigue. The authors indicate that social network fatigue will not only directly weaken SNS users’ continuance intention, but also negatively influence the formation process of the continuance intention. Some other theoretical and practical implications are also provided.

Abstract

Purpose

Although there are a number of studies on the factors affecting the continuance usage intention for social network services (SNS), the studies on the integrated model encompassing SNS qualities (information, system, and service quality, and hedonic value, which are gratifications for SNS usage), flow, relationship quality (which are trust and satisfaction), and continuance intention are almost non-existent. Based on Bagozzi’s self-regulation framework, the IS success model, uses and gratification theory, and flow theory, the purpose of this paper is to examine the qualities and hedonic value of SNS, which have an influence on flow experience and relationship quality which are posited to affect the continuance usage intention.

Design/methodology/approach

This study used an e-mail survey method to collect 460 questionnaires for the final sample. The sample of the study includes college students or job workers who have experience in using SNS. Various user categories in terms of gender, school degree, occupation, usage years, and daily time of usage were included.

Findings

The study results show that system, service quality, and hedonic value have an impact on flow experience, information and service quality, and hedonic value influence the relationship quality of SNS. The flow experience and relationship quality while using SNS affect the continuance usage intention of SNS. This results show that the consideration of various SNS qualities, hedonic value, flow experience, and relationship quality is necessary to actively explore the factors for continuance usage intention for SNS.

Practical implications

IS managers trying to understand reuse intent can use surveys on information, system, and service quality, and hedonic value. Practitioners should constantly incorporate and develop various activities or useful applications to allow people to reach out to each other, to reinforce users’ attention, interaction, and increase social connections, trust, satisfaction, and further intensify users’ intention to use, increasing SNS value. The findings explain a mechanism through which SNS users’ continuance intention is built. Understanding this mechanism provides valuable information for practitioners to understand the qualities driving SNS users’ intention to revisit SNS.

Originality/value

This study sheds light on the existing literature on website usage that focuses on the design qualities as this paper has combined website quality perspective, i.e., information, system, and service quality, and hedonic value, and the flow and relationship perspective to investigate how these constructs would affect users’ intention to continuously use SNS. On the basis of four theories, Bagozzi’s self-regulation framework, IS success model, users and gratification theory, and flow theory, this study extended the previous studies on SNS by adding information, system, and service quality, hedonic value, flow and relationship quality as second-order constructs affecting continuance intention.

Abstract

Purpose

People's socializing behavior in social networking services (SNS) presents dramatically different features, forming differentiated online social interaction patterns (DOSIP) in SNS. This study aims to explore the relationships between users' multidimensional psychological needs and multiple social interaction patterns in SNS.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on Maslow's hierarchy of needs and use and gratifications (U&G) theory, the authors develop the research model to examine the effects of psychological needs on DOSIP. A survey is used to collect the data of SNS users' social interaction. The authors adopt structural equation modeling–neural network (SEM-NN) integrated method to examine the research model.

Findings

Need to belong, need for self-esteem, need for social contact, need for emotional expression, need for cognition, and need for external-esteem have significant influences on both active and passive social interactions respectively.

Originality/value

Based on the categorization of DOSIP into six types in terms of the level of activity and disclosure of social interaction, the authors construct an integrated research model of multidimensional psychological needs to multiple social interaction patterns, and validate the antecedents of DOSIP from the perspective of psychological needs.
