Abstract

Purpose

A new cutting tool is always well-defined and sharp at the onset of the metal cutting process and gradually losses these properties as the machining process advances. Similarly, at the beginning of the machining process, amplitude of tool vibrations is considerably low and it increases gradually and peaks at the end of the service period of the cutting tool while machining. It is significant to provide a corresponding real-time varying damping to control this chatter, which directly influences accuracy and quality of productivity. This paper aims to review the literature related to the application of smart fluid to control vibration in metal cutting and also focused on the challenges involved in the implementation of active control system during machining process.

Design/methodology/approach

Smart dampers, which are used as semi-active and active dampers in metal cutting, were reviewed and the research studies carried out in the field of the magnetorheological (MR) damper were concentrated. In smart materials, MR fluids possess some disadvantages because of their sedimentation of iron particles, leakage and slow response time. To overcome these drawbacks, new MR materials such as MR foam, MR elastomers, MR gels and MR plastomers have been recommended and suggested. This review intents to throw light into available literature which exclusively deals with controlling chatter in metal cutting with the help of MR damping methods.

Findings

Using an MR damper popularly known for its semi-active damping characteristics is very adaptable and flexible in controlling chatter by providing damping to real-time amplitudes of tool vibration. In the past, many researchers have attempted to implement MR damper in metal cutting to control vibration and were successful. Various methods with the help of MR fluid are illustrated.

Research limitations/implications

A new cutting tool is always well-defined and sharp at the onset of metal cutting process and gradually losses these properties as the machining process advances. Similarly, at the beginning of the machining process, amplitude of tool vibrations is considerably low and it increases gradually and peaks at the end of service period of cutting tool while machining. Application of MR damper along with the working methodology in metal cutting is presented, challenges met are analyzed and a scope for development is reviewed.

Practical implications

This study provides corresponding real-time varying damping to control tool vibration which directly influences accuracy and quality of productivity. Using an MR damper popularly known for its semi-active damping characteristics is very adaptable and flexible in controlling chatter by providing damping to real-time amplitudes of tool vibration.

Social implications

This study attempts to implement smart damper in metal cutting to control vibrations.

Abstract

The Winslow effect (increased viscosity of a colloidal suspension with an applied electric field) has been suggested as a possible medium for torque transmission since its discovery by Winslow nearly half a century ago. Unfortunately, despite efforts to improve the fluids and eliminate their shortcomings, the dream has been largely unrealised. Recent advances in the engineering aspects of electrorheologically activated devices has led to the development of techniques which offer the possibility of producing workable actuators. Work at the University of Hull has shown how existing electrorheological fluids may be made to work satisfactorily by careful consideration of the fluids' physical, as well as chemical and electrical properties. A related electroviscous effect has been discovered which in some cases reduces, or even obviates, the need for the solid particle suspension.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to control a landing gear system with an oleo-pneumatic shock absorber with the fuzzy controller.

Design/methodology/approach

The landing gear system with an oleo-pneumatic shock absorber is modeled mathematically. A fuzzy controller is designed for reducing aircraft vibrations. Stroke velocity and main mass velocity parameters were used to decide variable gas pressure with the fuzzy controller.

Findings

The fuzzy controller, designed according to stroke velocity and main mass velocity, reduces aircraft vibrations by the landing impacts. The controller can provide strong robustness because it shows similar good performance for different descent speeds.

Research limitations/implications

This study was carried out through simulations in a computer environment and has not been experimentally tested in a real environment. In addition, signal and measurement delays are not taken into account. In future models, the effects of these signal delays can be added, and the controller can be tested on a real model.

Originality/value

In this study, to the best of the authors’ knowledge, for the first time, the gas pressure for the landing gear system using an oleo-pneumatic shock absorber was controlled by a fuzzy controller that adjusts the stroke velocity and the main mass velocity. Although the oleo-pneumatic shock absorber model contains high nonlinearities, the designed fuzzy controller gave successful results as robust.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present, for the first time, a mathematical model for a piston skirt in mixed lubrication with respect to applying a smart fluid in lubrication. In this way, the smart fluid, as a lubricant with controlled variable viscosity, is proposed and applied to minimize the power loss in the interaction between liner and skirt.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on signal processing, the relationships between viscosity of lubricant and the friction loss, the hydrodynamic and contact friction force consequently are found, as part of an effective approach to acquire the function of variable viscosity.

Findings

It is shown that hydrodynamics and contact friction forces can be controlled and minimized by using the variable viscosity signal with the optimized viscosity signal technique.

Originality/value

In this paper, a mathematical model for a piston skirt in mixed lubrication with respect to applying a smart fluid in lubrication is presented for the first time.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to numerically investigate the two-dimensional unsteady laminar magnetohydrodynamic bioconvection flow and heat transfer of an electrically conducting non-Newtonian Casson thin film with uniform thickness over a horizontal elastic sheet emerging from a slit in the presence of viscous dissipation. The composite effects of variable heat, mass, nanoparticle volume fraction and gyrotactic micro-organism flux are considered as is hydrodynamic (wall) slip. The Buongiorno nanoscale model is deployed which features Brownian motion and thermophoresis effects. The model studies the manufacturing fluid dynamics of smart magnetic bio-nano-polymer coatings.

Design/methodology/approach

The coupled non-linear partial differential boundary-layer equations governing the flow, heat and nano-particle and micro-organism mass transfer are reduced to a set of coupled non-dimensional equations using the appropriate transformations and then solved as an nonlinear boundary value problem with the semi-numerical Liao homotopy analysis method (HAM).Validation with a generalized differential quadrature (GDQ) numerical technique is included.

Findings

An increase in velocity slip results in a significant decrement in skin friction coefficient and Sherwood number, whereas it generates a substantial enhancement in Nusselt number and motile micro-organism number density. The computations reveal that the bioconvection Schmidt number decreases the micro-organism concentration and boundary-layer thickness which is attributable to a rise in viscous diffusion rate. Increasing bioconvection Péclet number substantially elevates the temperatures in the regime, thermal boundary layer thickness, nanoparticle concentration values and nano-particle species boundary layer thickness. The computations demonstrate the excellent versatility of HAM and GDQ in solving nonlinear multi-physical nano-bioconvection flows in thermal sciences and furthermore are relevant to application in the synthesis of smart biopolymers, microbial fuel cell coatings, etc.

Research limitations/implications

The numerical study is valid for two-dimensional, unsteady, laminar Casson film flow with nanoparticles over an elastic sheet in presence of variable heat, mass and nanoparticle volume fraction flux. The film has uniform thickness and flow is transpiring from slit which is fixed at origin.

Social implications

The study has significant applications in the manufacturing dynamics of nano-bio-polymers and the magnetic field control of materials processing systems. Furthermore, it is relevant to application in the synthesis of smart biopolymers, microbial fuel cell coatings, etc.

Originality/value

The originality of the study is to address the simultaneous effects of unsteady and variable surface fluxes on Casson nanofluid transport of gyrotactic bio-convection thin film over a stretching sheet in the presence of a transverse magnetic field. Validation of HAM with a GDQ numerical technique is included. The present numerical approaches (HAM and GDQ) offer excellent promise in simulating such multi-physical problems of interest in thermal thin film rheological fluid dynamics.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to propose a new hydrostatic squeeze film damper compensated with electrorheological valve restrictors to control the nonlinear dynamic behavior of a rigid rotor caused by high unbalance eccentricity ratio. To investigate the effect of electrorheological valve restrictors on the dynamic behavior of a rigid rotor, a nonlinear model is developed and presented.

Design/methodology/approach

The nonlinear results are compared with those obtained from a linear approach. The results show good agreement between the linear and nonlinear methods when the unbalanced force is small. The effects of unbalance eccentricity ratio and electric field on the vibration response and the bearing transmitted force are investigated using the nonlinear models.

Findings

The results of simulation performed that the harmonics generated by high unbalance eccentricities can be reduced by using hydrostatic squeeze film damper compensated with electrorheological valve restrictors.

Originality/value

The numerical results demonstrate that this type of smart hydrostatic squeeze film damper provides to hydrostatic designers a new bearing configuration suitable to control rotor vibrations and bearing transmitted forces, especially for high speed.

Abstract

Purpose

An electrorheological (ER) fluid comprises dielectric particles suspended in an insulating viscous medium. ER lubricants are considered smart lubricants. They have been applied in hydraulic valves, power transmission devices and damping systems. The purpose of this study is to investigate the performance of hydrostatic thrust bearing operating with ER lubricant.

Design/methodology/approach

Reynold’s equation was used to model the flow of the ER lubricant in the bearing. The continuous Bingham model was used to express the viscosity of the ER lubricant as a function of yielding stress, applied electric field and shear strain rate. The Reynolds equation is solved using the finite element method (weighted residual approach) to compute the film pressure as a primary variable and the lubricant flow rate, load-carrying capacity, stiffness and damping parameters as associated performance indices.

Findings

The effects of the pocket shape, compensating elements and ER lubricant on the bearing performance were investigated. The application of ER lubricant significantly enhanced the load-carrying capacity (48.2%), stiffness (49.8%) and damping (4.95%) of the bearings. Circular and triangular pocket bearings with constant-flow valves have been reported to provide better steady-state and rotor-dynamic performances, respectively.

Originality/value

This study presents the effect of an ER lubricant on the rotor-dynamic performance of hydrostatic thrust bearings with different pocket shapes.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this review paper is to address the substantial challenges of the outdated exoskeletons used for rehabilitation and further study the current advancements in this field. The shortcomings and technological developments in sensing the input signals to enable the desired motions, actuation, control and training methods are explained for further improvements in exoskeleton research.

Design/methodology/approach

Search platforms such as Web of Science, IEEE, Scopus and PubMed were used to collect the literature. The total number of recent articles referred to in this review paper with relevant keywords is filtered to 143.

Findings

Exoskeletons are getting smarter often with the integration of various modern tools to enhance the effectiveness of rehabilitation. The recent applications of bio signal sensing for rehabilitation to perform user-desired actions promote the development of independent exoskeleton systems. The modern concepts of artificial intelligence and machine learning enable the implementation of brain–computer interfacing (BCI) and hybrid BCIs in exoskeletons. Likewise, novel actuation techniques are necessary to overcome the significant challenges seen in conventional exoskeletons, such as the high-power requirements, poor back drivability, bulkiness and low energy efficiency. Implementation of suitable controller algorithms facilitates the instantaneous correction of actuation signals for all joints to obtain the desired motion. Furthermore, applying the traditional rehabilitation training methods is monotonous and exhausting for the user and the trainer. The incorporation of games, virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) technologies in exoskeletons has made rehabilitation training far more effective in recent times. The combination of electroencephalogram and electromyography-based hybrid BCI is desirable for signal sensing and controlling the exoskeletons based on user intentions. The challenges faced with actuation can be resolved by developing advanced power sources with minimal size and weight, easy portability, lower cost and good energy storage capacity. Implementation of novel smart materials enables a colossal scope for actuation in future exoskeleton developments. Improved versions of sliding mode control reported in the literature are suitable for robust control of nonlinear exoskeleton models. Optimizing the controller parameters with the help of evolutionary algorithms is also an effective method for exoskeleton control. The experiments using VR/AR and games for rehabilitation training yielded promising results as the performance of patients improved substantially.

Research limitations/implications

Robotic exoskeleton-based rehabilitation will help to reduce the fatigue of physiotherapists. Repeated and intention-based exercise will improve the recovery of the affected part at a faster pace. Improved rehabilitation training methods like VR/AR-based technologies help in motivating the subject.

Originality/value

The paper describes the recent methods for signal sensing, actuation, control and rehabilitation training approaches used in developing exoskeletons. All these areas are key elements in an exoskeleton where the review papers are published very limitedly. Therefore, this paper will stand as a guide for the researchers working in this domain.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to explore the discrepancies between the services provided by municipalities through e-Government portals and the services sought by residents in the context of smart cities.

Design/methodology/approach

This research investigates the information and services delivered by municipalities via e-Government portals and the services that residents wish to access through these portals. A mind map representation of ideas from 707 participants is used to visually illustrate the proposed e-Government portal structure based on user recommendations.

Findings

The findings reveal that existing e-Government portals fall short in offering a comprehensive range of e-services desired by residents. The results highlight the need for municipal e-Government websites to grant residents access to a diverse array of services and information. It is crucial to note that the specific services may fluctuate over time and between cities, reflecting the evolving needs of residents and the capabilities of municipalities.

Originality/value

This study is original in its focus on bridging the gap between existing e-Government portals and residents’ preferences, using a mind map representation to visually illustrate the proposed portal structure based on user recommendations. The research emphasizes the importance of considering residents’ needs in terms of services and functionalities and adapting websites accordingly.

Abstract

Purpose

This study investigates the relationship between the strength of innovative entrepreneurial ecosystems and subjective well-being in 43 European smart cities. Subjective well-being is operationalized by a Quality of Life (QOL) survey that references the level of multidimensional satisfaction or happiness expressed by residents at the city level. The entrepreneurial ecosystem concept depicted here highlights actor interdependence that creates new value in a specific community by undertaking innovative entrepreneurial activities. The research uses objective and subjective variables to analyze the relationships between the entrepreneurial ecosystem and subjective well-being.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors conducted a cluster analysis with a nonaggregative quantitative approach based on the theory of the partially ordered set (poset); the objective was to find significant smart city level relationships between the entrepreneurial ecosystem and subjective well-being.

Findings

The strength of the entrepreneurial ecosystem is positively related to subjective well-being only in large cities. This result confirms a strong interdependency between the creation of innovative entrepreneurial activities and subjective well-being in large cities. The smart cities QOL dimensions showing higher correlations with the entrepreneurial ecosystem include urban welfare, economic well-being and environmental quality, such as information and communications technology (ICT) and mobility.

Practical implications

Despite the main implications being properly referred to large cities, the governments of smart cities should encourage and promote programs to improve citizens' subjective well-being and to create a conducive entrepreneurship environment.

Originality/value

This study is one of the few contributions focused on the relationship between the entrepreneurial smart city ecosystem and subjective well-being in the urban environment.
