Abstract
Destinations have in the scholarly literature been labeled as communities of interdependent organizations that collectively coproduce a variety of products and services. The paradigm comes close to describing destinations as firms which are embedded in interfirm networks. Recent studies provide crucial insights into an understanding of destinations' orchestration and structuration as coproducing interfirm networks. However, systematic knowledge about how these systems evolve and develop is lacking. This chapter addresses this issue and elaborates how the concepts of scale-free and small-world networks together can explain the process of destination evolution. The discussion also suggests how such theorizing can spur avenues for future research.

Abstract
Purpose
A small-world network is a type of network structure in which nodes are highly clustered and at short distances without being directly linked. This article analyzes whether the network of interlocking directorates among the largest Brazilian corporations follows a small-world network structure and if the small-world properties (high clustering and short distance between nodes) influence the occurrence of M&A at the domestic and international level.
Design/methodology/approach
The authors tested hypotheses regarding the relationship between small-world network properties and M&A based on a sample of large publicly-listed corporations in Brazil for the time series of 2000–2015 and using network analysis and regression techniques (probit and OLS).
Findings
The results show that while the Brazilian corporate network fits the small-world features of high clustering and short path lengths, only the distance among connected firms has a significant effect on international M&A: the shorter the distance between firms, the more likely firms undertake M&A abroad. Moreover, being integrated into the main component has a significant positive effect on national and international M&A. These findings suggest that the information and knowledge to undertake M&A can be better acquired by belonging to large business communities and not local cohesive clusters.
Originality/value
This research contributes to theories and ongoing debates about the network effects on organizational decisions and the determinants of M&A in emerging markets. In addition, this is the first study to analyze the impact of small-world networks on international M&A while controlling for country-level variables.

Abstract
In this chapter we investigate the ownership and control of UK firms using contemporary methods from computational graph theory. Specifically, we analyze a ‘small-world’ model of ownership and control. A small-world is a network whose actors are linked by a short chain of acquaintances (short path lengths), but at the same time have a strongly overlapping circle of friends (high clustering). We simulate a set of corporate worlds using an ensemble of random graphs introduced by Chung and Lu (2002a, 2002b). We find that the corporate governance network structures analyzed here are more clustered (‘clubby’) than would be predicted by the random-graph model. Path lengths, though, are generally not shorter than expected. In addition, we investigate the role of financial institutions: potentially important conduits creating connectivity in corporate networks. We find such institutions give rise to systematically different network topologies.

Abstract
This chapter details the theory of information worlds and its relation to studies of information behaviour, providing a framework for examining information behaviour in a variety of settings. Since information and its related technologies impact every aspect of life in advanced societies, it is of great importance to create a stronger theoretical understanding of information beahviours across social contexts. Information behaviour is simultaneously shaped by immediate influences, such as friends, family and other trusted small world sources, and by larger social influences, including public sphere institutions, media, technology and politics. Information behaviours of all sorts are situated and contextualized, given meaning by the multi-tiered contexts within which they occur. Drawing on the works of Jürgen Habermas, who studied information flow across the largest social structures, and Elfreda Chatman, who focused on the smallest social units, the theory explores information behaviour across all of the levels –– the small worlds of everyday life, mediating social institutions and technologies, the concerns of an entire society and broad political and economic forces. After detailing antecedents and exploring the theory's core concepts, the chapter investigates the theory's relevance for research on information behaviour and discusses the theory in light of other approaches to studying information behaviour, arguing that it provides a strong foundation for understanding and analysing the complex interwoven contexts within which we interact with information.

Abstract
The present study increases our understanding of strong power in exchange networks by examining its incidence in complex networks for the first time and relating this incidence to characteristics of these networks. A theoretical analysis based on network exchange theory (e.g., Willer, 1999) suggests two network characteristics predicting strong power; actors with only one potential exchange partner, and the absence of triangles, that is, one's potential exchange partners are not each other's partners. Different large-scale structures such as trees, small worlds, buyer–seller, uniform, and scale-free networks are shown to differ in these two characteristics and are therefore predicted to differ with respect to the incidence of strong power. The theoretical results and those obtained by simulating networks up to size 144 show that the incidence of strong power mainly depends on the density of the network. For high density no strong power is observed in all but buyer–seller networks, whereas for low density strong power is frequent but dependent on the large-scale structure and the two aforementioned network characteristics.

Abstract
Syndicated investments in startups within a particular industry follow an evolutionary path consistent with models of industry growth and evolution. Some industries spend a long time gestating, while others grow and mature quickly. Entry into ecommerce industry segments has both characteristics. What spurred the sector's slow emergence and subsequent quick rise? One obvious answer is the development of the Internet in the mid-1990s. However, a competing possibility is that the diffusion pattern resembles an epidemic among venture capital firms. This chapter examines how the existing structure of the VC syndication network in the US enabled such an epidemic. Consistent with existing theory on the spread of a disease in a small world, this study argues that the incidence of investments in ecommerce startups was a function of prior investments located on shortcuts in the network. The time frame is 1980 to just before the NASDAQ boom in 1999.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper serves to test the validity of Chatman’s theory of “Life Lived in the Round” within a modern prison context. In particular, it examines Propositions Five and Six of her theory.
Design/methodology/approach
Data regarding the information-seeking practices of Australian adult female and male prisoners from maximum-, medium- and minimum-security facilities was gathered through 106 surveys and 27 semi-structured interviews. Participants’ information-seeking from sources internal and external to the “small world” of the prison was described. The information behaviours of the participants were examined against Chatman’s theory of “Life in the Round” to determine its applicability in the prison context.
Findings
The data gathered does not support Chatman’s theory of “Life Lived in the Round”, despite that theory being developed in a prison context. Neither Proposition Five nor Proposition Six of Chatman’s theory can be supported when examined in the light of the current data.
Research limitations/implications
The inability of the data to support Chatman’s theory requires a reassessment of the applicability of the theory, at least to the prison context. As the theory was generated in part from a prison study, the foundational understandings of the theory could be questioned as a result of this current research.
Originality/value
Although Chatman’s theory has been examined against the information behaviours of other “Small World” communities, none of these studies have taken the theory back to the prison context from which the theory was developed. This study is also novel as its findings do not support Chatman’s theory, in contrast to other previously published examinations.

Purpose
Many networks take a small-world structure, with a high degree of clustering and shortcut ties that reduce the path-length between the clusters. It can be argued that small-world networks have benefits that are simultaneously related to network closures and the spanning of structural holes, but research on the network members’ performance is nonetheless inconclusive. The purpose of this paper is to argue that the concept of resource idiosyncrasy can explain the mixed findings. Firm idiosyncratic resources are not easily generalizable across enterprises.
Design/methodology/approach
Industries may vary in terms of resource idiosyncrasy, and the paper elaborates how this can moderate shortcut ties’ effect on performance in an inter-firm network.
Findings
If resource idiosyncrasy predominates in an industry, the paper proposes that inter-firm shortcut ties may increase performance, whereas shortcut ties may decrease performance if non-idiosyncratic resources predominate.
Originality/value
Applying the concept of resource idiosyncrasy as a moderating variable, the paper aims to explain shortcut ties’ effect on performance in an inter-firm network. The theory advanced here can have practical implications and also motivate future empirical studies to gain further knowledge about small-world networks’ effect on performance.

Purpose
The assembly sequence in the product assembly process has effect on the final product quality. To solve the assembly sequence optimization problem, such as rotor blade assembly sequence optimization, this paper proposes a small world networks-based genetic algorithm (SWN_GA) to solve the assembly sequence optimization problem. The proposed approach SWN_GA consists of a combination between the standard Genetic Algorithm and the NW Small World Networks.
Design/methodology/approach
The selection operation and the crossover operation are improved in this paper. The selection operation remains the elite individuals that have greater fitness than average fitness and reselects the individuals that have smaller fitness than average fitness. The crossover operation combines the NW Small World Networks to select the crossover individuals and calculate the crossover probability.
Findings
In this paper, SWN_GA is used to optimize the assembly sequence of steam turbine rotor blades, and the SWN_GA was compared with standard GA and PSO algorithm in a simulation experiment. The simulation results show that SWN_GA cannot only find a better assembly sequence which have lower rotor imbalance, but also has a faster convergence rate.
Originality/value
Finally, an experiment about the assembly of a steam turbine rotor is conducted, and SWN_GA is applied to optimize the blades assembly sequence. The feasibility and effectiveness of SWN_GA are verified through the experimental result.

Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to study the failures spread in complex power grids, and what topology of power grids is best for preventing or reducing blackouts.
Design/methodology/approach
Based on the study of cascading failure models of complex power networks, an extended dynamical cascading failure model is proposed. Based on this model, two representatives of the complex power grids, the small‐world network and the scale‐free network, were simulated for line cascading failure. The power loss caused by cascading failures and the spreading speed of cascading failure are discussed.
Findings
Power loss caused by cascading failures in the small‐world network is much larger than that in the scale‐free network, and the speed of cascading failure propagation in the small‐world network is much faster than that in the scale‐free network.
Research limitations/implications
The establishment of the dynamical cascading failure model considering other protection devices needs further study.
Practical implications
The results of this study can be beneficial in system planning and upgrading.
Originality/value
An extended dynamical cascading failure model is proposed and cascading failures in different topology of power grid are discussed.
