Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to compare the accuracy of tracking the amplitude and frequency changes of non‐stationary electric signals.

Design/methodology/approach

Short‐time fourier transform (STFT) and S‐transform algorithms were applied to analyze non‐stationary signals originating from switching of capacitor banks in a power system.

Findings

The S‐transform showed possibilities of sharp localization of the basic component, and allowed improvement of tracking dynamism the transient components in comparison to STFT.

Practical implications

S‐transform is a better tool for the analysis of non‐stationary waveforms in power systems and its properties can be used for diagnostic and power quality applications.

Originality/value

The dynamic tracking of the changes in time and frequency of real‐like signals originating from a power system are investigated in this paper.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to study the fault diagnosis of internal combustion (IC) engine gearbox using vibration signals with signal processing and machine learning (ML) techniques.

Design/methodology/approach

Vibration signals from the gearbox are acquired for healthy and induced faulty conditions of the gear. In this study, 50% tooth fault and 100% tooth fault are chosen as gear faults in the driver gear. The acquired signals are processed and analyzed using signal processing and ML techniques.

Findings

The obtained results show that variation in the amplitude of the crankshaft rotational frequency (CRF) and gear mesh frequency (GMF) for different conditions of the gearbox with various load conditions. ML techniques were also employed in developing the fault diagnosis system using statistical features. J48 decision tree provides better classification accuracy about 85.1852% in identifying gearbox conditions.

Practical implications

The proposed approach can be used effectively for fault diagnosis of IC engine gearbox. Spectrum and continuous wavelet transform (CWT) provide better information about gear fault conditions using time–frequency characteristics.

Originality/value

In this paper, experiments are conducted on real-time running condition of IC engine gearbox while considering combustion. Eddy current dynamometer is attached to output shaft of the engine for applying load. Spectrum, cepstrum, short-time Fourier transform (STFT) and wavelet analysis are performed. Spectrum, cepstrum and CWT provide better information about gear fault conditions using time–frequency characteristics. ML techniques were used in analyzing classification accuracy of the experimental data to detect the gearbox conditions using various classifiers. Hence, these techniques can be used for detection of faults in the IC engine gearbox and other reciprocating/rotating machineries.

Abstract

Provides an introduction into wavelets and illustrates their application with two examples. The wavelet transform provides the analyst with a scaleable time‐frequency representation of the signal, which may uncover details not evidenced by conventional signal processing techniques. The signals used in this paper are Doppler ultrasound recordings of blood flow velocity taken from the internal carotid artery and the femoral artery. Shows how wavelets can be used as an alternative signal processing tool to the short time Fourier transform for the extraction of the time‐frequency distribution of Doppler ultrasound signals. Implements wavelet‐based adaptive filtering for the extraction of maximum blood velocity envelopes in the post processing of Doppler signals.

Abstract

Purpose

About 13 to 44 per cent of motor faults are caused by bearing failures in induction motors (IMs), where lubrication plays a significant role in maintaining rotating equipment because it minimizes friction and prevents wear by separating parts that move next to each other, and more than 35 per cent of bearing failures can be attributed to improper lubrication. An excessive amount of grease causes the rollers or balls to slide along the race instead of turning, and the grease will actually churn. This churning action will eventually wear down the base oil of the grease and all that will be left to lubricate the bearing is a thickener system with little or no lubricating properties. The heat generated from the churning, insufficient lubricating oil will begin to harden the grease, and this will prevent any new grease added to the bearing from reaching the rolling elements, with the consequence of bearing failure and equipment downtime. Regarding the case of grease excess in bearings, this case has not been sufficiently studied. This work aims to present an effective methodology applied to the detection and automatic classification of mechanical bearing faults and bearing excessively lubricated conditions in an IM through the Margenau-Hill distribution (MHD) and artificial neural networks (ANNs), where the obtained results demonstrate the correct classification of the studied cases.

Design/methodology/approach

This work proposed an effective methodology applied to the detection and automatic classification of mechanical bearing faults and bearing excessively lubricated conditions in an IM through the MHD and ANNs.

Findings

In this paper, three cases of study for a bearing in an IM are studied, detected and classified correctly by combining some methods. The marginal frequency is obtained from the MHD, which in turn is achieved from the stator current signal, and a total of six features are estimated from the power spectrum, and these features are forwarded to the designed ANN with three output neurons, where each one represents a condition in the IM: healthy bearing, mechanical bearing fault and excessively lubricated bearing.

Practical implications

The proposed methodology can be applied to other applications; it could be useful to use a time–frequency representation through the MHD for obtaining the energy density distribution of the signal frequency components through time for analysis, evaluation and identification of faults or conditions in the IM for example; therefore, the proposed methodology has a generalized nature that allows its application for detecting other conditions or even multiple conditions under different working conditions by a proper calibration.

Originality/value

The lubrication plays a significant role in maintaining rotating equipment because it minimizes friction and prevents wear by separating parts that move next to each other, and more than 35 per cent of bearing failures can be attributed to improper lubrication and it negatively affects the efficiency of the motor, resulting in higher operating costs. Therefore, in this work, a new methodology is proposed for the detection and automatic classification of mechanical bearing faults and bearing excessively lubricated conditions in an IM through the MHD and ANNs. The proposed methodology uses a total of six features estimated from the power spectrum, and these features are sent to the designed ANN with three output neurons, where each one represents a condition in the IM: healthy bearing, mechanical bearing fault and excessively lubricated bearing. From the obtained results, it was demonstrated that the proposed approach achieves higher classification performance, compared to short-time Fourier transform, Gabor transform and Wigner-Ville distribution methods, allowing to identify mechanical bearing faults and bearing excessively lubricated conditions in an IM, with a remarkable 100 per cent effectiveness during classification for treated cases. Also, the proposed methodology has a generalized nature that allows its application for detecting other conditions or even multiple conditions under different working conditions by a proper calibration.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to extract features from vibration signals measured from induction motors subjected to accelerated aging of bearings by fluting tests.

Design/methodology/approach

Aging tests were performed according to IEEE test procedures. The data acquisition involved the measurement of vibration signals using accelerometers that were installed on the bearings and on the motor casing. In this application, only two accelerometers, which were placed near the process end of the motor bearing, are used for data analysis and feature extraction studies. After the data collection, information from the two sensors was combined using simple sensor fusion method under the linearity conditions, and then spectral analysis and time‐scale analysis were performed. The fused vibration signal is decomposed into several scales using continuous wavelet transform (CWT) and its first scale is used to indicate the bearing degradation.

Findings

Bearing damage characterization was determined between 2‐4 kHz and some specific frequencies were calculated as harmonics of the bearing characteristic frequencies.

Research limitations/implications

The bearing damage characteristics used in this study is occurred by the experimental study. In terms of the methodology, the use of the CWT shows the fault characteristics from the initial case.

Practical implications

The experimental study and data acquisition are based on the accelerated aging of the motor bearings. Hence, the real aging is represented by the accelerated one. But, this situation reflects same properties of the aging occurred in industrial environments. The methodology is also applicable to the hardware application.

Originality/value

There are two important aspects of this research: the experimental study and the application of CWT to get the potential defects, which will appear as a failure in future, from the healthy case of the motor bearings.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to prevent the destruction of other parts of a wind energy conversion system because of faults, the diagnosis of insulated-gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) faults has become an essential topic of study. Demand for sustainable energy sources has been prompted by rising environmental pollution and energy requirements. Renewable energy has been identified as a viable substitute for conventional fossil fuel energy generation. Because of its rapid installation time and adaptable expenditure for construction scale, wind energy has emerged as a great energy resource. Power converter failure is particularly significant for the reliable operation of wind power conversion systems because it not only has a high yearly fault rate but also a prolonged downtime. The power converters will continue to operate even after the failure, especially the open-circuit fault, endangering their other parts and impairing their functionality.

Design/methodology/approach

The most widely used signal processing methods for locating open-switch faults in power devices are the short-time Fourier transform and wavelet transform (WT) – based on time–frequency analysis. To increase their effectiveness, these methods necessitate the intensive use of computational resources. This study suggests a fault detection technique using empirical mode decomposition (EMD) that examines the phase currents from a power inverter. Furthermore, the intrinsic mode function’s relative energy entropy (REE) and simple logical operations are used to locate IGBT open switch failures.

Findings

The presented scheme successfully locates and detects 21 various classes of IGBT faults that could arise in a two-level three-phase voltage source inverter (VSI). To verify the efficacy of the proposed fault diagnosis (FD) scheme, the test is performed under various operating conditions of the power converter and induction motor load. The proposed method outperforms existing FD schemes in the literature in terms of fault coverage and robustness.

Originality/value

This study introduces an EMD–IMF–REE-based FD method for VSIs in wind turbine systems, which enhances the effectiveness and robustness of the FD method.

Abstract

Purpose

For achieving the profitable human activity recognition (HAR) method, this paper solves the HAR problem under wireless body area network (WBAN) using a developed ensemble learning approach. The purpose of this study is,to solve the HAR problem under WBAN using a developed ensemble learning approach for achieving the profitable HAR method. There are three data sets used for this HAR in WBAN, namely, human activity recognition using smartphones, wireless sensor data mining and Kaggle. The proposed model undergoes four phases, namely, “pre-processing, feature extraction, feature selection and classification.” Here, the data can be preprocessed by artifacts removal and median filtering techniques. Then, the features are extracted by techniques such as “t-Distributed Stochastic Neighbor Embedding”, “Short-time Fourier transform” and statistical approaches. The weighted optimal feature selection is considered as the next step for selecting the important features based on computing the data variance of each class. This new feature selection is achieved by the hybrid coyote Jaya optimization (HCJO). Finally, the meta-heuristic-based ensemble learning approach is used as a new recognition approach with three classifiers, namely, “support vector machine (SVM), deep neural network (DNN) and fuzzy classifiers.” Experimental analysis is performed.

Design/methodology/approach

The proposed HCJO algorithm was developed for optimizing the membership function of fuzzy, iteration limit of SVM and hidden neuron count of DNN for getting superior classified outcomes and to enhance the performance of ensemble classification.

Findings

The accuracy for enhanced HAR model was pretty high in comparison to conventional models, i.e. higher than 6.66% to fuzzy, 4.34% to DNN, 4.34% to SVM, 7.86% to ensemble and 6.66% to Improved Sealion optimization algorithm-Attention Pyramid-Convolutional Neural Network-AP-CNN, respectively.

Originality/value

The suggested HAR model with WBAN using HCJO algorithm is accurate and improves the effectiveness of the recognition.

Abstract

Purpose

The objective of this paper is to provide a brief review of recent developments in the area of applications of ANN, Fuzzy Logic, and Wavelet Transform in fault diagnosis. The purpose of this work is to provide an approach for maintenance engineers for online fault diagnosis through the development of a machine condition‐monitoring system.

Design/methodology/approach

A detailed review of previous work carried out by several researchers and maintenance engineers in the area of machine‐fault signature‐analysis is performed. A hybrid expert system is developed using ANN, Fuzzy Logic and Wavelet Transform. A Knowledge Base (KB) is created with the help of fuzzy membership function. The triangular membership function is used for the generation of the knowledge base. The fuzzy‐BP approach is used successfully by using LR‐type fuzzy numbers of wavelet‐packet decomposition features.

Findings

The development of a hybrid system, with the use of LR‐type fuzzy numbers, ANN, Wavelets decomposition, and fuzzy logic is found. Results show that this approach can successfully diagnose the bearing condition and that accuracy is good compared with conventionally EBPNN‐based fault diagnosis.

Practical implications

The work presents a laboratory investigation carried out through an experimental set‐up for the study of mechanical faults, mainly related to the rolling element bearings.

Originality/value

The main contribution of the work has been the development of an expert system, which identifies the fault accurately online. The approaches can now be extended to the development of a fault diagnostics system for other mechanical faults such as gear fault, coupling fault, misalignment, looseness, and unbalance, etc.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to include the diagnosis of an old concrete deck steel truss rural road bridge in the damaged and retrofitted state through vibration response signals.

Design/methodology/approach

The analysis of the vibration response signals is performed in time and time-frequency domains using statistical features-root mean square, impulse factor, crest factor, kurtosis, peak2peak and Stockwell transform. The proposed methodology uses the Hilbert transform in combination with spectral kurtosis and bandpass filtering technique for obtaining robust outcomes of modal frequencies.

Findings

The absence or low amplitude of considered mode shape frequencies is observed both before and after retrofitting of bridge indicates the deficient nodes. The kurtosis feature among all statistical approaches is able to reflect significant variation in the amplitude of different nodes of the bridge. The Stockwell transform showed better resolution of present modal frequencies but due to the yield of additional frequency peaks in the vicinity of the first three analytical modal frequencies no decisive conclusions are achieved. The methodology shows promising outcomes in eliminating noise and visualizing distinct modal frequencies of a steel truss bridge.

Social implications

The findings of the present study help in analyzing noisy vibration signals obtained from various structures (civil or mechanical) and determine vulnerable locations of the structure using mode shape frequencies.

Originality/value

The literature review gave an insight into few experimental investigations related to the combined application of Hilbert transform with spectral kurtosis and bandpass filtering technique in determining mode frequencies of a steel truss bridge.

Abstract

Purpose

To investigate wavelet modulus maxima distribution (MMD) in machinery condition monitoring and extract a parameter that can give a quantitative description of machinery‐operating status.

Design/methodology/approach

Signal decomposition technique is applied to extract gear motion signal and then wavelet transform modulus maxima are utilized to define fault growth parameter (FGP).

Findings

MMD were proposed and the distribution used to derive an EWMA statistic representing machinery fault growth. A comparison with other research works indicates better performance of this parameter.

Practical implications

This paper presents an innovative scheme for the machinery condition monitoring, on the basis of wavelet modulus maxima representation. The definition of MMD can be utilized to derive a parameter that describes the operating status of machinery. This parameter is load‐independent so that it demonstrates better performance when compared with other research works. Further, the MMD may be treated as input of condition classification system in the future work.

Originality/value

The idea for this paper stems from wavelet modulus maxima representation, whilst the application in vibration signal analysis is new. It was found that, by applying this approach, the occurrence of failure is correctly identified and the proposed EWMA FGP is independent of the load applied, which is a very important property in machinery condition monitoring and fault detection.
