Abstract

Purpose

Media images of unrealistic beauty have been identified as a determinant of women's body dissatisfaction. This experimental study aims to explore whether the negative impact of such images could be reduced by a one‐time educational intervention consisting of a presentation and discussion, teaching women to be critical of media images.

Design/methodology/approach

Female psychology students (n=176) from a university in the UK were randomly assigned to the control or intervention group and completed measures of body dissatisfaction after being challenged by images of the perfect female body. Follow up data were collected four weeks later.

Findings

The results suggested that the intervention had no immediate buffering effect on body dissatisfaction but participants in the intervention group showed a long‐term improvement for confidence, attractiveness and body‐parts dissatisfaction.

Practical implications

This one‐time intervention could be used to protect young women against the detrimental impact of media images in the longer term.

Originality/value

This study provides an evidence base for the use of an educational intervention for young people in schools and colleges.

Abstract

Purpose

Using the extended task‐technology fit (TTF) model, the purpose of this paper is to examine the impact of intranet usage on middle managers' performance in the port industry.

Design/methodology/approach

The study was conducted on 357 middle managers from various organisations in the Malaysian port industry.

Findings

The structural equation modelling results indicate that TTF and usage significantly explains the variance on managers' performance. TTF is a predictor of perceived usefulness and usage but it does not predict user resistance. Perceived usefulness is a predictor of usage but it does not predict user resistance. User resistance does not predict managers' performance.

Research limitations/implications

The study focuses only on the port industry in Malaysia and concentrates only on the management perspective of intranet usage.

Practical implications

The results provide insights on how the Malaysian port industry and other organisations of a similar structure could improve on their intranet adoption.

Originality/value

This study is perhaps one of the first to address the intranet adoption in the port industry using a comprehensive, extended TTF model (perceived usefulness, usage, user resistance) to investigate their influences on individual job performance.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present the surface roughness effects on mixed convection nanofluid flow with liquid hydrogen/liquid nitrogen diffusion.

Design/methodology/approach

The small parameter (α) is considered along with the frequency parameter n to study the surface roughness. The non-similar transformations are used to reduce the dimensional non-linear partial differential equations into dimensionless form, and then, the resulting equations are solved with the help of Newton’s Quasilinearization technique and the finite difference scheme.

Findings

The impacts of several dimensionless parameters such as Brownian diffusion parameter (Nb), thermophoresis parameter (Nt), small parameter (α), etc., are analyzed over various profiles as well as gradients. Also, the investigation is carried out for in presence and absence of nanoparticles. The influence of surface roughness is sinusoidal in nature and is more significant near the origin in case of skin-friction coefficient. The addition of nanoparticles enhances the skin-friction coefficient and reduces the Nusselt number, while its effects are not noticeable in case of mass transfer rates. The presence of suction/blowing, respectively, enhances/decreases the Sherwood number pertaining to the liquid hydrogen.

Practical implications

The results of the present analysis are expected to be useful for the design engineers of polymer industries in manufacturing good quality polymer sheets.

Originality/value

To the best of the author’s knowledge, no such investigation has been carried out in the literature.

Abstract

Purpose

This experimental study seeks to explore the impact of media images on women's body dissatisfaction and to assess whether this impact could be reduced by an educational intervention describing the power of air‐brushing.

Design/methodology/approach

The study involved a 2×2 factorial design with two conditions: picture (thin vs fatter) and air‐brushing intervention (present vs absent). A total of 200 women completed measures of body dissatisfaction before and after viewing the experimental information.

Findings

The results showed that women felt consistently more dissatisfied with their bodies after viewing thin pictures and more satisfied after viewing fatter pictures. In addition, the air‐brushing intervention reduced the detrimental effect of viewing the thinner pictures but had no effect on the benefits of viewing the fatter pictures.

Originality/value

Media images may have a role to play in body dissatisfaction in women. But a simple intervention focusing on air‐brushing can facilitate a more critical perspective and thus provide a buffer against the influence of media images.

Blackpool is a typical growth of the past fifty years or so, rising from the greater value placed upon the recreations of the people in recent decades. It has the name of the pleasure city of the north, a huge caravansary into which the large industrial cities empty themselves at the holiday seasons. But Blackpool is more than that; it is a town with a vibrating local life of its own; it has its intellectual side even if the casual visitor does not always see it as readily as he does the attractions of the front. A week can be spent profitably there even by the mere intellectualist.

Abstract

WE write on the eve of an Annual Meeting of the Library Association. We expect many interesting things from it, for although it is not the first meeting under the new constitution, it is the first in which all the sections will be actively engaged. From a membership of eight hundred in 1927 we are, in 1930, within measurable distance of a membership of three thousand; and, although we have not reached that figure by a few hundreds—and those few will be the most difficult to obtain quickly—this is a really memorable achievement. There are certain necessary results of the Association's expansion. In the former days it was possible for every member, if he desired, to attend all the meetings; today parallel meetings are necessary in order to represent all interests, and members must make a selection amongst the good things offered. Large meetings are not entirely desirable; discussion of any effective sort is impossible in them; and the speakers are usually those who always speak, and who possess more nerve than the rest of us. This does not mean that they are not worth a hearing. Nevertheless, seeing that at least 1,000 will be at Cambridge, small sectional meetings in which no one who has anything to say need be afraid of saying it, are an ideal to which we are forced by the growth of our numbers.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to examine the effects of variable thermal conductivity in mixed convection flow of viscoelastic nanofluid due to a stretching cylinder with heat source/sink.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors have computed the existence of the solution for Walter’s B and second grade fluids corresponding to Pr=0.5 and Pr=1.5. Skin-friction coefficient, local Nusselt and Sherwood numbers are computed numerically for different values of emerging parameters.

Findings

A comparative study with the existing solutions in a limiting sense is made and analyzed. The authors found that the dimensionless velocity filed and momentum boundary layer thickness are increased when the values of viscoelastic parameter increase. The present non-Newtonian fluid flow reduces to the viscous flow in the absence of viscoelastic parameter. The larger values of viscoelastic parameter corresponds to the higher values of local Nusselt and Sherwood numbers.

Originality/value

No such analysis exists in the literature yet.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper, is to study the MHD double-diffusive natural convection of a nanofluid over a linearly stretching sheet using the Buongiorno model.

Design/methodology/approach

The transport equations are transformed into coupled similarity equations. The numerical self-similar solutions are compared with the literature for the special case of pure fluid flow and found to be in good agreement. Graphical results are presented to illustrate the effects of various fluid flow, heat transfer and nano concentration parameters for both assisting and opposing flows.

Findings

It is found that the heat transfer rate increases as nanoparticles and salt are suspended in water. It is also found that dual solutions exist for the stretching parameter.

Originality/value

First paper on this model for stretching sheet.

Abstract

This paper examines ambush marketing activities and their effects upon UK football-oriented consumers. It questions previous definitions of ambush marketing and proposes one more relevant for today. The research focuses upon the identification of 'event-connected brand recognition' achieved by sponsor versus ambush brands and the role of 'event involvement' as a driver of this. The research employs a pre- and post-event design that aims to track consumer recognition of predesignated brands. Results give initial indications that consumers can discern differences between the two forms of activity and that high event involvement increases recognition. This paper contributes towards the debate about a change in the definition of ambush marketing against the backdrop of increasing media saturation surrounding major sporting events, and suggests that a more relevant descriptor would be 'parallel event marketing'.
