Abstract

Purpose

The prevalence of diabetes has increased manifold and now become a public health problem from being mild disorder. There is a need to discover more effective and safer antidiabetic agents by utilizing the rich heritage of medicinal plants. Tannins are polyphenols that are obtained from various parts of different plants belonging to multiple species and considered as potential drugs for the treatment of non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus. The paper aims to discuss these issues.

Design/methodology/approach

The study was conducted in three phases: incorporation of Babul powder in biscuits: assessment of Glycemic Index (GI): suitability of Babul powder on diabetic subjects statistical analysis: area under curve (AUC) for increase in blood glucose was calculated by trapezoidal rule and means were tested for significance by paired t-test. Mean glucose levels of all subjects were calculated for each time point. p<0.05 was considered statistically significant.

Findings

Tannins are polyphenols that are obtained from various parts of different plants belonging to multiple species. As an indigenous plant of Rajasthan, Babul contains high amount of tannin levels ranging from 18 to 27 percent in deseeded pods from ssp. indica, whereas ssp. nilotica reached up to 50 percent. Hence, Babul was selected as the source of tannin and subjected to diabetics for its suitability. The study concluded that Babul powder is effective in management of blood glucose levels even the simple sugars also and can be considered as suitable for diabetics. The active component for the purpose may be the presence of tannin in the Babul.

Research limitations/implications

The study was conducted on limited number of subjects. A confirmation study is suggested on the diabetic population.

Originality/value

The prevalence of diabetes is rapidly rising all over the globe at an alarming rate. Over few decades, the status of diabetes has changed from being considered as a mild disorder of the elderly to one of the major causes of morbidity and mortality affecting the youth and middle-aged people. Therefore, the present study focused on the development of tannin-based nutraceutical for incorporation in common foods and its health-promoting effect on diabetes.

Abstract

Purpose

Representative cultural heritage sites and monuments around the world have been lost or damaged by natural disasters, human conflicts and daily erosion and deterioration. Documentation and digital preservation by using three-dimensional (3D) modeling techniques enables to ensure the knowledge and access for future generations. Efficient working methods and techniques should be proposed for this purpose.

Design/methodology/approach

In this paper, a methodology for the generation of 3D photorealistic models of representative historical buildings is introduced, for using data are obtained using terrestrial laser scanning systems and photogrammetry.

Findings

In this paper, an approach to reconstruct 3D photorealistic models by using laser scanning and photogrammetric data is shown. Combination of data from both sources offers an improved solution for 3D reconstruction of historical buildings, sites and places. Integration of 3D models into virtual globes and/or software applications can ensure digital preservation and knowledge for next generations.

Research limitations/implications

Results obtained in a concrete building are shown. However, each building or studied area can show some other different drawbacks.

Practical implications

The study enables to generate 3D and four-dimensional models of most valuable buildings and contribute to the preservation and documentation of the cultural heritage.

Social implications

The study enables digital documentation and preservation of cultural heritage.

Originality/value

A proper solution at field (in a real and complicated case) is explained, in addition to the results, which are shown.

Abstract

Purpose

A GIS based environmental decision support system for municipal solid waste management under Indian socio‐economic and regulatory conditions, named as EDSS‐MSWI has been developed. This paper intends to report the methodology and application of the EDSS‐MSWI for municipal landfill site selection taking a case study of Varanasi city (India).

Design/methodology/approach

EDSS‐MSWI has been developed using VB.NET and ArcGIS Engine programming tools. A set of 13 criteria are selected for primary landfill site selection. Analytical hierarchy process (AHP) has been used to give weights to different criteria. The criteria were aggregated and suitability index (S) is generated using weighted linear combination (WLC) technique in GIS environment. The suitability index (0‐10) values are classified into four categories (Excluded, Less Preferable, Suitable and Best Suitable) to select the landfill site.

Findings

The results indicate that there are at least four locations under the “best suitable” category where adequate land seems available for landfilling in Varanasi. It is found that GIS based multi‐criteria decision analysis (MCDA) can be a powerful tool for such applications.

Research limitations/implications

The weights of different criteria have been based on the opinion of three experts only. This may involve subjectivity to that extent. Aggregation of more experts’ views may further refine the values of weights.

Practical implications

The developed tool provides a helpful guide to solid waste management planners.

Originality/value

The development of EDSS‐MSWI is the first of its kind in India to consider all aspects of municipal solid waste management in a holistic way and present it in an independent software form.

Abstract

Purpose

In this study, the authors assess the current state of lean product development and the lean production shop floor, along with the impact of the former on process quality and the latter on product quality and customer complaint reduction. The interplay between process and product quality and customer complaint reduction is assessed, along with their impacts on business performance.

Design/methodology/approach

Data were collected from 377 managers working at auto-component manufacturing firms in India. Confirmatory factor analysis was used for scale validation, and structural equation modelling was employed to test the research hypotheses.

Findings

The results of the statistical analyses reveal the positive influence of a lean production shop floor on process quality and lean product development on product quality and customer complaint reduction, and thereby on business performance.

Practical implications

The findings of this research provide insights into the interplay between lean and quality factors and their influence on customer complaint reduction and business performance. Practitioners can use the proposed model to strategically design unique products and improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the production shop floor, which can help enhance the product and process quality. This can reduce customer dissatisfaction and improve the business performance.

Originality/value

Few studies have simultaneously investigated the influence of lean product development and lean production shop floors in the Indian manufacturing context. To the best of our knowledge, this study is one of the first attempts to include customer complaint reduction as a construct in a lean model. It helps identify and prioritise the enablers of business performance and provides valuable insights for practitioners to strengthen lean implementation to attain a competitive edge.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to explore the interrelationships among human-related lean practices, lean production shop floors, process quality, inventory management, operational productivity and business productivity.

Design/methodology/approach

This study used a cross-sectional survey approach, and quantitative data were collected from 324 Indian auto-component manufacturing firms. Confirmatory factor analysis was used, followed by structural equation modelling techniques for the conceptual model, which incorporated a complete set of 11 hypotheses.

Findings

The results confirmed that human-related lean practices trigger lean production shop floors and improve process quality. Furthermore, the study revealed the positive impact of a lean production shop floor on process quality and inventory management and the positive impact of process quality on both operational and business productivity. Finally, inventory management is of the utmost importance in achieving better operational and business productivity, and operational productivity positively leads to business productivity.

Originality/value

The findings of this study can benefit auto-component manufacturing firms by elucidating the complex relationships between human-related lean practices, lean production shop floors, process quality, inventory management, operational productivity and business productivity. Better knowledge of these relationships will enable firms to enhance efficiency levels, reduce costs and resource wastage and improve their overall performance. This study provides a good understanding of the interplay between lean and quality factors and their influence on inventory management and business performance.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to learn how the incorporation and use of leanness, agility and innovation in Indian manufacturing micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) affect their bottom lines and how much these factors contribute to the MSMEs’ ability to meet their long-term sustainability goals.

Design/methodology/approach

The suggested model was subjected to data validation and additional empirical validation using a sample of 411 Indian manufacturing MSMEs. The analysis of construct measures is conducted through the utilization of confirmatory factor analysis, a statistical technique that is grounded in the theoretical framework of structural equation modeling (SEM). In addition, path model analysis was applied for the purpose to validate the assumptions that were included in the structural models.

Findings

Consistent with the proposed model, the findings of this study demonstrate that leanness, agility and innovation have a substantial favorable impact on the sustainability of a company’s performance. These findings may be helpful in gaining professionals, academics and policymakers to acknowledge the significance of leanness, agility and innovation in enhancing the long-term sustainability of MSMEs and enhancing the overall performance of a particular company. This research excluded the service industries-based research papers.

Research limitations/implications

Many research in the field of manufacturing industries that have adopted leanness, agility, innovativeness and sustainability as individual approaches or as a collective methodology of two or more were considered in the current study. This research excluded the service industries-based research papers.

Practical implications

This literature review has recognized and analyzed various dimensions and roles of leanness, agility, innovativeness and sustainability that are prevalent in manufacturing industries that include the positive and negative effects on the performance of the industries. The research enlightens the path and shows future directions for research to develop efficient, effective and sustainable manufacturing industries.

Social implications

By promoting the concept of focusing on the “human factor”, namely, stakeholder perspectives, the MSME sector is propagating a strategy that moves away from an excessive focus on technology and toward a more humane one. Through the application of the three key concepts of leanness, agility and innovation, this work aims to create a framework for measuring the sustainability performance of micro-, small- and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), with the ultimate goal of assisting the country in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals in the fields of industry, innovation and infrastructure by supporting environmentally friendly and resource-conserving businesses that give back to society and the natural environment.

Originality/value

The objective of this research is to assess the importance and effectiveness of integrating various approaches such as leanness, agility, innovativeness and sustainability within the framework of manufacturing micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). The authors hope that by going further into these concepts, they will be able to broaden their understanding and get a more comprehensive insight into the role that these concepts play and how they might be successfully used within this environment.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to empirically validate the moderating roles of organizational inertia and project duration in the new high‐tech product development process.

Design/methodology/approach

The study methodology involved two phases, viz. exploratory and descriptive. The exploratory phase, with the support of a focused literature survey, has resulted in a theoretical framework, which got later validated through the survey based empirical phase.

Findings

The study results suggest that organizational learning and absorptive capacity could trigger a firm's technology acquisition intent, which in turn could increase the firm's propensity to new product commercialization. Contrary to the authors' hypothesis, the study results did not support firm size as an antecedent to the firm's technology acquisition intent. Further, while the project duration is found to negatively moderate the technology acquisition intent to new product commercialization relationship, the study results did not support the moderating effect of organizational inertia on the same.

Practical implications

The study findings suggest that segmenting technology market based on firm size may not be an appropriate marketing strategy; instead organizational factors, viz. organizational learning and absorptive capacity, should be taken as the basis of high‐tech market segmentation. Further, the study has provided the much needed empirical support to the new high‐tech product development process by explaining the moderating effects of organizational inertia and project duration on the relationship between technology acquisition intent and new product commercialization.

Originality/value

The present study is one among those rare empirical investigations that explained the role of organizational variables in the new high‐tech product development process. In addition, the study provides the marketing practitioners the basis of segmentation for high technology markets.

Abstract

Purpose: This chapter investigates the moderating impact of personality and demographic factors on the association between work–life balance (WLB) and the well-being (WB) of Ayurveda doctors in Sri Lanka.

Need for the Study: WB is necessary for everyone’s life. Individuals must meet proper WLB between their private and career life scenarios. On the other hand, employee WB and WLB are considered under the sustainable development goals. Hence, it is required to investigate the effect of WLB on WB.

Methodology: This quantitative, cross-sectional study was conducted with minimal researcher interference. The primary data were collected using structured questionnaires from Ayurvedic Doctors in Sri Lanka. The correlation, regression, and hierarchical regression analyses with multivariate assumptions were conducted using SPSS.

Findings: The findings reveal a robust positive association between the WLB and WB, indicating the same association between the WLB and personality. Moreover, there is a strong positive association between personality and WB. The results of the moderator analysis presented that there is a marginal moderator impact from the personality towards the association between WLB and WB.

Practical Implications: Ayurveda Practitioners and policymakers can use the generated knowledge in decision-making. The results of this study can be used as a reference by all industrial practitioners to improve their business practices. They can do this by raising employee WLB to enhance WB, which will help them keep the best employees within the company.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper attempts to explore and identify the growing segments of online buyers of premium brands in the context of the post-pandemic market in India. The multi-dimensional trait of fashion orientation has been used as the psychographic construct for segmenting young urban consumers who shop on e-commerce platforms.

Design/methodology/approach

An online study across major cities resulted in a sample of 555 urban consumers of premium apparel and accessories brands. Hierarchical, two-step and k-means cluster analysis were conducted to identify diverse consumer segments and arrive at a demographic and usage-based profiling of the clusters. Furthermore, one-way analysis of variance was conducted to assess the key drivers for an online purchase among the obtained segments.

Findings

The pioneering use of fashion orientation as a base for segmentation helped identify three distinct clusters of socially conscious fashionistas, fashion involved and fashion indifferent buyers. The study identified significant differences in the demographic composition as well as their usage patterns and purchase motivations to shop online.

Originality/value

The study looks at an extremely important but neglected category of premium brands. The distinct clusters of premium brand buyers highlighted by the study adds theoretical value as well as managerial insights for the premium brand marketer as they seek to target consumers in Asian economies.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to explain the role of firm resources and environmental variables for pursuing new product commercialization in high‐tech markets.

Design/methodology/approach

The research design employed for the study consisted of both exploratory and descriptive phases. To begin with, a focused literature review was performed to develop a theoretical framework with seven research hypotheses, which was then empirically validated through a carefully executed survey conducted on the products managers of high tech firms.

Findings

The study results have supported six research hypotheses, viz. technology acquisition intent (TAI) to new product commercialization relationship, direct influence of dominant design, market heterogeneity, and network externalities on the firm's TAI relationship. The results of hierarchical regression analysis indicated that the “dominant design to TAI” and the “network externalities to TAI” relationships are significantly moderated by firm resources. However, the “market heterogeneity to TAI” relationship is found to be not moderated by firm resources.

Practical implications

Findings of the study have significant implications to extant product management theory and practice. The study highlights the most important environmental variables in high‐tech markets that act as antecedents to a firm's TAI and the effect of TAI on new product commercialization. Further, the study reveals the differential effects of these antecedent variables across firms owing to the varying levels of resource availability.

Originality/value

The paper reports the significant outcomes of an important study on product management that attempted to establish the linkages across environmental variables, firm resources, and firm's technology strategy in pursuing the new product commercialization.
