Abstract

Purpose

Research on service innovation management of online travel agencies (OTAs) remains relatively scarce. This study aims to illuminate the detailed components of managing service innovations at OTAs.

Design/methodology/approach

An in-depth case study is conducted at Trip, the largest OTA in China. A coherent framework of managing service innovations at OTAs is proposed through refining an existing framework from new service development (NSD), and concerning the success factors of service innovation. Based on theoretical synthesis and empirical analysis, the NSD framework is adapted, restructured and refined for service innovation management at OTAs.

Findings

The proposed framework contains three facets and associated managerial elements: (1) resources, including stakeholders, technologies and systems; (2) contexts, including innovation strategy, structure and culture; and (3) ideation, including idea generation and idea application. Different success factors are attached to the managerial elements. The facets, managerial elements and success factors serve as the components in the framework.

Research limitations/implications

This study provides academia with an analytical framework to understand and interpret service innovation management at OTAs, which can be used as a point of departure for future research.

Practical implications

The analytical framework inspires OTA managers to adopt a structured approach in service innovation management, and policymakers to design related interventions.

Originality/value

This study offers a first step toward the investigation of service innovation management at OTAs, specifically in China. The proposed framework is potentially applicable to other industries.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to identify different service innovation drivers, innovation process activities and to understand industrial services innovation management and coordination, as well as to develop a framework for industrial service innovation management and coordination.

Design/methodology/approach

The study involved collection of information and data from the literature and the Norwegian oil and gas (O&G) industry. A survey was conducted to get an overview of existing practices and guided interviews were conducted to confirm the findings of the survey.

Findings

The study indicates that the market needs are considered the most important innovation process driver, feedback from the customers is the most important activity to encourage service innovations, whilst return on investments is the most important decision‐making factor in evaluating innovation feasibility. Employees are the most important source of innovation ideas. Furthermore, interactions between different companies, as well as involvement of customer, employees and suppliers in the innovation process are becoming increasingly important.

Practical implications

The study shows that service providers and receivers often collaborate in the innovation processes, and that many of the activities are performed simultaneously. This results in the collaborative parties needing to put resources on managing and coordinating the innovation process in a structured, effective and efficient way. The proposed framework for service innovation management and coordination provides practitioners with a structured approach to manage industrial service innovations.

Research limitations/implications

The findings are based on the data collected from a number of companies from the O&G industry in Norway.

Originality/value

The paper identifies different innovation process drivers and activities and proposes a modified framework for industrial services innovation management and coordination based on the study analysis, interaction with the practitioners and using available literature on innovation management.

Abstract

Purpose

This article aims to explore the connections between tacit knowledge management and the capacity to create new products and services for stimulating organizational performance.

Design/methodology/approach

This research utilizes a questionnaire-based study and 378 questionnaires gathered from different provinces of China between August and October 2022. The SmartPLS technique was used to evaluate the regression and mediation analysis on lower-order and higher-order components of the research hypotheses behind the model.

Findings

This investigation's results indicate that the tacit knowledge management process (TKMP) significantly drives product and service innovation and impacts organizational performance (ORP). According to the results, TKMP did not directly influence ORP and product innovation to mediate between Tacit knowledge and organizational performance.

Research limitations/implications

Future research should concentrate on different combinations of influences on innovation and other consequences of introducing innovation into businesses. Moreover, researchers may add moderators to innovation and organizational performance.

Practical implications

This study assists managers in how tacit knowledge management affects organisational performance by examining product/service innovation capabilities. Product innovation also mediates between tacit knowledge and organizational performance. Service innovation improves organizational performance, prioritizing knowledge creation, sharing and retention to increase innovation and organizational success.

Originality/value

This study contributes to the literature on tacit knowledge management, innovation capability and organizational performance by concentrating on the tacit knowledge process and using the resource-based view. This study gives a solid theoretical and practical basis for understanding the component interactions.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to share the authors' experience gained while implementing a systematic knowledge‐centred support approach to providing both support and service innovation within an organization whose mission is the offering of instructional design, learning technologies integration, multimedia production, and faculty development to faculty members. As it proposes a knowledge‐centred support (KCS) framework for faculty support and service innovation, this paper aims to help other faculty support organizations to improve their current knowledge management and support practices.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper shares the authors' practical experience in implementing a knowledge‐centred support approach for both faculty support and service innovation. The paper uses the authors' experience to introduce the proposed framework.

Findings

This paper develops a KCS framework for faculty support and service innovation. Practical concerns and insights are provided to help other faculty support organizations adopt and implement the framework. It is hoped that this sharing of best practices can increase discussion about using knowledge management approaches to improve service quality and innovation among other faculty support organizations.

Research limitations/implications

Because the framework has been developed based on the authors' organizational environment, the framework may lack generalizability. However, other faculty support organizations are encouraged to revise or to adapt this framework to suit their specific organizations' cultures and goals.

Practical implications

Increasing service quality and innovation are major concerns for many faculty support organizations. Many faculty support organizations are exploring ways to provide a better service experience to faculty. This paper shares the authors' experience in this area and has the potential to inspire other faculty support organizations to examine, rethink, and improve their current practices, using a knowledge management perspective.

Originality/value

Few articles discuss how faculty support organizations can use knowledge management approaches to increase service quality and innovation. This paper identifies such a shortage in the literature and can be used as a starting point to motivate other faculty support organizations to share their knowledge management experience for improving service quality and innovation.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this article is to investigate whether management and employees in academic libraries involve users in library service innovations and what these user roles are.

Design/methodology/approach

The article first reviews the literature focusing on innovation, new product development, new service development and library science with specific focus on users and management. Subsequently the research uses a case study approach to investigate management and customer involvement in a Danish academic library.

Findings

Results from the case study show that academic libraries are making some attempts to draw on customers in service innovations and not only rely on management and employees. The main conclusion is that there are unexplored possibilities for customer involvement in library service innovations.

Research limitations/implications

One limitation relates to the difficulty of generalization of the findings to other Danish libraries and especially other national contexts. The other one relates to the preponderance of the literature from sources outside the field of library management and library science. Therefore, library managers might have to be cautious in using the results of this study.

Practical implications

The article has practical implications for library managers, employees, library science and innovation researchers alike.

Originality/value

The article is original because it generates new insights into management and especially customer involvement in academic library service innovations on the basis of an in‐depth case study of a Danish academic library.

Abstract

Purpose

Previous studies have shown that knowledge management (KM) plays a role in service innovation or that there is a positive relationship between them. However, this role or relationship is yet to be established quantitatively through empirical evidence within the context of university libraries in Nigeria. The purpose of this study is to determine how knowledge management affects innovative services in university libraries in Nigeria.

Design/methodology/approach

The study adopted a quantitative approach and used questionnaire to collect data from 250 librarians who participated in the study. A structural equation modeling approach was used to validate the research model.

Findings

It was found that KM affected service innovation positively. The three measures of KM cycle, namely, knowledge capture/creation, knowledge sharing/transfer and knowledge application/use were found to have positive and significant effect on service innovation in university libraries in Nigeria. In conclusion, university libraries in Nigeria with high activities in knowledge capture, knowledge sharing and knowledge use are more likely to provide innovative services to their users.

Practical implications

The study suggests that libraries with high level of activities in knowledge capturing, sharing and application are more likely to engage in innovative services. The study is also capable of encouraging students to take courses on KM and library and information science educators to place more emphasis on KM in their curricular.

Originality/value

The paper offers a unique empirical direction for service innovation in university libraries in Nigeria. As there is a dearth of quantitative empirical evidence in the area of service innovation in libraries, the empirical evidence obtained in this paper will not only contribute to the body of knowledge in this area but also be used to create an environment for innovative library services.

Abstract

Purpose

This study explores the influencing factors affecting smart supply chain innovation (SSCI) performance of commodity distribution enterprises, and proposes the corresponding framework from the perspective of the application of technology to improve the SSCI performance and make up the research gap in this field.

Design/methodology/approach

A multi-case study method is adopted in this study. Four distribution commodity distribution enterprises A, B, C and D in China are chosen as case enterprises. The interviews with senior management team members are used to collect data. The combination of open coding and axial coding are used to process the data. By testing the reliability and validity, the theoretical framework is summarized.

Findings

First, we find that the technology application cost inhibits SSCI and that the level of technology suitable for enterprise development will promote SSCI. Second, SSCI in structure, management and services can improve the performance and innovation ability of enterprises. Third, the quality of multi-channel integration and degree of customization around customer demand can significantly modify the above effects.

Originality/value

Compared with previous studies, this study reveals for the first time the correlation between the SSCI performance and technology application, SSCI in structure, management and service, providing new ideas for relevant researches on SSCI, and providing new theoretical support for managers' decision-making related to SSCI.

Purpose

The logistics industry has benefited hugely from the growth of e-commerce. The logistics and transportation industry operators have realized that higher-quality service and logistics management provides the competitive edge as the primary channel of communication with consumers. Digital voice assistants (DVA) is an information system based on an artificial intelligence framework that can interact through voice, such that a deliveryman can query for or use information in a relatively short time. The purpose of this paper is to explore the value of DVA in logistic service.

Design/methodology/approach

This study aims to develop a framework for innovation and logistics service capabilities of logistics and transportation services to structure a model based on the analysis hierarchy process method to discuss the factors considered when adopting DVA.

Findings

The results of this study implied that common problem and expectations of current operators in the delivery of goods and their expectations of DVA.

Practical implications

Innovative operations and planning are possible with information technology-enabled logistic services. It is important to identify relevant DVA development avenues.

Originality/value

The purpose of this study is to show which factors are significant to the logistics and transportation industry using DVA to aid the deliverymen, and it provides guidance for manager evaluating adopted DVA and its object.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to test a theoretical model of co-creation dynamics, service innovation and competitive advantage. The authors explore the dynamics of collaboration between travel agents and their suppliers in co-creating value for their customers. A research model is proposed to examine the relationship among six co-creation elements (co-creation dynamics), service innovation, competitive advantage and two antecedents: technology adoption and environmental change and the moderating effects of trust.

Design/methodology/approach

An empirical survey was performed based on travel agencies in Taiwan and Malaysia. A total of 105 valid responses from Taiwan and 102 valid responses from Malaysia were received. SPSS and partial least square were used to analyze the data.

Findings

A new six-element construct of co-creation dynamics was suggested. All the proposed effects were found significant in which trust enhanced the effect of elements of innovation for Taiwan travel agencies. However, in contrast to the proposed hypotheses, technology adoption had no direct effect, whereas trust had no moderating effect for Malaysia travel agencies.

Practical implications

This study suggests that managers should include co-creation approaches with partners and customers while developing new services. The identification of areas that may be lacking can allow managers to develop capabilities to improve business co-creation competency.

Originality/value

This study links the relational view with service-dominant logic that emphasizes business co-creation and service innovation as operant resources and a key fundamental source for competitive advantage. This study also looks at interpreting business co-creation and discusses whether business co-creation affects service innovation in the hospitality and tourism industry.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present a new conceptual framework for service organizations to achieve sustainable business performance through strategic quality orientation and innovation capabilities on the basis of relevant literature review and integration of various innovation and business sustainability theories and models. The study tests if the strategic quality orientation enhances innovation capabilities in terms of exploitation and explorative innovation, which, in turn, can lead to sustainable business growth. Mediating impact of innovation capabilities between strategic quality orientation and sustainable business growth relationship is also examined.

Design/methodology/approach

A conceptual framework was developed to test and establish these relationships. Results were analyzed based on 442 questionnaires collected from five different service industries of Pakistan, and the structural equation modeling technique was used to empirically test the conceptual framework.

Findings

The results indicate that strategic quality orientation directly affects innovation capabilities and sustainable business growth and also indirectly impacts sustainable business growth through its effect on innovation capabilities.

Practical implications

The study suggests service organizations can jointly implement quality and innovation using a structured approach, with strategic quality orientation as the foundation. In this way, they can leverage from their strategic quality management, supplier relationship, corporate quality culture, continual improvement and people management in order to ensure innovation and sustainability in their business growth.

Originality/value

The study integrates strategic quality orientation and innovation capabilities, and validates a new organizational framework through empirical examination which can be used by service organizations to ensure their sustainable business growth.
