Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to comparatively study the conventional, i.e. single magnet, and novel hybrid-magnet switched-flux permanent-magnet (HMSFPM) machines.

Design/methodology/approach

The HMSFPM machines utilize two magnet types, i.e. low-cost ferrites and NdFeB. Thus, a set of magnet ratios (?), defined as the quotient of the NdFeB volume to the total PM volume, is introduced. This allows any desired performance and cost trade-off to be designed. Series- and parallel-excited magnet configurations are investigated using 2-dimensional finite element analysis.

Findings

The torque of the HMSFPM machines is lower than the NdFeB SFPM machine but the flux-weakening performance is improved for similar machine efficiency. If the machine dimensions are unconstrained, the HMSFPM machines can have the same torque for reduced material costs and a moderate increase in machine dimensions. Ferrite SFPM machines have the lowest cost for the same torque but a significant increase in machine dimensions is required. Finally, the series-excited HMSFPM machine is the preferred over the parallel-excited HMSFPM machine because it has superior demagnetization withstand capability.

Research limitations/implications

Mechanical and winding eddy current losses are not considered in the efficiency map calculations.

Originality/value

The NdFeB SFPM, ferrite SFPM, series-excited HMSFPM, and the parallel-excited HMSFPM machines are compared for their electromagnetic performance, flux-weakening, PM demagnetization, efficiency, and material costs.

Abstract

This study involves the development of a PSPICE 5.4 package oriented model for the dynamic behaviour of a series excited synchronised slip ring induction motor including the bridge rectifier for rotor circuit excitation. Furthermore, in this study is aimed at investigating the synchronising behaviour for various rotor connections of a series excited synchronous motor formed by connecting a bridge rectifier input in series with the stator winding of a slip‐ring induction motor whereas the rectifier output feeds the rotor winding. The steady state behaviour of such a scheme in comparison to a separately excited one is well known, but the behaviour during synchronisation requires further study. Presentation of results obtained by a PSPICE based simulation and comparison with experimental results acquired during this study points to a model to account for design variations and additional circuitry. It is convenient to use this model in a drive system. The advantage of this simulation method over the others is that it does not involve the utilisation of specialised programs and mathematical difficulties such as the solution of stiff differential equations. Furthermore, steady state behaviour of the scheme is explained by means of a simple analysis and illustrated by test results.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to propose a new topology of direct current (DC) machine using claw-pole stator to replace standard DC starter in micro-hybrid vehicles. The main interest of such a topology is the reduction of copper volume.

Design/methodology/approach

The design of the claw-pole machine is based on a multi-objective optimization of several topologies, based on a three-dimensional (3D) reluctance network modeling. The 3D finite element (FE) model is used to check the results of the optimization, and a prototype is manufactured and tested with satisfactory results.

Findings

The claw-pole topology with wave-shape windings allows to replace the current DC series classical starter because of to its copper volume saving.

Research limitations/implications

This model is only limited to the optimization of the claw-pole stator for a fixed geometry of the rotor.

Practical implications

The research outcome shows that claw-pole machine can replace the series-excited DC machines of starters and at the same time achieve the same performance at reduced copper volume.

Originality/value

The paper deals with a new DC machine topology to reduce the copper volume through the suppression of the classical stator end-windings. The use of Claw-Pole inductors ensures this copper reduction.

Abstract

IN AIRCRAFT TESTING, it has been difficult to accurately determine small differential temperatures in mediums such as engine oils and aircraft fuels which may vary in temperature over several hundred degrees. A method of measuring this temperature with an electronic circuit utilising platinum probes is presented which is capable of measuring temperature differentials as low as 2.5°C. This method utilises two platinum element probes connected in series driven by a constant current generator. An electronic circuit holds the mid‐point of the probes at virtual ground minimising common mode voltages across the probes. A differential amplifier provides an output proportional to the differential temperature. The mis‐matching and non‐linearity of the platinum sensors is compensated. Voltage sensed across one probe provides an output proportional to the temperature of the medium.

Indeed, academic researchers, educators and their students, as well as practitioners, policymakers and support personnel all play valuable roles in the wider entrepreneurship debate. Since the seminal works by Granger and Joyeux (1980) and Hosking (1981), estimations of long-memory time series models have been receiving considerable attention and a number of parameter estimation procedures have been proposed. This paper gives an overview of this plethora of methodologies with special focus on likelihood-based techniques. Broadly speaking, likelihood-based techniques can be classified into the following categories: the exact maximum likelihood (ML) estimation (Sowell, 1992; Dahlhaus, 1989), ML estimates based on autoregressive approximations (Granger & Joyeux, 1980; Li & McLeod, 1986), Whittle estimates (Fox & Taqqu, 1986; Giraitis & Surgailis, 1990), Whittle estimates with autoregressive truncation (Beran, 1994a), approximate estimates based on the Durbin–Levinson algorithm (Haslett & Raftery, 1989), state-space-based maximum likelihood estimates for ARFIMA models (Chan & Palma, 1998), and estimation of stochastic volatility models (Ghysels, Harvey, & Renault, 1996; Breidt, Crato, & de Lima, 1998; Chan & Petris, 2000) among others. Given the diversified applications of these techniques in different areas, this review aims at providing a succinct survey of these methodologies as well as an overview of important related problems such as the ML estimation with missing data (Palma & Chan, 1997), influence of subsets of observations on estimates and the estimation of seasonal long-memory models (Palma & Chan, 2005). Performances and asymptotic properties of these techniques are compared and examined. Inter-connections and finite sample performances among these procedures are studied. Finally, applications to financial time series of these methodologies are discussed.
