Abstract

In mobile ad hoc networks, many routing protocols use broadcast mechanism to find route whereas one of the wireless network challenges is the bandwidth optimisation. This mechanism increases the control overhead and consumes bandwidth and energy. The overhead penalty increases with the density and the network size. Thus is important to reduce the number of participants in that mechanism. One of the used solutions consists of determining clusterheads nodes. In this paper, we propose an algorithm for choosing clusterheads (SRCAC). Each node in the network broadcasts its ID, status and election index. The election index is a combination of potentiality index and stability index. The potentiality index is a linear combination of the mobile resources like processor speed, RAM and ROM memories. The stability index shows the cluster life time. Then, we use SRCAC to build clusters. We suggest a backup clusterhead which could become the principal clusterhead when the first breaks down. To improve the reliability of interclusters communications, we build a mesh between gateway and distributed gateway. Moreover, we introduce Quality of Service (QoS) constraints in the ODMRP (On Demand Multicast Routing Protocol) mobility prediction version.We compare our algorithm with the WCA (Weighted Clustering Algorithm for Mobile Ad hoc Networks) algorithm in terms of clusterheads. The results show that our algorithm performs better than the WCA and, finally, the deterioration of the performances imposed by the constraints on this ODMRP version is unimportant.

Abstract

Purpose

Internet of things (IoT) promises advantages in different sectors, especially the health-care sector. Due to its capabilities for chronic disease management, IoT has attracted the attention of researchers. Nowadays, there is research that focuses on the use of IoT for chronic disease management. However, the use of IoT in various contexts faces different barriers. This paper aims to explore Iranian experts’ conceptions of the barriers to using IoT in Iran regarding its application for chronic disease management.

Design/methodology/approach

This study follows a phenomenographic method to investigate Iranian experts’ conceptions of the barriers to using IoT in Iran regarding its application for chronic disease management.

Findings

The results show that there are four categories of description (governance, technical, economic and social barriers) that vary among experts’ conceptions.

Originality/value

The findings of the present work could provide valuable insights for managers and policymakers who want to address IoT barriers.

Abstract

Purpose

The internal (farmer-controlled) and external (non-farmer-controlled) factors affect crop yield. However, not a single study has identified and analyzed yield predictors in India using effective predictive models. Thus, this study aims to investigate how internal and external predictors impact pearl millet yield and Stover yield.

Design/methodology/approach

Descriptive analytics and artificial neural network are used to investigate the impact of predictors on pearl millet yield and Stover yield. From descriptive analytics, 473 valid responses were collected from semi-arid zone, and the predictors were categorized into internal and external factors. Multi-layer perceptron-neural network (MLP-NN) model was used in Statistical Package for the Social Sciences version 25 to model them.

Findings

The MLP-NN model reveals that rainfall has the highest normalized importance, followed by irrigation frequency, crop rotation frequency, fertilizers type and temperature. The model has an acceptable goodness of fit because the training and testing methods have average root mean square errors of 0.25 and 0.28, respectively. Also, the model has R2 values of 0.863 and 0.704, respectively, for both pearl millet and Stover yield.

Research limitations/implications

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, the current study is first of its kind related to impact of predictors of both internal and external factors on pearl millet yield and Stover yield.

Originality/value

The literature reveals that most studies have estimated crop yield using limited parameters and forecasting approaches. However, this research will examine the impact of various predictors such as internal and external of both yields. The outcomes of the study will help policymakers in developing strategies for stakeholders. The current work will improve pearl millet yield literature.

Abstract

Internet of Things (IoT) and artificial intelligence are two leading technologies that bought revolution to each and every field of humans using in daily life by making everything smarter than ever. IoT leads to a network of things which creates a self-configuring network. Improving farm productivity is essential to meet the rapidly growing demand for food. In this chapter, the authors have introduced a smart greenhouse by integration of two leading technologies in the market (i.e., Machine Learning and IoT). In proposed model, several sensors are used for data collection and managing the environment of greenhouse. The idea is to propose an IoT and Machine Learning based smart nursery that helps in healthy growing and monitoring of the seed. The structure will be a dome-like structure for observation and isolation of an egg with various sensors like pressure, humidity, temperature, light, moisture, conductivity, air quality, etc. to monitor the nursery internal environment and maintain the control and flow of water and other minerals inside the nursery. The nursery will have a solar panel from which it stores the electricity generated from the sun, a small fan to control the flow of air and pressure. A camera will also be equipped inside the nursery that will use computer vision technology to monitor the health of the plant and will be trained on the past data to notify the user if the plant is diseased or need attention.

Abstract

Purpose

The rise of new information and communication technologies forms the cornerstone for the future development of work. The term Industry 4.0 refers to the vision of a fourth industrial revolution that is based on a network of autonomous, self-controlling, self-configuring, knowledge-based, sensor-based and spatially distributed production resources. All in all, different forms of the application of the Industry 4.0 concept can be observed, ranging from autonomous logistic transport systems drawn upon the idea of swarm intelligence to smart knowledge management systems. This paper aims to develop a theoretical framework to analyze different applications of Industry 4.0 on an organizing continuum. The general research questions are: What forms of organizing digitalized work lead to the reproduction of routines, and what forms foster innovation within Industry 4.0? The authors thus analyze the consequences of different forms of organizing work on workers’ perceptions and the results of the working process.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper provides case studies for different stages of the organizing continuum in the context of Industry 4.0. The cases and a further analysis of all 295 funded projects are based on the Platform Industry 4.0 Map, which is part of the Industry 4.0 initiative of the German Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Energy and the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research. The consequences for people acting in such organizational and digitally supported structures are discussed.

Findings

A variety of applications of Industry 4.0 can be found. These applications mainly vary in the dimensions of the degree of formalization, the location of control authority, the location of knowledge and the degree of professionalization. At the right side of the organizing continuum, the digitalization organizes a work environment that supports highly qualified humans. They have broad leeway and a high degree of autonomy to design and create innovative forms of digitalization for tomorrow. At the left side of the organizing continuum, Industry 4.0 structures a work environment with narrow leeway, a low degree of autonomy and a top-down structure of control authority predetermined by digital applications. In this case, employees fill the gaps the machines cannot handle.

Research limitations/implications

As the paper focuses on Industry 4.0 developments in Germany, the comparability with regard to other countries is limited. Moreover, the methodological approach is explorative, and broader quantitative verification is required. Specifically, future research could include quantitative methods to investigate the employees’ perspective on Industry 4.0. A comparison of Industry 4.0 applications in different countries would be another interesting option for further research.

Practical implications

This paper shows that applications of Industry 4.0 are currently at a very early stage of development and momentarily organize more routines than innovations. From a practical point of view, professional vocational and academic training will be a key factor for the successful implementation of digitalization in future. A joint venture of industry and educational institutions could be a suitable way to meet the growing demand for qualified employees from the middle to the right-hand of the organizing continuum in the context of Industry 4.0.

Social implications

Industry 4.0 is designed by men, and therefore, humans are responsible for whether the future work situation will be perceived as supportive or as an alienated routine. Therefore, designers of Industry 4.0, as well as politicians and scientists, absolutely must take the underlying outcomes of digitalized work into account and must jointly find socially acceptable solutions.

Originality/value

This paper provides a promising avenue for future research on Industry 4.0 by analyzing the underlying organizational structures of digital systems and their consequences for employees. Moreover, the paper shows how Industry 4.0 should be organized to simply reproduce routines or to support innovation.

Programming Sensor Networks currently is a subtle task not because of enormous amount of code but due to inherent limitations of embedded hardware like the power, memory, network bandwidth and clock speed. In addition, there are very few programming abstractions and standards available which lead to close coupling between the application code and the embedded OS requiring understanding of low‐level primitives during implementation. A Middleware can provide glue code between the applications and the heterogeneity of devices by providing optimized set of services for autonomously managing the resources and functionality of wireless nodes in a distributed wireless sensor network. This paper presents an autonomous middleware framework for low power distributed wireless sensor networks that support adaptive sensor functionality, context aware communications, clustering, quality of service and faulttolerance. Finally an application on how to use the autonomous middleware is illustrated on the Envelope System Research Apparatus (ESRA).

Abstract

Purpose

Home networks enable, potentially, an increased level of integration among appliances present in the house, enabling an ubiquitous control of devices and simplifying man/machine interactions. This paper aims to present the home network interoperability (HoNeY) platform.

Design/methodology/approach

Home networks and their challenges are analyzed, then the technology that constitutes the base for the present implementation is briefly revised. The HoNeY platform is presented, in terms of its architecture, implementation, and constraints.

Findings

The HoNeY platform is an multimedia home platform (MHP)‐based, low‐complex, cost‐effective architecture for automatic discovery, configuration, and dynamic access to distributed services in home environments.

Originality/value

This paper describes HoNeY, a mechanism of service discovery and code mobility designed for interoperability of devices connected to home networks, compatible with the MHP standard.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to apply security policies over the mobile ad hoc networks. A mobile ad hoc network refers to infrastructure-less, persistently self-designing systems; likewise, there is a noteworthy innovation that supplies virtual equipment and programming assets according to the requirement of mobile ad hoc network.

Design/methodology/approach

It faces different execution and effectiveness-based difficulties. The major challenge is the compromise of performance because of unavailable resources with respect to the MANET. In order to increase the MANET environment’s performance, various techniques are employed for routing and security purpose. An efficient security module requires a quality-of-service (QoS)-based security policy. It performs the task of routing and of the mobile nodes, and it also reduces the routing cost by finding the most trusted node.

Findings

The experimental results specify that QoS-based security policy effectively minimizes the cost, response time as well as the mobile makespan (routing cost and response time) of an application with respect to other existing approaches.

Research limitations/implications

In this paper, the authors proposed an enhancement of Cross Centric Intrusion Detection System named as PIHNSPRA Routing Algorithm (PIHNSPRA).

Practical implications

It maps the security with the secure IDS communication and distributes the packets among different destinations, based on priority. This calculation is proposed for the purpose of routing and security by considering greatest throughput with least routing cost and reaction time.

Social implications

When the concept is applied to practical applications. Quality of Service introduced in the proposed research reduces the cost of routing and improves the throughput.

Originality/value

The proposed calculation is tested by NS2 simulator and the outcomes showed that the execution of the calculation is superior to other conventional algorithms.

Abstract

Purpose

In the last decade, bureaucratic organizational hierarchies have been increasingly replaced with flatter organizational forms, bringing together people from different disciplines to form project teams within and between organizations. Distributed project teams often are self‐configuring networks of mobile and “fixed” people, devices, and applications. They are the natural next step in the evolution of distributed computing, after client‐server, web‐based, and peer‐to‐peer computing. Seeks to show that a newly emerging requirement is to facilitate not just mobility of content (i.e. to support a multitude of devices and connectivity modes) to project members, but also mobility of context (i.e. to provide traceable and continuous support of dynamic relationships between people, artifacts, and business processes).

Design/methodology/approach

The contribution of this paper is to present the design goals, the architecture, and implementation of a system aiming at supporting internet‐enabled workflow and groupware for project teams, enabling traceable and continuous support of associations (relationships) between people, artifacts, and business processes.

Findings

The findings indicate that building internet‐enabled workflow and groupware systems is valuable for virtual teamwork, since they provide a foundation for context‐aware and process‐aware information systems.

Originality/value

This article outlines some foundations of process‐aware collaborative work. Provides an analysis of current workflow and groupware shortcomings in respect of virtual teamwork, outlines the design goals, architecture and an implementation of a system aiming at supporting virtual teams on the internet.
