Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to identify and analyze the influence that globalization has had on the development of the contemporary Japanese art production. The study also aims to expand the global narrative of Japanese art by introducing concepts behind festivals for revitalization that have been occurring in Japan in recent years.
Design/methodology/approach
Guided by Culture Theorist Nira Yuval-Davies’ approach to the politics of belonging, the paper is situated within cultural studies and considers the development of contemporary art in Japan in relation to the power structures present within the global art market. This analysis draws heavily from the research of art historians Reiko Tomii, Adrian Favell, and Gennifer Weisenfeld, and is complemented by investigative research into the life of Art Director Kitagawa Fram, as well as observational analyses formed by on-site study of the Setouchi Triennale in 2015 and 2016.
Findings
The paper provides historical insight to the ways that the politics of belonging to the western world has created a limited benchmark for critical discussion about contemporary Japanese art. It suggests that festivals for revitalization in Japan not only are a good source of diversification, but also evidences criticism therein.
Research limitations/implications
Due to the brevity of this text, readers are encouraged to further investigate the source material for more in-depth understanding of the topics.
Practical implications
The paper implies that art historiography should take a multilateral approach to avoid a western hegemony in the field.
Originality/value
This paper fulfills a need to reflect on the limited global reception to Japanese art, while also identifying one movement that art historians and theorists may take into account in the future when considering a Japanese art discourse.

Abstract
During the past decade, the market for consumer and industrial goods in South‐East Asia has grown at a rapid rate and industrial countries in this region have been trying to advance their national plans to stimulate economic take‐off. However, in the middle of 1997, the ASEAN bubble economy started to collapse after devaluation of the baht. In this paper the current status and future direction of Japanese manufacturers in Thailand are discussed through facts investigations and a survey execution. The results from this investigation indicate that the Japanese offshore manufacturers in Thailand are at an earlier stage than their domestic counterparts in Japan, in terms of manufacturing strategies and action programmes. Therefore, offshore manufacturers are in a much more severe situation than domestic firms, although one of their major reasons for joining the Thai manufacturing industry was to recover from the ending of Japan’s own bubble economy.

Abstract
This analysis of the Japanese textile sector illustrates how intra-industry cleavages are becoming an integral feature of Japanese trade policymaking. In the past, a pattern of cross-sectoral variation in trade policy could be observed, as the government protected declining industries at home and sought to open foreign markets for the competitive export sector. The internationalization of Japanese firms, however, has radically affected the articulation of corporate trade policy preferences. There is an ongoing breakdown in solidarity among industry members based on their degree of multinationality and/or their reverse importing strategies. These clashes put contradictory pressures on the Japanese government, making it more difficult to predict the course of trade liberalization in Japan.

Abstract
Purpose
This commentary and conceptual paper is aimed at investigating marketing perceptions of the country-of-origin (COO) perspectives, and emphasis is placed on the “Cool Japan” concept.
Design/methodology/approach
A review of research on COO and the concept of “Cool Japan” was conducted, including commentary of previous relevant theoretical frameworks.
Findings
The evidence has shown that the brand images of various COOs is dependent on their cultural exports. In the case of Japan, the “Cool Japan” initiative, which initiated the creation and dissemination of Japanese cultural contents such as anime, games and art, has led to tremendous and sustainable economic growth in Japan till date.
Research limitations/implications
As previous studies on COO are wide-ranging, they are not exhaustively presented in this paper. However, the importance of considering not only animosity, which has traditionally been taken into account, but also the coolness aspect is suggested.
Practical implications
This paper shows that “coolness” is an important concept when nations or regions consider their branding strategies and an integrated approach is needed.
Originality/value
This paper extends previous COO research and adds coolness to the traditional animosity. It also considers these in comparison across countries and goes as far as the need to propose a new scale. Conceptual findings from this paper would therefore provide future directions for advancing COO research Cool Japan.

Over 30 years, many comparative surveys have found Japanese employees and managers far less satisfied with their jobs than their Western counterparts. This paper explores the findings and interpretations from these studies, and then proposes an alternative explanation based on childhood socialization practices and the history of Japanese society. This explanation is then used to illuminate the recent social problems of karoshi (death from overwork) and ijime (bullying) in the Japanese workplaces.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to develop bansho analysis as a research method to improve observation and analysis of instruction in lesson study, which could potentially visualise pupils’ thinking processes in a lesson.
Design/methodology/approach
The paper opted for a qualitative method of case study analysis. Data are drawn from a Year 6 Japanese Language lesson of a Japanese primary school. Data collection and data analysis are informed by transcript-based lesson analysis. The process of bansho formation is also reproduced based on video and audio data.
Findings
Bansho analysis illustrates three main patterns of pupils’ thinking processes, namely, variation of ideas, connection of ideas and attention to ideas. Pupils’ opinion sharing at the beginning of the lesson led to a variety of ideas and they were recorded as part of bansho. There, pupils proceeded to establish connection among ideas. Finally, pupils displayed attention to ideas which were recorded on bansho, by returning to ideas that intrigued them.
Research limitations/implications
There is a need to investigate the teacher’s role in bansho formation processes in order to develop a more comprehensive bansho analysis method. Other teaching and learning materials such as lesson plans and pupils’ notes should also be included in the study of bansho to develop a more comprehensive bansho analysis.
Originality/value
Bansho analysis proposed in this paper allows educators and researchers to study bansho with visualisation of bansho-related data. It would serve as an invaluable source of evidence during the observation and reflection stage of lesson study cycle.

Purpose
This paper aims to provide an overview of the origins of bansho, how it has developed to be an indispensable practice in Japan and its influence on countries outside Japan. The integration of bansho into lesson study (LS) will also be presented.
Design/methodology/approach
This paper draws on the vast literature on bansho from both in and outside Japan to illustrate the points mentioned above.
Findings
Recapitulation on the history of chalkboard and bansho in different eras in Japan illustrated its endurance towards the test of time, geographical space and functions. While bansho remains a constant presence in LS research, there has not been any work that outlines how bansho is integrated into the LS cycle. Thus, a guideline on how bansho can be incorporated in the LS cycle is provided.
Originality/value
A comprehensive overview of bansho allows educators and researchers outside Japan to move beyond the know-how and know-what of bansho; it would serve as an invaluable source to understand the core concepts underlying this classroom practice, thus avoiding the mere adaptation of bansho superficial aspects. This study also provides precise instruction on how bansho can be integrated into each step of the LS cycle, which will guide teachers and researchers in the future implementation of LS.
