Abstract

Considers the concerns of engineers designing overcurrent protection and measuring systems. Looks at the use of software to determine the instrument security fader with higher accuracy than with traditional calculation methods. An application of a space‐and‐time analysis makes it possible to calculate the peak value of the secondary voltage.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to determine the steady state of an electromagnetic structure using the finite element method (FEM) without calculation of the transient state. The proposed method permits to reduce the computation time if the transient state is important.

Design/methodology/approach

In the case of coupling magnetic and electric circuit equations to obtain the steady state with periodic conditions, an approach can be to discretise the time with periodic conditions and to solve the equation system. Unfortunately, the computation time can be prohibitive. In this paper, the authors proposed to use the waveform relaxation method associated with the Newton method to accelerate the convergence.

Findings

The obtained results show that the proposed approach is efficient if the transient state is important. On the contrary, if the transient state is very low, it is preferable to use the classical approach, namely, the time-stepping FEM.

Research limitations/implications

The main limitation of the proposed approach is the necessity to evaluate or to know the time constant and consequently the duration of the transient state. Moreover the method requires some important memory resources.

Practical/implications

In the context of the use of the time-stepping FEM, one of the problems is the computation time which can be important to obtain the steady state. The proposed method permits avoidance of this difficulty and directly gives the steady state.

Social/implications

The proposed approach will permit to model and study the electromagnetic systems in the steady state, and particularly the transformers. Because of the gain in computing time, the use of optimisation techniques will be facilitated.

Originality/value

The novelty of this study is the proposal of the waveform relaxation–Newton method to directly obtain the steady state when applied to the three-phase transformer.

Abstract

Purpose

As a crucial institutional form established since the Chinese economic reform, the system of competitive local governments has been shaping the characteristics of China's socialist market economy to a considerable degree.

Design/methodology/approach

This study not only adopts the view of existing studies that attribute the economic motive of local governments to rent and consider land public finance as a means through which local governments carry out strategic investment but also attempts to further develop the view within a Marxist analytical framework.

Findings

As a result, the local governments have helped to maintain an incredibly high investment rate over a considerable period of time, facilitating the continuous, rapid growth of the Chinese economy.

Originality/value

This study concludes that China's local governments function as the productive allocator and user of rent in the strategic investment based on land public finance and thereby embed themselves in the relative surplus-value production initially arising from competition amongst enterprises, forming the dual structure of relative surplus-value production unique to China's economy.

The purpose of this paper is to suggest a procedure which makes it possible to reduce the radial vibrations of doubly salient switched reluctance motors (SRMs).

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to suggest a procedure which makes it possible to reduce the radial vibrations of doubly salient switched reluctance motors (SRMs).

Design/methodology/approach

An analytical method for the SRM radial vibration determination is first described. It is then extended to the active vibration reduction. An auxiliary winding equips the stator. The paper explains how the corresponding currents have to be adjusted to achieve a simple and robust control, with a special emphasis about the compatibility of the main and auxiliary supplies and about the reduction control principle. At last, an example of drastic noise reduction is presented.

Findings

The proposed method makes possible to define the theoretical vibration spectrum of SRM and thus it gives the major components to be reduced. The feasibility of automating the principle of active reduction is shown. The process of active reduction shows that a vibration component can be diminished by over 90 percent.

Research limitations/implications

The active reduction is applied for reducing one component of the vibration spectrum. Future developments will focus on the simultaneous reduction of several components of vibration spectrum.

Originality/value

The method offers an automated process to reduce considerably the component of highest amplitude in the vibration spectrum.

Abstract

Purpose

To show how Bateson's difference which makes a difference can be interpreted from a cybernetic view, i.e. in terms of control theory.

Design/methodology/approach

Depending on the observer's choice of the system boundaries, communication or structural coupling may be recognized. With the help of Bateson's example he uses to explain his term of information the paper demonstrates how the two perspectives can be related to each other and in which way his metalogical “hypothesis non fingo” reflects this refraction of perspectives.

Findings

Hypotheses describing structural coupling in the perspective of communication become explanations which then in circularity are verified by structural coupling. In his example Bateson describes a structural coupling between a dog owner and his dog in order to explain how he informs dogs.

Originality/value

Provides information on Bateson's theory of explaining

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to provide a new computational method based on the polynomial chaos (PC) expansion to identify the uncertain parameters of load sensing proportional valve (LSPV), which is commonly used to improve the efficiency of brake system in heavy truck.

Design/methodology/approach

For this investigation, the mathematic model of LSPV is constructed in the form of state space equation. Then the estimation process is implemented relying on the experimental measurements. With the coefficients of the PC expansion obtained by the numerical implementation, the output observation function can be transformed into a linear and time-invariant form. The uncertain parameter recursively update functions based on Newton method can therefore be derived fit for computer calculation. To improve the estimation accuracy and stability, the Newton method is modified by employing the acceptance probability to escape from the local minima during the estimation process.

Findings

The accuracy and effectiveness of the proposed parameter estimation method are confirmed by model validation compared with other estimation methods. Meanwhile, the influence of measurement noise on the robustness of the estimation methods is taken into consideration, and it is shown that the estimation approach developed in this paper could achieve impressive stability without compromising the convergence speed and accuracy too much.

Originality/value

The model of LSPV is originally developed in this paper, and then the authors propose a novel effective strategy for recursively estimating uncertain parameters of complicate pneumatic system based on the PC theory.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to describe a technique for modeling transformer internal faults using transmission line modeling (TLM) method. In this technique, a model for simulating a two winding single phase transformer is modified to be suitable for simulating an internal fault in both windings.

Design/methodology/approach

TLM technique is mainly used for modeling transformer internal faults. This was first developed in early 1970s for modeling two‐dimensional field problems. Since, then, it has been extended to cover three dimensional problems and circuit simulations. This technique helps to solve integro‐differential equations of the analyzed circuit. TLM simulations of a single phase transformer are compared to a custom built transformer in laboratory environment.

Findings

It has been concluded from the real time studies that if an internal fault occurs on the primary or secondary winding, the primary current will increase a bit and secondary current does not change much. However, a very big circulating current flows in the shorted turns. This phenomenon requires a detailed modeling aspect in TLM simulations. Therefore, a detailed inductance calculation including leakages is included in the simulations. This is a very important point in testing and evaluating protective relays. Since, the remnant flux in the transformer core is unknown at the beginning of the TLM simulation, all TLM initial conditions are accepted as zero.

Research limitations/implications

The modeling technique presented in this paper is based on a low frequency (up to a few kHz) model of the custom‐built transformer. A detailed capacitance model must be added to obtain a high‐frequency model of the transformer. A detailed arc model, aging problem of the windings will be applied to model with TLM + finite element method.

Originality/value

Using TLM technique for dynamical modeling of transformer internal faults is the main contribution. This is an extended version of an earlier referenced paper of the authors and includes inductance calculation, leakages calculation, and BH curve simulation while the referenced paper only includes piecewise linear inductance values. This modeling approach may help power engineers and power system experts understand the behavior of the transformer under internal faults.
