Abstract

Decreased regulation of part-time work is one way a country responds to high rates of unemployment. Proponents of deregulation argue that a more flexible labor market is required to allow labor markets to clear. A more traditional response to high unemployment is change in monetary policy, where interest rates are lowered to stimulate the economy and increase rates of employment. Both policies have been tried in Europe, a good place to study the effects of the two policy responses, both because European unemployment has been high and because the trade off between monetary policy and the deregulation of part time work has varied from country to country. The establishment of the European monetary union (EMU) in 1999 created a natural experiment in which any one country’s ability to adjust its monetary policy was curtailed, creating pressure for deregulatory policies to come into play (Aaronovitch & Grahl, 1997; Pisani-Ferry, 1998).

Abstract

Purpose – Ascertaining the extent to which the generalized decline in union density, as well as the erosion in centralized bargaining structures and developments in other labor institutions, have contributed to rising within-country inequality.

Methodology – Econometric analysis of a newly developed dataset combining information on industrial relations and labor law, various dimensions of globalization, and controls for demand and supply of skilled labor for 51 Advanced, Central and Eastern European, Latin American, and Asian countries from the late 1980s to the early 2000s, followed by an analysis of 16 advanced countries over a longer time frame (from the late 1970s to the early 2000s).

Findings – In contrast to previous research, which finds labor institutions to be important determinants of more egalitarian wage or income distributions, the chapter finds that trade unionism and collective bargaining are no longer significantly associated with within-country inequality, except in the Central and Eastern European countries. These findings are interpreted as the result of trade unionism operating under more stringent structural constraints than in the past, partly as a result of globalization trends. In addition, despite much talk about welfare state crisis, welfare states, historically the result of labor's power and mobilization capacity, still play an important redistributive role, at least in advanced countries.

Practical implications – Union attempts at equalizing incomes by compressing market earnings seem ineffective and impractical in the current day and age. Unions should seek to increase the workers’ skill levels and promote an egalitarian transformation of the workplace. This type of “supply-side” egalitarianism is not a new strategy for unions, but is very much embedded in the unions’ DNA.

Abstract

While there has been intense debate in the empirical literature over the evolution of the college wage premium in the United States, its evolution in Europe has received little attention. This paper investigates the causes of the evolution of the college wage premium in 12 European countries from 1994 to 2009, assessing the relevance of the supply factor as a determinant of the college wage premium. I use cross-country variation in relative supply, demand, and labour market institutions to examine their effects on the trend in wage inequality. I address possible concerns of endogeneity of the relative supply using an IV strategy exploiting the differential legislations of university autonomy and their variations over time. Results show that the strong increase in the relative supply that European countries have experienced has decreased the college wage premium. The most relevant institution is the minimun wage, which significantly decreases college wage premium.

Abstract

Purpose

In light of the current state of organization of public service provision and the growing importance of civil society in this area, this chapter examines the importance of an appropriate governance concept. This chapter argues that cooperation between organizations can be a key success factor and at the same time be regarded as an applied governance practice and the link between theoretical considerations and practical implementation.

Design

The chapter describes the theoretical and conceptual ties between cooperation and governance. Based on an organizational development project, the potential applications and their implementations are illustrated.

Findings

Based on theoretical considerations, practical research, and demonstrated using a case study, some factors of success of collaboration are identified. Using these success factors as a framework, the concrete case study is reviewed and conclusions for interventions and the behavior of consultants are named.

Originality and value

The findings of this chapter can serve scientists but especially practitioners such as senior executives, managers or organization development (OD) experts as helpful guidelines and orientations when it comes to implement sustainable organizational solutions cooperatively in the field of public governance. In addition to the illustration of practical applied essential process and implementation steps, the chapter provides conceptual information for the anchoring of sustainable development in cooperative relations in the field of public governance.

Introduction: The Internet has tremendously transformed the computer and networking world. Information reaches our fingertips and adds data to our repository within a second. Big data was initially defined as three Vs, where data come with greater variety, increasing volumes and extra velocity. Big data is a collection of structured, unstructured and semi-structured data gathered from different sources and applications. It has become the most powerful buzzword in almost all the business sectors. The real success of any industry can be counted based on how the big data is analysed, potential knowledge is discovered and productive business decisions are made. New technologies such as artificial intelligence and machine learning have added more efficiency to storing and analysing data. This big data analytics (BDA) becomes more valuable to those companies, focusing on getting insight into customer behaviour, trends and patterns. This popularity of big data has inspired insurance companies to utilise big data at their core systems and advance the financial operations, improve customer service, construct a personalised environment and take all possible measures to increase revenue and profits.

Purpose: This study aims to recognise what big data stands for in the insurance sector and how the application of BDA has opened the door for new and innovative changes in the insurance industry.

Methodology: This study describes the field of BDA in the insurance sector, discusses the benefits, outlines tools, architectural framework, the method, describes applications in general and specific and briefly discusses the opportunities and challenges.

Findings: The study concludes that BDA in insurance is evolving into a promising field for providing insight from very large data sets and improving outcomes while reducing costs. Its potential is great; however, there remain challenges to overcome.

On 24 January 2020, France informed WHO of three cases of novel coronavirus, all of whom had travelled from Wuhan, China. These three cases were the first confirmed cases in Europe. By 13 March 2020, Europe had become the epicentre of the pandemic with more reported cases and deaths than the rest of the world combined, apart from the People’s Republic of China. Many European countries like Italy, France and Germany took drastic actions and subsequently announced a lockdown, while other countries like the UK, the Netherlands and Sweden were much more hesitant to introduce such far-reaching safety measures. This chapter provides a literature overview of how the variation in such measures in Europe has ultimately resulted in changes in daily activities and travel behaviour during the pandemic. It focusses on five main themes: (i) reduction in mobility and activities, (ii) spatial-temporal adjustments in out-of-home activities in which people still participated, (iii) modal adjustments especially among people who used to travel by public transport before the pandemic, (iv) new out-of-home activities including new outdoor activities and (v) digital adaptations as several out-of-home activities were replaced by digital activities, with special attention to the experience of teleworking.
