Abstract

Discusses an attempt by the British Library Document Supply Centre to exploit the capabilities of electronic mail linked to satellite transmission as a channel for large scale document delivery. Examines the background, transmission procedure, mode of operation, and future directions for electronic document delivery. Surmises that satellite transmission′s most serious competition comes from ISDN, although the likelihood is that the two will merge to carry a multitude of services.

Business strategy and industrial economics.

Abstract

Subject area

Business strategy and industrial economics.

Study level/applicability

This case may be used early on in a basic course on strategy in an MBA program or in a course in industrial economics. It can also be used in a session of an executive development program on strategy.

Case overview

The TV Broadcasting industry, worldwide, has been moulded by frequent changes in technology and by regulatory interventions. So has been the case of India. The case begins with a general introduction to the technology of TV broadcasting and distribution and then moves on to a discussion of the technological changes in the Indian context. The evolving structure of the industry in India over three distinct periods is then described. The Industry consists of content producers, broadcasters, aggregators, direct-to-home distributors, multi-system operators and local cable operators. Over the three periods of time, changes in technology and regulation constantly impacted on the structure, the conduct and the performance of players in each segment.

Expected learning outcomes

The analysis of the case is expected to demonstrate the use of theoretical frameworks like the structure-conduct-performance model and Porter's five-force model in arriving at a prognosis of the structure of an industry in general, and that of the Indian TV broadcasting industry in particular.

Abstract

Digital libraries are becoming vital in basic research and general surfing of the Internet and the Web. Unlike text‐based digital libraries, image intensive digital libraries have inherent problems of slow downloading and uploading. These bottlenecks are caused by low bandwidth at the “last mile”, the distance between the telecommunications carriers’ distribution center – or central office and the user premises. Telecommunications technologies which are commonly used to alleviate this problem are: high end analog modems, T… series, frame relay, ISDN, cable modems, digital subscriber line and satellites. The article summarizes the latest developments of these technologies and how they can be used by various types of information professionals and end‐users in accessing digital libraries.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to estimate Nigeria's audiovisual services import demand using foreign football transmitted through digital satellite television (DSTV) as a case study. The major focus is on whether such imports effectively replace local recreation in watching domestic football.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors examined descriptive statistics. The methodology employed is a combination of descriptive analysis and cross‐sectional regression.

Findings

The paper's analytical framework establishes a link between the conventional import demand and demand for football functions, while the estimated empirical counterpart found that the demand for foreign football via cross‐border satellite transmission is a statistically significant function of taste for foreign football, quality, and entertainment. While descriptive statistics indicate respondents’ preference for foreign football, the test of significance rejected the hypothesis that the demand for foreign football broadcast service imports has replaced demand for domestic football as an entertaining sport. In addition, the demand for foreign football broadcast is fairly inelastic, as a greater percentage of the respondents will watch foreign football even if the cost of subscription or cost of paying per view in the viewing centers increase.

Originality/value

The paper describes the first of this type of research to be conducted in Nigeria.

Abstract

Contends that broadcast communications ‐ including video magazines, direct satellite transmission, CD‐ROM distribution to desktop PCs ‐ is the fastest growing medium for corporate communication, both external and internal. Illustrates the potential of broadcast business television (BTV) to effect organizational change and deliver competitive advantage. Argues that further developments are needed to move corporate communications beyond one‐way transmission of information to achieve a genuinely interactive medium for the effective facilitation of behavioural change.

Abstract

Identifies and gives an initial evaluation of new approaches to providing video‐based and video‐related services for training. Demonstrates how video services can be provided by means of video cassette recorder (VCR), teletext services, interactive video disc, as part of a multimedia computer based package, as a private broadband network, and by satellite.

Abstract

Identifies some of the background costs and causes of turnovers and absenteeism in business organizations. Argues that the primary function of the manager in the control of turnover and absenteeism is observation of employee′s behaviour and performance to detect any changes representing job dissatisfaction. Stresses the need for managers to keep a close eye on employees, the importance of proper employee selection, maintaining employee satisfaction, and management and organizational commitment to employees.

Abstract

Developments in the technology of electronic transmission of information are rapidly transforming the tools available to the general public for gathering information about current events. Direct access to news and retrieval of bibliographic information pertaining to traditional printed news sources are a daily reality for a growing number of individuals, on the job, at home, through personal computer terminals or at libraries. The purpose of this paper is to examine the characteristics of electronic databases providing access to news, as well as applications of these tools to various library settings.
