Abstract

Purpose

Studying the role of advertising music (ad music) in a retail context can be an emergence of new marketing practices. The purpose of this paper is to identify the potential usage and utility of ad music as an atmospheric stimulus in contrast to music (retail music) as an atmospheric stimulus. This paper also aims to provide a model, which depicts how ad music could be an alternative to retail music in retail settings with regard to consumers’ attitudinal influence and its optimistic correlation with related marketing outcomes.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper reviewed the literature related to the role of retail music as an atmospheric stimulus and studies related to the role of music in the ad.

Findings

Advertising music as an atmospheric stimulus is more likely to influence consumers’ attitude towards advertising music, towards advertising and towards the advertised brand. Contrary to retail music, advertising music as an atmospheric stimulus may help a consumer for ad recall, ad message/brand information recall, brand recall, brand identification and brand recognition. Consequently, advertising music may always have an advantage over retail music with regard to purchase intent, brand choice and financial return.

Practical implications

This work may encourage the advertisers for the proper usage of ad music as an atmospheric stimulus that may holistically magnify the saliency of advertising theoretically and practically.

Originality/value

This study is a novel attempt to conceptualise the potential scope of utilisation of ad music in the retail context.

Abstract

Purpose

Smart connected products (SCP) are the new archetype of products evolving. SCP are subtly changing the product-centric business to system-centric. Development and monetization of new SCP is an uphill task, it necessitates unique market orientation and business models. The purpose of this study is to establish a framework of variables influencing new smart connected products performance (NSCPP) at the market place, suggest methods to operationalize the framework.

Design/methodology/approach

The study identified key variables influencing NSCPP from existing literature. Conceptualized unique theoretical frameworks of these variables and empirically validated structural relationships. The study performed structural equation modeling using the data collected from 163 respondents having managed the development and monetization of 138 new SCP launches.

Findings

The study established structural relationships among selected variables proactive market orientation (ProMO), new product development proficiency (NPDPro) and business model innovation (BMoI). It revealed that the effect of ProMO is manifested through NPDPro. BMoI and NPDPro significantly influence NSCPP.

Practical implications

The study presented “ProMO Canvas” to plan and operationalize ProMO integrated with new product development (NPD) stage-gate activities. The study suggested the practitioners to execute ProMO activities preceding NPD activities and execute NPD, business model development activities in parallel to attain superior NSCPP.

Originality/value

This study is a novel effort to derive a unique empirical framework of variables ProMO, NPDPro and BMoI to attain superior NSCPP.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper seeks to establish relationships between women's reproductive health service use, assessed longitudinally and by facility type, with service quality perceptions related to public or private health facilities.

Design/methodology/approach

The study was mainly secondary and quantitative in nature. It included analysing data collected by the International Institute for Population Sciences (IIPS) and The Johns Hopkins University (JHU) as a follow‐up study to the 1998‐1999 National Family Health Survey (NFHS‐2). The follow‐up survey was carried out in Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Bihar and Jharkhand. In 2002‐2003, these four states were selected to capture socio‐economic and demographic variations. Analysis includes composite indices and logistic regression analysis. A scale was constructed to measure utilisation levels. Dimensions include: service proximity, doctor availability, waiting time, medicines, facility cleanliness, dignified treatment, privacy, service affordability and treatment effectiveness.

Findings

Findings indicate that doctor availability, waiting time, cleanliness, privacy and affordability at private health facilities enhance the probability that a health facility will be used for any reproductive health purpose. At the combined states level, medicine availability and treatment effectiveness at public health facilities enhances service use.

Research limitations/implications

The major limitation is that the study includes only selected Indian states.

Practical implications

The findings may enhance Indian service‐quality policy.

Originality/value

The paper's main contribution is that seemingly for the first time in India, healthcare service use has been measured longitudinally and then explained through service quality variables by comparing public and private health facilities.

Abstract

Purpose

The present study aims to demonstrate the use of renewable source in the preparation of polyurethane (PU) coatings and mitigation of corrosion of mild steel using nano zinc phosphate. Results indicated improvement in the properties of the PU coatings, especially anticorrosive properties by the addition of nano zinc phosphate.

Design/methodology/approach

Renewable-source-based polyestermyristamide polyol was synthesized using myristic acid as a starting material. The synthesis of polyol was carried by amidation as well as by esterification by a one-pot route. The structure of the prepared polyestermyristamide was confirmed with the support of end-group analysis and spectral study. PU coatings were prepared from synthesized polyestermyristamide polyol and used to protect metal substrate against corrosion. Corrosion properties of the prepared PU were found to be lower; hence, to improve the performance of these coatings, nano zinc phosphate was added to the coatings. The nano zinc phosphate was synthesized in the laboratory by reported sonication method and analyzed for morphology by scanning electron microscopy. Performance of coatings was studied with respect to effect of percentage nano zinc phosphate on thermal stability, mechanical properties and chemical resistances of PU coatings.

Findings

The combination of zinc phosphate nano rods and particles in myristic acid-based PU coatings provided substantial corrosion barrier properties to the coatings. Different per cent of the synthesized zinc phosphate nano rods and particles were loaded into the matrix, and corresponding coatings were estimated for corrosion resistance, thermal and chemical properties. Immersion study of the coated panels in 3.5 per cent NaCl solution showed good corrosion resistance for both PU coatings containing 2 and 3 per cent nano zinc phosphate.

Practical implications

This paper has provided the solution to replace existing petroleum-based raw materials with myristic acid as a renewable source in preparing PU coatings. Conventional coatings act as physical barriers against aggressive species but do not have ability to perform as permanent impassable to corrosive species. Hence, nano-sized zinc phosphate is used as corrosion inhibitor in to the synthesized PU coatings for enhancing anticorrosive performance.

Originality/value

In the paper, polyesteramide polyol is synthesized using renewable-source-based material, i.e. myristic acid to replace existing petroleum-based acid as a greener approach. Normally, vegetable oils are preferred as they have such kinds of polyols. The polyesteramide reaction is one pot that avoids the extra steps required in the synthesis. Further, it has been found that the pristine renewable coatings are unable to fully protect subtract from corrosion, whereas an addition of the nano-size zinc phosphate has enhanced the corrosion properties of the coatings.

Abstract

Purpose

The lives of the poor in the urban spaces of India are filled with hardships. They live amidst poverty and struggle to survive within other problems such as insecure jobs, lack of proper housing, unsanitary conditions and low levels of health immunity. This vulnerable section of the population has been rendered furthermore vulnerable by the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in ways that were never imagined before. Taking this into consideration, the purpose of this article is to examine the vulnerability of the poor in the urban settings of India with special reference to Mumbai in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Design/methodology/approach

The methodology adopted in the study is based on the analysis of secondary data and content analysis of the existing literature. In addition to this, the study also makes use of certain narratives of the urban poor in Mumbai that have been captured by various articles, reports and blogs.

Findings

The findings of the study reveal how the urban poor of India, with special reference to Mumbai, the financial capital of India, has emerged as the worst sufferers of the socioeconomic crisis caused by the social distancing and lockdown measures imposed for combating the pandemic.

Originality/value

The study tries to explore the reality of the urban poor's right to the city in the wake of the pandemic.
