Abstract

Purpose – People do not just interact, with each other; rather, they engage with each other using the visual and verbal instrumentations of communication at their disposal, constructing meaningful and intelligible conversations with differing degrees of precision of intention and clarity of expression. In doing this, they employ the “fundamental features of language,” described in various semiotic and structuralist theories.

Methodology – Here, we synthesize and integrate the key aspects of these language theories in an attempt to apply them to everyday conversations. The language features in question are routinely put into play by human agents to convey attitudes, emotions, opinions, and information and to achieve an engagement with the other.

Findings – Human relations, expansive in their range and intricate in their forms, demand complex instrumentations with which to conduct them. These instrumentations are essential features of the linguistic socialization of human agents, integral to both memory and habits of speech.

Abstract

Changes in the educational environment regarding the teaching–learning process are required as a result of social, economic, and cultural transitions. In light of this, this chapter will discuss and examine the flipped classroom method’s qualities as well as potential applications for individualized higher education. A bibliometric review of the Scopus database would be done in order to fulfil the suggested goal, and a report on a flipped classroom’s implementation at a Brazilian university was also provided. It was discovered that the traits are pre-class activities, actions done in preparation for class, and postclass activities. This instructional approach can be utilized to motivate pupils in individualized instruction.

Abstract

Purpose – This chapter investigates an episode where a supervising teacher on playground duty asks two boys to each give an account of their actions over an incident that had just occurred on some climbing equipment in the playground.

Methodology – This chapter employs an ethnomethodological approach using conversation analysis. The data are taken from a corpus of video recorded interactions of children, aged 7–9 years, and the teacher, in school playgrounds during the lunch recess.

Findings – The findings show the ways that children work up accounts of their playground practices when asked by the teacher. The teacher initially provided interactional space for each child to give their version of the events. Ultimately, the teacher's version of how to act in the playground became the sanctioned one. The children and the teacher formulated particular social orders of behavior in the playground through multimodal devices, direct reported speech, and scripts. Such public displays of talk work as socialization practices that frame teacher-sanctioned morally appropriate actions in the playground.

Value of chapter – This chapter shows the pervasiveness of the teacher's social order, as she presented an institutional social order of how to interact in the playground, showing clearly the disjunction of adult–child orders between the teacher and children.

Abstract

The fairy tale is a genre popularly associated with characters that inhabit opposite extremes in the axis of good and evil, such as the brave prince, the beautiful princess and the wicked witch. From the tension between the two extremes emerges the familiar narrative: as Dallas Baker has remarked, the death of the monstrous villain often precedes ‘heterosexual fulfilment’ (2010, p. 8), and thus the classical script is laid out.

This chapter will investigate how lesbian and bisexual retellings deconstruct that script and collapse the insurmountable distance between good and evil, hero and villain, queering fairy tale paradigms and upending genre expectations. Sam Miller declared in 2011 that ‘there are no more queer monsters’ (p. 222) in horror films, making the fact that they still lurk in fairy tale retellings all the more remarkable, although they often do so disguised as, or otherwise fused with, well-known childhood heroines. In this way, Lauren Beukes’s The Hidden Kingdom (2013) aligns a bisexual Rapunzel with Sadako, the vengeful spirit from Japanese horror film Ringu (1998); The Sleeper and the Spindle (Gaiman, 2014) features a Snow White who must save the Sleeping Beauty, here an evil witch guarded by zombie-like sleepers; and ABC's Once Upon a Time (2011–2018) features a bisexual Little Red Riding Hood who transforms into a dangerous werewolf. This chapter thus explores the significance of resilient, queer monstrosity in contemporary fairy tales, these authors' interpretation of the conservative archetype of the queer villain, and the potential of these retellings to enact subversive fantasies of empowerment for queer readers.

Abstract

Through his call to “reverse the lens” in leadership, Shamir (2007) helped trigger the emergence of followership theory as a new field of study in leadership research. While followership theory brings exciting new opportunities to leadership studies, it also introduces theoretical and conceptual challenges for researchers. In this chapter we address these challenges by showing how followership can be positioned fully within the leadership construct. We extend Shamir’s (2007) call for a balanced view in leadership by showing how followership theory adds new perspectives on the ways in which we can study leadership as a dynamic, fluid, relational process. The alternative views we present (e.g., position, role, identity, constructionist, and co-creation) approach leadership study from a range of paradigmatic perspectives that allow us to more fully capture the behaviors, interactions, relational dynamics, and processes through which leadership and followership are created and constructed. We conclude by reflecting on Shamir’s legacy as a scholar, and the contributions he made through his willingness to not only open his mind, but also to constructively challenge alternative perspectives and views.

Abstract

Approach – A handful of studies in ethnomethodology have targeted the conflicts of young members of society (Butler, 2008; Church, 2009; Danby & Baker, 1998a; Maynard, 1985a; Theobald & Danby, 2012, in press). Two occasionally overlapping strands of inquiry may be identified in this research: studies with an interest in charting the local organization of dispute exchanges and those seeking to highlight the socializing aspects of dispute procedures.

Purpose – This chapter examines a single feature of everyday exchanges taking place in a correctional facility for male youth. It investigates the ways through which certain membership category collections (such as ‘gender’ or ‘stage-of-life’) are drawn upon to instigate (Goodwin, M. H. (1982). ‘Instigating’: Storytelling as a social process. American Ethnologist, 9, 799–819.) adversarial exchanges.

Methodology – In so doing, this chapter draws on the two chief strands of ethnomethodological inquiry: sequential analysis of talk as well as membership categorization analysis.

Research implications – The analysis not only allows for a deeper understanding of commonplace discourse practices in a confined correctional facility for young people, but more importantly, of the methods through which inmates draw on local, situational as well as commonsense resources to proverbially ‘rock the boat’, that is, to change the order of ongoing events.

Social implications – In this way, this chapter offers insight into the mundane life of a group of young people in forced care.
