Abstract

Purpose

In the current global manufacturing scenario, all most all major players are now in a position to commit themselves to sustainability in all their operational initiatives and each of them follow their own methodology to attain their goal of sustainability. The purpose of this paper is to assess the sustainable manufacturing practice (SMP) in Indian manufacturing sector. This paper is also focused on the how lean practice leads to the sustainable manufacturing (SM).

Design/methodology/approach

A survey methodology is used for this research. The SMPs are identified for the literature review and survey questionnaire was framed. In all, 345 usable responses from four sectors namely automobile, electrical and electronics, machinery and process were collected through Google survey.

Findings

This research is focused on the SMPs. From this research it is found that sustainable product and process design (SPPD), lean practices (LP), agile practice and customization, sustainable supply operation and distribution and product recovery and return practices lead to the SM.

Research limitations/implications

This study has some limitations, which future researchers could consider. The large industries of Indian manufacturing across four sectors have been considered, the study can be further taken up to the micro, small and medium enterprises of the Indian manufacturing scenario. The questionnaire can be further developed as that it can be used for a global survey across various sectors and then comparison can be made between the Indian companies and their global counterpart. In future longitudinal studies can be conducted by considering the other SMPs like mass customization, smart manufacturing practices, etc.

Practical implications

The present research helps the stakeholders to develop strong regulatory norms/policies to promote the SMPs in Indian manufacturing industries. This research may help production/manufacturing managers/practitioners to understand various issues related to SM and how they can be used gainfully to improve their practices and performances towards sustainable development.

Social implications

This study enriches the corporate social responsibility in the organization. Corporate social responsibilities activities to be undertaken by the company shall include poverty and malnutrition, promoting health care including preventive health care and sanitation including contribution to the Swachh Bharat Kosh set-up by the Government of India for the promotion of sanitation and making available safe drinking water. This reinforces the company broader aim through its business activities to contribute to the wellbeing and sustainable development.

Originality/value

This study offers evidence of the implementation of SMPs namely SPPD, LP, agile practices and customization, sustainable supply operation and distribution and product recovery and return practices in Indian manufacturing organization. The authors propose a conceptual framework for SMPs and empirically tested.

Explores the relationships between statistical process control (SPC) and forecasting procedures. While both procedures are often applied and used in different contexts, a careful analysis shows that they go through the same stages that culminate in process or forecast monitoring. This apparent similarity of SPC and forecasting enables a general framework to be established for model‐based SPC. Discusses some forecasting procedures applicable to SPC and underlines the importance of SPC concepts in forecasting.

Abstract

Based on organizational task decomposition, an extensive role‐based access control (ERBAC) model is proposed in this paper. In ERBAC, the abstract concept of “permission” in RBAC96 is substituted by a set of “tasks”, mutual exclusion of basic business actions and mutual exclusion of roles are presented, and separation of duty (SoD) policy is defined formally. Furthermore, a method of identifying mutual exclusion of roles is described, and static SoD and dynamic SoD algorithms are discussed. This paper is significant for modeling and implementing business‐oriented SoD policy for information systems.

Abstract

Proposes an object‐oriented role‐based access control (ORBAC) model to efficiently represent the real world. Though ORBAC is a good model, administration of ORBAC, including creating and maintaining an access control security policy, still remains a challenging problem. Presents a practical method that can be employed in an enterprise environment to manage security policies using eXtensible Markup Language (XML). Based on ORBAC security policy expressed in XML, a role assignment algorithm is presented. The computation complexity of the algorithms is O(N) where n is the number of position roles in a user’s assigned position role scope.

Abstract

Purpose

Authorization and access control have been a topic of research for several decades. However, existing definitions are inconsistent and even contradicting each other. Furthermore, there are numerous access control models and even more have recently evolved to conform with the challenging requirements of resource protection. That makes it hard to classify the models and decide for an appropriate one satisfying security needs. Therefore, this study aims to guide through the plenty of access control models in the current state of the art besides this opaque accumulation of terms meaning and how they are related.

Design/methodology/approach

This study follows the systematic literature review approach to investigate current research regarding access control models and illustrate the findings of the conducted review. To provide a detailed understanding of the topic, this study identified the need for an additional study on the terms related to the domain of authorization and access control.

Findings

The authors’ research results in this paper are the distinction between authorization and access control with respect to definition, strategies, and models in addition to the classification schema. This study provides a comprehensive overview of existing models and an analysis according to the proposed five classes of access control models.

Originality/value

Based on the authors’ definitions of authorization and access control along with their related terms, i.e. authorization strategy, model and policy as well as access control model and mechanism, this study gives an overview of authorization strategies and propose a classification of access control models providing examples for each category. In contrast to other comparative studies, this study discusses more access control models, including the conventional state-of-the-art models and novel ones. This study also summarizes each of the literature works after selecting the relevant ones focusing on the database system domain or providing a survey, a classification or evaluation criteria of access control models. Additionally, the introduced categories of models are analyzed with respect to various criteria that are partly selected from the standard access control system evaluation metrics by the National Institute of Standards and Technology.
