Abstract

Purpose

Although it is a well-known notion that “a family firm does not survive beyond the third generation”, owing to the ineffective tacit knowledge transfer, studies investigating the relationship between generational evolution and knowledge innovation is scarce. Thus, this case study revolving Sin Kwang Plastic Resources Berhad (SKP) seeks to address this gap in literature.

Design/methodology/approach

To assess the development of family business, a longitudinal case study was performed by documenting the entire evolutionary process starting from its establishment until now. The historical profiles for SKP were obtained from the previous annual reports submitted to the government's Companies Commission (SSM). Secondary materials from the Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers (FMM) and the edge newspaper and articles on the company were also gathered. Throughout the in-depth interviews, the author can see how the next generation of this family firm innovates and implements tacit knowledge innovation in original equipment manufacturing (OEM) by adhering to the Japanese industrial standards.

Findings

Findings show that the second generation utilized the company's extensive knowledge in plastic contract manufacturing in SKP for tacit knowledge conversion, triggers the birth of STS Tecnic Berhad, a subsidiary company that manufactures plastic parts for the industrial packaging and automotive industry. To simplify the process of managing the complex business, SKP opted to “prune the family tree” by dividing the business, involving fewer managers and restricting the number of family shareholders.

Practical implications

This case study traces how Gan's family's tacit knowledge in plastic contract manufacturing have been acquired from the experience of contract manufacturing with the Japanese multinational corporations (MNCs) by further commercializing the tacit knowledge into different companies for different plants. SKP promotes tacit knowledge innovation in the learning organization, thus responding to the firm's sustainability.

Originality/value

This study demonstrates that knowledge transformation plays vital roles in product development and gaining competitive advantage. The success of this business is founded by the building of shared values, norms and technical understanding in plastic contract manufacturing among the Japanese MNCs in Malaysia.

Abstract

Purpose

This study extends the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) and analyzes the influence of skepticism (SKP) on the purchase intention (PI) of organic products, through the mediation of subjective norms (SN) and planned behavior control.

Design/methodology/approach

This was a quantitative, correlational and cross-sectional study. The study population comprised 446 university Millennials from Ecuador. Results were processed using exploratory factor analysis (EFA), confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and structural equation modeling (SEM).

Findings

The study showed that SKP does not directly influence the PI. However, if it does so through the mediating effect of SN and perceived behavior control (PBC). Also, the study found that attitudes (ATTs), SN and PBC influence the PI of organic products in university Millennials.

Originality/value

The study used TPB constructs and identified the influence of SKP on the intention to buy organic products in Ecuadorian university Millennials.

Abstract

Purpose

Few studies exist which delve into the possible factors that prevent ethically minded consumers from translating their ethical perceptions into ethical purchase intention (EPI). Thus, this study aims to explore how consumers assess corporate social responsibility (CSR) based on several influencing factors toward EPI, with CSR skepticism (SKP) as a moderator.

Design/methodology/approach

This cross-sectional study is conducted through a self-administered questionnaire and uses a positive research approach with a quantitative basis of enquiry. The partial least squares–structural equation modeling- model is used to examine the causal relationship between seven independent variables of CSR assessment (i.e. CSR awareness, knowledge of CSR position of company, cause importance, price consciousness, CSR image of company, credibility of CSR efforts and peer influence) with EPI. In addition, this study also examines the moderating effect of SKP in the relationship.

Findings

The findings show that CSR assessment factors are important to convert mere purchase criteria into EPI and SKP does play a significant role in weakening the relationship.

Originality/value

This study examines the moderating effect of CSR skepticism, the exploration of which still remains very limited in current literature.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to study the electrochemical behavior of 690 alloy with corrosion products in simulated pressurized water reactor (PWR) primary water environment.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper opted for a laboratory study using simulation of high temperature and high pressure environment immersion testing. The electrochemical behavior was studied by potentiodynamic polarization, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, scanning Kelvin probe microscopy (SKP). Moreover, the corrosion products were analyzed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy.

Findings

The results demonstrated that the particle majority in the 690 alloy corrosion products subsequent to high temperature and high pressure immersion testing were mainly oxides of Fe and Ni, which protected the matrix. As the immersion testing duration increased, the corrosion potential of the 690 alloy apparently increased, and the corrosion current density de'creased, while the corrosion resistance Rf increased gradually along with the density. The SKP demonstrated that the EKP increased by nearly 400 mV from −0.42 to −0.03 V following the immersion testing, indicating that the corrosion product film played an apparent protective role on the substrate.

Originality/value

This paper provides a theoretical basis for the corrosion behavior and inhibition mechanism of 690 alloy in PWR primary water environment.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to investigate the relationship between audit partner perfectionism traits and audit quality in Egypt, emphasizing the mediating role of professional skepticism.

Design/methodology/approach

A mixed-methods approach was used, combining a questionnaire and scenario-based questions for audit partners with secondary data from audited financial statements. The relationships between study variables were tested using structural equation modeling.

Findings

Results denote a significant indirect effect between partner perfectionism traits and audit quality through their professional skepticism. Perfectionism has a significant positive impact on partner professional skepticism, and skepticism influences audit quality.

Practical implications

This study offers opportunities to enhance financial reporting quality, allowing investors to confidently allocate financial market resources. Audit firms can consider the personality traits of auditors in the selection process, team formation and designing training programs. Regulators can use these findings to consider the role of personality traits and attitudes in audit quality when developing regulations and quality assurance systems in Egypt.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, no studies have examined the effect of partners’ perfectionism traits on professional skepticism and audit quality, especially in Egypt. By examining audit partners, who shape the tone at the top and are accountable for reputation, this study adds a novel dimension to understanding the impact of their qualities on audit outcomes. Moreover, combining survey and secondary data allows us to link these qualities with audit quality, objectively testing our hypotheses.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to investigate the corrosion behavior of zinc in a typical hot and dry atmosphere. It proposes the dynamic corrosion for different exposure periods. Results can provide the basic data and corrosion mechanism of zinc in such environment.

Design/methodology/approach

In this paper, the authors investigated the corrosion behavior of pure zinc exposed in the typical hot and dry environment in Turpan for one-four years, which has never been studied. Scanning electron microscopy, laser scanning confocal microscopy, electron probe micro-analyzer (EPMA), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were conducted to measure the corrosion morphology and products of zinc. Finally, combining electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and scanning Kelvin probe techniques, the corrosion mechanism of zinc in Turpan was examined.

Findings

The thickness loss of the zinc followed an exponential law with respect to exposure time: D = 3.17 t0.61, and both of the rust layer resistance and the charge transfer resistance increased with exposure time. The corrosion products mainly comprised ZnO, Zn(OH)2, Zn5(CO3)2(OH)6, Zn4SO4(OH)6·5H2O and Zn12(SO4)3Cl3(OH)15·5H2O. The Kelvin potentials shifted toward the positive direction from −0.380 to −0.262 V (vs saturated calomel electrode [SCE]) when the exposure time extended from one to four years and the distribution of the corrosion products became more and more uniform.

Originality/value

The corrosion behavior of pure zinc in the typical hot and dry environment in Turpan has not been studied. The dynamic corrosion for different exposure periods was obtained. The corrosion products were systemically investigated via energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, EPMA, XPS and XRD.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to examine whether organizational rewards are able to improve knowledge sharing and have an impact on employee performance moderated by organizational culture type in Ternate Municipal Government.

Design/methodology/approach

The design for data collection a uses survey approach, that is a form of research conducted to obtain facts about the phenomena that exist in regional government organizations to seek more factual and systematic information. The research was conducted in Ternate Municipal Government area of North Maluku Province, Indonesia. The organizations of regional apparatus are public sector agencies responsible for providing services to the public. The population in this study is echelon IIb‒IVb officials in regional apparatus organizations and certain structural officials. The units of analysis that are focused on in this research are the head of local agency, body, and office; the secretary of local agency, body and office; the head of board, the head of division, the head of the sub-board and the head of sub-division.

Findings

Organizational rewards in the form of giving economic rewards as remuneration, such as employee performance allowance, significantly affect individual attitudes in knowledge sharing. The interaction between the variable of remuneration with clan culture has a significant effect on knowledge sharing; these findings suggest that clan culture is a pure moderation variable that strengthens the relationship between remuneration and knowledge sharing. The result of this research proves that the interaction between the variable of remuneration with adhocracy culture has no significant effect on knowledge sharing. The interaction between the variable of remuneration with hierarchical culture has a significant negative effect on knowledge sharing. Market culture is not proven to moderate the relationship between remuneration and knowledge sharing. However, market culture variables directly and significantly affect knowledge sharing.

Originality/value

This research is the development of a research model conducted by Durmusoglu et al. (2014). The previous model uses organizational culture with a knowledge-sharing culture instrument, whereas this research develops organizational culture by using the type of organizational culture by Cameron and Quinn (1999), namely clan culture, adhocratic culture, hierarchical culture, and market culture. This type of organizational culture as a moderating variable can be expected to play a role in strengthening organizational rewards toward sharing knowledge and also impacting employee performance. Howell et al. (1986) revealed that organizational culture can strengthen the relationship between organizational rewards and disseminated knowledge. Hence, organizational culture moderates the relationship between organizational rewards for knowledge sharing to build upon Durmusoglu et al. (2014).

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to analyse the different requirements of Practice Direction 15.10 (which governs the process of family mediation in Hong Kong) and Practice Direction 31 (which governs the process of general mediation in Hong Kong), and to highlight the need to incorporate the spirit of family mediation into legislation to better protect children’s interest in a family dispute.

Design/Methodology/approach

The paper reviews and compares the content on Practice Direction 15.10 and Practice Direction 31 issued by Chief Justice of the Hong Kong Court of Final Appeal, and adopts interpretative and analytical approaches to evaluate their impact.

Findings

In an effort to promote parental responsibility-based negotiation in divorce proceeding, a missed opportunity in enacting the Children Proceedings (Parental Responsibility) Bill in 2015 might be a blessing in disguise as it offers another chance for policy makers to consider how to direct parties to negotiate and communicate, to seek and benefit from professional guidance on a continuous basis, and to seek alternative channels to resolve disputes other than the court room. The policy and the law advocating a switch from a “rights-based” to “responsibility-based” approach in handling children’s matters should be revisited by incorporating the spirit of family mediation into legislation.

Originality/value

Analyses are conducted through direct contextual review and documentary research. This paper conducts literal analysis of court guidance and unveils policy implications for the general public. It would be of interest to judicial officers, scholars and government officials concerning children’s rights and parental responsibility in divorce proceedings.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to develop a corrosion resistant zinc‐free coating for interstitial free steel.

Design/methodology/approach

The objective was achieved by developing a titania‐silica hybrid coating through a sol‐gel process by incorporating a dye molecule. The role of dye molecules was particularly important for enhancing the anti‐corrosion properties of the coating. The approach of current research was to develop a low‐temperature coating process that can bring similar performance to that obtained in case of zinc coating. Titania and silica precursors were mixed by stirring under a nitrogen atmosphere at 80°C to formulate a low‐temperature coating. The dye molecules were added before addition of water for subsequent hydrolysis. This complete formulation was applied over steel sheets using a roll coater as the application method.

Findings

The ranking order of improved corrosion resistance was found to be PATMS>EETMS>GPTMS and the addition of trace amount of tartrazine dye (60‐65 mg/l of liquid) in PATMS increased the corrosion service life in saline environments from 168 to 216 h, thus showing a promising improvement. Scanning Kelvin Probe results indicated that the corrosion reaction is controlled cathodically in presence of dye and, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy results exhibited a charge transfer resistance (Ct) of coating with dye of 419Ω cm2, which was higher than that of a similar coating without dye (360Ω cm2), indicating increased corrosion protection.

Research limitations/implications

This coating had improved barrier protection but lacked cut edge protection. Future work will focus on adding sacrificial protection by introducing compatible corrosion inhibitors, especially dye molecules, which are photosensitive.

Practical implications

This coating has huge potential for use in the automotive sector, especially for certain automotive parts (i.e. helm flanges), which suffer from poor durability in salty and high‐humidity atmospheres.

Social implications

Since this coating formulation utilises a partially aqueous base, some environmental impact cannot be avoided, but it will have less impact than a complete solvent base formulation.

Originality/value

The novelty of the work was the introduction of dye molecules as the corrosion inhibitor and their compatibility in the hybrid coating system.

Abstract

The structure, operation and development phases of the Hellenic Interlibrary Loan Network (HILL‐net) are described and the pros and cons of the model, as well as the conclusions after nine years of operation are reported. The HILL‐net has been the first systematic collaborative activity among Hellenic libraries. After the shift of most member‐libraries to the digital era, the HILL‐net is coexisting, in a symbiotic and complementary way, with access to electronic journals. The network started its pilot operation in 1994, initially with six member‐libraries. It currently consists of 127 member‐libraries, located in Greece. The network is based on a radial model with all peripheral libraries connected through the Internet to a central Union Catalogue of Periodicals, installed on the server of the National Documentation Centre (NDC) in Athens. The system provides online search capabilities to the database of the union catalogue and offers facilities of online document ordering of articles included in the journal collections of the member libraries.
