Abstract

Purpose

Functionalization of organic cotton fabrics (OCFs) by in situ deposition of chitosan reduced-stabilized silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). No other toxic chemicals used to warrant an ecofriendly synthesis protocol. Human toxicity of silver systematically avoided to use as textile clothing. Primary colors (nearly-red, yellow and blue) were imparted on OCFs via localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) of AgNPs. Decent mechanical properties and laundering durability in terms of antibacterial/fastness test improved mechanical properties.

Design/methodology/approach

Silver nanoparticles can be synthesized by using silver nitrate along with commercially available chitosan. Due to the surface LSPR property of silver nanoparticles, it exhibits versatile colors depending on the synthesizing procedures. The coloration occurs due to the electrostatic interaction between the AgNPs and chitosan-treated OCF. The nanotreated fabrics provide excellent mechanical properties with improved antibacterial effects.

Findings

X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analysis quantifies the developed materials in the substrates. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) characterization indicates the appearance and morphologies of silver nanoparticles into the fabric surface after the coloration process. It proves that the treated cotton knit fabric exhibits the LSPR optical features of AgNPs. The antibacterial and mechanical properties confirm the improved functionality of products.

Originality/value

Improved mechanical properties, antibacterial performances and coloration effects on organic cotton substrates in terms of chitosan-mediated nanosilver are not yet studied.

Abstract

Purpose

Studies on remarriages based on census data are not available in Bangladesh. Moreover, questions like why the remarriage rate is declining in Bangladesh despite the increasing trend of divorce rate and what factors are associated with this declining trend of remarriage are not answered yet. Thus the purpose of this study is to assess the prevalence of divorces and the extent to which this has influenced the likelihood of remarriage in Bangladesh.

Methodology/approach

Univariate, bivariate, and multivariate analyses have been performed by analyzing the most recent and largest sample census data of ever married men and women aged 10 years and above collected in 2011.

Findings

The prevalence of remarriage is low in Bangladesh but more common in rural places of residence, substantially larger in slums when compared with non-slums, among Bengali ethnic people, rent-free tenancy, the age group of 45 years and over, the male population, people of Muslim religion, who have no education, and poorest wealth quintile. Muslim religion, slum dwelling status, employed status, media exposure, and urban residence stand out as the major determinants in terms of remarriage. Women having higher education and the richest quintile of households are less likely to be remarried than those who have lower education and are from the poorest wealth quintile background. Males who remarry also followed the same pattern. But remarriage is higher among both the divorced males and females as compared to widowed males and females. Strategic targeting and responsive social policies are needed to be implemented toward the differential pattern of remarriage by sub-groups of the population and their vulnerabilities in relation to their marital status and marital relation, to understand remarriage dynamics in Bangladesh.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present the results of studies on the reaction of metal oxides such as Cr2O3 and Al2O3 with Na2SO4 in flowing SO2 (g) at 1,100 and 1,200 K.

Design/methodology/approach

The oxides chosen for the studies were initial scaling products during the oxidation of industrial alloys and invariably are involved in hot‐corrosion reactions in the presence of molten salts. The thermo‐gravimetric studies for the system were carried out as a function of Na2SO4 in the mixture. The different constituents in the reaction products were identified by XRD analysis and morphologies of the reaction products were discussed on the basis of optical metallography and scanning electron microscopic studies. The pH and conductivity of the aqueous solutions of reaction products were measured and an attempt made to functionalize these parameters with Na2SO4 concentration in the mixture. Quantitative estimation of the soluble metal was carried out using an atomic absorption spectrophotometer. The formation of products was investigated by thermodynamic computation of free energies of the reactions and the study of relevant phase stability diagrams.

Findings

Looking at the complex nature of the reactions, it is difficult to generalize the conductance studies, as many complex species are liable to hydrolyze in the aqueous solution. However, the break in few curves at certain mole fraction of Na2SO4 indicates the presence of soluble complex species.

Originality/value

The paper provides information regarding the reaction between a pertinent oxide and Na2SO4 and proper identification of reaction products, useful for understanding the occurrence and importance of fluxing reactions and in the interpretation of hot corrosion mechanism and the development of new protective materials.

Abstract

Purpose

This study investigates the determinants influencing customers’ intentions of using the foodpanda mobile app during COVID-19 pandemic.

Design/methodology/approach

This study is based on review of the literatures and 388 usable data collection from respondents having prior experiences in online food delivery (OFD) services in Dhaka city in Bangladesh. The subsequent data is analyzed through Structural Equation Modeling using Smart PLS 3.3.3.

Findings

The findings show that perceived usefulness (PU), ease of use, convenience, attitude and fear of COVID-19 significantly impact intentions to use foodpanda mobile app (ITUFPMA) and attitude. Further, attitude partially mediates between PU, ease of use, convenience and ITUFPMA. Moreover, fear of COVID-19 moderates the strength of association between attitude and ITUFPMA.

Practical implications

The findings of the study may be useful to OFD services operators in formulating business strategies for improving customers’ foodpanda mobile app use intentions and coping with competitive business environment of sharing economy sector.

Originality/value

The study presents a unique case highlighting what are influencing customer intentions toward OFD services during COVID-19 context. The current study provides important insights for industry operators by integrating PU, ease of use, convenience, attitude and fear of COVID-19 in examining ITUFPMA during COVID-19 situation.

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to explore the factors influencing customers’ revisit intentions of green hotels after the COVID-19 pandemic.

Design/methodology/approach

The study is based on the existing literatures and interviews of 404 respondents visiting hotels after the pandemic. The partial least square structural equation modeling is used to analyze the data.

Findings

The findings show that green attitude, green personality and personal norms significantly influence post-COVID-19 green hotel revisit intentions.

Practical implications

The findings of the study may be useful to hotel operators in formulating focused business strategies improving customers’ green hotel revisit intentions and coping with the new normal business environment of the hospitality industry.

Originality/value

The study presents a unique case highlighting how the hospitality business is changing after the COVID-19 pandemic. The study provides important insights for industry operators by integrating attitudes, personality and norms of the customers in examining the green hotels revisit intentions.

Abstract

Purpose – We build a theoretical lens that draws on an emerging theory of positive work relationships to examine whether constructive emotional expressions in work relationships influence changes in individuals' affective commitment to their organization.

Design/methodology/approach – Using longitudinal data collected from full-time employees, we employed a latent-difference-score (LDS) approach to examine whether changes in emotional carrying capacity could account for changes in organizational commitment.

Findings – The findings support this hypothesis and suggest a new perspective on the ways in which a change in relationship capacity may create changes in people's commitment to an organization.

Research limitations – The main limitation concerns the use of self-report, albeit time-lagged, data.

Practical implications – Developing higher levels of employee affective commitment is a key challenge for many organizations. Our study can help managers in recognizing the importance of building a relational space in which employees are able to express emotions frequently and openly, as well as engaging with other employees in listening to their emotional experiences and responding in a constructive manner.

Originality/value – This study contributes to an emergent body of literature that adopts a positive psychology lens to the study of employee experiences at work, by investigating the capacity to express emotions in general and its influence on people's affective commitment to the organization.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper investigates the effect of perceived value (hedonic value, utilitarian value, and conditional value) on customers’ behavioral intentions toward dining at Chinese restaurants in Bangladesh.  Moreover, this study examines the mediating effect of self-direction value and the moderating effect of price fairness on the association between perceived value and behavioral intentions.

Design/methodology/approach

The proposed model was empirically tested by collecting 390 useable responses from full-table service restaurants in Bangladesh via personal interview. Data were analyzed by testing the measurement model, predictive relevance, effect size and structural model using SMART PLS 3.

Findings

The research findings suggest that hedonic, utilitarian and conditional values significantly influence customers’ behavioral intentions toward dining at Chinese restaurants. Moreover, self-direction value partially mediates, and price fairness strongly moderates the linkage between perceived value and behavioral intentions.

Practical implications

This sfloattudy offers useful insights for managers who want to know the factors influencing behavioral intentions toward dining at Chinese restaurants. The findings also assist restaurant practitioners in knowing that customers' perceived value via self-direction value (personal value) and price fairness strongly predict behavioral intentions.

Originality/value

To the best of the author’s knowledge, this research is the first attempt to delve into customers' behavioral intentions toward dining at Chinese restaurants with the proposed model.

Abstract

The aluminide and CeO2 and La2O3 containing aluminide coatings on carbon steel have been prepared by a pack cementation process. The influence of CeO2 and La2O3 additions on the oxidation rates of aluminide coatings has been investigated. The performance of coatings was studied by measuring oxidation kinetics, metallography, SEM and X‐ray diffraction analysis techniques. The oxidation‐resistance of coated carbon steel is discussed on the basis of a decrease in oxidation rates as well as adherence of oxide scales. The oxidation rates of carbon steel and aluminide coatings were markedly reduced in the presence of CeO2 and La2O3 in the temperature range of 700‐900°C. The oxidation rates were significantly affected by the morphology of oxide scales. In the case where the structure of oxides scales was not seriously disrupted due to decarburisation, the oxidation rates were significantly reduced.

Abstract

Purpose

Taking the COVID-19 as the background, this study aims to investigate the direct influencing factors regarding knowledge sharing behavior (KSB) on new media platforms and discuss how the characteristics of the users could enhance the KSB through moderation effect, and provide empirical evidences.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on the social exchange theory and after the text analysis of the data collected from the Tiktok platform in 2020, this paper uses the quantitative method to evaluate the factors influence KSB on short video social platform during the COVID-19 outbreak.

Findings

KSB on new media platform could be enhanced by richer knowledge content of the video posted and the attribute of the platform users directly. Platform users could affect the trustworthiness of the knowledge shared, thus influence the knowledge sharing. On the early stage of the COVID-19, the richer content of the knowledge released by users could effectively enhance the KSB. On the early stage of the emergency events, the official users could play a significant role on KS. During the mitigation stage of COVID-19, the KSB of the knowledge shared by unofficial users with richer content could be enhanced and the moderation effect is relatively stronger.

Originality/value

The research extends the social exchange theory to a disaster management context. The authors provide an effective reference for future governments to effectively cope with the epidemic and spread public knowledge in an emergency response context. By analyzing the influence of knowledge content and influencer characteristics, it could help the social media platform to improve content management and optimize resource allocation.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper seeks to investigate the influence of government and foreign affiliates, particularly; multinational companies on corporate social reporting (CSR) development in an economy, where CSR awareness is low coupled with weak pressure group activism.

Design/methodology/approach

This is a cross sectional study that focuses on the information contained in the annual reports for year 2002/2003. This research uses content analysis as method to measure the extent CSR.

Findings

Based on regression analysis, the study evidences on the impact of government influence. However, the impact of foreign affiliation variables is not evident. Institutionalisation of the government's aspirations and commitment to CSR is perhaps the most appropriate description for Malaysian CSR practice.

Research limitations/implications

There are two main limitations of this study. Firstly, this study examines the annual reports for one year. Secondly, this study is annual reports centric. It does not examine any other stand alone reports that the respondents might have produced on the subject of society and the environment.

Practical implications

This study provides justification for government's role in promoting CSR practice. The impact is evidenced although there are no direct concerted efforts at that time by the government in respect of CSR policy implementation. The significant role is attributed to the unique Malaysian socio economic structure.

Originality/value

This study contributes to the CSR literature particularly in the context of economies where governments play a significant role in promoting economic development. It provides empirical evidence of the influence of government and foreign affiliates. It also adds to the literature by explaining the phenomenon from the Institutional perspective and its relevance to a developing economy.
