Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate, experimentally and numerically, the pressure pulse characteristics and unsteady flow behavior in a Francis turbine runner for moderate flow heads. The pressure pulses in the runner blade passage were predicted numerically for both moderate and high heads. The calculations were used to partition the turbine operating regions and to clarify the various for the unsteady flow behavior, especially the blade channel vortex in the runner.

Design/methodology/approach

Experimental and numerical analyses of pressure pulse characteristics at moderate flow heads in a Francis turbine runner were then extended to high heads through numerical modeling with 3D unsteady numerical simulations performed for a number of operating conditions. The unsteady Reynolds‐averaged Navier‐Stokes equations with the k‐ω‐based shear stress transport turbulence model were used to model the unsteady flow within the entire flow passage of a Francis turbine.

Findings

The dominate frequency of the predicted pressure pulses at runner inlet agree with the experimental results in the head cover at moderate flow heads. The influence of the blade passing frequency causes the simulated peak‐to‐peak amplitudes in the runner inlet to be larger than in the head cover. The measured and predicted pressure pulses at different positions along the runner are comparable. At the most unstable operating condition of 0.5a0 guide vane opening, the pressure pulses in the runner blade passage are due to the blade channel vortex and the rotor‐stator interference. The predictions show that the frequency of the blade channel vortex is relatively low and it changes with the operating conditions.

Originality/value

The paper describes a study which experimentally and numerically investigated the pressure pulses characteristics in a Francis turbine runner at moderate flow heads. The pulse characteristics and unsteady flow behavior due to the blade channel vortex in the runner at high heads were investigated numerically, with the turbine operating regions then partitioned to identify safe operating regions.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is twofold: to investigate if the three service quality dimensions (service environment, interaction and outcome quality), proposed by Brady and Cronin (2001), influence the development of event loyalty, among runners of the “‘Alexander the Great’ International Marathon”, and to test if running loyalty moderates the relationship between event quality and event loyalty.

Design/methodology/approach

In all, 368 runners participated in the study and filled the Sport Event Quality Questionnaire (Theodorakis et al., 2015) and an adjusted version of the Leisure Involvement Questionnaire (Kyle et al., 2010).

Findings

The results indicated that only the service environment and outcome dimensions contributed significantly to the prediction of event loyalty, while, and in contrast to other sport services, interaction quality was not shown to be an important determinant for the development of event loyalty. Furthermore, running involvement was shown to play a moderating role in the relationship between event quality and event loyalty. Service quality is more important for the development of event loyalty among low- than high-involved runners. The theoretical and applied implications of these results are discussed.

Research limitations/implications

The study provided results on how high- and low-involved runners perceive event quality, and for which of these groups the event quality is an important antecedent for the development of event loyalty.

Practical implications

Investigating the moderating role of involvement on the relationship between service quality and loyalty has also applied value. While committed runners have been traditionally seen as a key target group for event marketing professionals, the majority of runners in city marathons today are more leisure oriented. The increase in the number of leisure runners is actually the reason for the rapid growth of city marathons in the last few years. Meeting the needs of these leisure runners and increasing their loyalty levels is therefore a key task for marathon marketers today.

Originality/value

This study contributes to the literature, as for the first time it explores the moderating role of involvement on the relationship between service quality and loyalty in the context of a sport event.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to study the effects of the total bearing deformation on the performance of hydrodynamic thrust bearings.

Design/methodology/approach

Pressure distribution in the thrust bearing has been obtained using the Reynolds equation for the case of stable lubricant viscosity and isothermal conditions. Then, the deformation is found out by applying the constitutive equations for the linear elastic materials to both pad and runner. For the purpose of the generalization of the results, it is preferred to examine the case using non‐dimensional equations. The lubricant film thickness and pressure distribution before and after the deformation, the bearing deformation and the thrust load‐carrying capacity have been computed and compared for the steel runner‐steel pad and the steel runner‐bronze pad material pairs.

Findings

It is found that maximum load capacity loss occurs in the steel runner‐bronze pad pair as 3.03 per cent. Also, for a fixed load, when bearing dimensions are small, but deformations are large, the capacity loss due to runner deformations is nearly of the same order as those caused by pad deformations.

Practical implications

For small bearings heavily loaded, both pad and runner deformations should be taken into account.

Originality/value

In the relevant literature, there exist some papers, which consider the deformability of only one part of a thrust bearing. This paper differs from the previous ones in that the effects of the deformations of both pad and runner are taken into account in evaluating the performance of a thrust bearing.

Abstract

Purpose

The gaps between runner and nearby structures play an important role in the dynamic response of runner, especially for pump-turbines. This paper aims to evaluate the gap influence on the added mass and dynamic stress of pump-turbine runner and provide an improved method to predict the resonance of runner.

Design/methodology/approach

Acoustic-structural coupling method was used to evaluate the added mass factors of a reduced scale pump-turbine with different axial and radial gap size between runner and nearby rigid walls. Improved one-way fluid-structural interaction (FSI) simulation was used to calculate the dynamic stress of the runner, which takes into account fluid added mass effect. The time-dependent hydraulic forces on the runner surfaces that were obtained from unsteady CFD simulation were transferred to the runner structure as a boundary condition, by using mesh-matching algorithm at the FSI surfaces.

Findings

The results show that the added mass factors increase as the gap size decreases. The axial gaps have greater influence on the added mass factors for the in-phase (IP) modes than the counter-phase (CP) and crown-dominant (CD) modes, while the CP and CD modes are very sensitive to the radial gaps. The largest added mass factor is observed in (2 + 4)ND-CP mode (resonance mode). The results reveal that the transient structural dynamic stress analysis, with the consideration of gaps and fluid added mass, can accurately predict the resonance phenomenon. Resonance curve of the pump-turbine has been obtained which agrees well with the test result. The gap fluid has great influence on the resonance condition, while for non-resonance operating points, the effect of gaps on the dynamic stress amplitude is quite small.

Originality/value

This paper provides an accurate method to analyze the dynamic response during runner design stage for safety assessment. The resonance curve prediction has more significance than previous methods which predict the resonance of runner by modal or harmonic analysis.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the relationships among brand experience, sports event image and loyalty in the Jeju International Ultramarathon Race.

Design/methodology/approach

Data were collected from 313 ultramarathon runners during the 16th Jeju International Ultramarathon Race. Statistical analyses were carried out using confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modeling.

Findings

An analysis of the relationship between brand experience and sports event image revealed that affective experience is the most influential dimension, followed by sensory and behavioral experiences. However, intellectual experience showed insignificant relationship. Sports event image indicated a positive effect on word-of-mouth and revisit intention.

Research limitations/implications

Ultramarathon races are sporting events with few participants, even though it is becoming more popular. The attitude, motivation and personality of people participating in these races may be different in terms of the extreme characteristic and endurance level of sports activity. If the results of this study need to be generalized with other sports event images, a comparative study may help to understand the personality traits of people participating in ultramarathon races and other sports.

Practical implications

As ultramarathon races are not yet popular sports, to target more people, behavioral experience has an influential role because it is action oriented and actively engages the body. Enriching consumer life by facilitating and creating opportunities to physically experience as well as showing them alternate ways of doing things may attract them to substitute lifestyle and interactions (Pine and Gilmore, 1999). Few other popular endurance race events organize short-distance races and kid races for fun (e.g. Lavaredo Ultra trail race), to engage friends and family members before the start of the main event. Doing so may provide an opportunity to attract more runners, and they may engage in running activities and participate in these kinds of events later, after having this sort of casual experience.

Social implications

Social networking sites may be used to maintain continuous interaction with the runners and followers. Supporting a social cause is another measure to generate the intellectual experience of sports events. The result of this study shows no significant relationship between intellectual experience and the sports event image. To increase the worldwide popularity of this race and to attract more international runners, a judicious use of web platforms may be an option to maintain regular contact with a wider group of audience.

Originality/value

This study is the first to examine the relationship between brand experience and sports event image in an ultramarathon event context. Findings contribute to an understanding of the impact of brand experience on sports event image, thereby influencing the loyalty of runners participating in an ultramarathon event.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to identify consumer profiles based on behaviour of runners at marathon races and to determine key drivers for their intention to revisit the marathon.

Design/methodology/approach

Participants of three marathons in Germany (Cologne, Bonn, Hanover) were invited via e‐mail to take part in an online survey after the race (n=1,370). They were questioned about the trip to the city, the marathon event, and their socio‐demographics.

Findings

The cluster analysis revealed three clusters that are named holidayers, socialisers and marathoners. The results of the logistic regression analysis show that the intention to revisit is determined by the length of the trip, the daily spending in the city, and the satisfaction with the event.

Research limitations/implications

Non‐probability sampling represents a limitation of this study. Questions relating to the involvement and knowledge of running (first timer and repeat participant) could serve as valuable indicators to further differentiate between different types of runners.

Practical implications

It is suggested to offer special packages to the runners when they register for the race. One package could, for example, include the starting fee and two nights at a hotel. Moreover, the event organisers could offer more targeted side events such as athlete workshops on nutrition, training, and medical advice.

Originality/value

This paper offers an insight into different consumer profiles of marathon runners based on their behaviour and spending. Key indicators of the runner's intention to revisit the marathon are presented. This study contributes to close a research gap and allows marketers to better understand their consumers.

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to describe how the hydraulic performance and pressure fluctuations in the entire flow passage of a Francis turbine were predicted numerically for the highest head. The calculations are used to partition the turbine operating regions and to clarify the unsteady flow behavior in the entire flow passage including the blade channel vortex in the runner and vortex rope in the draft tube.

Design/methodology/approach

Three‐dimensional unsteady numerical simulations were performed for a number of operating conditions at the highest head. The unsteady Reynolds‐averaged Navier‐Stokes equations with the kω based SST turbulence model were solved to model the unsteady flow within the entire flow passage of a Francis turbine.

Findings

The predicted pressure fluctuations in the draft tube agree well with the experimental results at low heads. However the peak‐to‐peak amplitudes in the spiral case are not as well predicted so the calculation domain and the inlet boundary conditions need to be improved. The unsteady simulation results are better than the steady‐state results. At the most unstable operating condition of case a0.5h1.26, the pulse in the flow passage is due to the rotor‐stator interference between the runner and the guide vanes, the blade channel vortex in the runner blade passage and the vortex rope in the draft tube.

Originality/value

This study investigates the characteristics of the dominant unsteady flow frequencies in different parts of the turbine for various guide vane openings at the highest head. The unsteady flow patterns in the turbine, including the blade channel vortex in the runner and the helical vortex rope in the draft tube, are classified numerically, and the turbine operating regions are partitioned to identify safe operating regions.
