Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to calculate the normal force of a two degree of freedom direct drive induction motor considering coupling effects based on an analytical model. Compared with the traditional single degree of freedom motor, normal force characteristics of two-degree-of-freedom direct drive induction motor (2DOFDDIM) is affected by coupling effect when the machine is in a helical motion. To theoretically explain the influence mechanism of coupling effect, this paper conducts a quantitative analysis of the influence of coupling effect on normal force based on the established analytical model of normal force considering coupling effect.

Design/methodology/approach

Firstly, the normal forces generated by 2DOFDDIM in linear motion, rotary motion and helical motion are investigated and compared to prove the effect of the coupling effect on the normal force. During this study, several coupling factors are established to modify the calculation equations of the normal force. Then, based on the multilayer theoretical method and Maxwell stress method, a novel normal force calculation model of 2DOFDDIM is established taking the coupling effect into account, which can easily calculate the normal force of 2DOFDDIM under different motions conditions. Finally, the calculation results are verified by the results of 3D finite element model, which proves the correctness of the established calculating model.

Findings

The coupling effect produced by the helical motion of 2DOFDDIM affects the normal force.

Originality/value

In this paper, the analytical model of the normal force of 2DOFDDIM considering the coupling effect is established, which provides a fast calculation for the design of the motor.

Abstract

Purpose

To improve the power density and generation efficiency of the tubular permanent magnetic linear generators (TPMLGs) under realistic sea-stator condition, a TPMLG with 120° phase belt toroidal windings (120°-TPMLG) for wave energy conversion is proposed in this paper.

Design/methodology/approach

First, the structure of the 120°-TPMLG is introduced and its operation principle is analyzed. Second, the design process of the 120°-TPMLG is described. Meanwhile, the finite-element models of the 120°-TPMLG and the TPMLG with traditional fractional pitch windings (T-TPMLG) are established based on the similar overall dimensions. Then, the electromagnetic characteristics of the 120°-TPMLG are analyzed, such as air gap flux density, back electromotive force and load voltage. Finally, a comparative analysis of the magnetic flux density, flux linkage, load and no-load performance of the two generators are conducted.

Findings

The result shows that the 120°-TPMLG has higher power density and generation efficiency than the T-TPMLG.

Originality/value

This paper proposes a TPMLG with 120° phase belt toroidal windings (120°-TPMLG) to improve the power density and generation efficiency.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to unveil the generation mechanism of the thrust force in a tubular flux-switching permanent magnet (PM) linear (TFSPML) machine; the operation principle of the TFSPML machine is analyzed.

Design/methodology/approach

First, the air-gap flux density harmonic characteristics excited by PMs and armature windings are investigated and summarized based on a simple magnetomotive force (MMF)-permeance model. Then, the air-gap field modulation theory is applied in analyzing the air-gap flux density harmonics that contribute to the electromagnetic force. In addition, a simple method for separating the end force of the TFSPML machine is proposed, which is a significant foundation for the comprehensive analysis of this type of machine. As a result, the operation principle of the TFSPML machine is thoroughly revealed.

Findings

The analysis shows that the average electromagnetic force is mainly contributed by the air-gap dominant harmonics, and the thrust force ripple is mainly caused by the end force.

Originality/value

In this paper, the operation principle of the TFSPML machine is analyzed from the perspective of air-gap field modulation.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to propose a theoretical framework to illustrate the archival knowledge applied by archivists in their personal archiving (PA) and the mechanism of the application of archival knowledge in their PA.

Design/methodology/approach

The grounded theory methodology was adopted. For data collection, in-depth interviews were conducted with 21 archivists in China. Data analysis was performed using the open coding, axial coding and selective coding to organise the archival knowledge composition of PA and develops the awareness-knowledge-action (AKA) integration model of archival knowledge application in the field of PA, according to the principles of the grounded theory.

Findings

The archival knowledge involved in the field of PA comprises four principal categories: documentation, arrangement, preservation and appraisal. Three interactive factors involved in archivists' archival knowledge application in the field of PA behaviour: awareness, knowledge and action, which form a pattern of awareness leading, knowledge guidance and action innovation, and archivists' PA practice is flexible and innovative. The paper underscored that it is need to improve archival literacy among general public.

Originality/value

The study constructs a theoretical framework to identify the specialised archival knowledge and skills of PA which is able to provide solutions for non-specialist PA and develops an AKA model to explain the interaction relationships between awareness, knowledge and action in the field of PA.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to propose a double-sided switched reluctance linxear generator (DSRLG) exclusively for wave power generation. The initial dimensions are given through design experience and principles. To ameliorate comprehensive performance of the DSRLG, the multi-objective optimization design is processed.

Design/methodology/approach

The multi-objective optimization design of the DSRLG is processed by adopting a modified entropy technique for order of preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS) algorithm. First, sensitivity analyzes on geometric parameters of the DSRLG are conducted to determine several pivotal geometric parameters as optimization variables. Then, the multi-objective optimization is conducted on the basis of initial dimensions. After determination of synthetical evaluation value of each structure parameter, the best dimension scheme of the DSRLG is concluded.

Findings

After verification by finite element method simulation and dynamic simulation, the final dimension scheme proves to perform better than the initial scheme. Finally, experiments are conducted to verify the accuracy of both the stable finite element DSRLG model and dynamic simulation system model so that the conclusion of this paper proves to be reliable and compelling.

Originality/value

This paper proposes an improved structure of the DSRLG, which is superior for wave power generation. Meanwhile, a novel modified entropy TOPSIS algorithm is applied to the field of electrical machine multi-objective optimal design for the first time.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to propose a novel real-time three-dimensional (3D) model-based work-piece tracking method with monocular camera for high-precision assembly. Tracking of 3D work-pieces with real-time speed is becoming more and more important for some industrial tasks, such as work-pieces grasping and assembly, especially in complex environment.

Design/methodology/approach

A three-step process method was provided, i.e. the offline static global library generation process, the online dynamic local library updating and selection process and the 3D work-piece localization process. In the offline static global library generation process, the computer-aided design models of the work-piece are used to generate a set of discrete two-dimensional (2D) hierarchical views matching libraries. In the online dynamic library updating and selection process, the previous 3D location information of the work-piece is used to predict the following location range, and a discrete matching library with a small number of 2D hierarchical views is selected from dynamic local library for localization. Then, the work-piece is localized with high-precision and real-time speed in the 3D work-piece localization process.

Findings

The method is suitable for the texture-less work-pieces in industrial applications.

Originality/value

The small range of the library enables a real-time matching. Experimental results demonstrate the high accuracy and high efficiency of the proposed method.

Abstract

Since China initiated its “go global” policy that promotes its overseas investment, China’s Outward Foreign Direct Investment (OFDI) has increased almost twenty times during the last 10 years, reaching $55.9 billion in 2008. The issue of internationalization of Chinese OFDI has attracted increasing attention of researchers from a business perspective. This article systematically reviews the previous studies on overseas investments by Chinese MNEs and discusses the characteristics of Chinese internationalization behavior at both firm level and country level. The internationalization of Chinese companies cannot be understood as a simple game of “catch up” with established MNEs, and more firm‐level empirical studies should be carried out on how these characteristics influence firms’ strategic decisions.

Abstract

This paper analyses the development, regulation and future trend of the corporate insurance market in the People’s Republic of China (PRC). Using data for 212 Chinese listed companies over the period 1997‐99, this study provides some preliminary empirical evidence regarding the property insuring behaviour of Chinese companies. I find that the level of property insurance spending in Chinese companies is inversely related to company size and leverage. Additionally, the purchase of property insurance appears to vary according to geographical location and industry sectors. However, foreign ownership does not appear to have important influences on the managerial property insurance decisions in the Chinese corporate sector. The findings of this study could thus have important implications for various groups (e.g., corporate lenders and foreign insurers) that are interested in the Chinese corporate sector and insurance markets.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to offer a critical perspective on China's official outward foreign direct investment (OFDI) data, commonly used in most research on the internationalization of Chinese companies. Owing to the deficiencies of China's statistical system, official OFDI data leave us with only a limited understanding of the pattern of Chinese OFDI in general and cross‐border mergers and acquisitions (M&As) in particular.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on a theoretical discussion of the internationalization of companies, some propositions about the development pattern of Chinese M&As are derived. This study uses the Dealogic database, which covers Chinese cross‐border M&As during the period from January 1999 to May 2007 in order to analyse the development trend, geographical destination, sectoral distribution, and equity participation of Chinese cross‐border M&As.

Findings

First, the growth of China's OFDI has not been as fast as expected, while the development of cross‐border M&As has been very impressive. Second, although official OFDI statistics reveal that Asia remains the most important investment destination, our M&A data analysis shows that the developed countries in the West have attracted most Chinese cross‐border M&A investments. Third, in contrast to the official OFDI statistics, our findings reveal a heavy concentration of M&As in mining and manufacturing. Finally, our cross‐border M&A data suggest that Chinese companies predominantly seek high‐level equity participation in the acquired target companies abroad.

Originality/value

This paper fills a gap in the study of the development pattern of Chinese cross‐border M&A investments and offers a complementary view and a better understanding of the internationalization of Chinese companies.
