Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to develop the analytical model of the rotary hook geometric parameters’ interconnections, which allows determining the characteristic modes of interaction of its elements. In this study, the interaction mechanism of the bobbin case, the rotary hook and the support finger was defined, which allows to reduce the unit vibro-impact activity.

Design/methodology/approach

As practice shows, the bobbin case sometimes turns against the rotary hook movement. This phenomenon can be used for the free passage of the needle thread. The change in the geometric parameters of the rotary assemble will allow to decrease its vibro-impact activity.

Findings

The interrelations of rotary assemble geometric parameters are established, and it is possible to determine the characteristic modes of its elements interaction and to establish a mechanism for controlling them. This allows reducing the vibro-impact activity of joint, improving friction modes and sewing technology. Criteria and values of a gap formation between the right contacting face of bobbin case and support finger protuberance are found.

Research limitations/implications

In the future, it is necessary to conduct research on the behavior of the rotary assemble elements in the frequency operating modes of the sewing machine. It is necessary to show the influence of the resonance modes of operation of the rotary hook drive on the interaction of elements.

Practical implications

The practical use of the results of the work makes it possible to reduce the vibratory impact of the shuttle, and also to create conditions for the smooth operation of the rotary hook and the bobbin case, and ensure the formation of a gap between the contacting face of bobbin case and support finger protuberance for the free passage of the needle thread. The results of the work can be used in the design of a rotary assemble with specified characteristic parameters and modes of elements interaction.

Originality/value

An analytical model of interrelations of geometric parameters of a rotating hook is developed. The characteristic modes of interaction of the rotary assemble elements were studied. The reasons for the vibro-impact activity of the rotary hook are studied. Also, the conditions under which the bobbin case will move against the direction of rotary hook rotation are determined.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to report a research in which fuzzy assessment of failure mode and effect analysis (FMEA) was examined on the design of rotary switches.

Design/methodology/approach

In the case study reported in this paper, fuzzy FMEA of a rotary switch was analysed, starting from its individual components to subsystems. Failure modes were identified and the effect of these modes was studied, then the results before and after taking actions were compared.

Findings

The usage of fuzzy FMEA enabled the reflection of real situation for determining the interdependencies among failure modes and effects of rotary switches with the incorporation of knowledge and expertise of experts.

Research limitations/implications

The assessment has been attempted on a single rotary switch assembly. In future, this method can be applied in complex systems.

Practical implications

The paper shows that the method enabled the decision makers to share information from various working groups.

Originality/value

The case study has been conducted in a rotary switches manufacturing organisation and the results before and after improvement have been compared.

Abstract

Study of rotary table assembly machines shows that most of the malfunctions occur as a result of substandard parts included in the parts to be assembled. A control system has been developed which can detect substandard items and defective operations; the system can take corrective action so the next cycle is fault free, allowing productivity to increase.

Abstract

A report of the 2001 Manufacturing Week exhibition held at the NEC in Birmingham, highlighting some of the exhibits of assembly equipment manufacturers. Amongst the larger companies in focus are the Swiss company, Mikron and Rexroth Bosch, the new amalgamation following the sale of Rexroth's original corporate owner, Mannesmann. Rexroth Bosch showed a new compact Scara robot and flexible link conveyor, while Mikron emphasised its product evolution in the high volume, flexible assembly field and its partnership philosophy. There is a description of two Mikron installations in the telecoms and medical industries. Other contents include two rotary indexing machine suppliers and a special purpose equipment manufacturer who exhibited a machine assembling water filter cartridges.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to review the 2007 ATExpo Show and related Electronics Assembly Show, Quality, PlasTec and National Manufacturing Week Shows held jointly in Chicago.

Design/methodology/approach

In‐depth interviews were conducted with exhibitors who provide assembly systems, controls, grippers and other assembly systems components.

Findings

Though automated assembly has been around many decades, suppliers have continued to innovate new technologies, controllers and software that enhance the automated assembly process.

Originality/value

The paper is of value in confirming that suppliers are continuing to develop assembly cells, modular elements, software and other related components that help make the design and commissioning of systems faster and cheaper. Automated assembly is a truly competitive approach to reducing cost of assembly, quality of products produced and efficiently managing resources.

Abstract

This paper describes guidelines for the design of grippers for use in modular manufacturing workcells. Gripper design is an important and often overlooked aspect of the design of a complete assembly system. Here, guidelines are presented which can be applied to a wide variety of grippers. Guidelines are divided into three major categories: those that improve system throughput, those that increase system reliability, and those that decrease cost. Designs of several grippers, currently being used in a modular manufacturing workcell, are presented as examples of the application of the guidelines to real world problems.
