Based on a lecture prepared as part of the celebration of Cranfield University's 50th anniversary. After briefly reviewing the early years, including Cranfield University's entry into this technology, discusses the nature of this industry, Some of the technology drivers, including environmental concerns, are examined to provide a background against which the development and the future of the industry can be considered. This is followed by a brief survey of some of the possible new civil aero gas turbine applications over the next 50 years, both the very likely and some curiosities. Finally, the changes that are likely to occur within the industry as a result of wider economic and political trends are considered, as well as the implications for those working within the industry. The development of the civil aero gas turbine has contributed, in large measure, to today's, US$ 300 billion civil aviation industry and is rightly seen as one of mankind's major engineering achievements. A single paper cannot do justice to this industry.

Leading British engineering design and consulting firm Amp (www.arup.com) has won the 40th annual MacRobert Award, the UK's biggest prize for engineering innovation. The 2009 award was given for Amp's visionary Beijing Aquatic Center, known as the Water Cube, whose breathtaking architecture is matched by engineering innovations in fabrication, materials and environmental management. In winning the award, Amp beat off three other high caliber finalists. These were Orthomimetics, QinetiQ, and Rolls Royce.

In order to succeed in an action under the Equal Pay Act 1970, should the woman and the man be employed by the same employer on like work at the same time or would the woman still be covered by the Act if she were employed on like work in succession to the man? This is the question which had to be solved in Macarthys Ltd v. Smith. Unfortunately it was not. Their Lordships interpreted the relevant section in different ways and since Article 119 of the Treaty of Rome was also subject to different interpretations, the case has been referred to the European Court of Justice.

Despite the desperate general state of the UK’s engineering and manufacturing industry, great engineering innovation is still happening. This has again been highlighted by the diverse nature of the innovations from the four finalists for the 2003 MacRobert Award. Initiated in 1969, The Royal Academy of Engineering MacRobert Award is the UK’s most prestigious annual prize for engineering innovation.

It has been stated many times that the standards of UK engineering in terms of people are too low in comparison with other industrialised countries. Industry's comment about this statement is that it is far too much a generalised viewpoint, when in fact standards throughout the UK cover a wide spectrum; but unfortunately only the worst aspects are given publicity. The status of the engineer is also questioned, as society in general does not realise an engineer's value/contribution to the UK economy. This may be due to society not being given a clear definition of an engineer. For example an engineer may be described as a man who designs and manages a project of the utmost complexity, such as an aircraft, but also as the man who maintains the aircraft as a maintenance fitter. This is not to deride a maintenance fitter's contribution but to indicate the wide spectrum in which the word ‘engineer’ is used. To improve the public image of the professional engineer, the engineers themselves must establish an image of professionalism, which will mean taking the responsibility and seeking leadership by initiative. Our design engineers and their innovations are second to none, but unfortunately there is a void between them and the commercial and manufacturing aspects of a business. For example one only needs to look at the classic case of Rolls Royce in 1971.
