Abstract

On some occasions some people are wont to say, “There is no alternative!” I don't agree. There is almost always an alternative. For example, I believe that there is an alternative to information science. I don't mean librarianship or management information or information technology; I have in mind what I'd like to call for the purpose of this paper, “Alternative Information Science”.

Abstract

In the years ahead, we will have to answer the questions implicit in the title to which FID has asked me to speak. How do you find out what information business managers need? And how can we best fulfil these needs? Let me start by defining what we are about in the practice of information as a trade, a craft or a profession.

Abstract

Looks at the effects reduction in Local Government spending has had on race initiatives in the multi‐racial library service. Notes that multi racial librarians will be required to work two days a week at designated service points therefore diluting the service they provide. Concludes that a service for black and ethnic minority communities may be forced to depend on income from the very communities it was created to serve.

Abstract

I am interested in one problem. As far as I know, at present the EEC is working on the new classification of means of production. Apparently, the work is almost completed and the system is to be implemented this or next year. It is a very important issue with regard to access to business information. Is it possible to obtain more information about this system? And are the information agencies such as EuroOp interested in constructing in Poland a proper system of classification of means of production, which would facilitate the exchange of information in the shortest possible time?

Abstract

The British Library Research and Development Department (BLR&DD) held its Open Day on November 14th 1990. The event was well‐publicised and drew representatives from the library and information community, along with many others from outside the profession, who came to take a closer look at the Department's work. The day took the form of an exhibition and demonstrations of various research projects, and two informal discussion sessions. The intention was to stimulate debate by giving participants the opportunity to hear about some of the research work funded by the Department, and then to put their own views. A report of the day's proceedings has been published and is available free of charge.
