Abstract
Examines the development of the hotel grading scheme for the island of Jersey. A brief history of Jersey hotel grading leads to the need for a new scheme and why an independent route was taken rather than joining the mainland Tourist Board′s Crown scheme. An outline of the development and form of the new scheme is provided along with an explanation of its operation. The idiosyncrasies of operating an island hotel scheme are examined, indicating the need for an individual approach to the solving of hotel registration and grading difficulties.

Abstract
Examines a definition of hotels and the number of hotels in the countries of the UK. Indicates by country the proportions of hotel stock represented by the major grading schemes and guides. Analyses the schemes by number and quality of grade where appropriate, and each category by its share of the country′s hotel stock. Explains the difficulties of comparison between grades of different schemes, concluding that a percentage share of grades should be employed. Indicates with equivalence tables percentage shares of quality grades for the major comparable schemes. Concludes that although the numerical comparisons can be criticized because of minor differences in the schemes, a foundation is provided for more meaningful comparisons than has previously existed.

Town house hotels are a small but expanding segment of the UK hotel sector. Little has been published about them and the article sets out to provide a background and some characteristics of the sector. Indicates definitions together with some assessment of the size of the sector. Presents operational characteristics such as food and beverage services, security, design, staffing and pricing strategies. Considers marketing approaches, as well as the question of hotel classification and grading. Abstract
Indicates that it is 14 years since the Beavis Consultative Committee recommended that the matter of hotel registration and its effectiveness be reviewed within three to five years. Presents definitions of registration, classification and grading together with a recent historical perspective of the developments of statutory registration in the United Kingdom. Examines the reasons for statutory registration and describes existing UK compulsory schemes outside the mainland. Contrasts the lack of progress in the UK, and the degree to which price and tariff controls are in operation, with schemes in the European Community. A brief literature review presents the support for statutory registration and classification. Re‐examines the eight conclusions of the Beavis Consultative Committee. Concludes that it may be pertinent to review the position of statutory hotel registration, classification and grading.

Abstract
The importance of Japan as an economic competitor in the world marketplace gives special significance to stereotypes and prejudice that non‐Japanese hold concerning these people. There is a feeling, for example, that the Japanese are wonderful imitators of other people's ideas and inventions, but have yet to produce a world‐class invention of their own. The Japanese are said to think alike, work alike, act alike and generally be so homogeneous that it is hard to imagine a culture emphasizing individuality flourishing in the island nation. As with all such stereotypes, there is probably a kernel of truth in these, but they ill serve anybody hoping to trade or in any way get to know a society so successful that it has become one of the world's pre‐eminent industrial powers where only 50 years ago it lay in ruins and defeat. There must be much more to this society than lockstep regimentation and slavish copying of what the world outside affords.

Abstract
Bridge programs constitute institutionalized interventions to provide equitable educational opportunities for low-income, first-generation, and disadvantaged traditional undergraduate students (Gullatt & Jan, 2003). These are typically pre-college transition programs that serve to facilitate college access and readiness. This chapter discusses the role of bridge programs at American colleges and universities and the recommends integration of the Dynamic Student Development Metatheodel (DSDM) student success model (Frederick, Sasso, & Barratt, 2015). This chapter outlines the typology of bridge programs at the federal, state, and campus levels and highlights the target populations of these programs. Evaluation and outcomes regarding the efficacy of these programs are also highlighted. Implications and considerations for practice are provided integrating specific constructs from the DSDM to inform the further development of bridge programs to increase student development.

Abstract
This chapter quotes how St. John, Daun-Barnett, and Moronski-Chapman (2012) maintained ideological shifts in American culture and politics which are important to the study of higher education policy because of the influence on public finance, government regulation, and curriculum. From the Great Depression through the Cold War to the present, human capital theory has guided higher education (St. John et al., 2012). Veiled concepts of accessibility and equity were substantial during this era to mask more nefarious attempts to shift to the privatization away from the public good of American Higher Education (Astin & Oseguera, 2004). This chapter focuses on the role of accountability as a neoliberal ideology, and the impact of this ideology, as a form of corporatization on higher education. Furthermore, this focus on corporatization intersects specifically with the discourse pertaining to corporate social responsibility (CSR), which can be understood as transparent actions that guide an organization to benefit society, such as in funding and accessibility. In this chapter, the authors engage in a critical analysis of neoliberalism, and academic capitalism, as threats to the institution of higher education as a public good. The authors initially provide a framing of the public to private dichotomy of American higher education in explaining the various products produced and expected outcomes. A historical context for performance-based funding in American higher education is provided as an understanding of the nature and scope of the contemporary model. To understand the influence of public funding policies on American higher education, it is also necessary to comprehend the role of political ideology and how the business model of higher education has evolved. Thus, a general discussion of neoliberalism permeates the entirety of this discussion. This chapter concludes with the tertiary impacts of neoliberalism.

OWING to the comparatively early date in the year of the Library Association Conference, this number of THE LIBRARY WORLD is published so that it may be in the hands of our readers before it begins. The official programme is not in the hands of members at the time we write, but the circumstances are such this year that delay has been inevitable. We have dwelt already on the good fortune we enjoy in going to the beautiful West‐Country Spa. At this time of year it is at its best, and, if the weather is more genial than this weather‐chequered year gives us reason to expect, the Conference should be memorable on that account alone. The Conference has always been the focus of library friendships, and this idea, now that the Association is so large, should be developed. To be a member is to be one of a freemasonry of librarians, pledged to help and forward the work of one another. It is not in the conference rooms alone, where we listen, not always completely awake, to papers not always eloquent or cleverly read, that we gain most, although no one would discount these; it is in the hotels and boarding houses and restaurants, over dinner tables and in the easy chairs of the lounges, that we draw out really useful business information. In short, shop is the subject‐matter of conference conversation, and only misanthropic curmudgeons think otherwise.

Abstract
Many consumer behaviour researchers have concluded that using self reports in the measurement of influence in family decision making may provide data which is not reflective of actual influence among family members. This suggests the need for different methods of obtaining influence data. This paper reports the development and preliminary application of an observed influence scale; a scale developed to measure actual influence using content analysis of videotaped family interactions. This observational method determines the relative influence of family members over three stages of the decision making process. The scale is tested on nuclear families with two adolescents, 89 from New Zealand and 24 from Singapore. The analysis indicates the scale has strong predictive and face validity.
