Abstract
Purpose
This perspective article aims to summarise the understanding of the link between regional development and family business and explore potential pathways for further investigations.
Design/methodology/approach
This study employed a scoping review methodology which attempts to explore a new topic of study and unveil its main concepts and relationships.
Findings
This study emphasises the need to enhance the cross-fertilisation of knowledge to bridge the gap between studies on regional development and family business. In addition to the traditional research pathways towards discerning the impact of formal and informal institutional contexts and economic and geographical locations on family business behaviour and performance, this perspective article encourages future researchers to delve into the regional-level mechanisms through which family businesses can influence and contribute to regional economic and social outcomes.
Originality/value
This perspective study employs a context theorising lens to examine the connection between regional development and family business.

Abstract
Purpose
This conceptual, multi-voiced paper aims to collectively explore and theorize family entrepreneuring, which is a research stream dedicated to investigating the emergence and becoming of entrepreneurial phenomena in business families and family firms.
Design/methodology/approach
Because of the novelty of this research stream, the authors asked 20 scholars in entrepreneurship and family business to reflect on topics, methods and issues that should be addressed to move this field forward.
Findings
Authors highlight key challenges and point to new research directions for understanding family entrepreneuring in relation to issues such as agency, processualism and context.
Originality/value
This study offers a compilation of multiple perspectives and leverage recent developments in the fields of entrepreneurship and family business to advance research on family entrepreneuring.

Abstract
Purpose
As many businesses faced economic disruption due to the Covid-19 pandemic and sought financial relief, existing bank relationships became critical to getting a loan. This study examines factors associated with the development of personal relationships of rural small businesses with community bank representatives.
Design/methodology/approach
We applied a mixed-method approach. We employed descriptive statistics, principal factor analysis and logistic regression for data analysis. We distributed an online survey to rural small businesses in five states in the United States. Key informant interviews with community bank representatives supplemented the survey results.
Findings
A business owner’s trust in a banker was positively associated with the establishment of a business–bank relationship. However, an analysis of individual trust’s components revealed that the nature of trust is complex, and a failure of one or more components may lead to decreased trustworthiness in a banker. Small businesses that preferred personal communication with a bank were more inclined to relationship banking.
Research limitations/implications
Due to the relatively small sample size and cross-sectional data, our results may not be conclusive but should be viewed as preliminary and as suggestions for future research. Bankers should be aware of the importance of trust for small business owners and of the actions that lead to increased trustworthiness.
Originality/value
The study extends the existing knowledge on the business–bank relationship by focusing mainly on social (instead of economic) factors associated with the establishment of the business–bank relationship in times of crisis and high uncertainty.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of intellectual capital (IC) components and absorptive capacity (ACAP) on entrepreneurial orientation (EO). Furthermore, it attempts to investigate the mediating role of ACAP between intellectual components and EO.
Design/methodology/approach
Using a self-administered survey to sample the Jordanian pharmaceutical industry, the research measurement scale was adapted from previous studies, and data were collected from 24 pharmaceutical companies. The proposed conceptual model and associated hypotheses were tested using structural equation modeling.
Findings
The empirical findings indicate that relational capital (RC) and structural capital (SC) have a significant impact on EO and account for 72.2% of this aspect. However, it is somewhat unexpected to find that human capital does not have a significant direct impact on EO. ACAP positively mediates the relationships between RC and SC and EO. Finally, this study has several theoretical and practical implications with regard to the business literature and management practices.
Originality/value
This research bridges gaps in the literature and highlights the importance of ACAP in knowledge-based industries. The assessment and estimation of how knowledge ACAP is associated with entrepreneurship orientation has not been previously provided. From a practical perspective, the findings of this research can be used by firms in the pharmaceutical industry to enhance ACAP and better exploit their IC, leading to a more proactive and innovative entrepreneurship orientation. This, in turn, can lead to the development a new products and services. Furthermore, by examining the mediating role of ACAP between intellectual capacity components and EO in the pharmaceutical industry, the research contributes to the growing body of literature on entrepreneurship orientation in developing countries.

Abstract
Purpose
The aim of this paper is to investigate the effects of environmental dynamism on different EO dimensions in family firms. The authors also examine the moderating role of national culture (uncertainty avoidance and in-group collectivism) and the level of family control and influence in fostering/hindering this relationship.
Design/methodology/approach
A survey was conducted among 1,143 family firms from twenty-eight countries. The authors developed and tested hypotheses through a fixed-effects regression analysis.
Findings
The findings suggest that environmental dynamism has a positive effect on all three EO dimensions. Analysis reveals a positive moderating role of family control and influence and negative moderating roles of in-group collectivism and uncertainty avoidance.
Practical implications
The findings imply that family firm managers should carefully interpret the influence of their national culture on family firm behavior. More specifically, family firms in dynamic environments should consider the importance of the national culture in which they are embedded. Those operating in high uncertainty avoidant and highly collectivist cultures should take proactive steps to cultivate a corporate entrepreneurial culture. On the other hand, the family should not undermine the effect of its control and influence. In dynamic environments, family control and influence may be a competitive advantage in reinforcing entrepreneurial orientation.
Originality/value
The study contributes to the literature on EO in family firms by expanding the previous research on the antecedents of EO and examining moderation effects of culture and family control and influence across a broad multi-country sample. In contrast with the common findings regarding the effect of family logic on EO, the study shows the strengthening role of family control and influence in the relationship between environmental dynamism and EO. The authors show that culture as an informal institution may also play a critical role in hindering/strengthening the relationship between environmental dynamism and EO.
