Abstract

In the first part of this article the author discussed four themes which he posed as fundamental if any big change for the good is to be made in mathematics teaching. Briefly, these were that mathematics should be continually created by every learner, that children should and can master elementary concepts before dealing with particular examples of them, and that if they are used to this then arithmetic conies more easily. Finally, that books and apparatus often conceal the mathematics which the teacher wants emphasised. This part deals mainly with the Cuisenaire‐Gattegno apparatus and the implied approach which, it is suggested, provides teachers with a complete and satisfactory answer to these four themes.

Abstract

The role of a school principal has changed dramatically in the last decade and there has been widespread concern regarding the impact of this change of role on principal health and wellbeing. Worksite health promotion programs have been used in many different settings to encourage employee health, but there is very little information on the effectiveness of such programs, particularly in improving principal health. This study evaluated the impact of a 12‐month health promotion program on a group of 50 volunteer principals. Participants in the program reported improvements in their diet and exercise habits and this was reflected in improvements in blood pressure, cholesterol and body fat measures. These results indicate that worksite health promotion can play a significant role in improving the health and wellbeing of school principals.

Abstract

Purpose

This purpose of this paper is to introduce innovative ways to design, develop and implement original learning experiences, by defining certain design elements with illustrative vignettes from the classrooms of teacher pioneers.

Design/methodology/approach

A new rubric of design elements is presented that synthesizes and illustrates theoretical and empirical research.

Findings

Teacher pioneers implement instructional design elements in a manner that supports the subordination of teaching to learning in their classrooms.

Practical implications

The rubric organizes criteria to design, implement, analyze and evaluate the extent to which instructional resources and approaches, at all levels and in all content areas, are likely to foster learners’ independence, autonomy and responsibility.

Originality/value

This paper provides a useful, concise and clearly explained rubric of design elements that, when most effectively implemented, can prepare students to meet, with enthusiasm and confidence, whatever comes their way.

Abstract

In recent years responsibility for the administration of schools internationally has shifted from education departments towards self‐governing schools. This trend has resulted in major changes to the role of school principals. Such changes in role may impact on the psychological and physical health of principals, but there has been very little research into this population. A survey of the health and wellbeing of a representative sample of 50 principals of State primary schools in Victoria, Australia is reported. Subjects completed questionnaires measuring health‐related behaviour and stress and arousal levels and participated in comprehensive health appraisals. Principals reported better smoking patterns than the population as a whole. Despite a higher socioeconomic status than the population as a whole, the health status of the principals was not apparently better. Principals reported higher stress levels and worse physical health than a group of white‐collar employees of similar socioeconomic status.

Abstract

Purpose

Porous titanium is used in many bioimplant and electrode applications because of its interconnected pore structure and good corrosion resistance. The purpose of this paper is to study the anodic polarization behavior of porous titanium in different electrolytes and clarify the influences of the porosity and macro‐pore size on the corrosion resistance.

Design/methodology/approach

The porous titanium with 10‐70% porosities and average macro‐pore sizes in the range of 100‐500 μm was prepared by the powder metallurgy method using polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) as a space holder. Electrochemical corrosion tests were performed on porous titanium as well as solid titanium (with the same irregular and isolated micro‐pore structures as that on the interconnected spheroidal macro‐pore walls of porous titanium) in the 0.1 M H2SO4, 1 M NaOH and 0.9% NaCl (37 °C) solutions.

Findings

It was found that porous titanium exhibited an active‐passive transition behavior in the 1 M NaOH and 0.1 M H2SO4 solutions. In contrast, a self‐passivation transition behavior was observed in the 0.9% NaCl solution (37 °C).

Originality/value

The paper demonstrates that both the porosity and macro‐pore size of porous titanium play an important role in determining the corrosion rate, rather than the corrosion potential.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to examine how an enabling management control system (MCS) affected intellectual capital (IC) development in an organisation. The study explores the effect of a change from a coercive to an enabling control system on situated learning and the development of IC.

Design/methodology/approach

A case study was conducted in a large manufacturing organisation to explore the effect of a redesigned MCS on IC development. Semi-structured interviews were used to elicit understanding of the effect of the new system on situated learning and valuable local knowledge and relationship development.

Findings

The enabling way in which the MCS was designed introduced empowerment and accountability for financial and operational performance at all levels of the organisational hierarchy, which stimulated situated learning in a way that developed the organisation’s IC.

Originality/value

New insight is provided into the way management accounting practice can deliver valuable outcomes to organisations. First, into how MCSs design can stimulate the development of valuable local knowledge and relationships as IC. Second, into how MCS design can affect non-management employees. While prior studies have focussed on managers, this research is novel in showing how enabling controls affect non-management employees.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present an analytical method through which a political analysis of intra and inter-organizational conflicts may be conducted.

Design/methodology/approach

The iterative method of data analysis the paper presents is based on a consolidation of work using Laclau and Mouffe’s discourse theory across both management and organization and social science disciplinary domains.

Findings

While the politically orientated discourse theory of Laclau and Mouffe has begun to be used by management and organization researchers, little guidance is available for how to actually conduct the analysis of data using this discourse approach. The method the paper proposes involves making explicit an analytical process for reading available textual data.

Originality/value

The value of this paper is primarily for management and organization researchers who are attracted to discourse theory but feel intimidated or confused about how to operationalize this theory into data analytic practice.

Abstract

Purpose)

In this study, for the first time, the efficacy of control rods for full suppression of vortex-induced vibrations (VIV) and galloping of an elastically supported rigid square cylinder that vibrates freely in the cross-flow direction is investigated.

Design/methodology/approach

To this aim, two small control rods are placed at constant angles of ± 45° relative to the horizontal axis and then the influence of diameter and spacing ratios on the oscillation and hydrodynamic response along with the vortex structure behind the cylinder is evaluated in the form of nine different cases in both VIV and galloping regions.

Findings

The performed simulations show that using the configuration presented in this study results in full VIV suppression for the spacing ratios G/D = 0.5, 1 and 1.5 at the diameter ratios d/D = 0.1, 0.2 and 0.3 (D: diameter of square cylinder, G: distance between rods and cylinder, d: diameter of rods). On the contrary, a perfect attenuation of galloping is only achieved at the largest diameter (d/D = 0.3) and the smallest spacing ratio (G/D = 0.5). In general, for both VIV and galloping regions, with increasing diameter ratio and decreasing spacing ratio, the effect of the control rods wake in the vortex street of square cylinder gradually increases. This trend carries on to the point where the vortex shedding is completely suppressed and only the symmetric wake of control rods is observed.

Originality/value

So far, the effect of rod control on VIV of a square cylinder and its amplitude of oscillations has not been investigated.

Abstract

Reviews the inherent advantages, i.e. design flexibility and processing, of manufacturing piezoelectric ceramics and composites with numerous architectures via rapid prototyping techniques. Reports on processing in which piezoelectric ceramics and composites with novel and conventional designs were fabricated using rapid prototyping techniques. Fused deposition of ceramics, fused deposition modeling, and Sanders prototyping techniques were used to fabricate lead‐zirconate‐titanate ceramics and ceramic/polymer composites via, first, direct fabrication and, second, indirect fabrication using either lost mold or soft tooling techniques.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to apply a computer-aided engineering approach in order to improve the performance and the reliability of an innovative internal combustion engine. The engine is called twin engine packs system and it consists into the presence of two independent piston engines working in the same crankcase, thus allowing the helicopter to meet the safety standards of the fail-safe design approach, as happens with the twin-turbine helicopters, but with reduced operative costs. The goal is to propose to the designers modifications aimed to improve the performance of the components.

Design/methodology/approach

The crankshaft, connecting rod and the piston of the engine have been investigated by means of numerical FE models. Numerical fatigue assessments have been performed along with vibrational modes and buckling analysis in order to verify the structural integrity of the system.

Findings

On the basis of the numerical results, some modifications have been proposed to the designers and the originally proposed geometry has been modified. Eventually, the mass of the engine has been reduced keeping a high reliability level.

Practical implications

The prototype of the engine has been built following the modifications proposed in this paper. This paper represents a comprehensive application of a CAE methodology to a real industrial application.

Originality/value

This paper shows a complete CAE procedure applied to a real working engine whose performances and reliability have been improved by following the findings of this paper.
