Abstract

McDonnell Douglas Aerospace has successfully demonstrated the manned tactical reconnaissance capability of the F‐15 Eagle. During a recent flight, a variety of high resolution tactical images were obtained proving the airframe's compatibility with electro‐optical linear array‐type reconnaissance systems.

Abstract

An adaptable, integrated full glass cockpit and flight management system has been developed and is in production for application in multiple Sikorsky rotorcraft. The entire system was conceived, designed, tested and delivered in an unusually short time period. A systematic process was used to define the avionics system attributes, major capabilities, and cost targets up‐front and track them during the development program. First flight was achieved 12 months after contract start, and production deliveries commenced 5 months after first flight. The integrated glass cockpit has accumulated more than 9,000 flight hours in customer operations to date. This flexible system architecture allowed the team of Sikorsky and Rockwell Collins to reuse several blocks of existing military and civil application software, and to interface the various Avionics subsystems using industry standards. This proved to be a critical factor in allowing us to meet the compressed design and development schedule.

Abstract

Rockwell Automation's Allen-Bradley division was considering how to deal with the threat posed by national distributors in the maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) business for its industrial automation products. National distributors were consolidating the MRO distribution channel, offering national account customers an integrated multichannel solution for their MRO needs. Allen-Bradley had traditionally served its customers through high-touch, high-value-added local distributors, but this channel was inadequate for the demands of large MRO customers. An effort by Allen-Bradley and other manufacturers to create an industry-wide electronic sourcing consortium called SourceAlliance.com had failed. Now the company had to choose between redesigning its traditional channel by creating a virtual network of local distributors, striking an alliance with a national distributor, or withdrawing from the MRO market. It had to contend with difficult channel conflict issues in choosing a channel strategy.

To analyze the competitive strategy of a company serving the MRO market.

Abstract

There is at present much industry activity related to solderability testing. Test methods, test parameters, and accelerated ageing conditions are among the items being studied, but the bulk of the activity relates to component terminations, and not to printed wiring boards (PWBs). At Rockwell International's Collins Defense Communications, test programmes related to PWB ageing and solderability have been ongoing for several years. Data from natural ageing and from a variety of accelerated test methods have been compared. Results from several solderability test methods have also been compared. Recommendations are made for an accelerated ageing method and for solderability testing of PWBs.

Abstract

The paper presents the results of extensive studies on circuit board solderability comparing wetting balance and IPC test methods through performance in vapour phase and wave soldering operations. The effects on solderability of key parameters are examined and compared with storage times of one year, and accelerated ageing using damp heat, dry heat and steam oxygen. An evaluation is made of tin‐lead alloys from 40/60 to 70/30 in solder coating thicknesses from 0·1 to 1·0 mil.
