Abstract

Sales and purchases of socially and environmentally responsible festival clothing are a way for festival attendees to engage in ethical consumption and for event organizers to undertake sustainable procurement. Although there have been a number of studies examining willingness-to-pay (WTP), few of them examine this in a festival setting, and there is a gap in existing research regarding the determination of actual behavior. The goal of this study is therefore to explore participants’ willingness-to-pay for apparel based on more external motivations (visible environmental messages) and then ascertain whether this behavior was actually replicated in a natural field setting. This study first collected surveys from 427 festival-goers in 2015, then used a natural field experiment in 2016 to investigate whether attendees at the Mariposa Folk Festival in Ontario, Canada, would actually be prepared to pay a premium for ethical festival T-shirts over a conventional alternative. The findings reveal that attendees not only showed a willingness-to-pay but they also did actually pay a premium for such T-shirts.

Abstract

We report with regret the resignation of Miss E. M. R. Ditmas from the editorship of both Aslib Proceedings and the Journal of Documentation. This is the last issue of Aslib Proceedings that will appear under Miss Ditmas's editorship and she will no longer be Managing Editor of the Journal of Documentation after publication of the June 1962 issue. Miss Ditmas, who was Director of Aslib until 1950, is resigning in order to be able to devote more time to her own research work and writing. Aslib would like to record its deep appreciation of the excellent work which Miss Ditmas has done to establish and uphold the standard of both these periodicals since their first appearance.

Abstract

COST AND EFFICIENCY. The economics of corrosion, like the economics of society, is a matter of continuous debate. In any attempt to cost the effects of corrosion and anti‐corrosion measures what criterion should be selected as the most important? The extent of damage due to corrosion; the cost of applying protection; the probable extent of damage had protection measures not been applied? These, and other factors, have all to be taken into account before any rational approach to the problem can be made. It is a matter of regret that, in this country at least, there has been no real systematic study of the corrosion problem with a view to establishing valid criteria for costing corrosion and anti‐corrosion procedures in industry.

Abstract

The HISTORY OF THE VACUUM OIL COMPANY'S OIL BLENDING AND GREASE PLANT AT BIRKENHEAD has been one of construction, development and disaster. A warehouse was established there in 1902 and this was burned down in 1910 when a new works was built. This new works included a grease plant and blending facilities and it was extensively developed until by 1939 it was one of the largest and most important blending units of its kind in Europe. But, two years later, nearly all its buildings and manufacturing equipment were destroyed or damaged by enemy action. Work, however, proceeded immediately, since it was then that lubricants were so essential to the country's war needs, and a temporary plant was erected.

Abstract

As the Communist influence in the world subsides, the threat of low‐intensity conflict increasingly becomes a major concern to those involved in maintaining world security and peace. The fall of the Berlin Wall and the collapse of the Soviet Union have been accompanied by shifts in alignments, the emergence of old conflicts and new tensions, and an increase in Third World agitation. These events all serve to create these low‐intensity conflicts, which may take the form of guerrilla warfare, coups d'etat, ethnic violence, terrorism, resistance movements, or insurgency. Terrorism by itself is the objective of many forms of violence prevalent in today's world, including drug‐related incidents and incidents involving street gangs, hate groups, violent activists, and separatist organizations, as well as state‐sponsored actions in places such as Central and South America, the Middle East, and Libya. Conflict within areas may create situations that have far‐reaching consequences.
