Students with extensive supports needs (ESN) often require pervasive and intensive supports to access the full benefits of educational programming. In this chapter, the authors describe the application of both established and innovative technologies for promoting equitable access and opportunity for these students. They provide guidance for the use of technology across the areas of academic instruction, social communication, behavior supports, daily living, and employment.

Abstract

Purpose

Crisis management has developed as an established field of scholarly research in tourism over the last three decades. More recently, the concept of resilience has emerged within this body of literature as a longer-term planning process. However, important knowledge gaps remain, especially with regards to the strategic responses of small tourism businesses in destinations prone to repeated crises.

Design/methodology/approach

This chapter reviews the literature related to crisis management and resilience in tourism.

Findings

Key knowledge gaps are outlined and discussed in the context of tourism research related to crisis management and resilience, with a specific emphasis on research related to small tourism businesses.

Originality

Although crisis management and resilience are fields of research that continue to generate a considerable amount of scholarly enquiry in tourism, particularly with studies related to the impacts of terrorism on tourism destinations and, more recently, the short- and longer-term impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on tourism, there is very little research related to the role of small tourism businesses in this context, in spite of their key role in the tourism system of destinations around the world.

Abstract

For the past several years corporate America has reported anemic earnings, yet Dun & Bradstreet has merrily continued to record 15 percent earnings increases. Making money in good times and bad by supplying information services to business, D & B has become a darling of institutional investors and a “Nifty Fifty” New York Stock Exhange company. To find out more about how the money machine works, we interviewed Chief Operating Officer Robert E. Weissman, a very youthful forty‐six year old who loves to talk about strategic management. Senior editor Malcom Pennington, president of the Marketing and Planning Group, Inc., was co‐interviewer. Thanks are also due INVESTEXT, which supplied the company analysis we used to formulate many of our questions. Samples of security analysts' reports provided by INVESTEXT appear in the boxes that accompany the interview.

Abstract

The tourism sector is one of the fastest growing sectors in recent years according to the World Tourism Organization. In recent years, there have been an increasing number of disasters and crises. There are many factors affecting the tourism sector, from natural events to human impact. Tourism sector has suffered great damage from national and global crises. The Gulf War in 1991, the tsunami disaster in 2004, the global economic crisis in 2009 and the pandemic in 2019 can be given as examples of events that negatively affected tourism. The tourism sector in the world has faced the pandemic, which is the biggest global shock in recent times. This situation reinforces the need for tourism businesses and stakeholders to be prepared for crisis and pandemic. With the globalization of the tourism industry and the world becoming more interdependent and interconnected, it is a fact that crises occurring in one part of the world can affect tourism activities in a wider area or worldwide. Since tourism is not at the top of peoples list of needs, it is one of the first plans that tourists will change and cancel as soon as they perceive a threat to themselves. Therefore, the tourism sector is highly sensitive to crises and pandemics. In the face of crisis sensitivity, the tourism sector is also very skillful in eliminating the effects of the crisis as soon as possible. In this study, the impact of crisis and pandemic on the destination in the tourism sector will be explained with examples from some crisis and pandemic cases, and the requirements of tourism enterprises for crisis and pandemic preparedness will be underlined.

Abstract

In a previous monograph a discussion took place on stages one and part of stage two of the three stage process in an unfair dismissal action, namely the employee having to show that he has been dismissed (stage one), and some of the reasons for dismissal which fall within the statutory categories, namely the employee's capability and qualifications; misconduct and redundancy (part of stage two). In this monograph an analysis is proposed on the two remaining reasons, these being the contravention of a duty imposed by an enactment and some other substantial reason. There will then follow a discussion on the test of fairness as constituting the third of the three stage process and on the remedies available when the tribunal finds that the employee has been unfairly dismissed.

Abstract

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has initiated policies and legal challenges that have shaped the evolution of competition in healthcare. This chapter discusses not only discusses the current matters in healthcare competition, but it also gives a history of past issues faced by the FTC and the approaches used to resolve them. These FTC actions range from challenges to hospital mergers to preventing “reverse payments” from patent holders to generic entrants in pharmaceuticals. Ultimately the healthcare industry faces many unique regulatory and competitive aspects that, while challenging, do not require special rules.

Abstract

Blues music is in the midst of its second revival in popularity in roughly thirty years. The year 1960 can be identified, with some qualification, as a reference point for the first rise in international awareness and appreciation of the blues. This first period of wide‐spread white interest in the blues continued until the early seventies, while the current revival began in the middle 1980s. During both periods a sizeable literature on the blues has appeared. This article provides a thumbnail sketch of the popularity of the blues, followed by a description of scholarly and critical literature devoted to the music. Documentary and instructional materials in audio and video formats are also discussed. Recommendations are made for library collections and a list of selected sources is included at the end of the article.
