Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to analyse how the economic impact of wine in producing regions can be measured. It also seeks to show the relationship between wine cluster performance and regional economic development, through the study of Rioja's recent success in both wine market and distribution of wealth.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper uses the input‐output analyses to estimate the economic impact of the wine cluster and its role in regional economy. The case of Rioja is taken as example of regions where wine is the driving economic force.

Findings

The paper finds that Rioja wine cluster specificities may be the cause of the recent outperformance of Riojan economy, in which the wine cluster accounts for a fifth of regional GDP. The increase in wine sales in this region is simultaneous to the spread of welfare among the local population.

Originality/value

The paper shows the extremely deep impact that changes in wine market may arise in wine producing regions' welfare, thus enabling wine sector's main actors to measure wine impact on regional economy.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to focus on two basic dimensions of group work: cooperation and transfer of information. This paper has two objectives. The first objective is to analyse the effect of cooperation and transfer of information in group work according to employees’ perceptions of the Rioja wine industry. The second objective is to analyse the existence of significant differences in the perception of the basic dimensions of group work under different organisational contexts in the Rioja wine industry.

Design/methodology/approach

The participants in the study are 230 workers from the Rioja wine industry. The data is collected through a personal interview using a questionnaire. Hypotheses are tested by multiple regression analysis.

Findings

The results indicate firstly that cooperation and transfer of information is related to “group work” variable positively, and secondly, significant differences were found in each of the contexts analysed. Besides, it has been found that the variable “transfer of information” is more explanatory of group work differences in organisational contexts than the variable “cooperation”.

Originality/value

This study verified that there is no homogeneity in group work in the Rioja wine industry. This study contributes to the knowledge about a significant industry of the economy and culture of the Rioja region, and the wine sector in general.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to describe the role of training demand in the organisational changes.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper describes the demand of training courses in the Rioja wine sector in Spain and its relation with the changes in the sector carried out in recent years. Through a questionnaire, wineries’ managers asked about the training demand in the sector and change processes. It is proposed, first, the relationship between the demand for training and changes made by companies of Rioja wine in entering new markets and innovation in products and, second, that these changes explain the demand of training in marketing and oenology topics. To confirm the hypotheses, a binary logistic regression analysis was performed.

Findings

It was found that the relationship between the demand for training and the processes of change, and that the change processes in companies of Rioja wine sector originate a specific demand for training.

Practical implications

The paper provides a review of the importance of training in changes processes of companies. A critical factor in the change process is the development of workers competencies to cope with the changes in the organisation, but it is also important to develop a culture of change in the organisation.

Originality/value

This paper provides empirical evidence of the relationship between organisational changes and training demands in a key sector from the Rioja Community in Spain.

Abstract

Purpose

The present study aims to provide new evidence regarding the factors that determine the survival of firms in the Spanish wine industry and to improve the understanding of sector dynamics.

Design/methodology/approach

The empirical analysis, conducted over a representative sample of wineries in the DOC Rioja wine industry, is based on non-parametric (Kaplan–Meier graph) and semi-parametric survival models (Cox proportional hazard model).

Findings

The empirical model finds that wineries with a higher number of networks with institutions enjoy better survival prospects. This study also shows that a winery’s previous performance affects the winery’s survival probability; therefore, successful wineries in the past encounter a smaller hazard of exit. Although spending on R&D and exporting are factors likely to improve wineries' efficiency and competitiveness, these factors did not contribute significantly to the survival of DOC Rioja wineries.

Originality/value

This paper makes a significant contribution to the understanding of the determinants of wineries' survival and has important policy implications. In order to raise the probability of survival, policy makers should promote the networks that link wineries and institutions. Moreover, this study is based on survival analysis which, although frequently used in medical and behavioural sciences, has rarely been applied to wine economics. Finally, it uses a unique data set obtained from primary data collection, which previous studies have not analysed in relation to the probability of winery survival.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to analyse the rewards for training in the Spanish wine sector.

Design/methodology/approach

Through a questionnaire, Rioja wineries’ employees were asked about the training rewards in the sector. It is addressed different types of rewards (monetary and non-monetary) and contrasted with job category and functions of employees. The hypotheses were confirmed through ANOVA.

Findings

In the theoretical section, the importance of the learning environment is discussed. The development of a learning environment promotes workplace learning. Empirically, there are no significant differences in the effects on perceptions between rewards tied to training, the job category or job function of the employees in the company.

Originality/value

The importance of rewards as tools to moderate the behaviour of employees is discussed. It is found that the employees’ position in the company is not related to the type of training reward.

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to analyse the relationship between learning processes (LP) – group learning (GL) and training processes – and job satisfaction (JS), by taking into consideration the mediating role of organizational size (OZ) and employees’ educational level (EEL).

Design/methodology/approach

Data were collected from the Spanish wine sector. The survey was addressed to the workers, and 230 valid questionnaires were obtained. The authors have proven their model of research through a model of structural equations, that is, by means of the partial least squares technique.

Findings

This paper proposes that LP play a significant role in determining the effects on JS, and OZ and EEL mediate the relationship between GL and JS.

Research limitations/implications

Owing to certain features of the sample and the use of measurement scales, the final results should be considered with caution. Further research in other contexts using qualitative methods is needed to validate these findings.

Practical implications

When seeking to improve employee JS, practitioners should take into account the link between LP and JS. It is especially necessary to consider the diversity in learning groups.

Originality/value

This paper provides an empirical analysis of the relationship between LP and JS and checks the mediation of OZ and worker education of workers between group learning and JS.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to analyse the impact of organizational learning culture and learning facilitators in group learning.

Design/methodology/approach

This study was conducted using a survey method applied to a statistically representative sample of employees from Rioja wine companies in Spain. A model was tested using a structural equation model.

Findings

Statistical evidences suggest that both the learning culture and facilitators of group learning impact positively on group learning. In addition, it was found that the facilitation of learning has a positive influence on the learning culture.

Practical implications

From the paper, two sets of implications are extracted. The first is related to learning in the workplace – the importance of facilitating learning in group learning is emphasized. The second set refers to human resources development: organizational commitment to the development of informal learning is highlighted.

Originality/value

The paper explores the concept of learning culture and how it relates to the development of group learning, and an important system in the workplace is implemented.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to conduct a systematic literature review (SLR) to identify the main firm-level performance indicators and group them in dimensions that support decision-making in the wine industry.

Design/methodology/approach

To achieve this goal, an SLR approach was conducted in the Scopus database from 2009 to 2019. From a set of 607 articles, only 25 studies related to firm-level performance indicators were considered and, following an inductive thematic analysis and an interpretative synthesis, separated into different specific foci that include social, economic and environmental dimensions.

Findings

There is a limited number of papers identifying indicators regarding the firm-level performance of wine firms, and even fewer studies including indicators on an integrated approach to measure the different dimensions of firm performance. This paper documents that economic and environmental indicators cover 78.2% of all SLR indicators analyzed. As this group of indicators is limited to a set of sub-dimensions, this paper found that several groups of indicators are misrepresented, such as product portfolio or certifications related to marketing activities and indicators covering purchasing and supply chain activities, which play a crucial role in the competitiveness of the wine industry.

Practical implications

For practitioners, it discloses the most pertinent indicators they need to improve to craft their business strategies. This framework is of added value for policymakers to customize their support programs for specific producers to develop their competitive strategies. It could be deployed in teaching programs as a tool to address the importance of aligning different types of indicators to achieve firm-level performance in the wine industry.

Originality/value

This study contributes to the literature identifying a framework of analysis that includes indicators of four dimensions, namely, economic, social, territorial and environmental. This framework aims to relate performance measures to corporate strategy as a management control tool. The framework intends to improve the fit between firms’ activities and their competitive context and to be flexibly adapted to various products/firms in the wine industry.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to analyse the impact of the processes of orientation and empowerment and the transfer of information in the learning culture.

Design/methodology/approach

The first hypothesis predicts that information mediates the relationship between orientation and empowerment processes and learning culture and the second hypothesis suggests that organisational size moderates the relationships between constructs. The empirical work is conducted in the wine industry in Spain through a structural equation analysis, partial least squares.

Findings

The hypothesis of mediation is confirmed; however, the hypothesis about size moderation is not confirmed.

Practical implications

The importance of the transfer of information in the foundation of a learning culture is highlighted and, therefore, its importance in the development of learning in organisations, especially in building learning organisations.

Originality/value

This research contributes to the literature on learning in organisations by sharing not only the characteristics that identify a learning culture, but also the mechanisms or processes through which a learning culture can be developed.

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate if shared brands provide sustainable competitive advantage according to an adapted valuable, rare, imitability/replaceability and organization (VRIO) model to the Brazilian wine sector in the opinion of the government agencies, associations and managers of the wineries.

Design/methodology/approach

This study was based on a qualitative and exploratory research, based on in-depth interviews. Fine wines that have geographical indications and are located in the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul were analyzed and content analysis was used to explore data.

Findings

It was concluded that shared brands in the Brazilian wine sector can be considered a source of sustainable competitive advantage according to the resource-based view.

Research limitations/implications

Qualitative research has the aspect of the subjectivity of the researcher when analyzing the data.

Practical implications

The government agencies, associations and wineries can improve the production process and seek certified products for commercialization in the domestic and foreign markets. These contributions may also, in practice, be used by other sectors and countries.

Originality/value

This work contributes to the understanding of the shared brand’s concept, including geographical indications, collective brands and the sector brands. The proposition that shared brands provide sustainable competitive advantage, according to an adapted VRIO model was confirmed. Barney’s VRIO framework (Barney, 1991, 1995) hitherto thought for individual companies, has the letter “O” of Organization replaced by the letter “A” of Association, becoming VRIA. The authors found that the four conditions that form the here proposed acronym VRIA are valuable, rare, imperfectly imitable/replaceable and association.
