Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to study the dimensional characteristics such as fabric density variations, dimensional constant parameters, linear and area dimensional changes and spirality angle variations of 1 × 1 rib knitted structures made from cotton‐spandex core spun yarns, under laundering regimes till 10th washing cycle.

Design/methodology/approach

Samples of the above fabrics underwent dry, wet and full relaxation treatments and were subjected to standard atmospheric conditions prior to take the measurements. Washing was done in a front loading machine under normal agitation with machine 56 RPM. Each washing regime includes wash, rinse, spin, tumble dry steps. Washing temperature was set at 40°C and water intake for washing was 30 l and rinsed with cold water. 0.1 g/l standard wetting agent was used. The mass of the load was maintained constant to 3 kg to keep the material ratio as 1:10. Washing regimes were continued till 10th cycle.

Findings

Cotton‐spandex rib structures came to a more stable state (minimum energy state) after 10th laundering cycle under the experimental conditions. Cotton did not come to such a state, even after 10th cycle proceeded. ANOVA analysis done under 95 percent confidential level has shown that fabric tightness and relaxation procedures give significant effect on dimensional characteristics of cotton‐spandex and cotton rib structures. However, area shrinkage variations of cotton rib fabrics have shown an exception to this.

Research limitations/implications

According to the dimensional constant values, evenafter 10th washing cycle, cotton rib structures did not come to a stable position. This should be further investigated to achieve a better stable rib knitted structure.

Practical implications

The number of washing cycles can be increased or tumble dry duration can be increased to 120 min. to get a more stable state of cotton rib structures.

Originality/value

The results are important for the knitting industry to predict the dimensional behavior of designed knitted fabric under relaxation. These data can be used to set the circular machine parameters to achieve a more stable fabric after laundering.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this research is working out of a new forming technology of flat parts with ribs from magnesium alloys with the application of a three-slide forging press (TSFP) for the aircraft industry.

Design/methodology/approach

New possibilities of forming aviation parts with ribs gives the application of a prototype TSFP. This press consists of three moveable tools and has wider technological possibilities than typical forging machines. It was assumed that this machine (press) application would allow for obtaining ribbed flat forgings from magnesium alloys of good functional and resistance qualities. A characteristic feature of such forgings forming is the working movement of two side tools, which upset the billet in the form of a plate; the result of their action is forming of one or more ribs in the plane central part. It is possible to use the upper punch to form appropriate rib outline. Theoretical research works based on simulations by means of finite element method were conducted for three cases of the process: semi-free forging of parts with one rib, semi-free forming of forgings with two ribs and forging in closed impression of parts with one rib of triangular outline. The first experimental tests were made on a TSFP for the variant of semi-free forging of parts with one rib.

Findings

Research results show that there exists the possibility of realization of forming process of parts with ribs according to the conception assumed by the authors. Positive results of theoretical analyses justify the purposefulness of conducting experimental verification for the proposed theoretical solutions of the forging processes of parts with one rib of triangular outline and with two ribs.

Practical implications

Production of flat parts with ribs from magnesium alloys basing on the worked out by the authors’ technology will allow for improving functional and mechanical properties of parts and for lowering their manufacturing costs. At present, such aviation parts are imported to Poland in the form of casts, which are expensive and not always fulfill the requirements. Additionally, large amount of machining at manufacturing of this type of parts generate larger price at their production.

Originality/value

Forging technology of parts with ribs in a TSFP is unique on a world scale. The advantages of this technology are the process material savings and better resistance properties of the formed forgings with ribs than parts obtained in a traditional way.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims at discovering the traditional techniques of Persian architecture for covering large-span spaces with a kind of ribbed vault titled “Karbandi”. This structure is generated by intersecting several arches with a harmonic stellar geometry. Preliminary studies show that span factor affects the structural form of karbandi and large-span cases, despite similar architectural forms, have different structural systems and specific construction methods. The main focus of this paper is how karbandi has been designed and built on large-spans. To answer this question, the configuration and construction of a large-span karbandi in Tabriz Bazaar were recognized.

Design/methodology/approach

Data collection of the research was initially done in three parallel directions through the archival study of restoration documents, direct observation of the corpus of the vaultings and interviews with the master mason of the Haj-Mohammad-Qoli Timche restoration team. Then by cross-referencing the gathered data, the construction process of the karbandi was simulated in Rhino 6 and Grasshoppers software and its BIM-M models were created in three levels of development: LOD300, LOD350 and LOD400. In the next step, the preliminary BIM-M models of the karbandi were presented to the interviewed mason and revised and completed based on his comments.

Findings

Analyzing the BIM models by reverse engineering, resulted in (1) Discovering a unique self-supporting masonry construction method applied for the erection of karbandi vaulting on large-spans. (2) Finding the effect of scale factor on the architectural and structural form of the karbandi vault. (3) Discovering the connection types of the karbandi vault based on the construction details.

Originality/value

Despite the wide applications of karbandi vaults throughout history, very little information of their construction techniques is available. The techniques have mostly been experientially and orally passed down from masters to apprentices and rarely been documented. The quest to design and construct a karbandi vault is therefore like solving a puzzle whose most important guide is historical cases. Due to the geometric complexity of karbandi and its ability to cover large-span spaces, solving the puzzle can lead to achieving some technical ideas for masonry cross-ribbed vaulting. A great riddle of the karbandi vaults is how to design and build them on a large span.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to present a method for predicting dimensional variation in assembly processes of a wingbox structure concentrating on the assembly of skin panels to rib feet.

Design/methodology/approach

Finite element modelling and experimental tests are conducted on the rib structure based on the site measurement gathered from the Airbus assembly factory.

Findings

The results have shown that the simulated model has the capability of predicting to an acceptable degree of accuracy the overall geometrical variations of the ribs and skin panels, as well as the positional variations of each individual rib foot.

Originality/value

The authors believe that no previous research has offered a similar prediction method for large aerostructures.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to study the flow and heat transfer characteristics of microchannel heatsinks with ribs, cavities and secondary channels. The influence of length and width of the ribs on heat transfer enhancement, secondary flows, flow distribution and temperature distribution are examined at different Reynolds numbers. The effectiveness of each heatsink is evaluated using the performance factor.

Design/methodology/approach

A three-dimensional solid-fluid conjugate heat transfer numerical model is used to study the flow and heat transfer characteristics in microchannels. One symmetrical channel is adopted for the simulation to reduce the computational cost and time. Flow inside the channels is assumed to be single-phase and laminar. The governing equations are solved using finite volume method.

Findings

The numerical results are analyzed in terms of average Nusselt number ratio, average base temperature, friction factor ratio, pressure variation inside the channel, temperature distribution, velocity distribution inside the channel, mass flow rate distribution inside the secondary channels and performance factor of each microchannels. Results indicate that impact of rib width is higher in enhancing the heat transfer when compared with its length but with a penalty on the pressure drop. The combined effects of secondary channels, ribs and cavities helps to lower the temperature of the microchannel heat sink and enhances the heat transfer rate.

Practical implications

The fabrication of microchannels are complex, but recent advancements in the additive manufacturing techniques makes the fabrication of the design considered in this numerical study feasible.

Originality/value

The proposed microchannel heatsink can be used in practical applications to reduce the thermal resistance, and it augments the heat transfer rate when compared with the baseline design.

Abstract

Purpose

Use of packed beds, enhanced tubes, nano-fluids and artificial ribs are few passive techniques to increase heat transfer in solar air heaters (SAHs). Artificial ribs attached to the absorber plate of the SAH will enhance the turbulence near the plate. Experimental analyses are conducted to find the thermal performance of SAH with ribs of regular geometries including rectangular, semi-circular and triangular in cross section. This paper aims to present the improvement in thermal performance of SAH with modified-arc.

Design/methodology/approach

Absorber plates are designed with ribs of rectangular, triangular, semi-circular and modified-arc in cross-section using existing data in literature. Physical dimensions of the ribs are designed by adapting procedure from literature. Absorber plates are manufactured with ribs and coated with blackboard paint and fixed to the existing SAH. Experiments are conducted with a variable-speed blower fixed to the inlet section of the SAH, which is used to supply air at different mass flow rates in a range between 0.495 and 0.557 kg/min.

Findings

Efficiency is found to be a strong function of mass flow rate of air through the SAH from the present experimental investigations. It was found that use of modified-arc ribs enhanced the efficiency of SAH by 105.35 per cent compared to SAH with plane absorber plate. Efficiency of SAH with modified-arc ribs is found to be higher by 24.43, 45.61 and 63.21 per cent, respectively, for SAH with semi-circular, rectangular and triangular arc ribs on its absorber plate.

Research limitations/implications

Experiments on SAH are conducted during daytime from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm in open atmospheric conditions. Solar intensity is continuously changing during the experimentation from morning to evening. Calculations are made based on the observations with average values of solar intensity and temperature readings. More accurate values of SAH efficiency can be obtained with constant heat supply to the absorber plate by simulating the experimental setup in indoor conditions. Temperature and flow rate observations could be more accurate with sophisticated instrumentation rather than using simple thermocouples and orifice meters.

Social implications

SAHs are basically used to supply hot air for both rural and industrial applications. These are used for crop drying, preheating of air, removal of moisture from leather, chemicals, etc. Conventionally, formers in India are using open sun drying to remove moisture from agricultural products. In this method, the moisture can be removed up to a level of 20 to 25 per cent. Use of SAH can remove moisture up to below 5 per cent and process is clean without reducing the quality of agricultural products. Enhancing the efficiency of SAHs will surely increase its usage by formers for crop drying.

Originality/value

Use of artificial ribs on absorber plate of SAH is most economical among many of the active and passive techniques. Numerical and experimental investigations are found in literature with regular cross-sectional ribs, including rectangular, triangular and semi-circular. The present work proposed new shape of the ribs named as modified-arc, which was not presented in the literature. Experimental analysis proved that the use of modified-arc makes the SAH more efficient in heat transfer.

Abstract

A numerical investigation to determine the velocity and heat transfer characteristics of multiple impinging slot jets in rib‐roughened channels in the presence of cross‐flow has been carried out. Fluid flow is modeled using an explicit algebraic stress model. A simple eddy diffusivity and a generalized gradient diffusion hypothesis are applied for the modeling of turbulent heat fluxes. The computations are validated against available experimental fluid flow and heat transfer data. Different size and arrangement of jets and ribs are considered in detail, while the Reynolds numbers of a jet and the channel inlet are fixed at 6,000 and 14,000, respectively. Results show that the ratio (B/W) between the size of the jets and ribs is most important. An explanation is that the ribs inhibit the motion of eddies by preventing them from coming very close to the surface when B/W is low, e.g. B/W = 1, although the ribs will increase the turbulence intensity. This blockage limited the heat transfer enhancement effect of the ribs and impinging jets.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to explore the basic loading state in local loading forming process of large-sized complicated rib-web component, which is important for understanding process characteristic, controlling metal flow and designing preformed geometry of the local loading forming process. Moreover the analytical models for different loading states are established to quickly predict the metal flow.

Design/methodology/approach

Through analysis of geometric characteristic of large-sized complicated rib-web component and the deformation characteristic on planes of metal flow by local loading method, a representative cross-section is put forward and designed, which could reflect the local loading forming characteristics of large-sized complicated rib-web component. Finite element method (FEM) is used to analyze the stress and metal flow, and the analytical models of metal flow are established by using slab method (SM).

Findings

Three local loading states and one whole loading state are found in the local loading forming process of representative cross-section. Further, four loading states also exist in local loading forming process of large-sized complicated rib-web components. With the metal distribution in the process, some local loading states may turn into whole loading state. For the representative cross-section, the relative error of metal distribution between SM and FEM results is less than 15 per cent, and the relative error of metal in the rib cavity between SM and FEM results is less than 10 per cent.

Originality/value

Metal flow can be controlled by adjusting the loading states in the process. According to the metal flow laws in different loading states, a simple unequal-thickness billet can be designed to achieve initial metal distribution, and then, the secondary metal distribution can be achieved in the process.

Abstract

Purpose

The study aims to focus on rotation effects on a ribbed channel of gas turbine blades for internal cooling. The combination and interaction between secondary flows generated by angled rib geometry and Coriolis forces in the rotating channel are studied numerically.

Design/methodology/approach

A radially outward flow passage as an internal cooling test model with and without ribs is used to perform the investigation. Aspect ratio of the passage is 1:1. Square ribs with e/Dh = 0.1, p/e = 10 and four various rib angles of 90°, 75°, 60° and 45° are configured on both the leading and trailing surfaces along the rotating duct. The study covers a Reynolds number of 10,000 and Rotation number in the range of 0-0.15.

Findings

Nusselt numbers in the ribbed duct are 2.5 to 3.5 times those of a smooth square duct, depending on the Rotation number and rib angle. The maximum value is attained for the 45° ribbed surface. The synergy angle between the velocity and temperature gradients is improved by the angled rib secondary flows and Coriolis vortex. The decrease of the synergy angle is 8.9, 13.4, 12.1 and 10.1 per cent for the 90°, 75°, 60° and 45° ribbed channels with rotation, respectively. Secondary flow intensity is increased by rotation in the 90° and 75° ribbed ducts and is decreased in 45° and 60° ribbed cases for which the rib-induced secondary flow dominates.

Originality/value

The primary motivation behind this work is to investigate the possibility of heat transfer enhancement by vortex flow with developing turbulence in the view point of the field synergy principle and secondary flow intensity.
