Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the behavior of interconnections between solar cells in a glass-free solar modules. As glass weight can be a limitation, it is still interesting to investigate other types of systems, especially when the glass was replaced with a polymeric front sheet. Such systems can be more sensitive for the solar cell interconnection ribbon fatigue.

Design/methodology/approach

To examine this effect, the set of glass-based and glass-free modules were prepared using various ribbon thickness and treatment concerning its stretching or curving before lamination. Furthermore, additional reinforcement of the connection between the ribbon and the solar cell was proposed. The prepared modules were exposed to the cyclic temperature variation in the environment chamber. The number of cycles after which the interconnection maintains its conductivity was noted.

Findings

Changing the outer layers into more elastic ones requires additional care for the ribbon treatment because interconnections become more sensitive for a system relative displacement. To secure interconnection before fatigue an additional curving of ribbon between solar cells can be introduced whereas the best results were obtained for a system with aluminum plate laminated as an interlayer.

Originality/value

The paper presents a new system of a glass-free solar module based on epoxy-glass fiber composite as a backsheet. The glass front sheet was replaced with an elastic, transparent polymer. Such construction can be used in a system where the glass weight is a limitation. As glass has a structural function in traditional modules and limits fatigues of interconnections the proposed system requires additional ribbon treatment to preserve long module life-span.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present a ribbons production route of composition Fe78Si9B13 (%at.) using low cost noncommercial scrap materials to obtain usable magnetic cores by melt spinning technique and their characterization. This way, these may compete with the materials produced by conventional casting processes.

Design/methodology/approach

The methodology is to design a master alloy with scrap different starting compositions, to which Fe is added to get the desired atomic ratio of components. With this starting alloy, using the method of melt spinning, in its variant of chill block melt spinning, are achieved amorphous ribbons with desired soft magnetic behavior. Then these ribbons are thermally treated for achieve nanocrystalline structures to improve the performance in the magnetic cores.

Findings

The result of this paper shows that it is possible to recycle scrap materials, and re-used efficiently as components essential in part of electrical components. This way, these may compete with the materials produced by conventional casting processes.

Research limitations/implications

The limitation of this work to ensure that the scrap materials used is reasonably adequate to accomplish obtaining the master alloy, i.e. having reduced impurities.

Practical implications

The implications are important, because it assures that the components are recyclable and also high-tech in reference to energy saving that involves the production of amorphous and nanocrystalline materials in the electric industry. These products may compete with those produced by conventional casting processes.

Social implications

The social implications lead to awareness in recycling and energy saving as an option for social progress in technology.

Originality/value

The originality of the study is that it takes as a starting point for the final product (ribbon) noncommercial scrap materials of known composition and the obtained results are comparable to those that also are manufactured from the pure elements. The control of impurities is necessary in the production route. This way, these may compete with the materials produced by conventional casting processes. This process achieved a production with lower cost, high efficient energy products and high added value.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to investigate magnetic field anneal in micro-patterned Co-based amorphous ribbon on giant magneto-impedance (GMI) effect enhancement.

Design/methodology/approach

The amorphous ribbons were annealed in transverse and longitudinal magnetic field. The influence of different field annealing directions on GMI effect and impedance Z, resistance R and reactance X with a series of line width have been deeply analyzed.

Findings

In comparison with GMI sensors microfabricated by unannealed and transversal field annealed ribbons, GMI sensor which was designed and microfabricated by longitudinal field anneal ribbon performs better. The results can be explained by the domain wall motion and domain rotation during annealing process and the geometric structure of Co-based GMI sensor. In addition, shrinking the line width of GMI sensor can promote GMI effect significantly because of the effect of demagnetizing field, and the optimum GMI ratio is 209.7 per cent in longitudinal field annealed GMI sensor with 200 μm line width.

Originality/value

In conclusion, annealing in longitudinal magnetic field and decreasing line width can enhance GMI effect in micro-patterned Co-based amorphous ribbon.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to explore the phenomenon of ribbon-cutting ceremonies for new overseas subsidiaries and demonstrates the possibility of modifying such ceremonies to place greater emphasis on intra-organizational communications.

Design/methodology/approach

This is a careful study of 200 videos on 73 ribbon-cutting ceremonies in Russia between 2012 and 2018.

Findings

Under the current prevalent design, ribbon-cutting ceremonies mostly entail inter-organizational communication, i.e. communication between foreign investors and representatives of the authorities of the host country. Meanwhile, in addition to the standard ribbon-cutting ceremonies, it is observed that several videos on intra-organizational communication, i.e. pseudoformal meetings between the team from the corporate headquarters and employees of a newly built factory. During such meetings, top corporate executives express the importance of the factory vis-à-vis the future of the whole corporation, state their expectations for the further development of the factory’s production facilities, postulate the desired working atmosphere in the factory and appeal for the commitment and assistance of the employees in safeguarding the future of the investment.

Originality/value

The findings provide a basis for a broader discussion on the role of ribbon-cutting ceremonies as staged large-scale events organized by firms to articulate, highlight, disseminate, rationalize, as well as mobilize internal and external support for their strategy.

Abstract

THE equipment built at the Institute for research into the rapid solidification of tin alloys by melt‐spinning was successfully commissioned during the year and has been used extensively. The apparatus is capable of producing ribbon or flake from a jet of molten metal forced under gas pressure on to a wide bronze wheel rotating at circumferential speeds of up to 2000 m/min. The angle of attack of the metal stream, the clearance of the wheel by the crucible and the applied gas pressure may all be controlled so that various metal ribbon characteristics may be produced. The exact cooling rate for various alloys has not been measured but values of 106 deg C/sec are quoted by others as being attained with similar equipment. This produces very fine‐grained material which naturally shows changed mechanical properties in comparison with conventionally chill‐cast samples. However, no examples of amorphous material have yet been produced in work, which has concentrated so far on comparatively low melting point alloys.

Abstract

Purpose

In this chapter, I develop an analysis of the institutional logics which have shaped the organizational field of public sector mental health and which provide a framework for understanding the complexities facing policy makers, providers, researchers, and community mental health advocates.

Approach

I first assess the current state of public sector mental health care. I then describe institutional theory, which focuses our attention on the wider social values and priorities (i.e., institutional logics) which shape mental health care. In the current post-deinstitutionalization era, there are three competing institutional logics: recovery and community integration, cost containment and commodification, and increased social control over those with severe mental disorders. Each of these logics, and the conflict between them, is explicated and analyzed. I then develop a theoretical framework for understanding how conflicting institutional logics are resolved. In the concluding section of this chapter, I offer some guidance to both researchers and advocates seeking meaningful system level reform.

Research implications

Researchers studying mental health policy need to understand how competing institutional logics work to shape the political climate, economic priorities, and types of services available.

Social implications

Advocacy is critical for meaningful reform, and a fourth institutional logic – that of social justice – needs to be developed by which to evaluate policy reforms and service offerings.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to prepare thermal transfer ribbons with good alcohol resistance.

Design/methodology/approach

A variety of alcohol-resistant thermal transfer inks were prepared using different polyester resins. The printing temperature, printing effect, adhesion and alcohol resistance of the inks on the label were studied to determine the feasibility of using the ink for manufacturing thermal transfer ribbons. The ink formulations were prepared by a simple and stable grinding technology, and then use mature coating technology to make the ink into a thermal transfer ribbon.

Findings

The results show that the thermal transfer ink has good scratch resistance, good alcohol resistance and low printing temperature when the three resins coexist. Notably, the performance of the ribbon produced by 500 mesh anilox roller was better than that of other meshes. Specifically, the ink on the matte silver polyethylene terephthalate (PET) label surface was wiped with a cotton cloth soaked in isopropyl alcohol under 500 g of pressure. After 50 wiping cycles, the ink remained intact.

Originality/value

The proposed method not only ensures good alcohol resistance but also has lower printing temperature and wider label applicability. Therefore, it can effectively reduce the loss of printhead and reduce production costs, because of the low printing temperature.
