Abstract

Purpose

Current methods for flow field reconstruction mainly rely on data-driven algorithms which require an immense amount of experimental or field-measured data. Physics-informed neural network (PINN), which was proposed to encode physical laws into neural networks, is a less data-demanding approach for flow field reconstruction. However, when the fluid physics is complex, it is tricky to obtain accurate solutions under the PINN framework. This study aims to propose a physics-based data-driven approach for time-averaged flow field reconstruction which can overcome the hurdles of the above methods.

Design/methodology/approach

A multifidelity strategy leveraging PINN and a nonlinear information fusion (NIF) algorithm is proposed. Plentiful low-fidelity data are generated from the predictions of a PINN which is constructed purely using Reynold-averaged NavierStokes equations, while sparse high-fidelity data are obtained by field or experimental measurements. The NIF algorithm is performed to elicit a multifidelity model, which blends the nonlinear cross-correlation information between low- and high-fidelity data.

Findings

Two experimental cases are used to verify the capability and efficacy of the proposed strategy through comparison with other widely used strategies. It is revealed that the missing flow information within the whole computational domain can be favorably recovered by the proposed multifidelity strategy with use of sparse measurement/experimental data. The elicited multifidelity model inherits the underlying physics inherent in low-fidelity PINN predictions and rectifies the low-fidelity predictions over the whole computational domain. The proposed strategy is much superior to other contrastive strategies in terms of the accuracy of reconstruction.

Originality/value

In this study, a physics-informed data-driven strategy for time-averaged flow field reconstruction is proposed which extends the applicability of the PINN framework. In addition, embedding physical laws when training the multifidelity model leads to less data demand for model development compared to purely data-driven methods for flow field reconstruction.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to present the novel methodology of computational simulation of a helicopter flight, developed especially to investigate the vortex ring state (VRS) – a dangerous phenomenon that may occur in helicopter vertical or steep descent. Therefore, the methodology has to enable modelling of fast manoeuvres of a helicopter such as the entrance in and safe escape from the VRS. The additional purpose of the paper is to discuss the results of conducted simulations of such manoeuvres.

Design/methodology/approach

The developed methodology joins several methods of computational fluid dynamics and flight dynamic. The approach consists of calculation of aerodynamic forces acting on rotorcraft, by solution of the unsteady Reynold-averaged NavierStokes (URANS) equations using the finite volume method. In parallel, the equations of motion of the helicopter and the fluid–structure-interaction equations are solved. To reduce computational costs, the flow effects caused by rotating blades are modelled using a simplified approach based on the virtual blade model.

Findings

The developed methodology of computational simulation of fast manoeuvres of a helicopter may be a valuable and reliable tool, useful when investigating the VRS. The presented results of conducted simulations of helicopter manoeuvres qualitatively comply with both the results of known experimental studies and flight tests.

Research limitations/implications

The continuation of the presented research will primarily include quantitative validation of the developed methodology, with respect to well-documented flight tests of real helicopters.

Practical implications

The VRS is a very dangerous phenomenon that usually causes a sudden decrease of rotor thrust, an increase of the descent rate, deterioration of manoeuvrability and deficit of power. Because of this, it is difficult and risky to test the VRS during the real flight tests. Therefore, the reliable computer simulations performed using the developed methodology can significantly contribute to increase helicopter flight safety.

Originality/value

The paper presents the innovative and original methodology for simulating fast helicopter manoeuvres, distinguished by the original approach to flight control as well as the fact that the aerodynamic forces acting on the rotorcraft are calculated during the simulation based on the solution of URANS equations.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to study the mechanism and suppression of instabilities induced by cavitating flow around a three-dimensional hydrofoil with a particular focus on cavitation control with a slot.

Design/methodology/approach

The transient cavitating flow around a Clark-Y hydrofoil was investigated using a transport-equation-based cavitation model and the stress-blended eddy simulation model was used to capture the flow turbulence. A homogeneous Rayleigh–Plesset cavitation model was used to model the transient cavitation process and the results were validated with test data. A slot was applied to the hydrofoil to suppress cavitation instabilities, and various slot widths and exit locations were applied to the blade and the cavitation behavior, as well as drag/lift forces, were simulated and compared to investigate the effects of slot geometries on cavitation suppression.

Findings

The large eddy simulation based turbulence model was able to capture the interactions between the cavitation and turbulence. Moreover, the simulation revealed that the re-entrant jet was responsible for the periodic shedding of cavities. The results indicated that a slot was able to mitigate or even suppress cavitation-induced instabilities. A jet flow was generated at the slot exit and disturbed the re-entrant jet. If the slot geometry was properly designed, the jet could block the re-entrant jet and suppress the unsteady cavitation behavior.

Originality/value

This study provides unique insights into the complicated transient cavitation flows around a three-dimensional hydrofoil and introduces an effective passive cavitation control technique useful to researchers and engineers in the areas of fluid dynamics and turbomachinery.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to find the characteristics of supercritical airfoil in helicopter rotor blades for hovering phase using numerical analysis and the validation using experimental results.

Design/methodology/approach

Using numerical analysis in the forward phase of the helicopter, supercritical airfoil is compared with the conventional airfoil for the aerodynamic performance. The multiple reference frame method is used to produce the results for rotational analysis. A grid independence test was carried out, and validation was obtained using benchmark values from NASA data.

Findings

From the analysis results, a supercritical airfoil in hovering flight analysis proved that the NASA SC rotor produces 25% at 5°, 26% at 12° and 32% better thrust at 8° of collective pitch than the HH02 rotor. Helicopter performance parameters are also calculated based on momentum theory. Theoretical calculations prove that the NASA SC rotor is better than the HH02 rotor. The results of helicopter performance prove that the NASA SC rotor provides better aerodynamic efficiency than the HH02 rotor.

Originality/value

The novelty of the paper is it proved the aerodynamic performance of supercritical airfoil is performing better than the HH02 airfoil. The results are validated with the experimental values and theoretical calculations from the momentum theory.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to investigate the combustion of the n-Heptane droplets in the supersonic combustor with a cavity-based fuel injection configuration. The focus is on the impacts of the droplet size on combustion efficiency.

Design/methodology/approach

The finite volume solver is developed to simulate the two-phase reacting turbulent compressible flow using a single step reaction mechanism as finite rate chemistry. Three different fuel injection settings are studied for the considered physical geometry and flow conditions: the gas fuel injection, small droplet liquid fuel injection and big droplet fuel. The fuel is injected as a slot wall jet from the bottom of the cavity.

Findings

The results show that using the small droplet size, the complete fuel consumption and combustion efficiency can be achieved but using the big droplet sizes, most fuel exit the combustor in the liquid phase and gasified unburned fuel. It is also demonstrated that the cavity's temperature distribution of the liquid fuel case is different from the gas fuel, and two flame branches are observed there due to the droplet evaporation and combustion in the cavity.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study is performed for the first time on the combustion of the n-Heptane fuel droplets in scramjet configuration, which is promising propulsion system for the future economic flights.

Abstract

Purpose

Flow separation on wings, blades and vehicles can be delayed or even suppressed by the use of vortex generators (VG). Numerous studies, documented in the literature, extensively describe the performance of triangular and rectangular VG winglets. This paper aims to focus on the use of non-conventional VG shapes, more specifically an array of trapezoildal-perforated VG tabs.

Design/methodology/approach

In this study, computational fluid dynamic simulations are performed on an inline array of trapezoidal VG with various dimensions and inclination angles, in addition to considering perforations in the VG centers. The methodology of the present numerical study is validated with experimental data from the literature.

Findings

The performance and the associated flow structures of these tested non-conventional VG are compared to classical triangular winglets. For the proposed non-conventional trapezoidal VG, at the onset of stall, a 21% increase of lift over drag on the airfoil is observed. The trapezoidal VG enhancement is also witnessed during stall where the lift over drag ratio is increased by 120% for the airfoil and by 10% with respect to the triangular winglets documented in the literature.

Originality/value

The originality of this paper is the use of non-conventional vortex generator shape to enhance lift over drag coefficient using three-dimensional numerical simulations.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to study the transient cavitation process in torque converters with a particular focus on cavitation suppression with a passive flow control technique.

Design/methodology/approach

The transient fluid field in a torque converter was simulated by RANS-based computational fluid dynamics (CFD) in a full three-dimensional (3D) model. A homogeneous Rayleigh–Plesset cavitation model was used to simulate the transient cavitation process and the results were validated with test data. Various secondary flow passages (SFP) were applied to the stator blade. The cavitation behavior and hydrodynamic performance were simulated and compared to investigate the effect of SFP geometries on cavitation suppression.

Findings

Presented results show that cavitation in the torque converter is highly unstable at stall operating condition because of the combination of a high incidence angle and high flow velocity. The addition of an SFP to the stator blade produces a disruption of the re-entrant jet and reduces the overall degree of cavitation, consequently inhibiting the unstable cavitation and reducing performance degradation.

Originality/value

This paper provides unique insights into the complicated transient cavitation flow patterns found in torque converters and introduces effective passive flow control techniques useful to researchers and engineers in the areas of fluid dynamics and turbomachinery.

Abstract

Purpose

Support structures used in laser powder bed fusion are often difficult to clean from unsintered powder at the end of the process. This issue can be significantly reduced through a proper design of these auxiliary structures. This paper aims to investigate preliminary the airflow within differently oriented support structures and to provide design guidelines to enhance their cleanability, especially the depowdering of them.

Design/methodology/approach

This study investigates the cleanability of support structures in powder bed fusion technology. Digital models of cleaning operations were designed through computer-aided engineering systems. Simulations of the airflow running into the powder entrapped within the thin walls of auxiliary supports were implemented by computational fluid dynamics. This approach was applied to a set of randomly generated geometrical configurations to determine the air turbulence intensity depending on their design.

Findings

The results, which are based on the assumption that a relationship exists between turbulence and powder removal effectiveness, demonstrated that the maximum cleanability is obtainable through specific relative rotations between consecutive support structures. Furthermore, it was possible to highlight the considerable influence of the auxiliary structures next to the fluid inlet. These relevant findings establish optimal design rules for the cleanability of parts manufactured by powder bed fusion processes.

Originality/value

This study presents a preliminary investigation into the cleanability of support structures in laser powder bed fusion, which has not been addressed by previous literature. The results allow for a better understanding of the fluid dynamics during cleaning operations. New guidelines to enhance the cleanability of support structures are provided based on the results of simulations.
