Abstract

Purpose

In reliability studies, interests in discrete failure data came relatively late in comparison to its continuous analogue. Also, discrete failure data arise in several common situations. So, in this paper the authors try to study some reliability concepts such as reversed variance and reversed mean residual life functions based on discrete lifetime random variable.

Design/methodology/approach

Supposed T be a non‐negative discrete random variable, then based on reversed residual random variable Tk*=(kT|Tk), some useful and applicable relations and bounds are achieved.

Findings

In this paper, the authors study the reversed variance residual life in discrete lifetime distributions, the results of which are not similar to the continuous case. Its relationship with reversed mean residual life and reversed residual coefficient of variation are obtained. Also, its monotonicity and the associated ageing classes of distributions are discussed. Some characterization results of the class of increasing reversed variance residual life, which is denoted by IRVR, are presented and the upper bound for reversed variance residual life under some conditions is obtained.

Practical implications

There are many situations where a continuous time is inappropriate for describing the lifetime of devices and other systems. For example, the lifetime of many devices in industry, such as switches and mechanical tools, depends essentially on the number of times that they are turned on and off or the number of shocks they receive. In such cases, the time to failure is often more appropriately represented by the number of times they are used before they fail, which is a discrete random variable.

Originality/value

All the results based on discrete reversed residual lifetime, such as the relationships among reversed mean, variance and coefficient of variation residual lifetime and also their monotonicity ageing classes, are new.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of the paper is to predict the residual life of liquid-storage tank to ensure safety and long-term service life of the structure.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper carried out the stress analysis of the wall plate and bottom plate of the liquid-storage tank, and the influence of circumferential stress on the tank is considered. On the other hand, considering the influence of the tank wall surface on the tank life, based on the Paris law, the surface processing coefficient and surface roughness coefficient are introduced to improve the Paris law.

Findings

The effectiveness of the improved model is verified by comparing with theoretical and experimental data, which provide a new method for the prediction of the remaining service life of the tank. Combined with the fatigue crack data in the test report and the calculated circumferential stress, the residual life of the storage tank is predicted.

Originality/value

The improved model provides a new method for the prediction of the remaining service life of the tank.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to formulate and solve a last-mile distribution plan problem with concern for the quality of fruits and vegetables in cold chains.

Design/methodology/approach

The vehicle routing problem with time windows (VRPTW) is extended based on the characteristics of fruit-and-vegetable cold chains. The properties of multiple perishable foods, continuing decline in quality, various requirements for quality levels and optimal temperature settings during vehicle transportation are considered in the VRPTW. The product quality level is defined by the estimation of residual shelf life, which changes with temperature, and is characterized by a stepped decrease during the transportation process as time goes on. A genetic algorithm (GA) is adapted to solve the problem because of its convincing ability to solve VRPTW-related problems. For this purpose, solution encoding, a fitness function and evolution operators are designed to deal with the complicated problem herein.

Findings

A distribution plan including required fleet size, vehicle routing sequence and what quality level should be shipped out to account for the quality degradation during vehicle transportation is generated. The results indicate that the fulfillment of various requirements of different customers for various fruits and vegetables and quality levels can be ensured with cost considerations.

Originality/value

This study presents a problem for last-mile delivery of fresh fruits and vegetables which considers multiple practical scenarios not studied previously. A solution algorithm based on a GA is developed to address this problem. The proposed model is easily applied to other types of perishable products.

Abstract

Purpose

Numerous randomized clinical studies have shown that psyllium fiber lowers serum cholesterol in patients with hyperlipidemia and is thus recognized by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as a dietary fiber that may help reduce the risk of coronary heart disease (CHD) by lowering cholesterol. The purpose of this paper is to assess the potential economic implications for health-care cost savings and quality of life productivity gains if the cholesterol-lowering effect of psyllium, consumed daily as a fiber supplement, could be applied to a broad at-risk population.

Design/methodology/approach

A cost-benefit analysis tool was used to examine evidence that the use of psyllium as a cholesterol-lowering agent can reduce overall CHD-attributed medical care service costs in the USA among those at high risk of experiencing disease-related events.

Findings

Results of the analysis showed that the potential net annual avoided medical care service costs and annual quality of life productivity gains among US adults 45 and older with low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels = 130 mg/dL could be up to an average of $870m per year from 2013 to 2020 if everyone in the target population used seven grams of soluble fiber from psyllium daily, corresponding to a net benefit-cost ratio of $1.19 savings in annual medical service cost and annual productivity gains per $1 spent on a psyllium regimen.

Originality/value

Thus, the use of psyllium fiber as a daily supplement could be recommended as a means to help control the risk for potentially costly cardiovascular-related medical events and to maximize the economic potential for an improved quality of life in adults 45 and older with LDL cholesterol levels =130 mg/dL.

Purpose

The traditional practice for maintenance, quality control and production scheduling is to plan independently irrespective of an interrelationship exist between them. The purpose of this paper is to develop an approach for integrating maintenance, quality control and production scheduling. The objective is to investigate the benefits of the integrated effect in terms of the expected total cost of system operation of the three functions.

Design/methodology/approach

The proposed approach is based on the conditional reliability of the components. Cost model for integrating selective maintenance, quality control using sampling-based procedure and production scheduling is developed using the conditional reliability. An integrated approach is such that, first an optimal schedule for the batches to be processed is obtained independently while the maintenance and quality control decisions are optimized considering the optimal schedule on the machine. The expected total cost of conventional approach, i.e. “No integration” is calculated to compare the effectiveness of integrated approach.

Findings

The integrated approach have shown a higher cost saving as compared to the independent planning approach. The approach is practical to implement as the results are obtained in a reasonable computational time.

Practical implications

The approach presented in this paper is generic and can be applied at planned as well as unplanned opportunities. The proposed integrated approach is dynamic in nature, as during maintenance opportunities, it is possible to optimize the decision on maintenance, quality control and production scheduling considering the current age of components and production requirement.

Originality/value

The originality of the paper is in the approach for integration of the three elements of shop floor operations that are usually treated separately and rarely touched upon by researchers in the literature.

Known as Super Reality, these modular and scaleble systems use parallel arrays of Intel i860 RISC microprocessors running at 40MHz to achieve remarkable price/ performance characteristics. Super Reality offers such features as photo‐texturing, antialiasing and Gouraud shading at a cost which puts graphics supercomputing within reach of those who previously could not afford it. Abstract

Purpose

Facility management (FM) is important to the business success of companies and organizations. Nowadays, teaching FM is often spread over several disciplines, including architecture, management, business, and construction. The purpose of this paper is to present a case study completed by a team of three graduate students in the course “Introduction to Facility Management,” offered by a large southern university in the USA in the spring 2007 semester.

Design/methodology/approach

The students studied several aspects of FM, such as strategic and tactical planning, space allocation, maintenance and repair, operations and energy management, benchmarking and condition assessment, and life cycle costs, in buildings on the university's campus. Assisted by the Office of the Vice President for Facilities and using software contributed by an external commercial engineering and construction company, the students collected the data and conducted the analyses shown in this paper as part of their tasks for the course.

Findings

Structured and organized FM has the potential to improve the physical performance and appearance of a building and its systems, as well as to increase the users' level of satisfaction, and to improve the efficiency with which the building is maintained and operated.

Practical implications

This course offered the students an opportunity to encounter real problems and dilemmas that facility managers witness on a daily basis. Students were asked to offer creative solutions to these dilemmas.

Originality/value

The concepts of teaching FM are discussed in this paper, and demonstrated through real life cases.

Purpose

In order to improve the computation efficiency of the four-point rainflow algorithm, a one-stage extraction four-point rainflow algorithm is proposed based on a novel data preprocessing method.

Design/methodology/approach

In this new algorithm, the procedure of cycle counting is simplified by introducing the data preprocessing method. The high efficiency of new algorithm makes it a preferable candidate in fatigue life online estimation of structural health monitoring systems.

Findings

According to the data preprocessing method, in the process of cycle extraction, all equivalent cycles can be extracted at just one stage instead of two stages in the four-point rainflow algorithm, where the cycle extraction has to be performed from the doubled residue. Besides, there are no residues in the new algorithm. The extensive numerical simulation results demonstrate that the accuracy of new algorithm is the same as that of the four-point rainflow algorithm. Moreover, a comparative study based on a long input data sequence shows that the computation efficiency of the new algorithm is 42% higher than that of the four-point rainflow algorithm.

Originality/value

This merit of new algorithm makes it preferable in some application scenarios where fatigue life estimation needs to be accomplished online based on massive measured data. And it may attribute to preprocessing of input data sequence before data processing, which provides beneficial guidance to improve the efficiency of existing algorithms.

Abstract

Purpose

As the number of devices that connect to the Internet of Things (IoT) has grown, privacy and security issues have come up. Because IoT devices collect so much sensitive information, like user names, locations, phone numbers and even how they usually use energy, it is very important to protect users' privacy and security. IoT technology will be hard to use on the client side because IoT-enabled devices do not have clear privacy and security controls.

Design/methodology/approach

IoT technology would be harder to use on the client side if the IoT did not offer enough well-defined ways to protect users’ privacy and security. The goal of this research is to protect people's privacy in the IoT by using the oppositional artificial flora optimization (EGPKC-OAFA) algorithm to generate the best keys for the ElGamal public key cryptosystem (EGPKC). The EGPKC-OAFA approach puts the most weight on the IEEE 802.15.4 standard for MAC, which is the most important part of the standard. The security field is part of the MAC header of this standard. In addition, the MAC header includes EGPKC, which makes it possible to make authentication keys as quickly as possible.

Findings

With the proliferation of IoT devices, privacy and security have become major concerns in the academic world. Security and privacy are of the utmost importance due to the large amount of personally identifiable information acquired by IoT devices, such as name, location, phone numbers and energy use. Client-side deployment of IoT technologies will be hampered by the absence of well-defined privacy and security solutions afforded by the IoT. The purpose of this research is to present the EGPKC with optimum key generation using the EGPKC-OAFA algorithm for the purpose of protecting individual privacy within the context of the IoT. The EGPKC-OAFA approach is concerned with the MAC standard defined by the IEEE 802.15.4 standard, which includes the security field in its MAC header. Also, the MAC header incorporates EGPKC, which enables the fastest possible authentication key generation. In addition, the best methodology award goes to the OAFA strategy, which successfully implements the optimum EGPKC selection strategy by combining opposition-based (OBL) and standard AFA ideas. The EGPKC-OAFA method has been proved to effectively analyze performance in a number of simulations, with the results of various functions being identified.

Originality/value

In light of the growing prevalence of the IoT, an increasing number of people are becoming anxious about the protection and confidentiality of the personal data that they save online. This is especially true in light of the fact that more and more things are becoming connected to the internet. The IoT is capable of gathering personally identifiable information such as names, addresses and phone numbers, as well as the quantity of energy that is used. It will be challenging for customers to adopt IoT technology because of worries about the security and privacy of the data generated by users. In this work, the EGPKC is paired with adversarial artificial flora, which leads in an increase to the privacy security provided by EGPKC for the IoT (EGPKC-OAFA). The MAC security field that is part of the IEEE 802.15.4 standard is one of the areas that the EGPKC-OAFA protocol places a high focus on. The Authentication Key Generation Protocol Key Agreement, also known as EGPKCA, is used in MAC headers. The abbreviation for this protocol is EGPKCA. The OAFA technique, also known as the combination of OBL and AFA, is the most successful method for selecting EGPKCs. This method is recognized by its acronym, OAFA. It has been shown via a variety of simulations that the EGPKC-OAFA technique is a very useful instrument for carrying out performance analysis.
