Abstract

Purpose

A city's resident population is strategically the most valuable segment among those targeted by place marketing practitioners. Residents' quality of life and their satisfaction with their city of residence should be the ultimate aim of place management. The aim of this paper is, therefore, to develop a conceptualisation of place satisfaction for city residents that can be applied by place managers.

Design/methodology/approach

By reviewing prior definitions and conceptualisations of the related concepts of quality of life and satisfaction, a model of city resident place satisfaction is presented.

Findings

From a broad survey of the literature, three main fields were identified that have dealt with satisfaction – psychology, sociology and human ecology, and marketing. Drawing on, and integrating insights from, these separate, yet interrelated fields, the concept of resident place satisfaction is established and then the identified components of the working model of resident place satisfaction are presented.

Practical implications

The tensions facing place managers in satisfying internal targets' interests are outlined, followed by examples of performance measures and indicators designed to support place managers' complex task of positively shaping the lifestyles of their city inhabitants, workers and pleasure seekers.

Originality/value

The sub‐field of place management and marketing has emerged in the last decade and recognises satisfaction with a place as important, but, as yet, this concept remains theoretically undeveloped. This paper draws on concepts from other, related disciplines to establish the concept of resident place satisfaction as a contribution to the theory and practice of place management.

Abstract

Purpose

Using service-based logic as its theoretical lens, this study aims to approach residentsplace satisfaction in a novel way. The purpose is to explore residents’ perception of the place in which they live and to shed new light on their place satisfaction.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper is based on explorative qualitative focus group research. Data were collected in two typical municipalities in southern Sweden. The sampling procedure was purposive, resulting in six focus groups, consisting of a total of 33 residents. The empirical material was transcribed and analyzed using a structured content analysis inspired by grounded theory.

Findings

A model for understanding residents’ perceptions of what constitutes a good place to live is introduced. The model shows that many value propositions are produced in the provider sphere, independent of the user, for example by the municipality or the business sector. Other value propositions are co-created in a joint sphere, meaning that the user is actively involved in the production of these value propositions. The resident then uses different value propositions to create value-in-use in the resident sphere, independent of the provider, and to co-create value-in-use in the joint sphere.

Originality/value

The study creates a bridge between the stream of research on place satisfaction and studies that take stakeholders and co-creation into consideration; it shifts from the prevalent provider perspective on place branding and static place attributes to a focus on the relationship between users and providers.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate Brazilian residents’ internal perspectives in terms of their satisfaction with the country. The paper identifies the convergences and divergences among factors related to the reputation of Brazil.

Design/methodology/approach

Residents’ perceptions were investigated by combining measurement scales based on previous studies in the literature; thus, a survey of 236 Brazilian citizens was employed, followed by exploratory factor analysis.

Findings

Two factors related to country reputation were identified. Factor 1, residents’ perceptions related to their overall satisfaction with Brazil, shows that Brazilians like and respect the country yet have low levels of trust – this dimension involves place attachment because of its emotional influences. Factor 2, representing residents’ perceptions of Brazil’s reputation abroad, shows that Brazilians think the country has a moderately positive image but not a desirable and good reputation abroad – these results indicate the need for improvements through governmental efforts.

Research limitations/implications

As this study opted for a comprehensive sample and not for a stratified sample, it was not possible to explore specific aspects regarding each region (Midwest, North, Northeast, Southeast and South) of the country. This type of detail could be interesting due to Brazil’s diversity. To identify destination-branding opportunities, further study should investigate Brazilian regions or cities from the residents’ point of view.

Practical implications

Interdisciplinary debate is encouraged among scholars, consultants, businesses and government authorities involved on the reputation of a country.

Social implications

Showing how the population feels about the country may offer ways of thinking about how to improve the satisfaction of these “ambassadors” of the brand Brazil, which could have impacts in the foreign perceptions about Brazil.

Originality/value

This study contributes to the understanding of country reputation by exploring residents’ perceptions and roles related to their satisfaction and attachment to Brazil.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate the antecedents of local residents’ heritage resource protection and conservation responsibility behaviors that were identified based on the conceptual premises of value orientation and identity theories for the purpose of providing further insight into the impact of residents’ identity on their responsibility behaviors.

Design/methodology/approach

The proposed model explores the impacts of place identity, place satisfaction and personal norms on local residents’ heritage resource protection and conservation responsibility behaviors, which was tested following a two-step structural equation modeling process using data (N = 221) collected from a very popular heritage tourism destination, Phoenix Old Town, in China.

Findings

Findings show that value orientation and identity theories provide strong conceptual frameworks for the relationships among place identity, place satisfaction and personal norms and their impacts on heritage responsibility behavior.

Practical implications

This research identifies critical factors influencing residents’ heritage responsibility behaviors in China. Improving residents’ identification and satisfaction with a place can have positive impacts on their understanding of heritage protection responsibility and their intention to take responsible actions for heritage resource protection and conservation.

Originality/value

This study addresses a research gap regarding residents’ role in the protection and conservation of heritage resources through developing and empirically testing a theoretical model that incorporates residents’ identity and responsibility perspectives.

Abstract

Purpose

Aiming to investigate the direct and indirect effects of community involvement on residents’ life satisfaction, this study builds a conceptual framework through the mediation effect of perceived impacts and trust in government based on social exchange theory. The moderating effect of place attachment among these variables is proposed and empirically examined.

Design/methodology/approach

The conceptual model and causal relationships were estimated by adopting structural equation modeling, a serial mediation and moderation analysis. A total of 362 valid questionnaire data from residents in five rural tourism communities of China were collected and used for data analysis.

Findings

The results indicate that residents’ community involvement directly influences their life satisfaction and indirectly through perceived benefits and trust in government. Place attachment is also found to moderate the effect of community involvement on residents’ life satisfaction.

Originality/value

This study tests the effect of community involvement on residents’ life satisfaction that evolves from linking community involvement to perceived tourism impacts and trust in government to increase life satisfaction within the rural tourism context. It simultaneously detects place attachment as a moderating variable. The findings of this study can provide valuable insights for rural tourism managers to improve residents’ life satisfaction.

为了探究社区参与对居民生活满意度的直接和间接影响, 本研究基于社会交换理论构建了通过感知影响和政府信任作为中介效应的理论模型。同时, 提出并实证检验了地方依恋在这些变量关系中的调节作用。

设计/方法/手段

采用结构方程模型和一系列的中介和调节分析来估计概念模型和变量之间的因果关系。从中国五个乡村旅游社区收集了362份有效问卷并进行数据分析。

研究结果

结果显示, 居民的社区参与不仅直接影响他们的生活满意度, 并且通过感知收益和政府信任对他们的生活满意度产生间接影响。研究还发现,地方依恋可以调节社区参与对居民生活满意度的影响关系。

创意/价值

本研究探讨了乡村旅游可持续发展中社区参与对生活满意度的影响, 这种影响从链接社区参与与旅游感知效应到政府信任, 从而提高生活满意度,同时检验了地方依恋的调节作用。本研究能够为乡村旅游管理者提高居民生活满意度提供有价值的建议。

Propósito

Con el objetivo de investigar los efectos directos e indirectos de la participación de la comunidad en la satisfacción con la vida de los residentes, este estudio construye un marco conceptual a través del efecto mediador de los impactos percibidos y la confianza en el gobierno basado en la teoría del intercambio social. Se propone y examina empíricamente el efecto moderador del apego local entre estas variables.

Diseño/Metodología/Enfoque

La relación causal entre el modelo conceptual y la estructura se estima a través del modelo de ecuación estructural, y se lleva a cabo una serie de análisis de mediación y regulación. Los datos fueron recolectados de 362 cuestionarios válidos de cinco comunidades de turismo rural en China.

Resultados

Los resultados muestran que la participación comunitaria de los residentes influye directamente en su satisfacción con la vida, e indirectamente a través de sus ingresos percibidos y la confianza en el Gobierno. El estudio también encontró que el apego local puede regular la participación de la comunidad en la satisfacción de los residentes con la vida.

Originalidad/valor

Este estudio explora el impacto de la participación comunitaria en la satisfacción con la vida en el desarrollo sostenible del turismo rural, que va desde la vinculación de la participación comunitaria y la percepción turística hasta la confianza del Gobierno, mejorando así la satisfacción con la vida. Al mismo tiempo, se examina la función reguladora del apego local. Los resultados de este estudio proporcionan información de referencia valiosa para que los administradores del turismo rural mejoren la satisfacción de los residentes con la vida.

Abstract

Purpose

Given its ineffective urban control strategies, Iran’s urbanisation experiences indicate highly rapid migration, horizontal expansion, spatial inequality and an imbalanced distribution of public services. Considering the significance of historic fabric for the spatial continuity of neighbourhoods and the formation of the physical identity of cities, this study aims to evaluate the impact of quality of place (QoP) on resident satisfaction in a historic – religious settlement of Sari, a provincial capital city in the north of Iran.

Design/methodology/approach

Various studies have evaluated resident satisfaction in the old urban fabric, but scarce investigations have focussed on the impact of QoP on resident satisfaction at historic-religious settlements. Conceptually, this research extends theory by reframing QoP as a reflective, hierarchical construct and modelling its impact on satisfaction. A sample of 227 residents was analysed via structural equation modelling.

Findings

Understanding the contribution of QoP to residential satisfaction is a key element in facilitating sustainable neighbourhood development so as to improve the condition of a historic neighbourhood. QoP is a second-order construct with four dimensions, namely, public facilities, sense of belonging, perception of safety and environmental quality, and is highly reflected by public facilities, followed by perception of safety, environmental quality and sense of belonging. The objective characteristics of the environment and subjective wellbeing perceived by residents play significant roles on resident satisfaction, especially in historic neighbourhoods.

Originality/value

Analysis of the structural model supports the theoretical findings in the literature that associate high QoP with high satisfaction. The model of this work can be applied for a wide range of human settlements.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to monitor the urban landscape through the perceptions of residents and visitors, identifying features that cause visual impacts and providing insights for landscape management decision-makers. Captured impressions about the city whilst moving around are important to assess the satisfaction of city residents and city visitors through key elements, such as directional signage, outdoor advertising, restaurants’ outdoor terrace furniture, urban furniture, green spaces, traffic, cleaning, pedestrian areas, visitor flow and conservation of monuments, museums and buildings.

Design/methodology/approach

A survey was applied in the historical Porto city centre (Portugal) to understand residents’ and visitors’ perceptions of the city landscape and assess the differences between these two groups. Cronbach’s alpha was used to assess the reliability of the constructs (dimensions) of urban landscape. Non-parametric Mann-Whitney test was used to find significant differences in the perceptions of residents and visitors.

Findings

The results suggest significant differences in the perceptions. Residents value more two constructs of the landscape (heritage conservation and transport mobility) whilst visitors value more other two (pedestrian mobility and aesthetic quality). It is showed that residents have a strong sense of place and are concerned with the conservation of historical heritage. Visitors are more concerned with dimensions intrinsically related to tourism.

Originality/value

This research allowed to fill a gap found in the literature, namely, the importance of considering the perceptions of different actors in the urban landscape monitoring. These results are an important contribution for local authorities to understand the value of urban landscape elements from the perspective of residents and visitors. This study opened the possibility of comparing the results from different historical cities centres.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate how place satisfaction (SAT) and residents’ ambassadorship behaviour (RAB) are related to residentsplace attachment (PAtt). In addition, this relationship is examined at the city and the neighbourhood levels.

Design/methodology/approach

This study is based on a questionnaire survey of 1,160 residents from Khulna city in Bangladesh. This research model is tested using structural equation modelling.

Findings

The findings support the four-dimensional (place dependence, place social bonding, place identity and place affect) second-order construct of PAtt. It also highlights that RAB mediates the relationship between residents’ SAT and PAtt at the city and neighbourhood levels.

Research limitations/implications

Future research can investigate how RAB changes over time. In addition, the research model can be tested in multi-city and multi-country contexts.

Practical implications

The results from this study emphasise the need for urban planners to satisfactorily meet the needs of the residents to engender positive word-of-mouth, which can lead to greater PAtt.

Originality/value

This study contributes by improving the understanding of the way PAtt is influenced by SAT and RAB. Furthermore, it shows that this influence varies across city and neighbourhood levels.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to examine the influence of condominium attributes on resident satisfaction and word of mouth from the perspectives of the elderly in Thailand.

Design/methodology/approach

Data were collected from 338 elderly residents through a questionnaire survey and analysed by using descriptive statistics and structural equation modelling procedures.

Findings

The results showed that the strongest predictor of resident satisfaction was design functionality, followed by social environment, safety and security and service quality. In addition, the strongest predictor of word of mouth was safety and security, followed by design functionality, proximity, service quality and social environment.

Research limitations/implications

The data were drawn at the level of the overall characteristics of elderly residents. People may be different in terms of their demographic characters such as gender, age, and user experience.

Practical implications

The study suggests that condominium developers and designers should pay attention to design functionality both physically and mentally such as suitable materials, lighting and common areas. Moreover, the developers should focus on the proximity of the nearest hospitals, safety and security measures, well-trained security personnel and social activity arrangement.

Originality/value

Elderly condominium markets are increasingly growing as a result of the ageing society in Thailand. However, very few empirical studies investigate condominium attributes that affect resident satisfaction and word of mouth provided by real estate developers. The paper aims to determine driving factors that enhance the better well-being of elderly residents.

Abstract

The relationship between tourism development and its impacts on resident attitudes toward tourism has been widely discussed in literature. Not much attention, however, has been paid to residents’ role in tourism from the perspective of place identity theories. Based on a conceptual framework introduced by Palme, Koenig-Lewis, and Jones, this study applied the social identity theory in examining the relationship between resident’s place-based social identity and support for tourism. The results showed that both the cognitive and affective social identity components had significant effects on resident’s conative attitudes of support for tourism. What remains unsolved is which component is more significant and should be targeted in destination marketing. Theoretical and practical implications were discussed and recommended.
