Abstract

It has been suggested that “space and artifacts constitute systems of communication which organizations build up within themselves” (Gagliardi, 1992a, b, p. vi) and reflect the cultural life within that organization. This is a study of how the “landscape” of a public library (“Library X”), as an information retrieval system, relates to the values of the people who created it. The efforts here are geared towards understanding the physical instantiation of institutional culture and, more specifically, institutional values as they are reflected through the artifact.

Abstract

Purpose

Market orientation (MO) is at the center of the marketing discipline and has been the focus of one of the longest and richest research efforts in the field. This paper aims to study the development of the MO research area and changes in its nature, and the implications these have for MO research in particular as well as for the marketing discipline as a whole.

Design/methodology/approach

The study is guided by sociology of science research and studies of the history of the marketing discipline. It is based on a review of all MO articles and references in the period 1957‐2005.

Findings

The findings reveal three periods in the development of MO research: 1950s‐late 1970s, late 1970s‐early 1990s, and early 1990s until today. In terms of diffusion over time, MO research has diffused from marketing mostly to management, from generalist to specialist journals, from higher to lower quality journals, and from the USA only to Europe. Over time more scholars have become involved in MO research and the number of co‐authored MO articles has increased. The paper also finds that the MO research knowledge base and impact continue to be limited to marketing and management.

Research limitations/implications

While the study involves a large effort to collect longitudinal data on MO publication activity, its main limitation is its descriptive nature.

Originality/value

Unlike previous research in marketing that has typically studied articles, authors and reference data to gain insight into the intellectual developments of specific marketing journals, here the authors use these sources for studying the structure and evolution of a specific and important research area such as MO. Also, the study is based on rich and longitudinal data, enabling a variety of longitudinal analyses. The link between the MO area and the marketing discipline is of value, showing how the development of MO mirrors key developments in the marketing discipline at large and is influenced by many of the same forces that shape the discipline.

Abstract

The history of the public library is long and rich, and continues to reflect this institution's initial mission: to respond to the needs of an evolving democratic society. From its early days as a subscription service for the middle-class, through its evolution to become an educational site for the lower-classes and new immigrants, the public library has served as a touch-stone for urban industrial society in North America (Lerner, 1998, p. 138; Shera, 1974). Over the past century, public libraries have evolved to respond to the growing needs of the communities they serve and continue to do so with recent advances in technologies (such as DVDs, electronic books, the Internet, etc.), and with a more global outlook on the ways that people seek and share information. Indeed, the public library's constituents today are exceedingly diverse, including children and adults from a broad range of socio-economic, cultural, and educational backgrounds, all of whom seek information for a variety of personal and work-related purposes. The fact that public libraries have been fulfilling patrons' information needs for well over a century is a testament to their enduring success and versatility as information providers, and also points to the overall effectiveness of public librarians as intermediaries in the provision process.

Abstract

The Seminar on Library Interior Layout and Design organised by IFLA's Section on Library Buildings and Equipment, and attended by people from over twenty‐two countries, was held at Frederiksdal, Denmark, in June 1980. This present article neither reports on the Seminar's proceedings, as it is hoped to publish the papers in due course, nor describes fully the Danish public libraries seen, but rather uses the Seminar's theme and the library visits as a point of departure for considering some aspects of the interior layout—the landscape—of public libraries. Brief details of the new Danish public libraries visited are given in a table at the end of the article.

Abstract

Purpose

This article aims to explore the attitudes of academic reference librarians toward generalist and subject specialist reference service, and to present an examination of the ways that these librarians obtain training to handle a range of research queries that fall outside their areas of expertise.

Design/methodology/approach

A literature search was conducted to explore the current best practices for ongoing professional training. A follow up survey was conducted among reference librarians to gain insights into their attitudes toward generalist and subject specialist reference activities, and their participation in, and attitudes toward, related professional education and training.

Findings

The results suggest that the reference librarians who responded have a high comfort level for answering queries in a range of subject areas, and that while some librarians may defer to a readily available subject expert this is not a reflection of their confidence in their own ability to have assisted the patron.

Practical implications

Based on the insights garnered from this survey, the authors did an additional review of the literature and incorporated the additional research for their conclusions and recommendations as to how reference librarians, regardless of whether they regard themselves as generalists or specialists, can best expand their knowledge of reference sources in additional fields and answer queries outside their areas of expertise.

Originality/value

Other libraries and reference librarians can use the results of the paper to develop their own training/professional development programs and activities.

Abstract

A visual based group decision‐making process used for office layout finalisation is described. While quantitative and computer based models can be used for planning alternative layout plans, considerations of qualitative and personal factors should be given during the layout finalisation phase. The visual evaluation of detailed architectural drawings of alternative layout plans, by a group of the office employees, can result in generating ideas for modifications. These modifications are incorporated in a new plan, which is sketched by a professional office planner. The process of evaluating a sketch for the office plan, generating‐ideas for modifications, analysing the ideas and re‐sketching the office plan results in an effective office layout. This can increase employee morale and productivity. The visual based group decision‐making process was successfully used for layout finalisation of a large engineering office. A detailed description of this case study is given.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is the presentation of a technique to be integrated in a numerical airfoil optimization scheme, for the exact satisfaction of a strict equality cross-sectional area constraint.

Design/methodology/approach

An airfoil optimization framework is presented, based on Area-Preserving Free-Form Deformation (AP FFD) technique. A parallel metamodel-assisted differential evolution (DE) algorithm is used as an optimizer. In each generation of the DE algorithm, before the evaluation of the fitness function, AP FFD is applied to each candidate solution, via coupling a classic B-Spline-based FFD with an area correction step. The area correction step is achieved by solving a sub problem, which consists of computing and applying the minimum possible offset to each one of the free-to-move control points of the FFD lattice, subject to the area preservation constraint.

Findings

The proposed methodology is able to obtain better values of the objective function, compared to both a classic penalty function approach and a generic framework for handling constraints, which suggests the separation of constraints and objectives (separation-sub-swarm), without any loss of the convergence capabilities of the DE algorithm, while it also guarantees an exact area preservation. Due to the linearity of the area constraint in each axis, the extraction of an inexpensive closed-form solution to the sub problem is possible by using the method of Lagrange multipliers.

Practical implications

AP FFD can be easily incorporated into any 2D shape optimization/design process, as it is a time-saving and easy-to-implement repair algorithm, independent from the nature of the problem at hand.

Originality/value

The proposed methodology proved to be an efficient tool in facing airfoil design problems, enhancing the rigidity of the optimal airfoil by preserving its cross-sectional area to a predefined value.

Abstract

Many academic libraries have staffing arrangements where library employees work in more than one library branch or unit. These can be dual assignments or less formal agreements in which employees spend several hours per week away from their home departments. Zimmerman Library reference department, the social sciences, humanities, and education reference unit of the University of New Mexico (UNM) General Library (an ARL library serving over 25,000 students), uses “volunteer” staff from other library departments to help provide reference services as part of a library‐wide cross training program. According to library policy, “Cross training is an arrangement whereby a library employee from one department spends time training and working in another department. Cross training is that time an employee spends in another department or unit of the library learning to perform a task or a group of tasks and includes the time spent performing those tasks after training.” This article discusses a staff‐initiated and committee‐coordinated in‐service training program designed for these reference desk workers. This method is innovative, as library training, as evidenced by the literature, is typically viewed as the responsibility of the supervisor or manager. This training approach may serve as a model for other academic library reference departments requiring in‐house training for similar needs.
