Abstract

THE MIDAS comprehensive routine flight data recording system has been developed from equipment used primarily for aircraft research and testing programmes. Almost every operating parameter in an aircraft in the course of normal operations is transduced into electrical form for the purpose of aircraft instrumentation, and due to the high input impedance of the MIDAS CMM 400 series recorders a parallel connexion to the transducer circuit is generally all that is necessary in the way of installation wiring. Suitable compact and easily installed commercial types of transducers are readily available to meet any special requirements. As these parameters already exist in electrical form it is a comparatively simple step to transfer them to magnetic tape. A frequency modulated type of coding system is used.

Abstract

IN its concern with the adequacy of minimum standards, the NTSB over the years has been able to identify the usefulness of the required parameters and the potential significance of parameters that are not currently required. It considers that requirements need to be made to assist in establishing the probable causes of accidents and developing recommendations that might preclude these types of accidents from recurring. The proposals are that the current requirements would be expanded to include the NSTB's recommendation for newly manufactured aeroplanes and existing ones equipped with an ARINC 429 digital data bus or its equivalent. In addition, the recorder requirements of Appendix B would be extended to include Part 135 operations with aeroplanes and rotorcraft capable of carrying 20 passengers or more. Another flight recorder requirement would apply to newly manufactured, multi‐engine, turbine‐powered aircraft capable of carrying 10 or more passengers. It would be required that aeroplanes be equipped with flight recorders that at least record the parameters detailed in Appendix B of Part 121.

Abstract

A notable feature of the collaboration between this country and the U.S.A. since they became allies in World War II has been the exchange of ideas and the pooling of equipment, and one such item of equipment which has come our way is the V‐g (velocity and g) recorder, an instrument originally devised by the National Advisory Committee for Aero‐nautics in America and sent to us during the war, which we improved and have used ever since to assist in our operational research.

Abstract

Perhaps you have a large database you would like to distribute, or you may want to archive materials in a computer‐read‐able form that will last for 70 to 100 years. These goals are now within practical and affordable grasp, using personal computer‐based CD recording systems.

Abstract

This paper describes the use of a modified cassette recorder to present information and instruction to intermediaries and users of on‐line information retrieval systems using three media. The cassette recorder co‐ordinates (1) computer signals recorded from and displayed upon a visual display unit, (2) audio‐signals, that is voice commentary, relayed through a loud speaker, and (3) thirty‐five millimetre slides displayed on an overhead screen. The system was designed and developed for use in the Central Information Services, London University.

Abstract

AN account is given or the principle of a three‐dimensional shadowgraph recorder, its exemplification in the laboratory and its application to models in open and closed jets. Details are given of photographical, mechanical and graphical methods of reconstruction of the form of the shock wave from the records obtained, including correction for refraction due to thick glass walls of tunnels.

Abstract

Communications software has traditionally been used in the library environment for online searching to retrieve bibliographic and, more recently, numerical and textual information. Using microcomputers has become widespread for such work as their local storage and processing power can make online searching faster and more convenient than using a dumb terminal. It also enables data to be downloaded. Many packages have been developed which provide the features needed by online searchers and a recent trend has been for online hosts and database providers to produce software geared to their own systems.
