Abstract

New products are seldom really new. Yet modellers of adoption processes have largely ignored the effects of existing buying habits on first trial of a product. A standard renewal process model is shown to fit data on cumulative shoppers at a new store, in conjunction with lognormal buying frequency assumptions. The penetration curves so derived lie close to the widely used modified exponential, which therefore obtains a rationale. Such curves represent the normal rise in penetration, as a proportion of shoppers enter the market in accordance with their regular cycle of repurchase. Most products are bought in this way. Few are really new, in a sense defined and discussed. Yet model builders have persistently used the framework of adoption processes, ignoring the influence of a repurchase cycle. They have instead assumed that new product adoption is “driven” by forces such as weight of advertising. From the position of a devil's advocate, it is arguable that these assumptions are misguided. Marketing mix variables are not sufficient or adequate to explain the growth rate of products which are not genuine innovations.

Critique of an earlier article by Kuehn in 1962 suggesting that a particular factorial analysis of customer brand buying could predict with accuracy repurchase trends. Uses tables and mathematical formulae for emphasis of discussions. Sums up that the factorial analysis by Kuehn is satisfactory only as a result of artificial assumptions whereby variance is ignored within groups – but when this factor is taken into account the model fails to adequately fit the data of Snow Crop – frozen orange juice.

Abstract

A number of recent studies have suggested that many small businesses are opting to become members of strategic alliances with other firms in order to minimise the perceived barriers to adoption of electronic commerce (E‐commerce). This study compares the perception of barriers to E‐commerce adoption between a sample of Swedish small to medium enterprises (SMEs) that have become members of some form of strategic alliance and those that have remained outside such arrangements. The results show that, in general, SMEs that are part of a strategic alliance perceive barriers as less applicable than their counterparts that are not part of a strategic alliance.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to describe lessons learned from integrating student-managed investment funds (SMIFs) in finance education systems based on the case of the Raymond Rebsamen Investment Fund at the Sam M. Walton College of Business, University of Arkansas.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper has three main parts. First, it describes how the Rebsamen Fund operates as an integral part of undergraduate and graduate finance education at the Walton College. Second, it explains how the Fund spawned creation of sister funds, an institute, a 62-seat trading center, and coordinates with other agencies and stakeholders. Third, it lists strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats facing future SMIF integration into finance education.

Findings

The use of innovative experiential learning solutions like SMIFs bridging theory and practice can be enhanced by integrating them into effective systems of finance education.

Practical implications

Lessons learned include benefits of SMIF management by class, licensing and professional certification, trading centers, use of SMIF finances to support other components of education, proliferation of SMIFs, SMIF stimulation of academic units like centers/institutes, SMIF facilitation of collaboration, importance of tying SMIFs to student finance clubs, coordination of industry speaker visits between SMIF classes and clubs, and use of SMIFs in addressing cutting-edge challenges.

Originality/value

This paper discusses how SMIFs can be integrated in finance education.

Abstract

The purpose of this article is to present an overview of the history and development of transaction log analysis (TLA) in library and information science research. Organizing a literature review of the first twenty‐five years of TLA poses some challenges and requires some decisions. The primary organizing principle could be a strict chronology of the published research, the research questions addressed, the automated information retrieval (IR) systems that generated the data, the results gained, or even the researchers themselves. The group of active transaction log analyzers remains fairly small in number, and researchers who use transaction logs tend to use this method more than once, so tracing the development and refinement of individuals' uses of the methodology could provide insight into the progress of the method as a whole. For example, if we examine how researchers like W. David Penniman, John Tolle, Christine Borgman, Ray Larson, and Micheline Hancock‐Beaulieu have modified their own understandings and applications of the method over time, we may get an accurate sense of the development of all applications.

ELSEWHERE in this number we list libraries which have Esent us copies of their annual reports which we are glad to have. Now and again we are able to elaborate on these, but in the present issue that has not been possible. We would say, however, that these reports are deserving of the attention of librarians generally, and of students at the library schools. They are records of work in progress, and they do suggest the development of library policy. The best of them are of textbook value.

Abstract

The transition of U.S. manufacturing from traditional methods to Japanese kaizen has resulted in dramatic gains in productivity. While kaizen clearly employs scientific management techniques, this conversion also appears to result in enriched jobs and increased motivation. To determine any such effect, the Job Characteristics Model was utilized to study a sample of 236 production employees drawn from three manufacturing facilities. The results suggest that kaizen increases job enrichment and employee motivation, and may move employees to higher levels of growth need strength. Implications for manufacturing management are also discussed.
