Abstract

Purpose: This chapter aims to analyse and highlight the current landscape of performance management (PM) systems, and the benefits of integrating modern technology such as smart analytics (SA) and artificial intelligence (AI) into PM systems. The chapter discusses the application of AI in PM tasks which successively simplify many offline PM tasks.

Methodology: To carry out this analysis, a systematic literature review was performed. The review covers literature detailing PM components as well as research concerned with the integration of SA and AI into PM systems.

Findings: This study uncovers the merits of using SA and AI in PM. SA technology provides organisations with a clear direction for improvement, rather than simply state failure in performance. AI can be used to automate redundant tasks while retaining the human element of decision-making. AI also helps reduce the time required to take action on feedback.

Significance: The findings of this research provide insights into the use of SA and AI to make PM tasks fast, scalable, and error-free.

Abstract

Purpose: With this study, the authors aim to highlight the application of machine learning in smart appliances used in our day-to-day activities. This chapter focuses on analysing intelligent devices used in our daily lives to examine various machine learning models that can be applied to make an appliance ‘intelligent’ and discuss the different pros and cons of the implementation.

Methodology: Most smart appliances need machine learning models to decrypt the meaning and functioning behind the sensor’s data to execute accurate predictions and come to appropriate conclusions.

Findings: The future holds endless possibilities for devices to be connected in different ways, and these devices will be in our homes, offices, industries and even vehicles that can connect each other. The massive number of connected devices could congest the network; hence there is necessary to incorporate intelligence on end devices using machine learning algorithms. The connected devices that allow automatic control appliance driven by the user’s preference would avail itself to use the Network to communicate with devices close to its proximity or use other channels to liaise with external utility systems. Data processing is facilitated through edge devices, and machine learning algorithms can be applied.

Significance: This chapter overviews smart appliances that use machine learning at the edge. It highlights the effects of using these appliances and how they raise the overall living standards when smarter cities are introduced by integrating such devices.

Abstract

Chilika Lagoon is the largest brackishwater lagoon in the Indian subcontinent, situated at latitude 19°28′ and 19°54′ north and longitude 85°05′ and 85°38′ east (Fig. 2.1). The lagoon extends from the southwest corner of Puri and Khurdra districts to the adjoining Ganjam district of Orissa state. The pear-shaped lagoon is around 64.3km long and its width varies from 18to 5km. It is connected to the sea through irregular water channels with several small sandy and usually ephemeral islands (CDA, 2008). The average lagoon area is 1,055km2 which increases to 1,165km2 during the rainy season and shrinks to 906km2 during the summer season. Chilika Lagoon becomes less saline during the rainy season due to flood waters from 52 rivers and rivulets. It becomes more saline during the dry season as the supply of flood water is cut off when the south wind begins to blow and saline waters enter from the Bay of Bengal at high (Patro, 2001). The lagoon has three hydrologic subsystems (Mahanadi delta, western catchments, and the Bay of Bengal) influencing the hydrological regimes as shown in Fig. 2.1. The total inflow of freshwater from the Mahanadi delta has been estimated to be 4,912 million cubic meter, accounting for 80 percent of the total water flow. The maximum discharge of 3,182 million cubic meter comes from Makara River, followed by Bhargavi River (1,108 million cubic meter) and Luna River (428 million cubic meter) (CDA, 2008). Meanwhile, the western catchments account for 20 percent of the total fresh water flow.

Abstract

Purpose – This chapter asks what we should make of the gift exchanges that take place between workers and their managers on the floor of a massive offshore manufacturing unit in South India. Such exchanges appear anomalous in the ethnography of global manufacturing yet here they underpinned the organisation of hyper-intensive production processes.

Findings – Following diverse acts of giving, this chapter shows how these transactions constituted the performative and relational grounds on which workers came to know themselves and sought to shape the world around them. In doing so it extends the anthropology of work and labour by showing that acts of giving are integral to global commodity production.

Abstract

Thailand has seen waves of youth-led protests over the past three years. Pro-democracy youth activists have vociferously criticised authority figures: teachers, parents and political leaders, especially the king. Drawing on vignettes assembled over a 14-year ethnographic work with young people in Thailand, as well as on current research on youth (online and offline) activism in Bangkok, I examine the multi-layered meaning of kinship in Thai society. The chapter reveals the political nature of childhood and parenthood as entangled modes of governance that come into being with other, both local and international cultural entities. I argue that Thai youth activists are attempting to rework dominant tropes that sustain “age-patriarchy” in the Buddhist kingdom. Their “engaged siblinghood” aims to reframe Thailand's generational order, refuting the moral principles that establish citizens' political subordination to monarchical paternalism and, relatedly, children's unquestionable respect to parents. As I show, Thai youth activists are doing so by engaging creatively with transnational discourses such as “democracy” and “children's rights,” while simultaneously drawing on K-pop icons, Japanese manga and Buddhist astrology. In articulating their dissent, these youths are thus bearers of a “bottom-up cosmopolitanism” that channels culturally hybrid, and politically subversive notions of childhood and citizenship in Southeast Asia's cyberspace and beyond. Whatever the outcome of their commitment, Thai youth activism signals the cultural disarticulation of the mytheme of the Father in Thailand, as well as the growing political influence of younger generations in the region.

Purpose: Blockchain technology has exploded in popularity in the social economy over the years. Because blockchain technology offers so many advantages, it was first employed for Bitcoin transactions. The interaction between blockchain technology and financial industries will grow more personal and interwoven with the introduction of Bitcoin. As the value of blockchain technology became evident, more financial companies began to test its use in monetary operations. Numerous financial companies have been experimenting with blockchain technology to reduce the transactional costs and to improve the efficiency of operations, specifically in the domain of financial notes, cross-border payments, and asset-backed securitisation. Blockchain will have a broad range of applications in the financial industry shortly.

Methodology: Through financial tools and methods, trust may result in successful businesses. In the long term, blockchain technology is generally a significant source of the finance industry revolution. It allows you to create immutable transaction histories available to everyone on the network. A blockchain system consists of a sequence of blocks connected by a connection to the block before each block. Each block comprises more than one transaction representing changes in the ownership of assets on the ledger. A consensus procedure is employed to add new blocks to the existing chain, in which members of the public blockchain confirm that transactions are accurate.

Findings: Blockchain technology is still in its infancy. The challenges of sustainability, privacy, secrecy, and latency, among others, have surfaced. Financial markets must get a deeper grasp of Blockchain to provide trustworthy alternatives.

Significance: The book chapter highlights the architecture, protocols, and applications of Blockchain Technology. The chapter will also enlighten the readers about the challenges and solutions of Blockchain Technology in the Financial Market. Moreover, the chapter also discusses the future research scope of Blockchain Technology in the Financial Market.
