Abstract

Purpose

Public service motivation (PSM) is a universal construct, but indigenous traditions and culture of a country are known to influence its measurement. Currently, no research on PSM in India is available. To facilitate PSM research in India, this article compares the two most used measures of PSM (PSM-14 and PSM-16) to identify the most suitable scale for further exploration.

Design/methodology/approach

The study uses a cross-sectional survey research design. Data were collected from 387 employees working in the public sector. ADANCO, a PLS-SEM package, was used to analyze the data.

Findings

Contrary to expectations, it was found that the older PSM-14 exhibited better psychometric properties than the newer PSM-16. The PSM-14 also exhibited greater predictive validity than PSM-16.

Practical implications

The study demonstrates that PSM is a valid construct in India and can be measured adequately by existing instruments. However, certain sub-dimensions of the scale (such as compassion) may be reworded/changed to reflect Indian cultural ethos better.

Originality/value

The findings will be tremendously helpful to researchers interested in examining the correlates of PSM in the Indian context by making it easier to select the appropriate measurement instrument. The study also provides a careful examination of each of the sub-dimensions of the construct to enable the development of more robust PSM measures in the future.

Abstract

Purpose

Public service motivation (PSM), among actual and prospective employees in the public sector, lead to positive work outcomes. However, there is limited integration of PSM with existing motivational theories, especially self-determination theory (SDT). The impact of destructive leadership styles on PSM is also understudied. The study aims to fill the gap.

Design/methodology/approach

The study used a cross-sectional survey of 693 public sector officials employed in Indian Railways to test the hypotheses. PLS-SEM was used for the analysis. The study found that fulfillment of basic psychological needs (BPN) at work leads to improved PSM while BPN partially mediates the positive/negative effect of constructive/destructive leadership styles like servant/autocratic leadership on employees' PSM.

Findings

Autocratic/servant leadership was negatively/positively and significantly related to PSM and to all three BPN needs. Servant leadership was found to be positively and significantly related to all three BPN needs, while the BPN needs partially mediated the relationship between servant leadership and PSM.

Research limitations/implications

The study identifies servant leadership as a driver of PSM and suggests that managers employed in public sector establishments should be trained to be less autocratic and more attuned to subordinates' needs. The baneful impact of autocratic leadership on employee PSM is highlighted. The cross-sectional nature of study makes it susceptible to common-method bias. The sample was limited to a single country. Future longitudinal and experimental studies based on samples drawn from multiple countries can yield more robust results.

Originality/value

The study advances the integration of PSM with SDT by identifying PSM with introjected motivation. It is also the first study to link destructive leadership styles with a reduction in employees' PSM. It identifies a counterintuitive, negative relationship between competence need satisfaction and PSM in the Indian public sector.

Abstract

Purpose

The study approaches the social problem of overconsumption by examining how dispositional characteristics (Trigunas) affect self-control capacity and buying impulsiveness.

Design/methodology/approach

A survey of 181 Indian students was conducted to collect data on Trigunas, self-control and impulse buying tendency (IBT). Partial least squares-based structure equation modeling package ADANCO was used for data analysis.

Findings

The results indicate that two out of the three gunas were related to impulsive buying tendency. As hypothesized, self-control mediated these relationships. The findings prove that Trigunas carry differential influence on self-control capacity and impulsive buying behavior of individuals.

Practical implications

The results of this study offer new insights and ideas to practitioners and researchers pursuing the problem of overconsumption. This study delves into ancient Hindu knowledge of mindfulness and offers fresh psychological constructs that broaden scholarly understanding on personality-related drivers of overconsumption.

Originality/value

Most research on overconsumption and related issues has been conducted using western personality models. Additionally, many of these findings are inconsistent. This article broadens this discussion by applying indigenous Indian psychology constructs to the study of consumer behavior and provides empirical support for the same.

Abstract

A dynamical two‐dimensional problem of a homogeneous transversely isotropic fibre‐reinforced generalized thermoelastic solid with an overlying acoustic fluid layer has been considered to investigate disturbance due to mechanical load. Laplace and Fourier transform techniques are applied to solve the problem. Uniformly distributed and linearly distributed forces are applied to illustrate the utility of the approach. A numerical inversion technique has been applied to obtain the solution in the physical domain. Numerical results are obtained and presented graphically to show the effect of anisotropy along with the comparison of homogeneous transversely isotropic fibre‐reinforced generalized thermoelastic solid and isotropic elastic solid.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to study the energy ratios of plane waves on an interface of nonlocal thermoelastic halfspace (NTS) and nonlocal orthotropic piezothermoelastic half-space (NOPS).

Design/methodology/approach

The memory-dependent derivatives (MDDs) approach with a hyperbolic two-temperature (HTT), three-phase lag theory is used here to study how the energy ratios change at the interface with the angle of incidence.

Findings

Plane waves that travel through NTS and hit the interface as a longitudinal wave, a thermal wave, or a transversal wave send four waves into the NOPS medium and three waves back into the NTS medium. The amplitude ratios of the different waves that are reflected and transmitted are used to calculate the energy ratios of the waves. It is observed that these ratios are affected by the HTT, nonlocal and MDD parameters.

Research limitations/implications

The energy ratios correspond to four distinct models; nonlocal HTT with memory, nonlocal HTT without memory, local HTT with memory and nonlocal classical-two-temperature with memory concerning the angle of incidence from 0 degree to 90 degree.

Practical implications

This model applies to several fields, including earthquake engineering, soil dynamics, high-energy particle physics, nuclear fusion, aeronautics and other fields where nonlocality, MDD and conductive temperature play an important role.

Originality/value

The authors produced the submitted document entirely on their initiative, with equal contributions from all of them.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to study the energy ratios of plane waves on an imperfect interface of elastic half-space (EHS) and orthotropic piezothermoelastic half-space (OPHS).

Design/methodology/approach

The dual-phase lag (DPL) theory with memory-dependent derivatives is employed to study the variation of energy ratios at the imperfect interface.

Findings

A plane longitudinal wave (P) or transversal wave (SV) propagates through EHS and strikes at the interface. As a result, two waves are reflected, and four waves are transmitted, as shown in Figure 2. The amplitude ratios are determined by imperfect boundaries having normal stiffness and transverse stiffness. The variation of energy ratios is computed numerically for a particular model of graphite (EHS)/cadmium selenide (OPHS) and depicted graphically against the angle of incidence to consider the effect of stiffness parameters, memory and kernel functions.

Research limitations/implications

The energy distribution of incident P or SV waves among various reflected and transmitted waves, as well as the interaction of waves for imperfect interface (IIF), normal stiffness interface (NSIF), transverse stiffness interface (TSIF), and welded contact interface (WCIF), are important factors to consider when studying seismic wave behavior.

Practical implications

The present model may be used in various disciplines, such as high-energy particle physics, earthquake engineering, nuclear fusion, aeronautics, soil dynamics and other areas where memory-dependent derivative and phase delays are significant.

Originality/value

In a variety of technical and geophysical scenarios, wave propagation in an elastic/piezothermoelastic medium with varying magnetic fields, initial stress, temperature, porosity, etc., gives important information regarding the presence of new and modified waves.

Abstract

Purpose

The current study aims to explore the relationship between time perspective and knowledge hiding at the workplace.

Design/methodology/approach

The research adopts a cross-sectional design. Data were collected using purposive sampling technique from (n = 425) employees representing five sectors of companies.

Findings

Holding onto negative experiences of the past (past negative TP) and perceiving that one cannot control the outcomes of a circumstance (fatalistic TP) predict all three types of knowledge hiding. Staying in a perspective of working towards achieving a goal (futuristic TP) was negatively (although insignificantly) associated with knowledge hiding.

Practical implications

If organizations focus on shifting the time perspective of employees towards the future, KH can be curtailed. Consequently, knowledge management can be enhanced.

Originality/value

A decade of research has focused upon identifying dynamics of knowledge hiding at multiple levels, yet, the influence of TP on knowledge hiding is a novel empirical contribution to literature.

Abstract

The propagation of free vibrations in microstretch thermoelastic homogeneous isotropic, thermally conducting plate bordered with layers of inviscid liquid on both sides subjected to stress free thermally insulated and isothermal conditions is investigated in the context of Lord and Shulman (L‐S) and Green and Lindsay (G‐L) theories of thermoelasticity. The secular equations for symmetric and skewsymmetric wave mode propagation are derived. The regions of secular equations are obtained and short wavelength waves of the secular equations are also discussed. At short wavelength limits, the secular equations reduce to Rayleigh surface wave frequency equations. Finally, the numerical solution is carried out for magnesium crystal composite material plate bordered with water. The dispersion curves for symmetric and skew‐symmetric wave modes are computed numerically and presented graphically.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to study the propagation of Rayleigh waves in thermoelastic medium with mass diffusion.

Design/methodology/approach

The field equations for the linear theory of homogeneous isotropic thermoelastic diffusion medium are taken into consideration by using dual-phase-lag heat transfer (DPLT) and dual-phase-lag diffusion (DPLD) models. Using the potential functions and harmonic wave solution, three coupled dilatational waves and a shear wave is obtained. After developing mathematical formulation, the dispersion equation is obtained, which results to be complex and irrational. This equation is converted into a polynomial form of higher degree.

Findings

From the polynomial equation, Rayleigh wave root is found. The secular equation is resolved into a polynomial form to find the roots and therefore to find the existence and propagation of Rayleigh wave. The existence of Rayleigh wave in the assumed model depends on the values of various parameters involved in the secular equation. These roots are resolved for phase velocity and attenuation of the inhomogeneous propagation of Rayleigh wave. Behavior of particle motion of these waves inside and at the surface of the thermoelastic medium with mass diffusion is studied. Particular cases of the interest are also deduced from the present investigation.

Originality/value

Governing equations corresponding to DPLT and DPLD models of thermoelastic diffusion are formulated to study the wave propagation and their dependence on various material parameters. In this paper effects of thermal and diffusion phase lags on the phase velocity, attenuation and on particle paths are observed and depicted graphically.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to deal with the study of plane waves and fundamental solution in a modified couple stress generalized thermoelastic solid with three-phase-lag (TPL) model of thermoelasticity.

Design/methodology/approach

It is found that for two-dimensional model, there exists two longitudinal waves, namely, longitudinal wave (P-wave), thermal wave (T-wave), and a set of coupled transverse waves (SV1 and SV2 waves). In addition, the fundamental solution for the system of differential equations for steady oscillations in terms of elementary functions has been constructed. Some properties of fundamental solution are also established. Various particular cases of interest are also deduced from the present investigations and compared with the known results.

Findings

The phase velocity, attenuation coefficient, specific loss and penetration depth are computed numerically and presented graphically to see the effect of TPL model, dual-phase-lag (DPL) model and GN-III model in the presence of couple stress parameter.

Originality/value

The results are compared with couple stress TPL model, couple stress DPL model and GN-III model.
