Abstract

Purpose

Understanding managers’ experiences of workplace dignity (WPD) is critical to working with others in an organization. However, there is limited research available on this subject. This study aims to expand the knowledge of WPD by exploring managers’ understanding of WPD and their experiences of both affirmation and denial of dignity at work.

Design/methodology/approach

Critical incident technique (CIT) has been used to explore the themes related to managers’ perceptions of WPD through their lived experiences. Affective event theory supports the use of CIT in the current study context.

Findings

Findings unfolded many new aspects of WPD, which have not been explored in the past. An exploration and analysis of the three research questions related to managers’ understanding, affirmation and denial experiences of WPD have added new insights to the existing literature. These have been further segregated under the following four main factors: internal, external, process and feelings. Finally, the authors conclude that external factors that arrive during exchange relationships play an important role in managers’ understanding and experiences of WPD in India.

Originality/value

To the best of the knowledge, this is a seminal study to have explored managers’ understanding of WPD in India. It aims to add to the literature by enriching the construct of WPD. Practical implications include a deeper managerial understanding of the affirmational practices and factors which will positively impact WPD.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present multiple case studies of women in leadership roles in India with a view to identifying inhibitors, facilitators and the strategies adopted by them to mitigate the challenges in their odyssey to these positions. The paper contributes to the pivotal subject of under-representation of women in apex positions, which has garnered the attention of researchers in recent years grappling with the identification of the underlying causes. Thus, with a view to narrowing the gender gap in leadership positions, a greater understanding of this phenomenon is called for.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper adopts exploratory case study method using multiple case studies. Empirical data were gathered using in-depth semi-structured interviews and personality test (NEO FFI) from women in leadership positions. The qualitative data were analysed using thematic analysis.

Findings

The analysis of data has led to the identification of challenges faced by the women that were categorised as personal, professional, organisational and social issues. Further, six themes emerged as the strategies adopted by the women leaders to overcome the challenges. The paper also highlights the critical social, behavioural and organisational facilitators that played an important role in their leadership journey. The paper also includes context-specific findings of women leaders from Indian industry.

Practical implications

The paper would have relevance for researchers and practitioners in the field of gender diversity, leadership, organisational behaviour and human resource management. The findings of this paper can be leveraged by organisations to retain and manage female talent, which is a focal area in the present dynamic business environment, when a need for gender diversity is widely acknowledged by the top management in organisations. The exploratory case studies provide vistas for gender-based context-specific and cross-cultural research on the challenges faced by women executives in their leadership journey and the strategies adopted to mitigate these.

Originality/value

Though a great deal has been written about the barriers to women’s career advancement, less is known about the facilitators of women’s advancement. Also, women in the Asian context face unique challenges which present a major problem for multinational companies whose hopes for growth are pinned on emerging markets. The paper has identified new emergent themes, which have not been mentioned in the extant literature nationally or globally. The findings provide inputs to companies to adopt policies and practices to facilitate gender equality in leadership. The paper bridges the knowledge gap and makes conceptual contributions for future research.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to seek to propose that spiritual traditions of India have enormous wisdom to provide a wholesome spiritual foundation to the modern day management. It can also play a significant role in facilitating the dimensions of workplace spirituality as conceptualized by the western counterparts. The paper does not intend to reinvent the wheel but to present an integrated framework for facilitating workplace spirituality that incorporates the western and the Indian views.

Design/methodology/approach

For this study, the authors maintained an open approach. The authors first reviewed the extant literature on workplace spirituality to explore its dimensions. Thereafter, the authors searched for Indian spiritual traditions that can be suggested to have some similarity with the dimensions of workplace spirituality and can further help in facilitating those dimensions at the workplace.

Findings

The paper presents an integrated framework that suggests that doctrine of Karma Yoga, tradition of Loksangrah, Guna theory, daivi sampat and Pancha Kosha model can help in facilitating the five dimensions of workplace spirituality specified in the study.

Research limitations/implications

The study proposes five dimensions of workplace spirituality which is not an exhaustive list. These dimensions may be facilitated by a variety of Indian spiritual traditions but this study includes only five specific Indian traditions.

Originality/value

The authors have creatively integrated the eastern and the western knowledge to come up with a framework that enriches the concept of workplace spirituality facilitation.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to analyse the problem of “Rape” in India from multiple perspectives and recommend measures for mitigating this crime from the country. Using the much highlighted incident of gang rape of a 23-year-old woman in Delhi, India on 16 December 2012, the paper analyses the behaviour of the various parties involved in the case with the help of some sociological and psychological theories.

Design/methodology/approach

A structured investigation through the technique of root cause analysis was applied to the gang rape case of 16 December 2012 to identify the true cause of the problem of rape and suggest the actions necessary to eliminate such reoccurrences in future.

Findings

The analysis of the problem of rape in general and the gang rape case in particular presented numerous causes for this problem. Considering the complexity of question the authors have presented a multi-dimensional response to this problem.

Research limitations/implications

Due to the sensitive nature of subject matter under study this research paper is limited by use of secondary data to conduct root cause analysis.

Social implications

Despite the fact that rape is regarded heinous and criminal in nature, the number and the level of inhumanity of this crime has been on a rise. Therefore, the subject matter is very important and topical. The paper makes theoretical and practical contribution on a least researched subject of crime against women in the form of rape. Many benefits could accrue from such multi-dimensional analysis of the rape case. A better understanding of the motivation behind the rape would probably result in taking measures to prevent the problem.

Originality/value

Though multifarious views exist regarding rape and allied crimes, the studies are dispersed in nature and need a holistic integration to delve deeper into the causes and consequents of rape. This paper not only integrates diverse perspectives but also explores the multi-dimensional causes of the phenomenon of rape.

Abstract

Purpose

A cooperative bank customer in India has varied needs and is a unique segment of Indian banking. The purpose of the study is to provide the sector with an understanding of the needs of the cooperative bank customers in the context of improving core competencies required for the delivery of service.

Design/methodology/approach

The study adopted multiple methods that included the Delphi method as well for competency identification. Appropriate factor analyses are conducted to confirm the construct validity and to determine the underlying structure of the variables chosen for the study. Stepwise multiple regression analysis is employed for data analysis.

Findings

Surprisingly, emotional competency showed an insignificant relationship with customer satisfaction. The social and technical competencies are found significant. The findings suggest the incorporation of technological advancements in cooperative banks.

Research limitations/implications

The generalization of the results is limited as the work was confined only to cooperative banks and also because of the limited sample size. The self-reported nature of competency measures also limits the accuracy of results.

Practical implications

This work suggests that a bank has to concentrate on improving the technical competencies of the employees. The findings could also aid the bank managements in policy decisions in recruitment, selection, performance appraisal among others.

Social implications

Competent employees could help meet the customers to satisfy their financial needs and thereby the social and economic development of the weaker section of the society could be achieved.

Originality/value

Conducting primary research and identification of technical competency as the major contributor to customer satisfaction are the major contributions.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to determine the cross‐cultural reliability and validity of the Emotional Competence Inventory (ECI‐2) in a cross‐cultural context.

Design/methodology/approach

Using a competency‐based approach to social and emotional intelligence (EI), the paper presents data on Indian managers from the manufacturing and service industries collected using self‐report and multi‐rater assessments. Factor analysis explored the latent structure of social and emotional intelligence competencies on the Indian sample. Divergent validity was assessed using a Stress Personality test. Internal reliability of the ECI‐2 was also determined for a sample of 400 Indian managers.

Findings

A two‐factor structure has emerged in the cross‐cultural context similar to the latent structure of the construct explored by the test developers of the ECI‐2. However, six items did not have significant loading. ECI‐2 has been found to have statistically significant reliability coefficient and divergent validity with Stress Personality test on the Indian sample.

Research limitations/implications

The competency‐based approach to emotional and social intelligence, with a two‐factor structure, has found empirical evidence on the managerial sample in the Indian context. Future research can test this on other professional groups. Norms can be developed for various professional groups using a competency‐based framework of EI.

Practical implications

ECI‐2 can be used with modification based on the findings for talent management, employee development, counseling and succession planning for Indian managers.

Originality/value

Cross‐cultural validation, in the Indian context, of a competency‐based framework of emotional and social intelligence and its measure is useful for researchers and practitioners and for professional and leadership development of managers.

Abstract

Purpose

In comparison to a nozzle with a larger/finite separation distance (Thanigaiarasu et al., 2019), a thin-lip nozzle (Srinivasarao et al., 2017) minimizes drag. Coaxial nozzles with thin lips are an appropriate tool for studying high subsonic jets because it does not create a dominant re-circulation zone. This study aims to analyze the characteristic of separation distances, between primary and secondary nozzles, within the range of 0.7–3.2 mm which can be considered a thin lip.

Design/methodology/approach

A separation distance of 0.7  (Papamoschou, 2004), 1.7  and 2.65 mm (Lovaraju and Rathakrishnan, 2011) is considered for the present study. The main nozzle exit Mach number is maintained at a subsonic condition of Mach 0.6, and the co-flowing nozzle exit Mach number is varied from 0% (secondary jet stopped/single jet) to 100% (Mach 0.6) in steps of 20% with respect to the main nozzle exit Mach number. A comparison was made between these velocity ratios for all three lip thicknesses in the present study. Design mesh and analysis were done by using Gambit 2.6.4 and Fluent 6.12. Velocity contours and turbulence contours were studied for qualitative analysis.

Findings

When lip thickness increases from 0.7 to 2.65 mm, the potential core length (PCL) of the primary jet decreases marginally. Additionally, the PCL of the primary jet elongates significantly as the velocity ratio increases. The primary shear layer is dominant at 20% co-flow (20 PCF), less dominant at 60% co-flow (60 PCF) and almost disappeared at 100% co-flow (100 PCF). Concurrently, the secondary shear layer almost disappeared in 20 PCF, dominant in 60 PCF and more dominant in 100 PCF. Different zones such as initial merging, intermediate and fully merged zones are quantitatively and qualitatively analyzed.

Practical implications

Co-flow nozzle is used in turbofan engine exhaust. The scaled-down model of a turbofan engine has been analyzed. Core length is directly proportional to the jet noise. The PCL signifies the jet noise reduction in a high-speed jet. For a low-velocity ratio, the potential core is reduced and hence can reduce the jet noise. At the same time, as the velocity ratio increases, the mass flow rate of the coaxial increases. The increase in the mass flow increases the thrust of the engine. The aircraft engine designer should analyze the requirement of the aircraft and choose the optimal velocity ratio coaxial nozzle for the engine exhaust (Papamoschou, 2004).

Originality/value

There have been many research studies carried out previously at various lip thickness such as 0.4  (Georgiadis, 2003), 0.7  (Papamoschou, 2004), 1.5  (Srinivasarao et al., 2014a), 1.7  (Sharma et al., 2008), 2  (Naren, Thanigaiarasu and Rathakrishnan, 2016), 2.65  (Lovaraju and Rathakrishnan, 2011), 3  (Inturiet al., 2022) and 3.2 mm (Perumal et al., 2020). However, there is no proper study to vary the lip thickness in this range from 0.7 to 3.2 mm to understand the flow behavior of a co-flowing jet.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the organizational role stress (ORS) in employees of Allahabad Bank posted at Guwahati city serving at scale 1 and above up to the deputy general manager (DGM).

Design/methodology/approach

This study was carried out at different branches of Allahabad Bank located in the city of Guwahati, Assam. The respondents included assistant managers and DGM. The sampling technique used for data collection was non-probability sampling; the method used was convenience sampling. This study is exploratory as well as descriptive in nature. A questionnaire was distributed and collected personally by the researcher.

Findings

After an extensive literature review, it was the belief of the researchers that the employees of Allahabad Bank could be experiencing the effects of stress. On using the tools (mean, ANOVA, Correlation) on the dimensions of stress and demographic factors, the results were almost identical.

Research limitations/implications

In the banking industry, every constituent of the occupational stress can be studied more thoroughly. More insight into the factors of stress can be brought into the spotlight through more research work. Academicians may shed light on new factors that are creating stress, but still remain unidentified.

Practical implications

This study can be extensively used in fields other than the banking industry such as hospitality, healthcare, insurance, etc. Stress gives rise to physical problems and health problems. It may also lead to psychological, behavioral and organizational problems. Stress adversely affects the productivity of the organization as employees experiencing stress may not perform up to their capability and according to the requirements of the organization. Awareness among people of stress and the reasons for its occurrence is a must to keep them healthy, happy and competitive.

Originality/value

This research is based on primary data collected from Udai Pareek’s ORS scale. The target sample was scale 1-5 employees of Allahabad Bank posted at Guwahati city. The literature review information and the work of other researchers are supported by due reference.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to capture the status of implementation of Six Sigma in various manufacturing industries and also examine the success of the Six Sigma by using different performance indicators.

Design/methodology/approach

The methodology of critical review involves the selection and classification of 112 research articles on the implementation of Six Sigma in different manufacturing industries. The selected articles are categorized by the following: articles distribution based on the year of publication, publication database, various journals, contribution of authors, continent, scale of industry, implemented approaches, focused industry, tools and techniques used in phases of Six Sigma methodology, and performance indicators used in Six Sigma implementation. Then after, future scopes of research opportunities are derived based on significant findings.

Findings

The literature revealed that: Very few work was undertaken on the implementation of Six Sigma in various manufacturing industries like ceramic, paper, gems and jewelry, cement, furniture, stone, fertilizer, forging, paper and surface treatment industries. Most of the researchers have considered very few performance indicators to identify the improvement after Six Sigma implementation. But, there is no clue regarding overall improvement in different perspectives after the implementation of Six Sigma. The financial indicators, personnel indicators, process indicators and customer indicators are useful to measure the overall improvement after the implementation of Six Sigma in the manufacturing sector.

Research limitations/implications

The study was carried out on the implementation of Six Sigma methodology in various manufacturing industries, and various performance indicators were identified while implementing the Six Sigma methodology. Case studies pertaining to service industries were not covered here.

Originality/value

Very little research has been carried out to measure the overall success of implementing Six Sigma methodology in manufacturing industries. This paper will provide value to students, researchers and practitioners of Six Sigma by providing insight into the implementation of Six Sigma in manufacturing industries.
