Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to study the attitude of the employees toward organizational commitment and its impact on organizational effectiveness and, second, to develop a strategic model for organizational commitment and organizational effectiveness.

Design/methodology/approach

A conceptual model was suggested to determine the variables influencing school teachers’ organizational commitment and the role of organizational commitment to organizational efficiency with prosocial behavior as the moderating variable. Structural equation modeling was used to investigate the relationship between suggested factors using a sample of 298 state and private school teachers in and around a metropolitan city of India.

Findings

The results of this study showed that, except performance appraisal and assessment of the employees, employee personality and relationship with coworkers, all other constructs significantly affected organizational commitment. The positive influence of organizational commitment to organizational effectiveness was also moderated by prosocial behavior. Demography exerted a significant impact on organizational commitment.

Originality/value

Organizational commitment is comparatively a new topic of research, and in the school education sector, little work was conducted. Hence, the results can be generalized to gain the future direction of organizational commitment in educational research, and it can also be improvised in the corporate sector.

Abstract

Computer aided design systems are routinely used by designers for creating part geometries. Interfaces to computer aided analysis and manufacturing are also commonplace enabling the rapid fabrication of the designed part. Thus far, however, the focus was on objects with homogeneous interior. Two recent advances use of functionally graded materials in parts, and layered manufacturing technology have brought to the forefront the need for CAD systems to support the creation of geometry as well as the graded material inside. This paper reports on such a system. We describe the need, the components and implementation of a CAD system for creating heterogeneous objects. Two examples illustrate the use.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to investigate the changes in tensile properties of novel functionally graded materials (FGMs) and wafer structures created by direct metal deposition (DMD) additive manufacturing (AM) technology.

Design/methodology/approach

Laser-assisted DMD was used to create two innovative sets of metallic structures – the functionally graded and wafer-layered structures – using pairs of six different engineering alloys in different combinations. These alloys were selected due to their high popularity within a diverse range of industries and engineering applications. The laser-assisted DMD was selected as a suitable technique to create these complex structures because of its capability to deposit more than one alloy powder at a time. After creation of these structures, their tensile strength was tested in a series of tensile tests and the results were compared with those of single alloy samples.

Findings

It was observed that the mechanical properties of FGMs and wafer structure samples were clearly different from those of the single alloy samples, a fact which creates a whole pool of opportunities for development of new materials or structures with desired mechanical properties that cannot be achieved in single alloy parts.

Originality/value

The study demonstrates the application of the DMD process to produce unique structures and materials, which would be high in demand in engineering applications, where metallic parts are exposed to high loads and where excessive tensile stresses may adversely affect the performance of such parts.

Abstract

Purpose

The main purpose of this study is to assess the prevalence of COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy among the general population in Bangladesh and the role of misinformation in this process.

Design/methodology/approach

An online survey was conducted to assess COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy among ordinary citizens. In addition to demographic and vaccine-related information, a five-point Likert scale was used to measure vaccine-related misinformation beliefs and how to counter them. Chi-square tests were used to examine the relationship between demographic variables and vaccine acceptance. A binary logistic regression analysis was conducted to identify vaccine hesitancy by different demographic groups. Nonparametric Mann–Whitney and Kruskal–Wallis tests were performed to determine the significance of difference between demographic groups in terms of their vaccine-related misinformation beliefs. Finally, the total misinformation score was computed to examine the correlation between vaccine hesitancy and the total score.

Findings

This study found that nearly half of the respondents were willing to receive COVID-19 vaccine, whereas more than one third of the participants were unsure about taking the vaccine. Demographic variables (e.g., gender, age and education) were found to be significantly related to COVID-19 vaccine acceptance. The results of binary logistic regression analysis showed that respondents who were below 40 years of age, females and those who had lower education attainments had significantly higher odds of vaccine hesitancy. There were significant differences in participants’ vaccine-related misinformation beliefs based on their demographic characteristics, particularly in the case of educational accomplishments. A highly significant negative correlation was found between total misinformation score and vaccine acceptance.

Research limitations/implications

The survey was conducted online, and therefore, it automatically precluded non-internet users from completing the survey. Further, the number of participants from villages was relatively low. Overall, the results may not be representative of the entire population in Bangladesh.

Practical implications

The findings of this paper could guide government agencies and policymakers in devising appropriate strategies to counter COVID-related misinformation to reduce the level of vaccine hesitancy in Bangladesh.

Originality/value

To the authors’ best knowledge, this study is the first to measure the level of COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy and the influence of misinformation in this process among the general public in Bangladesh.
