Abstract

Purpose

The aim of this paper is to examine the factors that induced people to follow the 2005 Ashes cricket series on television and to explore the implications of these factors for the marketing of English cricket as a brand.

Design/methodology/approach

A total of 427 members of the public who reported that they had watched at least part of the 2005 Ashes series on television were questioned about their motives for having done so. Specific motives were then related to viewing intensity and to an individual's intention to follow cricket in the future.

Findings

The study finds that viewers who had been motivated to watch the Ashes series because of cricket's nostalgic associations with England's past were more likely than others to have followed the series intensively and to state that they would continue to be interested in cricket. Patriotic motivations led to short‐ but not to long‐term support. Social pressure, prior involvement with cricket, and several variables identified from a review of the general academic literature in the sports marketing area also exerted significant influences on future intentions to watch cricket.

Research limitations/implications

It was not feasible to establish the socio‐demographic, cultural and economic backgrounds of individuals who exhibited strong tendencies in relation to the motivations covered by the study. Thus it was not possible to relate these background characteristics to decisions to follow cricket in the longer period.

Practical implications

The results suggest that English cricket may indeed be regarded as a brand, and that certain aspects of cricket's brand identity should be incorporated into marketing communications that promote the sport.

Originality/value

This was the first empirical study to analyse the factors underlying the highly successful rebranding of English cricket that occurred between 1997 and 2004.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to present the results of aerodynamic calculation of impact the main rotor on the fuselage and the tail of a light gyroplane. This kind of vehicle is a type of rotorcraft which uses a non-powered rotor in autorotation to develop lift and engine-powered propeller to provide the thrust. Both of them disturb the flow around the gyroplane body (gyroplane fuselage and tail) and influence on its static stability. The main goal of the presented research was to find the magnitude of this influence. To measure this effect, the main stability derivatives changes of gyroplane body were investigated.

Design/methodology/approach

The CFD analysis of the complete gyroplane was made. Computation was performed for the model of gyroplane which was equipped with the two sub-models of the main rotor and the engine-powered propeller. Both of them were modelled as the actuator discs. This method allows to compute the aerodynamic impact of rotating components on the gyroplane body. All aerodynamic analysis was made by the MGAERO software. The numerical code of the software bases on the Euler flow model. Next, the resulting aerodynamic coefficients were used to calculate the most important stability derivatives of the gyroplane body.

Findings

The result obtained by computation presents the change in the most important aerodynamic coefficients and stability derivatives of the gyroplane body caused by the impact of its main rotor. Moreover, the result includes the change of the aerodynamic coefficients and stability derivatives caused by change of the main rotor configuration (change of rotation rate and angle of incidence) and change of the flight condition (gyroplane angle of attack sideslip angle and flight speed).

Practical implications

Analysis of the main rotor impact will be very useful for evaluation of dynamic stability of the light gyroplane. Moreover, the results will be helpful to design the horizontal and vertical tail for the light gyroplane.

Originality/value

This paper presents the method of the numerical analysis of the static stability of the light gyroplane’s body. The results of analysis present the impact of disturbance generated by the rotating main rotor on the static stability of the gyroplane body. Moreover, the impact of the main rotor configuration change and the flight condition change on the static stability were investigated too. The evaluation of the gyroplane’s body static stability was made by the stability derivatives. The methodology and obtained result will be very useful for analysis of the dynamic stability of the light gyroplanes. Moreover, the results will be helpful during design the main components of the gyroplane like vertical and horizontal tail.

Abstract

There is constant tension within the EU arising from conflicting national interests. One aspect of this which has received little attention is that of conflicting national cultures. In the modern world, culture is mainly transmitted across national borders via the medium of television. This means that the USA, which produces the greater part of world output of TV material, would fill a majority of schedules outside the USA in a free market. Within the EU, some countries find this acceptable whereas others do not, fearing that their national cultures will be destroyed. These tend to be countries with a different language and a history of originating rather than receiving culture. The issue of how much culture can be imported has accordingly dogged the EU for a long period, resulting in many cases before the European Court of Justice and several unsatisfactory attempts to produce a universally acceptable directive on the issue of cross‐border TV.

Suggests that we are in the early stages of an information revolution which will have an effect similar to that of the industrial revolution of the last century. Looks at the development of electronic news production, the technology required and in particular at the services to shipping offered by IMC Ltd. Warns that information should remain public property and care should be taken to ensure that the elderly, the technophobic, the under‐educated and the poor for whom modems and gateways are as alien as Close Encounters, should not be denied their right to information. Concludes that electronic news could replace ink on paper, but only when something better than a PC screen comes into widespread use.

Abstract

Purpose

As companies extend supply chains via direct delivery to consumers, supply chain efficiency depends upon the usability of the online ordering system. The purpose of this paper is to focus on customer order cycle efficiency gains through the “learnability” of web sites.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper analyzes empirical data using nonlinear regression from seven firms and over 4,000 customers to examine how order time – an important performance metric – changes within an online grocery ordering environment.

Findings

The evidence supports various forms of power‐law learning for web‐based ordering (i.e. the first few orders involve substantial learning). However, significant differences exist between web sites, and a portion of the ordering time may be irreducible.

Research limitations/implications

The research lends insight into how web sites influence last‐mile supply chain efficiency via differing learning rates in the order cycle. Perceptual measures were used in order to assess customer beliefs.

Practical implications

Online order entry serves as the starting point for many supply chain actions. Managers can use this research to benchmark their web site performance and subsequently take action to improve the efficiency and service of their supply chain.

Originality/value

The empirically validated model allows researchers and web‐based businesses to utilize the provided learning rate measure as an ease of use performance metric.
