Abstract

Describes Ford′s plans to replace the supply system at its largest car‐assembly plant by a full JIT‐type of supply system where linkages with suppliers are controlled by a computer network. A feasibility study and a cost/benefit analysis of this new supply system have been made. The operation involves in‐plant modifications; new material handling equipment; standardisation of packaging material; new procedures for transport; identification; reception and invoicing, etc.

Abstract

Purpose

This study investigated the influence of marketing- and family-related factors on consumers' in-store usage of different types of food label information. Furthermore, the authors determined the mediating role of consumers' knowledge about healthy foods between these factors and their label consultation.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors conducted a survey among 223 purposively selected South African working female consumers via social media. Subjective and objective knowledge about healthy foods, the importance of marketing- and family-related factors and the extent of food label usage were determined. Structural equation modelling served to test the mediating effect of knowledge in the relationship of the marketing and family-related factors with food label usage.

Findings

Marketing-related factors demonstrated a strong direct effect on food label usage. Subjective knowledge about healthy foods mediated the relationship between family members' dietary needs and food label usage. However, objective knowledge was not a mediator.

Practical implications

Respondents' firm reliance on marketing-related factors (instead of knowledge) during food label usage is not in the best interest of consumers' healthy food choices. Healthy food choices based on factual knowledge rather than marketing efforts are necessary to establish long-term healthy food habits, hence the need for retailers' response in supplying healthier food options. Role players in consumer education should focus on increasing consumers' healthy food knowledge.

Originality/value

In the context of rising awareness of public health concerns, healthy food choice among consumers is essential. This study contributes to the complexity of consumers' need to make healthy food choices within an economic-driven marketing environment.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to identify regional foods and analyze its use on school menus of a Brazilian city, as well as the respect to symbolic and cultural aspects related to it.

Design/methodology/approach

The study was conducted in two stages. In the first stage, regional foods were identified through interviews with key school meal and city agents. In the second stage, the inclusion of these foods in school menus from 2009 to 2013 was assessed.

Findings

In total, 142 regional foods were identified and classified into four groups. This classification resulted in a decision tree model to identify regional foods. Approximately 45 percent of regional preparations and 82.5 percent of regional foods were offered totaling 455 preparations and 977 foods analyzed. However, 31 percent of the regional foods identified in Stage 1 were not offered in the menus analyzed. Various regional preparations lost their authenticity, possibly not being recognized because of a lack of traditional ingredients or because they contained non-regional foods that changed their character.

Practical implications

The results mainly point to symbolic aspects of the production and consumption of regional foods and preparations that are important to promoting healthy diets. In addition, they can support public policies that promote the use of these foods in the school environment.

Originality/value

This study analyzes the inclusion of regional foods in school meals--a topic rarely explored in the scientific literature – and proposes a decision tree model to identify regional foods with methodological rigor. This model can assist school food managers in including regional foods and developing studies related to this topic.

Abstract

As Professor Joad used to say — “It all depends what you mean by…” In this instance it all depends what you mean by future aircraft designs. There are many parameters which must be examined when choosing materials for any specific project, these involve material and manufacturing costs, aircraft performance, material performance and costs to the user such as damage tolerance, maintenance costs etc. The way in which these parameters are interwoven will depend considerably on the type of project being undertaken. A light aircraft for the Tiger Club would require a different mix of criteria to an advanced combat aircraft for the RAF. These in turn would be different from the selection that would be made for a one‐shot vehicle such as a booster rocket. In order to narrow this field we will concentrate on the type of aircraft which is typical of Kingston designs, the small high performance aircraft for use by the Air Forces of the world.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present the evolution of Brazilian food patterns, based on the 2002-2003 and 2008-2009 Brazilian Household Budget Surveys (POFs), and to evaluate similarities in food acquisition among the Brazilian states, in search for the main drivers of the changes.

Design/methodology/approach

Using the data gathered from the 17 food groups within the POFs and multidimensional scaling, the Brazilian states were divided into groups and analysed according to their similarities in terms of annual per capita household food acquisition.

Findings

The study’s results point to five groups with similarities in terms of food acquisition among the Brazilian states. Additionally, the issues that reflect Brazil’s diversity were discussed, highlighting possible factors that caused the movement of some states between groups during the analysis period. The heterogeneity observed in food acquisition in Brazil emphasises Brazilian agribusiness development and underscores the influence of the food supply chains on the regional food patterns.

Originality/value

This research presents the geographic changes in the Brazilian agribusiness, and how these changes are reflected in the population food patterns and in the heterogeneity in food acquisition among the Brazilian states. Concerning this work, supply chains of agri-industrial products focussed on the domestic market can be analysed in depth, offering guidelines for future research in logistics and agri-industrial economy.

Abstract

Reports the outcome of research conducted as part of a project funded by the Learning and Technology Support Network – Information and Computing Studies Group (LTSN‐ICS). The paper deals with the issues perceived as being important “barriers” to using technology in teaching and learning within the academic staff community working in higher education in the UK. Data were gathered from a critical analysis of the literature, the administration of a questionnaire survey and a series of interviews with academic staff. Empirical data are used to verify some of the contentions from the literature review and to contextualise these (mainly US‐based publications) in terms of the experience of UK academics. The overall picture which emerges when examining a range of initiatives currently being undertaken across a range of academic institutions is that developments are often led by the enthusiasm of individuals with little extrinsic reward structure to encourage these innovations.
