Abstract

Purpose

To capture the last hour momentum over the intraday session, the authors develop a trading strategy for the exchange-traded fund (ETF) that is effective because of the T+0 trading rule. This strategy generates annualized excess return of 9.673%.

Design/methodology/approach

In this study, the authors identify a last hour momentum pattern in which the sixth (seventh) half-hour return predicts the next half-hour return by employing high frequency 2012–2017 data from the China Securities Index (CSI) 300 and its ETF.

Findings

Overall, both the predictability and the trading strategy are statistically and economically significant. In addition, the strategy performs more strongly on high volatility days, high trading volume days, high order-imbalance days and days without economic news releases than on other days.

Originality/value

Noise trading, late-information trading, infrequent rebalancing and disposition effects from retail investors may account for this phenomenon.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to solve the problem of path planning and path tracking in the automatic parking assistant system.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper first uses the method of reverse driving to confirm few control points based on the constraints of the construction of the vehicle and the environment information, then a reference path with free-collision and continuous curvature is designed based on the Bézier curve. According to the principle of the discrete linear quadratic regulator (LQR), a tracking controller that combines feedforward control and feedback control is designed.

Findings

Finally, simulation analysis are carried out in Simulink and CARSIM. The results show that the proposed method can obtain a better path tracking effect when the parking space size is appropriate.

Originality/value

According to the principle of the discrete LQR, a tracking controller that combines feedforward control and feedback control is designed.

Abstract

Purpose

Based on the socioemotional wealth theory, this study aims to empirically investigate how founder reign, that is a founder serving as a cheif executive officer (CEO) or chairman, influences family firms' research and development (R&D) investment in emerging economies (e.g. China).

Design/methodology/approach

This study empirically tested the hypotheses based on a sample of listed Chinese family companies from 2008 to 2018.

Findings

Founder reign has a negative impact on family firms' R&D investment. Particularly, the negative impact of the founder serving as chairman on family firms' R&D investment is larger than the negative impact of the founder serving as CEO on family firms' R&D investment. Founder's military experience weakens the negative impact of founder reign on family firms' R&D investment, but founder's executive master of business administration (E)MBA experience has no moderating effect on this relationship.

Originality/value

First, the authors contribute to the family firm innovation literature by providing an alternative but complementary explanation of why family firms have relatively low R&D investment levels. This research shows that founder reign is a key reason for family firms in China eschewing R&D investment. Second, by incorporating the founder serving as CEO and the founder serving as chairman into the analytical framework, and then examining their impact on family firms' R&D investment, our research helps us to fully understand the impact of founder reign on firm strategic actions. Third, we contribute to the “founder reign-firm strategic actions” framework by revealing how founders' human capital profoundly affects the relationship between founder reign and family firms' R&D investment.

Abstract

Purpose

A three-dimensional (3D) printing error simulation approach is proposed to analyze the influence of tilted vertical beams on the 3D printing accuracy. The purpose of this study is to analyze the influence of such errors on printing accuracy and printing quality for delta-robot 3D printer.

Design/methodology/approach

First, the kinematic model of a delta-robot 3D printer with an ideal geometric structure is proposed by using vector analysis. Then, the normal kinematic model of a nonideal delta-robot 3D robot with tilted vertical beams is derived based on the above ideal kinematic model. Finally, a 3D printing error simulation approach is proposed to analyze the influence of tilted vertical beams on the 3D printing accuracy.

Findings

The results show that tilted vertical beams can indeed cause 3D printing errors and further influence the 3D printing quality of the final products and that the 3D printing errors of tilted vertical beams are related to the rotation angles of the tilted vertical beams. The larger the rotation angles of the tilted vertical beams are, the greater the geometric deformations of the printed structures.

Originality/value

Three vertical beams and six horizontal beams constitute the supporting parts of the frame of a delta-robot 3D printer. In this paper, the orientations of tilted vertical beams are shown to have a significant influence on 3D printing accuracy. However, the effect of tilted vertical beams on 3D printing accuracy is difficult to capture by instruments. To reveal the 3D printing error mechanisms under the condition of tilted vertical beams, the error generation mechanism and the quantitative influence of tilted vertical beams on 3D printing accuracy are studied by simulating the parallel motion mechanism of a delta-robot 3D printer with tilted vertical beams.

Abstract

Purpose

In the Lorentz Heisenberg space H3 endowed with flat metric g3, a translation surface is parametrized by r(x, y) = γ1(x)*γ2(y), where γ1 and γ2 are two planar curves lying in planes, which are not orthogonal. In this article, we classify translation surfaces in H3, which satisfy some algebraic equations in terms of the coordinate functions and the Laplacian operator with respect to the first fundamental form of the surface.

Design/methodology/approach

In this paper, we classify some type of space-like translation surfaces of H3 endowed with flat metric g3 under the conditionΔri = λiri. We will develop the system which describes surfaces of type finite in H3. For solve the system thus obtained, we will use the calculation variational. Finally, we will try to give performances geometric surfaces that meet the condition imposed.

Findings

Classification of six types of translation surfaces of finite type in the three-dimensional Lorentz Heisenberg group H3.

Originality/value

The subject of this paper lies at the border of geometry differential and spectral analysis on manifolds. Historically, the first research on the study of sub-finite type varieties began around the 1970 by B.Y.Chen. The idea was to find a better estimate of the mean total curvature of a compact subvariety of a Euclidean space. In fact, the notion of finite type subvariety is a natural extension of the notion of a minimal subvariety or surface, a notion directly linked to the calculation of variations. The goal of this work is the classification of surfaces in H3, in other words the surfaces which satisfy the condition/Delta (ri) = /Lambda (ri), such that the Laplacian is associated with the first, fundamental form.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to provide the high-pass (HP) negative group delay (NGD) circuit based (RL) network. Synthesis and experimental investigation of HP-NGD circuit are developed.

Design/methodology/approach

The research work methodology is organized in three phases. The definition of the HP-NGD ideal specifications is introduced. The synthesis method allowing to determine the RL elements is developed. The validation results are discussed with comparison between the calculated model, simulation and measurement.

Findings

This paper shows a validation of the HP-NGD theory with responses confirming NGD optimal frequency, value and attenuation of about (9 kHz, −1.12 µs, −1.64 dB) and (21 kHz, −0.92 µs, −4.81 dB) are measured. The tested circuits have experimented NGD cut-off frequencies around 5 and 11.7 kHz.

Research limitations/implications

The validity of the HP-NGD topology depends on the coil self-inductance resonance. The HP-NGD effect is susceptible to be penalized by the parasitic elements of the self.

Practical implications

The NGD circuit is usefully exploited in the electronic and communication system to reduce the undesired delay effect context. The NGD can be used to compensate the delay in any electronic devices and system.

Social implications

Applications based on the NGD technology will be helpful in the communication, transportation and security research fields by reducing the delay inherent to any electronic circuit.

Originality/value

The originality of the paper concerns the synthesis formulations of the RL elements in function of the expected HP-NGD optimal frequency, value and attenuation. In addition, an original measurement technique of HP-NGD is also introduced.

Abstract

Purpose

The object of the paper is to illustrate how to obtain the topological derivative as a semidifferential in a general and practical mathematical setting for d-dimensional perturbations of a bounded open domain in the n-dimensional Euclidean space.

Design/methodology/approach

The underlying methodology uses mathematical notions and powerful tools with ready to check assumptions and ready to use formulas via theorems on the one-sided derivative of parametrized minima and minimax.

Findings

The theory and the examples indicate that the methodology applies to a wide range of problems: (1) compliance and (2) state constrained objective functions where the coupled state/adjoint state equations appear without a posteriori substitution of the adjoint state.

Research limitations/implications

Direct approach that considerably simplifies the analysis and computations.

Originality/value

It was known that the shape derivative was a differential. But the topological derivative is only a semidifferential, that is, a one-sided directional derivative, which is not linear with respect to the direction, and the directions are d-dimensional bounded measures.

Purpose

Distribution. The purpose of this study is to obtain the modified maximum likelihood estimator of stress–strength model using the ranked set sampling, to obtain the asymptotic and bootstrap confidence interval of P[Y < X], to compare the performance of author’s estimates with the estimates under simple random sampling and to apply author’s estimates on head and neck cancer.

Design/methodology/approach

The maximum likelihood estimator of R = P[Y < X], where X and Y are two independent inverse Weibull random variables common shape parameter that affect the shape of the distribution, and different scale parameters that have an effect on the distribution dispersion are given under ranked set sampling. Together with the asymptotic and bootstrap confidence interval, Monte Carlo simulation shows that this estimator performs better than the estimator under simple random sampling. Also, the asymptotic and bootstrap confidence interval under ranked set sampling is better than these interval estimators under simple random sampling. The application to head and neck cancer disease data shows that the estimator of R = P[Y < X] that shows the treatment with radiotherapy is more efficient than the treatment with a combined radiotherapy and chemotherapy under ranked set sampling that is better than these estimators under simple random sampling.

Findings

The ranked set sampling is more effective than the simple random sampling for the inference of stress-strength model based on inverse Weibull distribution.

Originality/value

This study sheds light on the author’s estimates on head and neck cancer.

Abstract

Purpose

The economic value generated by a firm is determined by the efficient management of its resources within a given business environment. The Indian pharmaceutical industry is highly competitive and has attracted huge investments in research and development (R&D), including financing of biotechnological ventures, clinical trials, contract research activities in addition to traditional product development and filing of regulatory requirements. This study aims to identify the specific resources that are significant drivers of performance.

Design/methodology/approach

Data analysis uses panel regression based on an extended version of the Cobb-Douglas production function, where the dependent variable firm performance is measured using annual sales whilst the independent variables include labour, capital, R&D investments and marketing efforts. This study uses data spanning a period of 7 years (2012–2018) collected from 151 Indian pharmaceutical firms.

Findings

Contrary to the general understanding that R&D investments tend to create profitable opportunities, it is observed that R&D expenditures have a negative impact on sales in the short to medium time period. This study also highlights the finding that in addition to the positive impact of labour and capital, marketing efforts are more likely to have a greater positive influence on firm performance than R&D.

Originality/value

The uniqueness of the paper lies not only in the counterintuitive findings but also in the methodology used to capture the impact of the lagged effect of R&D investments on firm performance. Specifically, a regression model-based both on panel data and time-series averages is used to examine the said impact.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to identify factors that are important for logistics organizations from the perspective of manpower readiness for digitization of logistics operations. The study also prioritizes the identified factors and also evaluates the readiness index of manpower for the digitalization of logistics processes.

Design/methodology/approach

The factors for manpower readiness are identified through literature review and analysis of a case study. Three major categories of factors are identified. These are organizational, behavioural and technological factors. Under these three major categories of factors, 18 sub-factors are identified. Thereafter, with experts' inputs, the factors are prioritized using Fuzzy analytic hierarchy process (AHP). Further, a case illustration of an Indian logistics company has been taken to understand the current processes, technical capabilities, manpower skills and organization culture. After the case analysis and expert inputs, the manpower readiness index has been evaluated by using graph theory matrix approach (GTMA).

Findings

The prioritization of manpower readiness factors has been done using Fuzzy AHP. Organizational factors are found to be the most important factors which require quick attention. Sub-factors that are most important for building competencies in the logistics sector are providing the right training on functional skill development (0.129), top management support and commitment for digitalization (0.117), and organizational culture for process digitalization (0.114), etc. Finally, framework for evaluation of manpower readiness index for logistics operations in the digital age has been illustrated for a case company.

Practical implications

Indian logistics companies can benchmark their readiness index with respect to the best in the industry. Based on the readiness index, logistics companies can analyse their position, gaps from best and worst and can also identify potential areas for improvement.

Originality/value

The novelty of the study lies in the development of a framework for manpower readiness for digitalization in the logistics sector. In literature, this field is very less researched and provides the scope for developing strategies for improving manpower competencies for Industry 4.0. Logistics companies can improve their performance by making their manpower ready based on results obtained for readiness index.
