Abstract

Historical stock prices have long been used to evaluate a stock’s future returns as well as the risks associated with those returns. Similarly, historical dividends have been used to evaluate the intrinsic value of a stock using, among other methods, a dividend discount model. In this chapter, we propose an alternate use of the dividend discount model to enable an investor to assess the risks associated with a particular stock based on its dividend history. In traditional applications of the dividend discount model for stock valuation, the value of a stock is the net present value of its future cash dividends. We propose an alternative approach in which we calculate the internal rate of return for a stream of future cash dividends assuming the current stock price. We use a bootstrapping approach to generate a stream of future cash dividends, and use a Monte Carlo simulation approach to run multiple trials of the model. The probability distribution of the internal rates of return obtained from the simulation model provides an investor with an expected percentage return and the standard deviation of the return for the stock. This allows an investor to not only compare the expected internal rates of return for a group of stocks but to also evaluate the associated risks. We illustrate this internal rate of return approach using stocks that make up the Dow Jones Industrial Average.

Abstract

Purpose

Path planning is a fundamental and significant issue in robotics research, especially for the legged robots, since it is the core technology for robots to complete complex tasks such as autonomous navigation and exploration. The purpose of this paper is to propose a path planning and tracking framework for the autonomous navigation of hexapod robots.

Design/methodology/approach

First, a hexapod robot called Hexapod-Mini is briefly introduced. Then a path planning algorithm based on improved A* is proposed, which introduces the artificial potential field (APF) factor into the evaluation function to generate a safe and collision-free initial path. Then we apply a turning point optimization based on the greedy algorithm, which optimizes the number of turns of the path. And a fast-turning trajectory for hexapod robot is proposed, which is applied to path smoothing. Besides, a model predictive control-based motion tracking controller is used for path tracking.

Findings

The simulation and experiment results show that the framework can generate a safe, fast, collision-free and smooth path, and the author’s Hexapod robot can effectively track the path that demonstrates the performance of the framework.

Originality/value

The work presented a framework for autonomous path planning and tracking of hexapod robots. This new approach overcomes the disadvantages of the traditional path planning approach, such as lack of security, insufficient smoothness and an excessive number of turns. And the proposed method has been successfully applied to an actual hexapod robot.

Abstract

Purpose

Research and development (R&D) is increasingly considered to be a key driver of economic growth. The relationship between these variables is commonly examined using linear models and thus relies only on single-point estimates. Against this background, this paper provides new evidence on the impact of R&D on economic growth using a machine learning approach that makes it possible to go beyond single-point estimation.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors use the kernel regularized least squares (KRLS) approach, a machine learning method designed for tackling econometric models without imposing arbitrary functional forms on the relationship between the outcome variable and the covariates. The KRLS approach learns the functional form from the data and thus yields consistent estimates that are robust to functional form misspecification. It also provides pointwise marginal effects and captures non-linear relationships. The empirical analyses are conducted using a sample of 101 countries over the period 2000–2020.

Findings

The estimates indicate that R&D expenditure and high-tech exports positively and significantly influence economic growth in a non-linear manner. The authors also find a positive and statistically significant relationship between economic growth and greenhouse gas emissions. In both cases, the effects are higher for upper-middle-income and high-income countries. These results suggest that a substantial effort is needed to green economic growth. Internet access is found to be an important factor in supporting economic growth, especially in high-income and middle-income countries.

Practical implications

This paper contributes to underlining the importance of investing in R&D to support growth and shows that the disparity between countries is driven by the determinants of economic growth (human capital in R&D, high-tech exports, Internet access, economic freedom, unemployment rate and greenhouse gas emissions). Moreover, since the authors find that R&D expenditure and greenhouse gas emissions are positively associated with economic growth, technological progress with green characteristics may be an important pathway for green economic growth.

Originality/value

This paper uses an innovative machine learning method to provide new evidence that innovation supports economic growth.

Abstract

Purpose

Due to product value uncertainty, consumers do not know the product matching rate before they get the product, which is the probability of product fitness. Taking the consumers’ anticipated regret into account, this paper aims to develop a theoretical model to explore how the anticipated regret affects pricing and advertising decisions and profits of retailers in the online to offline (O2O) supply chain.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper considers an O2O supply chain consisting of an e-retailer and a brick-and-mortar retailer; both retailers cooperate to provide buying online and pick up in-store (BOPS) for consumers.

Findings

It shows three major findings. Retailers should decide whether to introduce BOPS channel according to the matching rate of the product when the BOPS channel is not very convenient for consumers. When the BOPS channel does not exist in the market, the profits of two retailers increase with the online regret of consumers, while the BOPS channel exists in the market and the matching rate of the product is low, the higher offline regret can enable both retailers to increase the profits; furthermore, when the matching rate is high, the higher degree of online regret can bring more profit to the O2O supply chain. Therefore, both retailers can take measures together to induce consumers’ regrets according to the different matching rates, which makes both retailers obtain more profits. Counterintuitively, consumer surplus will not always increase due to consideration of anticipated regret.

Research limitations/implications

The model has some limitations that are worth further discussing. First, in practice, the O2O supply chain includes many forms except the BOPS channel, for example, order online and pick-up in-store (ROPS) channel; future research can discuss and consider the impact of consumers’ anticipated regret on ROPS. Second, the authors consider that O2O is a supply chain composed of two retailers. In reality, there is also a situation where an oligopoly retailer opens two channels to realize O2O supply chain, in the case the inventory decision-making of the product is worth studying. Finally, to highlight the impact of the anticipated regret on consumers’ decision-making, the return of the product is not considered. Future research can take the return of the product into account to assess the robustness of the results.

Originality/value

The contributions are in two main aspects. First, this paper considers an O2O supply chain with consumer value uncertainty, where there are duopoly retailers in the market and most of the existing literature focus on oligopoly retailer operates both online and offline channels; meanwhile, consumers’ value perceptions of the product is deterministic. Second, this paper explores how the consumer anticipated channel regret affects the pricing and advertising decisions of O2O supply chain, and the authors take behavioral theory into account when studying omnichannel operations, while most studies on anticipated regret consider traditional two-stage price reduction management, product innovation, etc.

Abstract

Purpose

This research attempts to present a solid transportation problem (STP) mechanism in uncertain and indeterminate contexts, allowing decision makers to select their acceptance, indeterminacy and untruth levels.

Design/methodology/approach

Due to the lack of reliable information, changeable economic circumstances, uncontrolled factors and especially variable conditions of available resources to adapt to the real situations, the authors are faced with a kind of uncertainty and indeterminacy in constraints and the nature of the parameters of STP. Therefore, an approach based on neutrosophic logic is offered to make it more applicable to real-world circumstances. In this study, the triangular neutrosophic numbers (TNNs) have been utilized to represent demand, transportation capacity, accessibility and cost. Then, the neutrosophic STP was converted into an interval programming problem with the help of the variation degree concept. Then, two simple linear programming models were extracted to obtain the lower and upper bounds of the optimal solution.

Findings

The results reveal that the new model is not complicated but more flexible and more relevant to real-world issues. In addition, it is evident that the suggested algorithm is effective and allows decision makers to specify their acceptance, indeterminacy and falsehood thresholds.

Originality/value

Under the transportation literature, there are several solutions for TP and STP in crisp, fuzzy set (FS) and intuitionistic fuzzy set (IFS) conditions. However, the STP has never been explored in connection with neutrosophic sets to the best of the authors’ knowledge. So, this work tries to fill this gap by coming up with a new way to solve this model using NSs.

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to test the capability to properly analyze the electrical circuits of a novel constitutive relation of capacitor.

Design/methodology/approach

For ceteris paribus, the constitutive relations of the resistor and inductor have been reformulated by following the novel constitutive relation of capacitor. The responses of RL, RC, LC and RLC circuits defined on the fractal set described by these definitions have been derived by means of the fractal calculus and fractal Laplace transformation. A comparative Hamiltonian formalism-based analysis has been performed where the circuits described by the conventional and the formerly proposed revisited constitutive relations have also been considered.

Findings

This study has found that the novel constitutive relations give unreasonable results unlike the conventional ones. Like such previous revisited constitutive relations, an odd Hamiltonian has been obtained. On the other hand, the conventional constitutive relations give a reasonable Hamiltonian.

Originality/value

To the best of the author’s knowledge, for the first time, the analysis of fractal set defined electrical circuits by means of unconventional constitutive relations has been performed where the deficiency of the tested capacitive constitutive relation has been pointed out.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to numerically study the buoyant convective flow of two different nanofluids in a porous annular domain. A uniformly heated inner cylinder, cooled outer cylindrical boundary and adiabatic horizontal surfaces are considered because of many industrial applications of this geometry. The analysis also addresses the comparative study of different porous media models governing fluid flow and heat transport.

Design/methodology/approach

The finite difference method has been used in the current simulation work to obtain the numerical solution of coupled partial differential equations. In particular, the alternating direction implicit method is used for solving transient equations, and the successive line over relaxation iterative method is used to solve time-independent equation by choosing an optimum value for relaxation parameter. Simpson’s rule is adopted to estimate average Nusselt number involving numerical integration. Various grid sensitivity checks have been performed to assess the sufficiency of grid size to obtain accurate results. In this analysis, a general porous media model has been considered, and a comparative study between three different models has been investigated.

Findings

Numerical simulations are performed for different combinations of the control parameters and interesting results are obtained. It has been found that the an increase in Darcy and Rayleigh numbers enhances the thermal transport rate and strengthens the nanofluid movement in porous annulus. Also, higher flow circulation rate and thermal transport has been detected for Darcy model as compared to non-Darcy models. Thermal mixing could be enhanced by considering a non-Darcy model.

Research limitations/implications

The present results could be effectively used in many practical applications under the limiting conditions of two-dimensionality and axi-symmetry conditions. The only drawback of the current study is it does not include the three-dimensional effects.

Practical implications

The results could be used as a first-hand information for the design of any thermal systems. This will help the design engineer to have fewer trial-and-run cases for the new design.

Originality/value

A pioneering numerical investigation on the buoyant convective flow of two different nanofluids in an annular porous domain has been carried out by using a general Darcy–Brinkman–Forchheimer model to govern fluid flow in porous matrix. The results obtained from current investigation are novel and original, with numerous practical applications of nanofluid saturated porous annular enclosure in the modern industry.
