The aim of this research is to establish a new type of aggregation operator based on Hamacher operational law of spherical uncertain linguistic numbers (SULNs).

Abstract

Purpose

The aim of this research is to establish a new type of aggregation operator based on Hamacher operational law of spherical uncertain linguistic numbers (SULNs).

Design/methodology/approach

First, the authors define spherical uncertain linguistic sets and develop some operational laws of SULNs. Furthermore, the authors extended these operational laws to the aggregation operator and developed spherical uncertain linguistic Hamacher averaging and geometric aggregation operators.

Findings

The authors were limited in achieving a consistent opinion on the fusion in group decision-making problem with the SULN information.

Originality/value

In order to give an application of the introduced operators, the authors first constrict a system of multi-attribute decision-making algorithm.

This paper aims to examine the relationship between global value chains (GVCs) and domestic value-added content (DVA) in a panel of 58 countries for the period 2005–2015.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to examine the relationship between global value chains (GVCs) and domestic value-added content (DVA) in a panel of 58 countries for the period 2005–2015.

Design/methodology/approach

First, the authors quantify the refined measures of GVC linkages by using the Borin and Mancini (2019) decomposition technique. Second, the authors apply the feasible generalised least squares method to test the relationship between GVCs and DVA empirically.

Findings

First, the authors find that GVC links are crucial to the enhancement of DVA. Second, a study at the sectoral level reveals that GVC links in the primary sector raise DVA whilst reducing DVA in the services sector. Third, the authors find that only upstream activities enhance value-added content. Fourth, the authors note the augmenting role played by national policies in mediating the gains associated with GVCs. Finally, the authors note that the outcomes associated with GVCs are consistent when the sample of countries is divided into groups based on income.

Practical implications

The results lead us to urge policymakers to promote greater integration of business activities into GVCs to reap their benefits.

Originality/value

This paper contributes to the research on the impact of GVCs on DVA by emphasising the significance of the types of GVC activities and policies that improve DVA.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to examine whether and how the power of a chief executive officer (CEO) relates to firm-level research and development (R&D) investment.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors use clustered standard errors ordinary least squares regression using a large sample of US firms from 1994 to 2017.

Findings

The authors find a significant negative relation between CEO power and R&D investment, suggesting that firms with more powerful CEOs are less likely to invest in R&D activities. Besides, the study finds that this significant negative relation is largely driven by firms with weaker corporate governance.

Originality/value

This study contributes to the finance literature on the impact and consequences of having powerful CEOs and the financial accounting literature on the determinants of R&D expenditures.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to design a reliable multi-level, multi-product and multi-period location-inventory-routing three-echelon supply chain network, which considers disruption risks and uncertainty in the inventory system.

Design/methodology/approach

A robust optimization approach is used to deal with the effects of uncertainty, and a mixed-integer nonlinear programming multi-objective model is proposed. The first objective function seeks to minimize inventory costs, such as ordering costs, holding costs and carrying costs. It also helps to choose one of the two modes of bearing the expenses of shortage or using the excess capacity to produce at the expense of each. The second objective function seeks to minimize the risk of disruption in distribution centers and suppliers, thereby increasing supply chain reliability. As the proposed model is an non-deterministic polynomial-time-hard model, the Lagrangian relaxation algorithm is used to solve it.

Findings

The proposed model is applied to a real supply chain in the aftermarket automotive service industry. The results of the model and the current status of the company under study are compared, and suggestions are made to improve the supply chain performance. Using the proposed model, companies are expected to manage the risk of supply chain disruptions and pay the lowest possible costs in the event of a shortage. They can also use reverse logistics to minimize environmental damage and use recycled goods.

Originality/value

In this paper, the problem definition is based on a real case; it is about the deficiencies in the after-sale services in the automobile industry. It considers the disruption risk at the first level of the supply chain, selects the supplier considering the parameters of price and disruption risk and examines surplus capacity over distributors’ nominal capacity.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper designs an optimal closed-loop supply chain network with an integrated forward and reverse logistics to examine the possibility of remanufacturing end-of-life (EoL) ships.

Design/methodology/approach

Explanatory variables are used to estimate the number of EoL ships available in a closed-loop supply chain network. The estimated number of EoL ships is used as an input in the model and then it is solved by a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) model of the closed-loop supply chain network to minimise the total logistic costs. A discounted payback period formula is developed to calculate the length of time to recoup an investment based on the investment's discounted cash flows. Existing ship wrecking industry clusters in the Western region of India are used as the case study to apply the proposed model.

Findings

The MILP model has optimised the total logistics costs of the closed-loop supply network and ascertained the optimal number and location of remanufacturing for building EoL ships. The capital and variable costs required for establishing and operating remanufacturing centres are computed. To remanufacture 30 ships a year, the discounted payback period of this project is estimated to be less than two years.

Practical implications

Ship manufacturing businesses are yet to re-manufacture EoL ships, given high upfront capital expenditure and operational challenges. This study provides management insights into the costs and benefits of EoL ship remanufacturing; thus, informing the decision-makers to make strategic operational decisions.

Originality/value

The design of an optimal close loop supply chain network coupled with a Bayesian network approach and discounted payback period formula for the collection and remanufacturing of EoL ships provides a new integrated perspective to ship manufacturing.

Abstract

Purpose

Organizational innovations are closely associated with organizational knowledge, and thus a firm builds its knowledge base to enhance its innovative performance. However, insights into this process are still limited, especially in the context of firms in developing countries. Building on the dynamic managerial capabilities literature and open innovation paradigm, this paper attempts to fill this gap by developing and empirically testing a model that investigates how firms in developing countries accumulate knowledge to innovate.

Design/methodology/approach

A model of a firm's knowledge accumulation and innovation is proposed in which it specifies relationships among absorptive capacity, knowledge breadth, research and development (R&D), knowledge depth, exploratory innovation and exploitative innovation, and then it is empirically tested by using the structural equation modeling (SEM) technique based on the surveyed data of Vietnamese firms.

Findings

The results indicate that absorptive capacity positively influences both knowledge breadth and knowledge depth, knowledge breadth positively influences R&D, R&D positively influences exploratory innovation and knowledge depth, and knowledge depth positively influences exploratory and exploitative innovation.

Practical implications

The study proposes an “acquire and develop” open innovation model for firms in developing countries in which firms acquire external technologies and then develop R&D (develop and design) capability to adapt acquired technologies to their local conditions to create new organizational-specific capabilities and exploratory innovation.

Originality/value

This study argues that external knowledge acquisition is beneficial to innovative performance of firms in developing countries via renewing their knowledge base. Furthermore, the study provides the unique evidence that novel external knowledge acquisition and internal R&D are fit to each other in the fit-as-mediation form in which novel external knowledge acquisition is mediated by R&D to positively influence exploratory innovation.

Abstract

Purpose

A diffusion-reaction-deformation coupled model is employed and implemented as a user-defined element (UEL) subroutine in the commercial finite element software package ABAQUS.

Design/methodology/approach

Chemical reaction and diffusion are treated as two distinct processes by introducing the extent of reaction and the diffusion concentration as two kinds of independent variables, for which the independent governing equations for chemical reaction and diffusion processes are obtained. Furthermore, an exponential form of chemical kinetics, instead of the linearly phenomenological relation, between the reaction rate and the chemical affinity is used to describe reaction process. As a result, complex chemical reaction can be simulated, no matter it is around or away from equilibrium.

Findings

Two numerical examples are presented, one for validation of the model and another for the modeling of the deflection of a plane caused by a chemical reaction.

Originality/value

1. Independent governing equations for diffusion and reaction processes are given. 2. An exponential relation between the reaction rate and its driving force is employed. 3. The UEL subroutine is used to implement the finite element procedure.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to develop a geometry of moral systems. Existing social choice mechanisms predominantly employ simple structures, such as rankings. A mathematical metric among moral systems allows us to represent complex sets of views in a multidimensional geometry. Such a metric can serve to diagnose structural issues, test existing mechanisms of social choice or engender new mechanisms. It also may be used to replace active social choice mechanisms with information-based passive ones, shifting the operational burden.

Design/methodology/approach

Under reasonable assumptions, moral systems correspond to computational black boxes, which can be represented by conditional probability distributions of responses to situations. In the presence of a probability distribution over situations and a metric among responses, codifying our intuition, we can derive a sensible metric among moral systems.

Findings

Within the developed framework, the author offers a set of well-behaved candidate metrics that may be employed in real applications. The author also proposes a variety of practical applications to social choice, both diagnostic and generative.

Originality/value

The proffered framework, derived metrics and proposed applications to social choice represent a new paradigm and offer potential improvements and alternatives to existing social choice mechanisms. They also can serve as the staging point for research in a number of directions.

Abstract

Design/methodology/approach

The present discussed problem deals with the torsional surface wave scattering in an initially stressed inhomogeneous medium. The assumed model consists of tri-mediums resting over a viscoelastic semi-infinite medium and the considered tri-mediums are transversely isotropic, porous, and heterogeneous respectively under the impression of initial stress.

Design/methodology/approach

Heterogeneities are associated with density and rigidity in the intermediate layer and considered heterogeneities are of the trigonometric form. Displacement components are derived for mediums by applying separable variables.

Findings

Frequency equation is deduced by using suitable boundary conditions, defined at the free surface of the uppermost medium, and on the interfaces between mediums. The derived equation is of the complex form, real and imaginary parts direct the phase/damped velocities respectively. Additional results are considered in particular cases. Numerical examples are adopted for computing frequency equation and drawn consequences are demonstrated graphically to analyze the significant impact of various parameters on the phase velocity as well as on damped velocity of the surface wave sketched against the wavenumber.

Originality/Value

This presented research work provides a different view over the analysis of torsional surface waves than the earlier investigations. Previously studied problems on the wave generation were conducted in different models under the various affecting parameters. Study on torsional wave generation in the present model is not carried out till now. This study may find its virtue in the theoretical aspect as well as in the possible practical implications. The outcomes are relevant to geology and allied areas; moreover, the concern applications may be implicated in geological exploration, civil engineering, and prediction of Earthquake etc.
