Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to explore the relationship between differences in performance and verbal intelligence quotients (PIQ and VIQ) and the four facet scores from the Psychopathy Checklist–Revised (PCL–R) (Hare, 2003).

Design/methodology/approach

Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS) and PCL–R facet scores provided by 181 male federal inmates as part of a forensic evaluation were analyzed with multiple regression, paired t-tests, and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves.

Findings

Of the four PCL–R facet scores, only elevations on Facet 4 (antisocial) produced a significant WAIS-Revised (Wechsler, 1981) PIQ over VIQ (PIQ>VIQ) effect. In addition, only Facet 4 achieved significant ROC accuracy and correlated with the PIQ>VIQ discrepancy after other potentially important variables were controlled. In a follow-up study of 46 male inmates, Facet 4 correlated negatively with the Verbal Comprehension and Working Memory indices of the WAIS–Third Edition (Wechsler, 1997) and accurately classified a significant portion of Perceptual Organization Index (POI)>WMI cases but not a significant portion of POI>VCI cases.

Practical implications

Verbal comprehension and executive function deficits are examined as possible explanations for the relationships observed in this study.

Originality/value

These results have potentially important implications for forensic assessment in that they suggest that only certain specific features of the psychopathy construct are related to the well-known PIQ>VIQ discrepancy.

Abstract

In this paper, we study the different kinds of the primeness on the class of near-rings and we give new characterizations for them. For that purpose, we introduce new concepts called set-divisors, ideal-divisors, etc. and we give equivalent statements for 3-primeness which make 3-primeness looks like the forms of the other kinds of primeness. Also, we introduce a new different kind of primeness in near-rings called K-primeness which lies between 3-primeness and e-primeness. After that, we study different kinds of prime ideals in near-rings and find a connection between them and new concepts called set-attractors, ideal-attractors, etc. to make new characterizations for them. Also, we introduce a new different kind of prime ideals in near-rings called K-prime ideals.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine the learning experiences of high school Black males participating in an academy of engineering that was configured as a magnet school. We followed a qualitative case study design to explore the experiences of 16 Black male academies of engineering students. We identified three recurring themes from the interviews with the Black male academy of engineering students: Promoting Interests in STEM, Drawing Connections to Core Academic Concepts, and An Affinity for Hands-on Learning through the Engineering Curriculum. The results of our study helped us to better understand how academies provide a platform for Black male students' interest in engineering as a viable college and career pathway.

Abstract

High-quality nursing home (NH) care has long been a challenge within the United States. For decades, policymakers at the state and federal levels have adopted and implemented regulations to target critical components of NH care outcomes. Simultaneously, our delivery system continues to change the role of NHs in patient care. For example, more acute patients are cared for in NHs, and the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has implemented value payment programs targeting NH settings. As a part of these growing pressures from the broader healthcare delivery system, the culture-change movement has emerged among NHs over the past two decades, prompting NHs to embody more person-centered care as well as promote settings which resemble someone's home, as opposed to institutionalized healthcare settings.

Researchers have linked culture change to high-quality outcomes and the ability to adapt and respond to the ever-changing pressures brought on by changes in our regulatory and delivery system. Making enduring culture change within organizations has long been a challenge and focus in NHs. Despite research suggesting that culture-change initiatives that promote greater resident-centered care are associated with several desirable patient outcomes, their adoption and implementation by NHs are resource intensive, and research has shown that NHs with high percentages of low-income residents are especially challenged to adopt these initiatives.

This chapter takes a novel approach to examine factors that impact the adoption of culture-change initiatives by assessing knowledge management and the role of knowledge management activities in promoting the adoption of innovative care delivery models among under-resourced NHs throughout the United States. Using primary data from a survey of NH administrators, we conducted logistic regression models to assess the relationship between knowledge management and the adoption of a culture-change initiative as well as whether these relationships were moderated by leadership and staffing stability. Our study found that NHs were more likely to adopt a culture-change initiative when they had more robust knowledge management activities. Moreover, knowledge management activities were particularly effective at promoting adoption in NHs that struggle with leadership and nursing staff instability. Our findings support the notion that knowledge management activities can help NHs acquire and mobilize informational resources to support the adoption of care delivery innovations, thus highlighting opportunities to more effectively target efforts to stimulate the adoption and spread of these initiatives.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to introduce a novel design of the biomimetic quadruped robot, including its body structure, three structural modes and respective workspace.

Design/methodology/approach

By taking a metamorphic 8-bar linkage as the body of a quadruped robot, the authors propose a reconfigurable walking robot that can imitate three kinds of animals: mammals (e.g. dog), arthropods (e.g. stick insect) and reptiles (e.g. lizard). Furthermore, to analyze the three structural modes of this quadruped robot, the workspace is calculated and studied.

Findings

Based on experimental data analyses, it is revealed that the metamorphic quadruped robot can walk in all its three structural modes and adapt to different terrains.

Research limitations/implications

Because the body of the quadruped robot is deformable and reconfigurable, the location of payload is not considered in the current stage.

Practical implications

The relative positions and postures of legs of the metamorphic robot can be rearranged during its body reconfiguration in such a way to combine all the features of locomotion of the three kinds of animals into one robot. So, the metamorphic quadruped robot is capable of maintaining wider stability margins than conventional rigid-body quadruped robots and conducting operations in different environments, particularly the extreme and restricted occasions due to the changeable and adaptable trunk.

Originality/value

The main contribution is the development of a reconfigurable biomimetic quadruped robot, which uses the metamorphic 8-bar linkage. This robot can easily reshape to three different structural modes and mimic the walking patterns of all mammals, arthropods and reptiles.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the manufacturer’s production, pricing and green technology investment decision problem when strategic customer behavior and carbon emissions-sensitive random demand is taken into consideration and discuss the impact of carbon emissions-sensitive demand on the manufacturer’s operation strategies, total carbon emissions and maximum expected profit.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors formulate a model to introduce carbon emissions-sensitive demand into the newsvendor framework with strategic customer behavior. The authors characterize the rational expectations equilibrium to derive the optimal solutions to the manufacturer. The authors analyze the effects of carbon emissions-sensitive demand on the manufacturer’s optimal strategies, total carbon emissions and maximum expected profit by comparative analysis.

Findings

The authors obtain the manufacturer’s optimal production, pricing and green technology investment strategies under rational expectations equilibrium in scenario of price-sensitive demand and that of carbon emissions-sensitive demand, respectively. The authors find that as customer demand changes from price-sensitive demand to carbon emissions-sensitive demand, the manufacturer’s optimal prices are the same but optimal production quantity, optimal unit carbon emissions and maximum expected profit go down. Though the total emissions decrease, the carbon emissions reduction would not increase as the demand is more carbon emissions-sensitive. Whether it increases or decreases depends on the model parameters.

Originality/value

Carbon emissions-sensitive demand and strategic customer behavior are considered simultaneously in an integrated model. The result can guide the manufacturer decision-making. The proposed model are hoped to shed light to the future works in the field of sustainable supply chain management.

Abstract

Purpose

Thus, the purposes of this study are to study the limits of applicability of the self-similar solution to the problem of fluid flow, heat and mass transfer in conical gaps with small conicity angles, to substantiate the impossibility of using a self-similar formulation of the problem in the case of large conicity angles and to substantiate the absence of the need to take into account the radial thermal conductivity in the energy equation in its self-similar formulation for the conicity angles up to 4°.

Design/methodology/approach

In the present work, an in-depth and extended analysis of the features of fluid flow and heat transfer in a conical gap at small angles of conicity up to 4° is performed. The Couette-type flow arising, in this case, was modeled using a self-similar formulation of the problem. A detailed analysis of fluid flow calculations using a self-similar system of equations showed that they provide the best agreement with experiments than other known approaches. It is confirmed that the self-similar system of flow and heat transfer equations is applicable only to small angles of conicity up to 4°, whereas, at large angles of conicity, this approach becomes unreasonable and leads to significantly inaccurate results. The heat transfer process in a conical gap with small angles of conicity can be modeled using the self-similar energy equation in the boundary layer approximation. It was shown that taking into account the radial thermal conductivity in the self-similar energy equation at small conicity angles up to 4° leads to maximum deviations of the Nusselt number up to 1.5% compared with the energy equation in the boundary layer approximation without taking into account the radial thermal conductivity.

Findings

It is confirmed that the self-similar system of fluid flow equations is applicable only for small conicity angles up to 4°. The inclusion of radial thermal conductivity in the model unnecessarily complicates the mathematical formulation of the problem and at small conicity angles up to 4° leads to insignificant deviations of the Nusselt number (maximum 1.5%). Heat transfer in a conical gap with small conicity angles up to 4° can be modeled using the self-similar energy equation in the boundary layer approximation.

Originality/value

This paper investigates the question of the validity of taking into account the radial heat conduction in the energy equation.

Abstract

Purpose

Accordingly to the recent multi-scale model proposed by Sih and Tang, different orders of stress singularities are related to different material dependent boundary conditions associated with the interaction between the V-notch tip and the material under the remotely applied loading conditions. This induces complex three-dimensional stress and displacement fields in the proximity of the notch tip, which are worthy of investigation. The paper aims to discuss these issues.

Design/methodology/approach

Starting from Sih and Tang’s model, in the present contribution the authors propose some analytical expressions for the calculation of the strain energy density (SED) averaged over a control volume embracing the V-notch tip. The expressions vary as a function of the different boundary conditions. Dealing with the specific crack case, the results from the analytical frame are compared with those determined numerically under linear-elastic hypotheses, by applying different constraints to the through-the-thickness crack edges in three-dimensional discs subjected to Mode III loading. Free-free and free-clamped cases are considered.

Findings

Due to three-dimensional effects, the application of a nominal Mode III loading condition automatically provokes coupled Modes (I and II). Not only the intensity of the induced modes but also their degree of singularity depend on the applied conditions on the crack flanks. The variability of local SED through the thickness of the disc is analysed by numerical analyses and compared with the theoretical trend.

Originality/value

The capability of the SED to capture the combined three-dimensional effects is discussed in detail showing that this parameter is particularly useful when the definition of the stress intensity factors (SIFs) is ambiguous or the direct comparison between SIFs with odd dimensionalities is not possible.

Abstract

Purpose

In this paper, the authors derive time-varying relative export competitiveness (REC) of the Cambodian rice sector from 1995 to 2018 and examine the key determinants of the REC.

Design/methodology/approach

Three different REC indexes are calculated in this paper. The authors also developed the relative symmetric export competitiveness (RSEC) index for calculation of comparative advantage. The short-run regression (SRR) model was applied for capturing the determinants of the REC.

Findings

The study results reveal that Cambodia's rice exports became relatively competitive over time. The key findings suggest the Cambodian REC was strengthened as a result of a successful implementation of rice policy and rectangular strategy. The benefits gained from EBA and BRI were found to be the factors contributed to the REC. The higher per capita income had a positive effect on the REC, while higher domestic prices reduced the REC in some phases of the sectoral development.

Research limitations/implications

Further research is needed in two directions. First, the future studies might focus on other agro-products of Cambodia. Second, the development of the crop-specific factor endowment (CFE) model to consider the effect of endowment factors on the REC could be preferred in light of the data availability.

Originality/value

The research enriches the literature on the agricultural trade and provides a basis for further studies. This work makes a few contributions. First, it is the first study on the REC analysis for the Cambodian rice sector. Second, the latest 24-year data sets were covered. Third, a wide range of comparisons of REC among the world's top rice exporters was provided following implications of the various economic policies and foreign policy strategies, such as RS, EBA and BRI.
