Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate the criteria to measure and manage a software project’s quality indicator elements needed to implement system integration in the Industry 4.0 era.

Design/methodology/approach

The standard software process model SPICE: a crucial part of the system integration software development process, is analyzed to explore how the factors of the SPICE model rate qualitatively on the quality scorecard (QSC). QSC is a qualitative performance measurement model based on the cost of quality (COQ) perspective. The SPICE model’s effectiveness is examined in terms of system integration (SI) quality, and factors for improving this quality are determined.

Findings

The authors proposed future directions for improving SI management. The seven SPICE process groups were analyzed comparatively by matching them to the QSC. The SPICE model was found to achieve 63% with the required factors in QSC. Also, the uncommitted items indicated need to be considered for additional management in SI quality.

Practical implications

Since SPICE is revised every five years, it is suggested from this study that diagnosing the assessment items from the COQ perspective using QSC is one strategy to quickly enhance the quality of SI management in this rapidly changing technology revolution.

Originality/value

This research is the first study of its kind, proposing a methodology for adapting quickly to the Fourth Industrial Revolution’s changes and showing how the standards have changed the SPICE model over time.

Abstract

Purpose

The present study aimed to assess performance of Industry 4.0 (I4.0) in case organization by considering potential performance measures and analysis using scoring approach.

Design/methodology/approach

50 performance measures grouped into five dimensions namely manufacturing management, manufacturing economics, manufacturing strategy, manufacturing technology and workforce were considered for the analysis. The study had been done with relevance to automotive component manufacturing organization. Further, questionnaire for each performance measure was developed to gather expert inputs regarding different performance aspects of I4.0 in case organization. Reliability of the expert responses towards questionnaire was assessed by computing Cronbach's alpha (a) using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) software.

Findings

Findings of the study revealed overall I4.0 performance index (OIPI) of 0.71, i.e. 71% signifying improvement scope of 29% pertaining to I4.0 adoption. Gap analysis was performed across dimensions and performance measures to realize the weaker areas. Gap analysis revealed workforce dimension with highest gap and manufacturing management with lowest gap. The gaps that obstruct performance of I4.0 are being recognized and proposals for improvement were provided to the industrial practitioners. Based on further analysis, dimensions and performance measures found to be weaker.

Practical implications

The study helped industrial practitioners and managers to create the foundation for evaluating performance of I4.0-focused organization. Industry practitioners can employ the study to understand different performance measures with respect to different dimensions and realize the significance of I4.0 adoption.

Originality/value

The identification of performance dimensions and measures for I4.0 performance measurement and assessment using scoring approach is the original contribution of the authors.

Abstract

The present study discusses the benefits and importance of sociotechnical thinking for the integration of industry 4.0 (I4.0), and their subsequent usefulness in analyzing the value-added activities and related quality issues, and their implications in the quality 4.0 (Q4.0), product-service systems (PSS) in the organization level/complex systems in the era of I4.0. I4.0 pushed the traditional manufacturing models toward product-service systems; for this transition, social and economic factors influence more, and technological advancements are going more rapidly than the social developments needed for the transition. The integration of social-technical system perspective with I4.0 technologies adoption would improve the value cocreation of PSS. The balance among the sociotechnical systems theory (STST) and I4.0 technologies are necessary for production and logistics organizations. This can be attained by sociotechnical systems thinking because it gives a comprehensive overview for integrating I4.0 and related quality issues in the production and logistics service systems.

Abstract

Purpose

Industry 4.0 has received significant attention in today's competitive business market, necessitating a restructuring of functional domains in nearly every manufacturing organization. A comprehensive strategy to improve performance in preparation for Industry 4.0 implementation necessitates several steps, one of which is the establishment of performance outcomes (POs). The aim of this paper is to identify and rank the POs realized due to the adoption of Industry 4.0 enablers.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on an extensive literature review and inputs received from experts, a comprehensive list of enablers and the POs was prepared and finalized. This paper proposes a framework based on hybrid solution methodology, namely Neutrosophic Analytical Hierarchy Process (N-AHP) and Neutrosophic Combined Compromise Solution (N-CoCoSo), to rank the POs realized due to the adoption of Industry 4.0 enablers. The N-AHP methodology has been adopted to calculate the relative weights of the Industry 4.0 enablers. In comparison, the N-CoCoSo method has been adopted to rank the POs of Industry 4.0.

Findings

The proposed framework is applied to an Indian manufacturing organization to test the organization's practical applicability. Additionally, sensitivity analysis is also carried out to check the steadiness of the proposed framework. The findings of this study revealed that “Improved responsiveness to market conditions in today's competitive business environment” is the top-ranked PO of Industry 4.0, followed by “Enhanced competitiveness and better market share”, “Better product quality, through smart management of production process” and “Reduction in manufacturing waste and environmental sustainability” which could be realized due to adoption of its enablers.

Practical implications

This research would aid practitioners by enhancing the practitioners' capacity to understand and prioritize the various POs resulting from implementing Industry 4.0 enablers. Embracing a clear strategic plan will further assist practitioners in improving the efficiency of Industry 4.0 implementation.

Originality/value

Previous literature has only addressed the relationship between Industry 4.0 enablers and POs in a limited way. This paper attempts to compile a comprehensive list of Industry 4.0 enablers relevant to manufacturing organizations in order to fill this knowledge and research gap.

Abstract

Purpose

In this era of Industry 4.0, characterized by disruptive technologies, there is a need to identify and understand the role of the quality function in the excellence journey. Quality 4.0 refers to the digitalization of quality work in the context of Industry 4.0. As Quality 4.0 is a new concept, empirical research on the subject is extremely scant. Therefore, this study aims to identify and understand the criticality of the dimensions of Quality 4.0.

Design/methodology/approach

The present research identifies 12 axes (dimensions) of Quality 4.0 based on literature review and inputs from experts. The identified axes have been prioritized using the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) technique.

Findings

The study concludes that the 12 dimensions contribute to outcome indicators such as organizational performance, agility and sustainability. It further adds that though technology is vital for Quality 4.0, elements of traditional quality such as leadership, quality culture, customer focus, quality systems, compliance, competence, analytical thinking, data-driven decision making, etc. are mandatory for the transformation journey. In today's context except for a few matured organizations, others are even struggling to implement the traditional aspects of quality.

Research limitations/implications

Cues to further research are provided which would help in the better understanding of Quality 4.0 and its role in the Industry 4.0 scenario.

Practical implications

This research would help the practitioners understand the determinants of Quality 4.0 system and their effects on organizational performance, agility and sustainability.

Originality/value

The present research work strives to throw light on the criticality of the dimensions of Quality 4.0, thereby contributing to theory building, especially given the paucity of literature in Quality 4.0.

Abstract

Based on the research so far on quality improvement and performance measurement on hospitals and the health‐care sector, there appears to be a need to combine the various models or approaches to performance and quality improvement. This paper presents a knowledge‐based framework for evaluating the performance of a hospital using a model based on the Singapore Quality Award (SQA) criteria and the balanced scorecard (BSC) approach. A specific case study of a public sector hospital in Singapore is provided to illustrate how the SQA and the BSC can be integrated to help a public sector hospital implement and manage performance‐based programs. Overall, while limitations and implementation challenges exist, the preliminary results suggest that hospitals can also use this approach to their advantage, yielding sustainable improvement in patient satisfaction and better inter‐departmental communication. Through this framework, hospitals can make better quality decisions based on structured measurement and knowledge.

Abstract

Purpose

The Fourth Industrial Revolution ( 4th IR) affects the mode of company management. This paper aims to present a revised social responsibility (SR) model as an evaluation tool for corporate social responsibility (CSR) performance for sustainable organizational growth in the era of the 4th IR.

Design/methodology/approach

To develop an SR model that can be used well in the era of the 4th IR, the key references are “ISO 26000: Guidance on Social Responsibility” and the “Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) Guidelines.” For International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 26000 and the GRI guidelines, see the homepages in the References section. On the basis of these guidelines, a new SR model for sustainable development in the 4th IR is developed in this paper.

Findings

For a new SR model in the 4th IR, the concepts of management quality (MQ), quality responsibility (QR), creating shared value (CSV), social value and open data and open quality management are incorporated into the existing ISO 26000 evaluation criteria.

Originality/value

The 4th IR is changing the concepts of both quality management (QM) and SR. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, the new concept of SR has yet to be discussed extensively. In this paper, a new SR model is suggested to reflect the characteristics of the 4th IR.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to address the primary research question, which is what is the relationship between the project manager’s (PM) possession of the Project Management Professional (PMP) certification and the level of the safety culture present in the construction project the PM manages.

Design/methodology/approach

The research was based on a survey of a purposive sample, 109 engineers and first-line supervisors worked in 23 construction projects of which ten were led by PMP-certified PMs and 13 were led by PMs lacking PMP certification. Each PM completed a demographic questionnaire for the predictor variables of PMP certification controlled for age and experience. To assess the criterion variable of safety culture total score, engineers and first-line supervisors working in the same project completed the questionnaire of safety culture values and practices.

Findings

Results of this study indicated the level of safety culture was significantly different, and improved, for engineers and first-line supervisors who work under PMs with PMP certification compared to the level of safety culture in projects managed by PMs with no PMP certification. Although alignment of safety culture perceptions among different levels in the organization helps to achieve a positive safety culture, the role of the PM in transferring, implementing and maintaining the safety culture in the construction project is fundamental, particularly in small-to-medium sized enterprises (SMEs).

Originality/value

This study addressed the role of the PMs managerial skills in the safety performance of Saudi Arabian SMEs. The principal finding was that PMs with managerial skills perform better regarding safety performance in SME construction projects than PMs lacking managerial skills. The primary recommendation is that leaders in construction projects must carefully evaluate engineers’ managerial skills before hiring the individuals as PMs. A PM’s promotion model developed in this study provides a suitable framework and business process component for construction leaders seeking to maintain safety performance successfully.
