Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to empirically examine the mediating role of decentralization in the relationship between a firm’s strategy and its performance in the context of an advanced economy where the chief corporate strategy is differentiation.
Design/methodology/approach
The study uses data collected by an online survey targeting a stratified sample of 1,238 private firms operating in Denmark. The empirical analysis was carried out by estimating a structural equation model.
Findings
The key finding was that a decentralized organization (DO) can act as a mediator between a firm’s differentiation strategy and its performance. A multi-group analysis revealed that the mediating impact of decentralizing was affected by contingency factors such as firm size, strategic clarity, degrees of business environment risk and industry competition. Thus, a DO can be said to play a more important role in larger firms, in firms with less strategic clarity, and in companies with multiple plants.
Research limitations/implications
Although the study offers empirical evidence from a relatively large and representative sample of firms, the specificity of the context should be noted. In particular, firms in Denmark, while facing strong competition, do not compete with low costs. Clearly, studies of the mediating role of decentralization in low-cost strategy environments would be an important next step.
Practical implications
Several implications of the findings for organizational design and creation of beneficial conditions for strategy implementations are discussed.
Originality/value
The novel contribution of the study lies in the focus on decentralization as a mediator in the strategy–performance relationship. While previous research has shown that strategy is related to decentralization, and that decentralization is associated with higher performance, an empirical analysis of the relationship between the factors in the strategy-decentralization-performance path had not previously been undertaken.

The purpose of this paper is to reveal the mediating role of leadership style on the relationship between strategy and company performance.
Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to reveal the mediating role of leadership style on the relationship between strategy and company performance.
Design/methodology/approach
The study uses empirical data gathered from top managers in a stratified sample of 476 Danish private businesses.
Findings
The results show the mediating effects of leadership styles on strategic performance. In particular, both supportive and directive leadership styles partially mediate the effect of the differentiation strategy, while the supportive leadership style displays a stronger mediating effect than the directive one. The multi-group analysis shows the moderating impact of the manager’s tenure, managerial level, strategy clarity, industry and business environment risk.
Research limitations/implications
The study is limited by its nature and the specificity of the national context in which it was conducted. In this vein, the evidence collected here can be enlarged and complemented by having access to panel data or the generalization of some results to neighboring or other developed countries.
Practical implications
Several implications of the findings for managerial practices are discussed.
Originality/value
There are very few discussions of the mediating effect of leadership style between strategy and performance. The paper fills the gap by examining the role of leadership style planning on the relationship between those two variables in Denmark.

Abstract
Purpose
The demand for the cold chain logistics of agricultural products was investigated through demand forecasting; targeted suggestions and countermeasures are provided. This paper aims to discuss the aforementioned statement.
Design/methodology/approach
A Markov-optimised mean GM (1, 1) model is proposed to forecast the demand for the cold chain logistics of agricultural products. The mean GM (1, 1) model was used to forecast the demand trend, and the Markov chain model was used for optimisation. Considering Guangxi province as an example, the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method were verified, and relevant suggestions are made.
Findings
Compared with other models, the Markov-optimised mean GM (1, 1) model can more effectively forecast the demand for the cold chain logistics of agricultural products, is closer to the actual value and has better accuracy and minor error. It shows that the demand forecast can provide specific suggestions and theoretical support for the development of cold chain logistics.
Originality/value
This study evaluated the development trend of the cold chain logistics of agricultural products based on the research horizon of demand forecasting for cold chain logistics. A Markov-optimised mean GM (1, 1) model is proposed to overcome the problem of poor prediction for series with considerable fluctuation in the modelling process, and improve the prediction accuracy. It finds a breakthrough to promote the development of cold chain logistics through empirical analysis, and give relevant suggestions based on the obtained results.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to develop a preliminary model of instructional leadership in the Chinese educational context and explore the ways in which Chinese school principals locate their instructional-leadership practices in response to traditional expectations and the requirements of recent reforms.
Design/methodology/approach
In-depth interviews were conducted with 22 selected primary school principals in Shenzhen and Guangzhou. A qualitative analysis was conducted to categorize the major leadership practices enacted by these principals.
Findings
An initial model of instructional leadership in China with six major dimensions is constructed. The paper also illustrates and elaborates on three dimensions with the greatest context-specific meanings for Chinese principals.
Originality/value
The paper explores the ways in which Chinese principals enact their instructional leadership in a context in which “the west wind meets the east wind”; that is, when they are required to accommodate both imported reform initiatives and traditional expectations. The paper contributes to the sparse existing research on principals’ instructional leadership in non-western cultural and social contexts.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to obtain a design scheme of the surface texture on mechanical seal with lower friction and leakage by comparing two common texture types: dimples and grooves.
Design/methodology/approach
An optimal free-form shape and an optimal circular shape were chosen by multi-objective optimization, and two types of grooves with different directions were chosen by a series of experiments. Then, the optimal free-form dimple, the optimal circular dimple, the groove perpendicular to the direction of movement (hereafter called groove-1) and the groove angled at 60° to the direction of movement (hereafter called groove-2) were compared by experiments under different loads.
Findings
The optimal free-form dimple shows a better performance in terms of a lower coefficient of friction (COF) and a lower leakage than the other shapes, especially for the high speed and low load conditions. The reduction rate of COF is up to 37.5%, and the leakage rate is reduced by about 12.5%. The dimples have a lower leakage than the grooves. The groove angled at 60° to the direction of movement is easier to pump the oil into the interface of the sealing face, leading to a lower friction but a higher leakage.
Originality/value
This study provides a feasible surface texture design scheme for improving the combination performance of mechanical seals.

The paper attempts to discuss the impact of reference price effect on pricing decisions.
Abstract
Purpose
The paper attempts to discuss the impact of reference price effect on pricing decisions.
Design/methodology/approach
With the growth of the Internet and e-commerce, more and more customers purchase products in through online channels and choose products by comparing different prices and services, and the reference price effect has an impact on pricing decisions. To investigate the impact of consumers' reference price effect on the dual-channel supply chain, the authors establish a basic model consisting of a single dominant manufacturer and a single downstream retailer, and analyze the optional decisions under different situations and discuss the influence of reference price effect. Finally, a number case verifies the validity and rationality of the proposed model.
Findings
The results show that (1) the reference price effect has varying effects on the price, channel demand and income of manufacturers and retailers in the channel depending on the role of customers' channel preferences. (2) The manufacturer's online channel demand and profits always increase with the reference pricing effect, whereas the retailer's offline demand and profits always decline. (3) When the proportion of consumers preferring offline is higher, the manufacturer's network price and wholesale price increase with the reference price effect, while the retailer's retail price decreases with the reference price effect; when the proportion of consumers preferring offline is lower, the opposite is true, and the centralized decision results are consistent with the decentralized decision results.
Practical implications
This paper can clarify the impact of consumer reference price effects on the operation of dual-channel supply chains, and help inform pricing decisions of manufacturers and retailers in dual-channel supply chains.
Originality/value
The proposed approach can well analyze the impact of consumer reference price effect and give channel their optional decisions.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to analyze general development trend of China’s population and to forecast China’s total population under the change of China’s family planning policy so as to measure shock disturbance effects on China’s population development.
Design/methodology/approach
China has been the most populous country for hundreds of years. And this state will be sustained in the forthcoming decade. Obviously, China is confronted with greater pressure on controlling total scale of population than any other country. Meanwhile, controlling population will be beneficial for not only China but also the whole world. This paper first analyzes general development trend of China’s population total amount, sex ratio and aging ratio. The mechanism for measurement of the impact effect of a policy shock disturbance is proposed. Linear regression model, exponential curve model and grey Verhulst model are adopted to test accuracy of simulation of China’s total population. Then considering the policy shock disturbance on population, discrete grey model, DGM (1, 1), and grey Verhulst model were adopted to measure how China’s one-child policy affected its total population between 1978 and 2015. And similarly, the grey Verhulst model and scenario analysis of economic developing level were further used to forecast the effect of adjustment from China’s one-child policy to two-child policy.
Findings
Results show that China has made an outstanding contribution toward controlling population; it was estimated that China prevented nearly 470 million births since the late 1970s to 2015. However, according to the forecast, with the adjustment of the one-child policy, the birth rate will be a little higher, China’s total population was estimated to reach 1,485.59 million in 2025. Although the scale of population will keep increasing, but it is tolerable for China and sex ratio and trend of aging will be relieved obviously.
Practical implications
The approach constructed in the paper can be used to measure the effect of population change under the policy shock disturbance. It can be used for other policy effect measurement problems under shock events’ disturbance.
Originality/value
The paper succeeded in studying the mechanism for the measurement of the post-impact effect of a policy and the effect of changes in China’s population following the revision of the one-child policy. The mechanism is useful for solving system forecasting problems and can contribute toward improving the grey decision-making models.

Abstract
Purpose
The consensus opinion helps with the achievement of fairness of the decision process, especially when the new decision makers (DMs) are added into the group decision making (GDM). This paper aims to show by constructing consensus models that when some conditions are met, the consensus level does not decrease even when new DMs are invited to join the GDM (new opinions are added to the GDM).
Design/methodology/approach
This paper first constructs a deviation which is the difference between each two individual opinions. The smaller these differences are, the higher consensus degree (level) of the group. Then, a consensus optimization model based on individual differences (IDCO) is constructed by minimizing the aggregated deviations. Lastly, based on the optimization model, the condition of reaching a high level of consensus when new DMs are added into the GDM is discussed.
Findings
The discussion on the properties of the IDCO indicates that once the consensus with all DMs reaching an acceptable level, the consensus deviation degree decreases as the number of DMs increases when certain conditions are met, and the consensus level does not decrease even when new DMs join the GDM.
Originality/value
Practically, high-level consensus needs to be reached no matter how difficult it is when the new opinions are added into the GDM. To see how this end could be achieved, this paper takes the fuzzy preference relations as particular instances to investigate the conditions of consensus under which new DMs (opinions) are added into the GDM. The rather holistic analysis leads us to such a conclusion that the authors can replace this particular kind of preference, as used in the discussion, in many other cases by, for instance, multiplicative preference relation, linguistic preference relation, etc.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to study the issue of the three-dimensional formation coordinated control for the unmanned autonomous helicopter (UAH) by using the sliding mode disturbance observer. Under the designed formation coordinated controller, the desired formation can be maintained and the closed-loop system stability is analyzed by using the Lyapunov theory.
Design/methodology/approach
Considering the unknown time-varying external 10; disturbance in formation flight of UAHs, a sliding mode disturbance observer has been employed to estimate them.
Findings
This work is supported in part by the National Natural Science Foundation of China under Grant 61803207, and in part by the Fundamental Research Funds for the Central Universities under Grant LGZD201806.
Originality/value
A sliding mode disturbance observer has been designed to estimate the unknown time-varying external disturbance in formation flight of UAHs. Aiming at the leading UAH maneuver in three-dimensional space during the formation flight progress, the formation coordinated controller has been proposed based on the output of the disturbance observer to maintain the formation.
